                WELCOME TO THE AM-DX NEWSFLASH - October 19 1995
              ****************************************************

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

First, a postcard received today from Larry Godwin (dated 10/4 - and the
USPS wants ANOTHER raise?!). He advises (source not given and he hasn't heard
the station) that WJDM-1660 (Elizabeth, NJ) is testing during the evenings,
but doesn't believe they're active after midnight. Running 10kw, and
scheduled to go full time on 10/28... uhhh, guess the FCC action kinda puts a
halt to that -- wonder if anyone has logged it?

From a 10 OCT posting to Rec.Radio.Shortwave by Rick Seifert at the Voice
of America:

"William Pfeiffer of rec.radio.broadcasting reports that he heard
programming on 1640 kHz last night. He is located in Missouri, USA.
Signal reported as good at his location. He didn't listen long enough to
     catch an ID...."

Gentlemen,

Sorry for the delay in getting this out to you.

1400 WFAV Ft Walton Beach heard on the air on October 10, after being off as a
result of hurricane Opal. Format, schedule unchanged.

Clarification to my last report to you: I meant to say that none of the area's
silent stations returned in the aftermath of Opal. It didn't come out that way.
Where I wrote "None of the other silents... remained silent" I'd intended that
none of the silents came on for emergency broadcasting. They're as quiet as
they've ever been.

 INDIVIDUAL LOGGINGS

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

I guess the WWHN logging spurred me to action -- took Monday off & put the
longwire back up. It's 350-400' of #14 stranded insulated wire, the amount
left from a 500' roll after putting up a 80m Zepp ham antenna. The antenna
lies right on the ground, in the wet field to the north of the house. The
radio is a Kenwood TS-680 ham rig. Promptly caught several new ones:

Oct. 9 DX
2200 ELT legal IDs in quick succession from WQEW-1560, KXEL-1540, and
KSTP-1500. Latter two are all time new to my Tennessee logs; WQEW
was heard at my previous QTH in Nashville.

2204 KWBG-1590 Boone, IA w/local promo, Boone furniture ad, and slogan
             "AM 1590 KWBG".
2206 WTHI-1480 Terre Haute, IN w/"WTHI Newstalk 1480 Forecast"
2210 unID-1210 briefly over WGMP with a mix of mor and country
2227 WXSS-1030 Memphis w/B:gospel and calls. I'm deep in WQSE's null
and don't hear a peep out of them at night - really, they aren't
all that strong during the day either.
2232 CFRB-1010 Toronto w/calls & local news

A productive night. Especially since two hours later, UHF-TV opened to New
Orleans!

A bit more DX here:

10/16 DX
0000 KIOA-940* Des Moines, IA w/call ID
0002 WEJM-950* Chicago w/urban music & call ID
0005 unID-980 w/Sports Fan
0015 KLOH-1050* Pipestone, MN w/calls & country. Nice for 238 watts!
0020 KNX-1070 Los Angeles excellent!
0135 WRES-1080* Louisville // "107-7 WHKW"
0200 KGBS-1190* Dallas w/local promo

Locally, WYOR-560 seems to have switched to black-oriented talk, religion, or
a combination of the two.

I heard a couple of off-frequency latins from over here in New Zealand earlier
tonight:

1159.6kHz

1498.2kHz

Colombians were coming in stronger than normal, but I couldn't get an ID on
either station as I had to dash out somewhere.

Has anyone heard these from the USA? Who are they???

Cheers,

Andy Gardner
