Following local stations are off the air, due to Hurricane Opal.

1340 WFSH Niceville
1400 WFAV Ft Walton Beach
1460 WZEP Defuniak Springs.

That last had scheduled to test tonight. I believe it'll be a no show. Some
areas here are a real mess. This is list is not all inclusive, as I think a
couple of other area stations are off, but haven't done a full survey yet.

One DX catch for the next NewsFlash, and some DX Test info...

Sunday, Oct. 1, roughly 1730 CDT, while driving around Ashland City, Tenn.,
someone's soul oldies were trying to override local WLAC-1510. After a few
seconds, they succeeded -- and began signing off. WWHN-1510 Joliet, Illinois,
with a partial-data signoff and an excellent signal. Probably possible only
because WLAC goes to night pattern (which favors the south) early in the
beginning of the month..

This from HCJB's Frequency Manager, Richard McVicar ----

Greetings from up in the Andes:

As mentioned on DX Partyline last weekend, we are excited to announce that
we'll be airing MONTHLY DX tests on 690 kHz for the next year. Each test will
be 15 minutes in length and will include plenty of Morse code and other unique
items. All tests have to be aired sometime between 0504 UTC and 0820 UTC,
when there is no regular programming going out on 690 kHz.

I've tried to time the tests so that each one corresponds with a sunrise or
sunset either in Europe, the South Pacific, Japan or eastern Canada. In most
cases, I just let the terminator take its natural seasonal course and left the
time alone. Except for this weekend's test, the other ones will all take
place UTC Sunday in order to give DXers a chance to set up a longwire on
Saturday.

Correct reports for these tests are verified with a special 690 kHz QSL card.
In order that your QSL will be truly valuable, I'm being really fussy and
unreasonable about details. If you hear code, you need to report exactly when
you heard it and what characters you heard. Tape recordings are welcome but
tapes can not be returned.

Please send reports (with one IRC or first class postage in U.S. or Canadian
stamps) to:

690 DX Test
c/o English Language Service
HCJB
Casilla 17-17-691
Quito
Ecuador

Here is the schedule. We'll do our best to stick to it but there may be a
change now and then. Any changes will be announced on DX Partyline and The
Latest Catch.

All times and dates are in UTC.

Regret to say I've been a little busy this week to DX, something about a storm
coming through. You may have heard of it. Here's the current status of local
radio, as best I can tell, as of 9:15 a.m., CDT, October 8, 1995.

WFSH 1340 Niceville, was off from sometime Wed, Oct 4, until midday, Oct 7.
Now on and operating with normal programming.

WFAV 1400 Ft Walton Beach went off Wed, Oct 4, and has not yet returned. This
may be power related or there may be damage. I have not been to FWB yet, and
am loathe to bother anybody still trying to recover with questions about how
it's going. (I know firsthand the aggravation of well-meaning friends calling
in the middle of cleanup, interrupting the ongoing work yet again.)

WFTW 1260 Ft Walton Beach was still on as we cleared the signal area Wed
(10/4), and we found them on upon return Friday. If they ever went off, I
have no evidence. This station is part of the emergency broadcast system
locally, and has generators. It is possible they rode it out without problem.

WZEP 1460 Defuniak Springs was off 10/6 and the morning of 10/7. I don't
think the scheduled test took place, but frankly didn't try.

All other Okaloosa and Walton county stations were off only briefly, if at
all. None of the silents (e.g. WCNU 1010, WBZR 1120) remained silent.

DX tests:

WOBL 1320 Oberlin OH. Did not try. Was still looking for a motel room at
that point. (Finally got a room in Ocala, a long way away from here.)

KLZ 560 Denver. Nothing heard. Gave it maximum effort, but this one got
 away.

Lost the outdoor antenna in the hurricane, but overall damage here was
minimal. I see the bright side, in that I have at least a cord of oak for the
fireplace on hand that was in the tree until Wednesday afternoon, and just a
few shingles will need replacing. The lights are back on, the water is
running, and most important, all our friends and neighbors here are safe and
their homes are habitable. I'll have a new antenna up late this afternoon,
and be back on the dials tonight. Time to get the gloves on and go to work
around the neighborhood, there are still a lot of trees to clear and trash to
collect.

COMMENTS: What a difference a year can make in a wet climate! The brush and
undergrowth have increased phenomenally at this coastal location. Even my
stomach-crawling guerilla tactics were no match for the impenetrable wall of
antenna-defying greenery. The only direction that I could run a short
Beverage was south-southwest, aimed to the east of New Zealand. The much
shorter randomwires had little directionality at MW and tropical band
frequencies, but at least they were pointed in my favorite DX directions.

Trans-Pacific mediumwave conditions on 10/7 favored a trans-equatorial path,
but the following evening was almost totally Japan. From 1330-1430 UTC, the
band was utterly filled with Japanese talk and music on split-frequencies.
There was no way I could DX them all! The high point of tropical band DX was
Kenya and other East Africans on the AM longpath, more than one hour past
local sunrise.
