According to the ba.radio Usenet group, this is the Revenge of Jim Gabbert
in progress. Gabbert is apparently the one who owns the 1050 license in SF,
and has bought out KPAY, with the intent of killing it. I don't know how
he's managing to simulcast on KHSL-1290, but, considering the new FCC
"rules," it won't be long til every local station you hear is controlled by
the same corporation. So much for the concept of "public" airwaves.
Gabbert became infamous in the 1970's for his tirades and manipulation
concerning KIQI-1020 in San Francisco. It doesn't surprise me he's at it
again, this time eradicating a station with a history as illustrious as
KPAY. (Ric Heald was right all along.) It also doesn't surprise me the FCC
is allowing him to get away with it.
Wonder what those poor Bay Area folks will do without XEG at night.

I need some help with an Un-IDed one.
1270 unID 03/29 2331 "W _ _ _ " (with echo effect), then "W _ _ _ the quad
cities number one hit music station. All hit ninety eight nine."
Call sounds something like WHPX, but nothing matches in AM or FM logs
and I don't recognize any of the locations listed in the logs as
"quad cities". Although I was using a loop antenna, I have no clue
as to direction because unless the loop is oriented N-S, all I get on
1270 is a loud buzz. (And, no, I did not hear the WMIZ DX test!)

Recent post card received indicated the book will not be published until

contains a complete listing of over 15,000 radio stations (AM/FM, US/Canada)
including the following information: facilities, ownership, formats, LMAs,
station personnel, phone numbers (and FAX), addresses, ratings, as well as
information on almost 400 radio markets in the US and Canada. Stations are
listed by location (complete info), frequency (frequency, call, location,

DX AUDIO SERVICE APRIL 1996
Informational Press Release
Another year of the DX Audio Service has come and gone. We started this
service in April 1985, and we're still going strong. What makes it
worthwhile are the comments from our listeners, and also the fact that The
Association of North American Radio Clubs recognized our efforts recently.
I have always maintained that we have a special group of people. Not many
organizations can work for so long, with no pay, and still produce a quality
publication.
There is an interesting event in the AM Switch column this month. Jerry
informs us that the FCC has decided to pull another boner. This time they
decided that they could cut expenses by limiting the amount of information
they provide in public notices. Instead of getting a notice like "WXXX will
move from 1470 to 1520 kHz" we will see, "WXXX to move frequency." Not
only will this affect people like the NRC, but also law firms, consulting
engineers, and many other people in the business. I foresee a catfight on
the horizon. Personally, I plan to post a protest with my Congressman,
House Rep, and Senator. After the VOA debacle of this past two years, I
really have come to the conclusion that there is nobody in any branch of
government that has any sense when it comes to broadcast activities. Maybe
there is something to the suggestion of doing away with the FCC and for a
private group to oversee broadcast operations in the United States. Just my
personal opinion, and not that of the National Radio Club or the DX Audio
Service.

some problems in the past, but they should be resolved now. The address for

The next issue of the DXAS will be a tad bit late. I will be out in Las
Vegas for the National Association of Broadcasters Convention for a week and
a half. It should be a good convention as there is expected to be more than
84,000 people in attendance, 15% of which will be from outside the United
States and Canada. The convention is getting so large that it has not
spilled over to the Sands Convention Center for the multimedia exhibits.
Each year I have been at the convention, the Las Vegas Convention Center has
expanded. Last year they purchased some apartments to the south and removed
them for their expansion. Also, the Landmark, which was located across from
the convention center, was torn down and I understand that it will turned
into parking. Those of you going to NAB, drop me a line and we'll see if we
can meet.
On the studio front, two more digital editors were ordered, one of which
is a multitrack system. We are still waiting for our local telephone
company to come up with an ISDN line, but Lima is not a community which is
known for good telephone service. So far, we are being promised June 1996
for a date. When the ISDN line is in, we will be able to trade audio clips
with other media outlets.

Are the Radio Shack's PRO-380 and PRO-394 (sens.160 dBu/m) good for
AM-DXing? What about antennas? Preamps?

What does it mean? With my sound system's tuner, I'm able to listen to many
+AM 50kw radio stations; at up to 800km (500 miles), with only a 15cm
diameter (4.5in) AM square antenna (at night!!). The tuner's AM sensitivity
is 500uV at 1000khz. Is the AR8000 better than that (above sensitivity plus
3uV AM-mode between 2 and 30Mhz)? I know it's not a specifically-designed
SWR, but I need to know if I'll be able to hear, at least, the same
stations.

The FCC is going to try it again... The attached list appeared in this
week's Broadcasting and Cable. I made several corrections to obsolete calls
(KNBA-1190, KQWB-1550, etc.) and to one bad frequency (KHRT-"130") but there
may still be a few errors. Note that KXBT's permanent frequency would be
1630, not the 1640 where they're currently operating.
The interesting thing to note is there are only *8* more stations on this
list than the previous one. I'm sure there will be more suits &
complaints...
