in Arabic. Heard many times this week, but never an ID. Senegal
heard lower than Angola, which was heard best on 1367.4
+ 13 OCT, 2037 - AA female chant. <R> + 14 OCT, 2253 - Timely ascent
to good peak over Angola with definite ID by woman as "Radiodiffusion
du Senegal". Apparent phone-in music selections with man announcer
hosting, mixing o/u music from the Angolan.
1367 ANGOLA, R. Nacional, Mulenvas (Luanda) (100 kW per comments by
Vashek Korinek, South Africa, from Comments on African Stations (as
listed in 1995 WRTH)) - 12 OCT, 2137 - Pop music pgm hosted by woman
and man in PP, different male voice at 2138:30 w/ "Radio Nacional"
ID. Over presumed Senegal w/ man talking in AA-like language,
SIO 433-2 <R> + 13 OCT, 2054 - Primitive native vocals / drum
accompaniment at very strong level; didn't detect co-channel Senegal
during short stay on the frequency. <R> + 14 OCT, 2244 - Highlife
music with very good signal but Senegal apparently under and later
peaking unexpectedly on top.
1368 ISLE OF MAN, Manx Radio, Douglas (20 kW) - 12 OCT, 2045 -
Fair, Manx Radio ID, ad for commercial radio. + 13 OCT, 0630 -
News report mentions Douglas.

with repetitious slogan by man in RR, then rock music. Already
very good at this time, as was Luxembourg overriding Saudi
Arabia on 1440.

Interval signal of flutes and drums, man with opening
announcements, then anthem, // 4935. Man speaking in Russian
at same time. + 15 OCT, 0158-0210 - "K.B.C.", then drum IS,
choral anthem at 0200, "Good morning" and frequency announcement
at 0201:30, religious song, EE talk, // 4935. SIO 322. + 15 OCT,
0157 - Strong open carrier at 0155 tune-in; man suddenly on with
"This is KBC" at 0157. IS of drums / flutes to 0200 with 3+1 pips,
choral anthem and full opening by man with frequencies, then pgm
of pop selections. Fair-good signal, way over presumed Kaliningrad
and // 4935 which was strong but slightly distorted. Subsequently
found much weaker // MW outlets through QRM on 1044, 1233, 747
and tentative 954. Still fair peaks on 1386 at 0312 with 0317
transmitter sunrise approaching.
1394.2 TOGO, RT, Lome (20/1 kW) - 13 OCT, 2043 - man talking in FF,
// 5047. Fair until severely QRM'ed by Albania-1395 at *2045. <R>

Information: Translated from a letter (18 February, 1993)
from NRCer Mauricio Molano, who is both an announcer and a
sound technician with the RNE in Salamanca: "The station
that you have been hearing on 1458.2 with BBC WS is Radio
Gibraltar (normally 1458.27 kHz), which I can hear in the
early mornings with local programming."

Medium Wave News says that slogan is being changed from "Mercury"
to "The New County Sound".

11 OCT, 2230 - Good, BBC World Service. + 14 OCT, 0012 - BBC
program // 5975. + 14 OCT, 0008 - World Service at nice peak level,
then into deep fade at 0013. Again same day at 2220 with news report
on situation in Mogadishu. Great level for 500 watts and clear
channel on SE (Brazil) Beverage.
1485 SPAIN, SER synchros (2 kW) - 11 OCT, 0243 - echoey SS
// 1026. + 13 OCT, 0057 - Talk in SS, fair and tending to
dominate BBC Ascension. UnID station with AA chants way below
- Syria? + 13 OCT, 2014 - stations w/ 3 different SS programs;
evenly mixing. <R>

"1548 __ Max AM" through VOA-Kuwait and R.City Gold-England.
1548 KUWAIT, VOA Kuwait City (100 kW) - 10 OCT, 0104 - News in
EE. + 12 OCT, 2305 - Good, "You're listening to the Voice of
America broadcasting from Washington", over England.
+ 13 OCT, 2338 - Briefly up over the Brits w/ VOA program
about the history of disease; the speaker said that in the
American Civil War, more soldiers died of disease or infection
than died from bullets. SIO 322. + 13 OCT, 2345 - Rising on
top of Capital City Gold with woman at VOA pgm break, then talks
concerning American theatre and farming subsidies. VOA news at

This earlier s/off time explains why they have not been heard

13 OCT, 2000 - Good, RDP news and jingles, then "deportes" (sports).
+ 14 OCT, 0813 - Pop song during short fade-up to fair peak; woman
announcer in PP at 0814. + 14 OCT, 1936 - talk in PP by man; good.
1566 BELARUS, Voice of Russia, Mayak synchros (10/7/5 kW) -
10 OCT, 2300 and 13 OCT, 0000 - with Radio Moscow interval
signal and pips. Not sure if this is the correct transmitter
site. + Station Mayak, only low powered synchros listed in
WRTH - 10 OCT, 2259 - IS, pips at 2300, ID, woman w/ news in
Russian. SIO 233 + 12/13 OCT, 2359 - Briefly fading up and
mixed with Iran which was on top during deep AIR fade with
Midnight in Moscow IS to 0000 pips.
1566 INDIA, AIR, Nagpur-Buttibori (1000 kW) - 11 OCT, 2348-0001 -
Indian film music, briefly heard woman in Hindi just before 0000,
then back to music. Mixing w/ Iran, SIO 322. A real thrill
when we first got this, and just as thrilling to hear it night
after night. Music from 2345 fade-in, 5+1 time pips at 0030
(India like Newfoundland has top of the hour at xx:30 UTC),
Hindi news 0030, EE News 0035, fading at 0040 (Indian daylight).
Heard a single long transmitter tone preceding carrier off at
0041. The program is briefly // 5010 (0035-0040). Not as distant
as Lesotho, but less water path to work with. + 12/13 OCT, 2339+ -
Initially noted with "obvious" film music under Iran, then rising
to first great peak at 2348; continuing very strong at times to
0015+, save for occasional fade-down periods, as 2359 when mixed
with Iran and lower level Belarus synchros. Pgm of mostly film
music until usual AIR 5+1 pips at 0030 and into National Channel
Hindi news, //4840 but not 5010. Then EE news at 0035, // 5010
but not 4840. 5010 does not carry the National Channel Hindi news
at 0030, but does relay the EE news at 0035. Still fair at 0035,
but faded down fast at 0038, just ahead of listed 0040* which also
corresponded to transmitter sunrise. Interesting that Boulder 'A'
index for 12 OCT was = 24 and 13 OCT 0000 'K' index = 4 due to
coronal hole effects. Signal clearly superior on Euro Beverage,
less of a skewed path than might have been expected. + 13 OCT,
0035 - Good, woman with news bulletin in EE // 5010 until 0040
+ 14 OCT, 0030-0036 - 1566 much weaker behind Iran but same
pattern of // channels for news relays on shortwave observed
and many 60/90mb AIR outlets noted at dramatically enhanced
levels during 0040-0100 bandscan with much quieter geomagnetic
field. + 14/15 OCT, 2325 - Already showing o/u Iran with film
music; to very good peaks thereafter and ID at 0035 bridging
Hindi and EE news segments read by woman and man respectively:
"This is All India Radio. The news, read by...". Gone at 0040.
+ 14 OCT, 2324 - good to EXCELLENT (!) w/ Indian film music,
pips at 2330, mention of India, then news in Hindi, then woman
with news in EE "that's the end of this news bulletin", then man
in Hindi mentioning "kilohertz", then music.
1566 IRAN, IRIB, Bandar-Abbas (100 kW) - 10 OCT, 0111 - Koranic
program. + 12 OCT, 0001 - Faded up over AIR w/ man in Farsi,
probably news. SIO 322 + 12/13 OCT, - Dominating channel at
2339 tune-in, but soon in a fight with and then mostly under
AIR. Briefly on top at 2359, mixing with AIR and Belarus and
at 0000+ with talk by man, possibly news in Farsi. + 14 OCT,
2310 - Koranic vocal.
1566 no TUNISIA, ERTT, Sfax - This 1200 kW outlet was OFF during
the time of this DXpedition.
1567 UKRAINE, unID site - 10 OCT, 0207-0231, 0257-0303 - At 0207,
woman in Slavic language, possibly Ukrainian, w/ news to 0210, then
man talks, some short music...at 0257 man and woman talk, either a
big fade or long period of silence before 5 pips at 0300 and an
anthem; woman resumed speaking at 0301. Deep fades, hets notched,
peaks to SIO 232. + 12 OCT, 0005 - Weird, wailing vocal by woman
in unID language. Fair-good on Euro Beverage through 0020 tune-
out. Was initially thought to be a Middle Eastern clandestine.
+ 13 OCT, 2356 - het against Belarus - 1566. + Information from
Thomas Adam in Germany: "Now I can confirm 1567 kHz definitely as
being Radio Ukraine. I heard them last night (11 NOV) at 0215 UTC
with well-known interval-signal and ID."
1575 SPAIN - 13 OCT, 1955 - dominant Spaniard had a program that
was different from that on a weaker SS station that was isolated
successfully by phasing. <R> + SER synchros (5 kW) - 14 OCT, 0046 -
SS // 1485, 1584.
1584 SPAIN - 13 OCT, 1953 - fast SS teletalk, atop station which
had SS vocal. A third station (possibly AA music) was way under. <R>

1593 GERMANY, Holzkirchen - 14 OCT, 2045 - Slavic talk to good peaks.
1593 EGYPT, Matruh (10 kW) - 15 OCT, 0309 - AA. Everyone said this was
Egypt before I tuned this in - I'll have to take their word for it!

oldie "Black Betty" by Ram Jam (1977). <R>
1593.35 unID - 13 OCT, 1951 - het against 1593. Ideas ? <R>
1602 SPAIN (2 stations) - 13 OCT, 1951 - strong SS talk station
NOT // 1584 was atop (Jean says it's the usually-dominant Euskadi
Vitoria station); when it was phased out, a weaker SS station that
was // 1584 was heard. <R>
1602 SPAIN, R. Vitoria, Vitoria (10 kW), 12 OCT, 1923 - Ad for
Banco de Vitoria, sports report. <R> + 12 OCT, 1955 - Presumed this
one with talk by man in SS, over another SER synchro outlet (5/2 kW)

1611 VATICAN, Vatican Radio (100 kW) - 14 OCT, 1919 - Interval
signal, // 5882. + 13 OCT, 1945 - rosary, seemed to be in Latin
(spoken Latin sounds somewhat like SS / II blend). <R>
