LOWE HF-250

I have been testing this receiver for two weeks. My view is that HF-250 is
better than HF-225 but it is not on the same level as Icom R71E or JRC-NRD
525/535.

Audio quality is good and there is a good selection of if-filters. The PLAM
works well but unfortunately there is no notch or PBT. On the other hand,
HF-250 is clearly cheaper than Icom/NRD.

Frequency accuracy is 0,1 kHz i.e. the same as for R71.

Trans-atlantic frequencies at my QTH are nicely open with HF-250; the best
catch has been Radio Color, Valparaiso, on 1410 kHz. HF-250 is very
sensitive, at least the same level as my R71.

There are 255 memories which can easily be used with the remote control.
HF-250 is the first receiver I have ever tested that is absolutely easiest to
use by remote control! Listening to HF-250 is a little bit like watching TV
;-)

There was a disappointment to me especially on AM/medium-waves. The dynamic
range of HF-250 seems to be somewhat limited and thus there are spurious
signals; eg. Norway 1314 was heard on 774 kHz when trying to hear Japanese stn
at 2023 UTC. On 972 kHz there were some shortwave stations when I tried to
hear HLCA; perhaps this spurious signal was caused by YLE Pori 963 kHz (600
kW, some 100 km from my QTH). There are no spurious signals on MW when I
listen with my Icom R71E. They disappeared from HF-250 when I used the Yeasu
FRT-7700 antenna tuner. I wonder how HF-250 works eg. in the United States or
the UK where you have practically everywhere strong local AM-stations very
close to your QTH & antenna?

As a summary I'd like to say that Lowe HF-250 is better than HF-225 and
several other receivers around that price-group (Yaesu FRG-100, Icom R72).
However, it is not on the same level as Icom R71 or JRC/NRD. If somebody
needs a good and relatively low-cost receiver HF-250 is a good choice.

Three comments on items in DX News V62#30...John Dunn's 960 is WAVR. They use
the "Choice 102" slogan. John's "Country 1570" is WFLR. And WNWR in Bala
Cynwyd no longer mentions that city in its IDs, instead using the incorrect
"WNWR, Philadelphia" as its ID.
