On a tip from Bill Dvorak I hear that some big changes have taken place on the
Rockford AM dial. WNTA 1150 (talk) is now silent, and WRRR 1330 (satellite
standards) is now WNTA, carrying both standards and talk. I confirmed this
while passing through Rockford on October 20.

I've listened to 1660 at various times of day/night with no sign of WJDM
Elizabeth NJ testing. Elizabeth is about 30 miles N of here; some checks have
been within a mile of the tower site. Am sure of frequency - Sony boombox
goes to 1670 digital! Will be interesting to see if they put 10kw day into
their roughly 100 foot high tower in a swamp in Union NJ. Also have noted
with mock disgust how many journalists reported "Elizabeth is largest city in
country with no nighttime service;" the correct statement should be "Elizabeth
is the largest city in the country with a licensed station that is not on at
night," as Jersey City is THE answer to that popular convention question...
they have no licensed stations at ALL and about 2x the population of
Elizabeth. Most recent published interview with WJDM's Quinn indicates the
1660 format is "a surprise;" current 1530 format is brokered ethnic, and
oldies when no one paid to be on...
(Another bit of trivia tells you that WSKQ-620 has applied to change city of
license to Jersey City, WNWK-105.9 wants to change there, and WYNY has studios
in Jersey City)
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-
The October 4th edition of Radio World has an article about the FCC's
rescinding of the expanded band allotments, and also mentions that WJDM will
go ahead with their planned October startup on 1660, thanks to a Special
Temporary Authority granted by the FCC.

OPEN MIKE
The probability of someone watching you is proportional to the stupidity of
your action. By now you know the FCC made some calculation errors in the
expanded band. Even though applications are on hold now, WJDM Elizabeth, NJ
will move to 1660. WJDM is free to proceed on the basis of legislation passed
during the Bush administration. WJDM's President, John R. Quinn, was quoted
in a recent Broadcast & Cable "Most of the equipment is installed and we're
doing tests." So, looks like all of us will have the chance to log NJ on 1660
soon! 73, John.

WJNX due to numerous pre-emptions for lousy baseball (i.e., the
Marlins, sorry fans) (Dale's words not mine-ed) Tom has
complained about stations that keep preempting him--add 1520 WWKB

UNIDENTIFIED/TENT
1660 ?WJDM NJ Elizabeth 10/17 2113-2200 May have been testing on 1660 at
this time. Heard about all the hits from the Eagles... Lots
of audio drops, carrier drops... Signal was extremely good, much
better than the KUSA reception last season. Measured on my
Patomic FIM-41 at over 100 mico-volts. Did not hear ANY ID's or
voice at all, just the music. At 2200 Carrier went off.
Listened until 2300 but nothing. (LF-FL)
