What do you folks think of the idea of developing a membership data base
listing such things as receivers, antennas, etc... so other members who have
a question would know who to contact? I could prepare a brief questionaire
and send it out with a future issue. Of course, participation would be on a
voluntary basis only... I could publish the data base once or twice a year,
or whatever makes sense. An example of what I think would work for my entry
follows:

Phil Bytheway - Seattle WA - bytheway@xxxxxxx
    RX: Drake R-8, ICOM R-70, R-390A, SPR-4, R-392, etc
Ant: KIWA MW loop, Sanserino 15" air-core loop, 70' longwire, etc.
Other: Mini-MWDX-6 phasing unit, reel-to-reel tape recorder
    Other bands DX: none

Another though, ideas concerning combining Individual Loggings into a
single or double column. Would require some more work on my part... but
members may prefer this format over what we're doing now? Ideas always
welcome.... phil

J.D. Stephens - JSteph6711@xxxxxxx

In reply to Al Merriman's post which appeared in the latest Newsflash:

<<I pass the following along for what it is worth. Supposedly KXBT-1190 in
Vallejo, CA is going to begin operation on 1640 kHz on MAR 12. This info is
supposed to come directly from ABC Radio - KXBT is a recent affiliate of
theirs. This is not confirmed - if I get more info will pass it along.>>

In the post on this station that I recently saw , David R. Alpert (KB2LUM)
of ABC News confirmed that this expanded band operation would happen. His
E-Mail address is dra@xxxxxxxxxxxx (home) or alpert@xxxxxxxxx (work), for
more info.

1640 KXBT CA, Vallejo 3/9 2040-2100 (ELT) Testing with rock oldies, very
clear morse code IDs on the hour. Fair signals on my lousy car rx.

Patrick Martin - rrusk@xxxxxxxxxxxx

Thanx for the tip. Larry Godwin and I have been hearing a pirate on 1639.9,
running anything from ez listening to ac. The announcer sounds at least
middle-aged, talking about current affairs. It has been heard off and on
from LSS to 0600 ELT. This catch of yours doesn't sound like the pirate.
I'll check out KXBT.

Mark McMillan - MARKN7EIJ@xxxxxxx

Lee and gang Have a loud stn on1640 playing mor mx and up to 30db over s9
and per Robert Kramer should be KXBT but no ID yet heard last night also .
10:00pm pdt.

Doug Smith - 72777.3143@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

At this hour (0230ELT Tuesday 3/12/96) KXBT is about S7 at my central
Tennessee location on 1640KHz. Programming is satellite black oldies, with
an excellent (and long!) blues number at 0200. Occasional call IDs. This
one may be tough on the East Coast, it's certainly no stronger than any of
the other California stations and about 3 S-units below WJDM.

Robert S. Ross VA3SW - radiorob@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

YES!!!... as you may have already heard... KXBT 1640, in VALLEJO, California
is on the air testing. This morning... Wed. March 13/96 at 0030-0125 EST I
heard them with a poor signal at tune in but a fair signal by 0100 EST...
with some real nice peaks. They were playing continuous Soul Oldies... one
song right after another. No breaks and no talk between songs... JUST
MUSIC. Selections by Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson... "second that
Emotion", Supremes... "Someday, we'll be together", Michael Jackson... "I'll
be there" and other soul hits of the 60's and 70's.

I called the station at 0107 EST at 707-644-8944 and spoke to the on air DJ
at KUIC FM 95.3... this is the FM affiliate of KXBT. She confirmed that
KXBT was on the air at that time playing continuous Soul Oldies. She was
quite amazed that I was hearing them in Canada!!! She confirmed that the
official on air date was March 19/96.

I was given the following address to write the station.....

                KXBT AM c/o KUIC PLAZA
                600 E. Main
                Vacaville, California
                95688

This is Station #5 from California for me on AM BCB!!! Glad to add this one
to the log books... now if we can just get a station in Washington, Oregon,
Idaho, and Montana to show up on the Expanded Am Band... before it is all
plugged up, I can complete my all Continental USA heard on AM BCB!!!! Good
luck hearing this one... it should be fairly easy anywhere in North
America!! 73... ROB.

all nite last nite; at this moment is off air past 15 min. '96 NRC log:

From Bill Shaffer (N8WPH) in Toledo, OH: "Who is the station on 1120
kHz that has been on the air on Sunday's only? For the past ten Sundays
from morning to Sunset, somebody has been on 1120 kHz playing a tape of
Oldies music. The same tape each week, there are a few seconds of silence
between songs. There are no voice announcements or station ID's at any
time. Who is this? Is Nelsonville running some kind of tests? The signal
is steady all day but fades a bit near sunset until it disappears under
KMOX. The signal in Toledo is about 10 dB over S9.

     Signed, Bill Shaffer

730 KBSU ID, Boise 3/4 0235-0300 unid appliance QRN wiped out first half
of this test. When they switched off whatever it was @ 0235 code was
heard u/ CKLG. Another full minute of code @ 0248. In between sounded
like C&W rather than the advertised march mx. Signal never got above
CKLG; very difficult to separate them on loop bearing from here.
Heavy atmospheric noise this am compounded the problem. Apparently
       off @ 0300 per sked w/ mention of ". . . AM, 730."

       [Connelly*P-MA]
774 SPAIN, RNE1 synchros, MAR 11 0052 - SS teletalk to good peaks (but
WABC slop that would be easily dumped w/ 2-wire phasing could not be
       eliminated w/ the loop). [Connelly*P-MA]
783 SYRIA, Tartus, MAR 11 0052 - AA vocal o/ others; some CFDR slop.
       [Connelly*P-MA]

       locals. [Connelly*P-MA]
 846 ITALY, Rome, MAR 10 2355 - baritone II vocal // 1035; good.
       [Connelly*P-MA]
 855 SPAIN, RNE1 synchros, MAR 11 0039 - jazz-pop vocal // 864, then man &

873 GERMANY, AFN, Frankfurt, MAR 11 0111 - US basketball game; good, atop
       channel. [Connelly*P-MA]
 882 UNITED KINGDOM / SPAIN-CANARY ISLANDS / unID, MAR 11 0037 - man &
woman w/ EE talk, o/ SS talk and third station (Yugo. or German ?)
       with Muzak. [Connelly*P-MA]
891 ALGERIA, Algiers, MAR 11 0036 - huge w/ slow AA talk by man.
       [Connelly*P-MA]
909 UNITED KINGDOM, BBC R. 5 synchros, MAR 11 0035 - EE talk mentioned "on
909", then discussion of recent newspaper articles; to good peak.
       [Connelly*P-MA]
 954 SPAIN, R. Espana, Madrid / unID, MAR 11 0059 - SS talk o/u music that
was probably the Czech. Big-band slop from WPEN (a total non-
performer on the phased wires) was raising havoc on the loop.
       [Connelly*P-MA]
 963 FINLAND (t), MAR 10 0032 - unfamiliar-language talk by man & woman
(quite possibly Finnish); atop second station (Portugal, apparently)
       that had music // 594. [Connelly*P-MA]
 981 ALGERIA, Algiers, MAR 11 0110 - flutes, big het clobbering WCAP-980.
       [Connelly*P-MA]
1008 NETHERLANDS, R. 5, Flevoland, MAR 11 0055 - likely this with tone
tests; loud, similar to WINS-1010 strength. [Connelly*P-MA]
1017 GERMANY, SWF, Rheinsender, MAR 11 0030 - GG female vocal; to good
       peak. [Connelly*P-MA]
1035 ITALY, Florence & Milan, MAR 10 2355 - II male vocal // 846; fair,

       142 08W)
1305 S. KOREA, Uljin, HLSV. 1656 Feb 27. KK talk by man //3930. Faint but

       48N, 142 08W)
1323 UNID. 1407 March 3. Woman in what sounded like Tagalog, then
oriental flute mx. However, by 1500, there was a woman talking in RR
and chimes on the hour. Chimes were unrecognizably distorted by a
hum on the channel. Is there a Russian foreign service here? (50N
       145W)
t1332 JAPAN, Nagoya, JOSF. 1602 Feb 27. Rapid JJ talk by man, fair (49 30N

1395 PHILIPPINE IS., Cebu? DYCH?. 1623 Mar 3. Man giving out the ID of
the century: "one nation, one station DZRH AM stereo" then a big
       list of frequencies, (990, 576, 1440, 981, 693, 567, 855, 531, 1035
etc.) each with the DZRH call sign and a city, including this one,
with the slogan repeated again and again. DYCH is listed with the
same address as DZRH- 666, so presume it is this one. Only other city
immediately obvious on the tape was 972--Cagayan de Oro. Good to
       poor signal. (50N 145W).
+ Likely the one w/man reading out various numbers in what sounded like

       (49 48N, 142 08W)
1458 UNID. 1418 March 3. Vocal mx sounding vaguely Arabic; no parallels
and nothing else to ID it.... (50N 145W)
1512 AUSTRALIA, Newcastle, 2RN. Likely the one with DU talk, poor, 1642 Feb
       28. (49 48N 142 08W) Again w/ man and woman reading nx 1707 Mar 2
       (50N 145W)
1503 JAPAN, Akita, JOUK. 1601 Feb 27. Fair signal w/JJ national anthem.
       (49 30N 138 40W)

I guess that prices in Venezuela, China and Jamaica could be even cheaper
than Grenada! So these prices and other cheap prices are most welcome. I
WILL COMPILE AN UPDATE of this list after ENOUGH INFORMATION WILL HAVE BEEN
RECEIVED.
Any comments or ideas on getting more prices are also welcome.
