 From: Rick Lewis - ricklew@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

"Hi, All,
Ray Dennis noted that KXBT, 1640 kHz, is shown in the FCC database as KNBA.
KNBA is an old call for this station, which was replaced by the KXBT call
when they adopted their soul oldies format a year or so ago. It's my
understanding that their new home will be 1630, according to the latest FCC
allotment scheme, but I have no idea when this is projected to take place."

Well, I have some news. Since KXBT just bought a new AM-60P from me to
replace the exciter on their Continental and they bought it on 1630kHz, they
plan to move almost immediately. Keep listening!!
Just to brag a bit more, they are currently using one of our 30w
transmitters on 1640kHz until they switch. So if they sound good to you
DXers, I'm a happy camper :-)

Back on March 4th, I heard the KBSU-730 ID DX-test and sent them a reception
report. No reply.

Do you know of anyone receiving a verie from them for that test? If so, who
was the verie signer?

 INDIVIDUAL LOGGINGS

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

Mika Makelainen - mtm@xxxxxxxxx

I am enclosing a copy of my log, which I sent out two days ago to some
individual DXers. I just received the AM DX Newsflash, and thought that
perhaps this would also be of interest to the subscribers. You are free to
use any or all of the material, whatever you think would be useful, in the
next issue. 73's

Mika Makelainen snail: Keihastie 14 C,
   mtm@xxxxxxxxx FIN-01280 Vantaa, Finland

I'm sending you the logs of DX-pedition "LEM96", which I attended in early
March this year. It contains some nice AM catches around the world, so you
might be interested in it. Those of you who subscribe to Hard-Core-DX may
get a duplicate copy, sorry for the inconvenience.

---------------------------------------------------------
DXpedition "LEM96" to Lapland on March 2-9th 1996
---------------------------------------------------------

Participants:

Mika Makelainen (MTM), from Vantaa, Finland
Jorma Mantyla (JM), from Kangasala, Finland

Equipment:

Mika had 3 NRD-535's, Jorma an Icom IC-R71E and a spare NRD. Antenna
installations in the beginning of the expedition consisted of about ten
beverage antennae each 1000 meters in length, directed to South America,
Central America, North America, direct North and the Far East. During the
week some of the antennae were taken down as ours was the last DXpedition to
the location during this season. In the end only half a dozen beverage
antennae were in use.

Location:

An isolated lakeside cottage on the edge of a place called Lemmenjoki, which
can be translated as Love River (location: 26=FE20' E, 68=FE47' N), 40 miles
from the community of Inari), far above the Arctic circle in Northern
Finland. This Love River is a national park but is also known for placer
mining. In a vast area there are only a few houses but thousands of reindeer
and unspoiled arctic nature. DXpeditions in the same small cottage have been
held regularly since the 70's, ours was DXpedition number 96 - thus the
abbreviation and signature "LEM96", which follows each logging, and does not
refer to the calendar year.

Goal and Results:

Both participants were enthusiastic mediumwave listeners, so we tried to
hear as many new AM (MW) broadcasting stations as possible, mainly from
North America and the Far East.

DXpedition number 96 was another success story in the legendary QTH. It was
timed to coincide with top conditions of the month on AM. The timing proved
to be right, although a persistent flare caused the conditions to be less
than excellent. However, North American AM stations were audible daily
around 0000-0600 UTC, occasionally even past midday local time (1000 UTC),
when the sun was high up. On some evenings North American stations were
logged already from around 2230 UTC, before sunset in North America, and a
few daytime stations were identified.

Conditions toward Latin America were poorer than usual. A nice opening
toward Mexico was noted in the morning of Friday, March 8th.

Asian AM stations were heard around 1200-1600 UTC, before and after local
sunset in Finland. In the first days of the DXpedition the conditions were
poor, with hardly any stations from Far East, and only stations from Iran
and India audible around sunset. During the final days conditions became
better and especially Korean stations were a pleasant surprise coming
strongly with local station identifications. Also quite a few Japanese
stations of NHK-2 network were identified with local station identifications
before their close-down after 1500 UTC.

A few words about the Finnish logging practises:

Stations are only logged when they are positively identified. Tentative and
unidentified stations are not listed, unless they are of special importance.
If a particular station broadcasts both national (network) and local
programming, national programming is generally not regarded worth logging
and reporting - a local station identification is required. This limitation
applies whenever sufficient information about local programming is available
and the stations can at least theoretically be heard when they have local
programming. So for instance stations in all of Europe and North America,
and for example in China, Japan or India, are only logged if a local
identification is heard. From some countries like Iran and the Arab
countries, information about local programming is minimal, and stations are
also logged if a national station identification is heard. Colombia is a
case where practise differs.

As to the following log, only stations that are considered DX catches, are
listed. Most European stations are not regarded as rarities, and are
therefore not logged. The same goes for the most powerful AM stations in
the Middle East and some strong Asian stations. Also 150-200 of the most
common North American stations are not listed in the log, because they are
heard at least annually in Finland.

This log will be published in printed form in the "DXclusive" magazine in
Finland in issue number 8, which is issued on April 29th 1996. There will be
many more loggings to come, since especially Mika has yet to review at least
50 hours of recordings.

The stations are divided first by continent, then listed in frequency order.
In the Finnish DX circles, the British Isles and the Iberian Peninsula are
treated as separate continents from Europe to boost interest in these areas.
The form of the loggings are as follows: frequency in kHz, time in UTC, (in
some cases abbreviation of the country), station name and location, (in some
cases slogan or other information), date (day.month.) and signature (LEM96).
Stations previously unheard in Finland are preceded with a plus (+) in front
of the station name. In some loggings there are comments in Finnish, as the
list was originally prepared for a Finnish-language magazine. And for some
technical reason some of them appear as duplicated. Please try to bear. In
the time section the mark "-" before the time indicates recorded sign-off
time, the same mark after the time indicates sign-on time.

This log has been compiled and sent to the Internet by Mika Makelainen. Any
comments or questions are welcome at mtm@xxxxxxxxx

Jean Burnell - jburnell@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I was in Cuba a couple of weeks ago, and I had a great time at the beach!
Between pina coladas I made some logs/observations, some of which may be
useful! The MW band during daylight is dominated, of course, by many Cubans,
but at night only the big network Cubans were clearly audible on their most
local frequencies. Most channels yielded U.S. stations at night.
Surprisingly, no Jamaicans were audible at night or during the day. ... Jean

I managed to take an afternoon off and I went down to Cappahayden, site of
the "Newfoundland DXpeditions", for an evening of DX. Conditions were
mediocre to the south, but decent antennas can still provide some reasonable
DX for this time of year...even some "first-time" logs. I used both
receivers at once, with tape running all the time on both. I've reviewed the
tapes, and here are the logs:

Receivers: Icom IC-R71A and Drake R8A
Antennas: 800 m towards eastern Brazil
         350 m towards northern Europe
(both antennas though ICE active splitters
         into both receivers)

APR 9 2315z started out with almost certain Gambia-648 so spent 25 minutes
with this until complete fade at 2347. Senegal-765 local-like during this
period. Some Europeans also very good including Spain-585/684,
Holland-675/747, Germany-756, Switzerland-765 after Senegal s/off, Syria-783
etc. APR 10 0010 unid on 702 again, not SS but think the same one heard
last night that I thought was SS, if on and running listed 1200 kw Turkey
looks most likely for this but all talk, no music to give a hint. APR 10 PM
did a bit of tuning around but things seemed very quiet with few signals.
Not much in the mood to DX anyway and ended up spending most of the evening
on the NRC Ham Net. APR 13 0100z did a bandscan and not much of anything
except static - can it be that summer is actually finally on the way? Had
the first really warm day of the year today with temperatures way up in the
70's and I think the same for this coming weekend. Suspect DX will take a
backseat for a bit to other things like getting my yard cleaned up! APR 14
2350z bottom of band booming, big signals from Spain 585/639/684/729/738/
774/855, BBC 693, Morocco 612/702/827/1197, Senegal & Swiss 765, Egypt 864,
Algeria 891, etc so the season ain't done yet. About S5 static level along
with the good signals. APR 19 0015z some very strong signals below 1000 kHz
from Spain on many freqs, Azores 693 and 837, 0020 still huge OC on 765
which was probably Senegal, Western Sahara-711 strong, Canaries-747 fair, at
0025 Syria-783 again, 0027 Algeria-981 10/S9. APR 20 PM did a couple of
bandscans but with QRN running about S8 not much to be heard. APR 21 2345z
band very quiet but not a trace of a TA signal on the entire band except for
longwave 153/162/171/207/252. The quiet didn't last too long - it's now
0200 APR 22 and the QRN level is a steady S9 - not likely to be much DX
tonight. MAY 1 - I've hardly had the rx on for over a week. The few times
I did turn it on there was lots of QRN. Hope I haven't missed any good
African openings!

612 IRELAND FM2 Athlone APR 10 0400 - good with news in EE by a woman, way
over top of everything, best from this yet and much better than usual
       powerhouse 567. [Merriman-VA]
648 GAMBIA R Gambia, Bonto APR 9 2321 - two or more men in African
language, 2325 woman joined in and spoke occasionally, at times this
sounded like a ceremony of some kind with one speaking and the other
responding, 2340 brief exchange by two men in accented EE which ended
with one saying "thank you very much" then back to African language.
Peaking over S9 and continuously readable to 2347 when faded for
good. Senegal-765 very loud at this time. No ID but nothing else
really likely and accented EE would seem to more or less cinch it.
Hopefully will get definite ID one of these days. [Merriman-VA]
 702 MOROCCO Sebaa-Aioun C APR 14 2352 - AA sounding chant by a man, loud
and //827. This went from not being heard all winter to a nightly
       regular. [Merriman-VA]
 702 UNID APR 10 0010 - two men in ??, 0015:30 woman in ?? with occasional
brief comments by a man to fade at 0020. Was not Slovakia as 1098
checked and Morocco off at 0000. Probably the same station heard
last night that I thought was in SS but this definitely not SS. If
on at this time Turkey would seem most likely with 1200 kw but
language didn't really sound like the Turkish I was able to hear on
SW. 0050 back up again with man in ??, this time Slovakia behind with
       easy listening music. Ideas? [Merriman-VA]
747 CANARY IS RNE 5 Las Palmas APR 15 0002 - two men and a woman in SS
with news, loud and alone and //other RNE outlets as I looked for
       Burkina Faso. [Merriman-VA]
1530 SAO TOME E PRINCIPE VOA Pinheira APR 10 0335 - talk by man in slow EE,
only thing really readable here was a musical bridge between
segments, not much of a null on WSAI, //7340, 7405. [Merriman-VA]

PRESS RELEASE - DX AUDIO SERVICE - MAY 1996

We're back from the 1996 National Association of Broadcasters Convention.
Last I heard there was a record 92,000 attendees, 15% of which were
International. Some of the hits at this year was the large number of
companies that have digital workstations. Price ranges ran from a simple
$1,000 setup which you could load on a standard PC, to a proprietary system
costing as much as $57,000. In addition to the workstations, broadcast
automation was hot. A quick calculation yeilded a figure that an entire
Class 4 station, (1kw with 1 tower), or a Class A FM could be completely
constructed in a 8 foot by 8 foot room. Standard costs for broadcast
automation was in the $14,000 to $22,000 area. On the transmitter front,
there was many choices. It is obvious that many of the transmitter
manufacturers are concerned about digital, as all but one had plans in place
for installation of digital modulators. If the IBOC method is selected,
about 80% of the installtions can be done by technicians in the field,
(assuming the technician competence is on the medium to upper level). I was
also impressed by antenna designs, and that some of the AM companies are
adopting some of the old ideas in design whereby bandwidth and impedance is
more stable. I can't help but think back 18 years ago to my work at a
directional AM station where the carrier frequency had an impedance of
50+j0, while out 5kHz the impedance was 20-j200. Designs like that are now
unheard of. The same goes for the FM service. Antennas are now more
functional, and it's not uncommon to see a system where a single antenna
performs the function for several stations from 88.1 to 107.9 mHz.

The Internet was a hot topic, and just about every area had something to do
with the Internet. There were many companies selling products from Real
Audio servers, to Web page graphics, to video on demand. There was a lot of
talk about the Internet replacing radio. To that, I can only answer it with
the comment I made to one broadcaster. "If you really think that the
Internet will replace your station, I will set you up with an audio server,
and provide all the legal fees to transfer your license to me. (GNBC)"
Simply put, while I recognize the marketing value of the Internet, and while
there is the ability of some people to listen to programming of stations
over the Internet, I think it's foolish to think that the public will throw
away a media which serves it's purpose with no strings attached.

Television seems to be at a stage simular to that of the change from Black &
White to Color in the early sixties. With the proliferation of computer
systems doing video, I can see two areas where television will grow. First
is the delivery system. Television stations that use analog tape after the
turn of the century, will be like those using 2-inch video formats. There
are some problems right now with some of the digital HD formats, however, I
expect them to be corrected by the time the next NAB comes around. When
this happens, I see systems in television stations simular to radio whereby
all the programming is completely on demand by the operators via server
systems. I also see this as a bonus to those stations operating LMA or
distribution by multiple means. By this, I mean that a station could
program over the air one program (or commercial), while a feed via fiber to
a local cable company could contain different material. Since the playlist
is dictated by calls to the server, the only drawback is the capital for
master units to call up material, and the means by which to distribute the
programming, (ie: cable companies, or over air broadcasts). If the United
States government does not do something stupid like ask the present
television stations to buy their new digital spectrum, I see the quality and
community service value of stations only getting better.

There is a lot more that can be said about the NAB convention, however, let
me present to you the lineup for the MAY 1996 DX Audio Service.

========================================================================
NEXUS-International Broadcasting Association and WRMI (Radio Miami
International) signed today an agreement to provide small cultural radio
program producers access to radio audiences in the Americas, Europe and
North Africa, and encourage listener-supported international radio.
========================================================================

Milano, Italy - 26 April, 1996 : Representatives of Radio Miami
International and NEXUS-International Broadcasting Association met in
Milano, Italy, today to sign an agreement that will favour "international
public access radio" on Shortwave.

The two organizations agreed to join forces to create a system of
"international public access radio" whereby small producers of cultural
radio programs can have the same access to international airwaves that large
governments, political and religious organizations already have. Presently,
most international Shortwave radio stations are owned by governments and
large religious organizations who generally do not support the concept of
private or individual radio broadcasting, and do not allow such
organizations to purchase airtime on their facilities.

In the United States, the concept of "public access" broadcasting has
existed for quite some time. Small independent program producers may
broadcast their material on different stations at little or no cost, but
this has generally been limited to local cable television stations. However,
the concept has never been taken to the level of a national or international
radio station, and nothing on this scale has ever existed in Europe.

Representatives of the two organizations stated that this new concept should
be attractive to clubs, cultural associations, free radio producers and even
individuals in many countries who have a message for the world. For the
first time, these types of small program producers will have access to the
same wide-reaching media used by the most influential governmental and
religious broadcasters around the world.

Shortwave radio has been used for six decades by mostly governments to
broadcast political messages. Despite the advent of satellites, cable and
Internet, Shortwave radio continues to maintain a large and faithful
audience around the world as new, compact, sophisticated receivers have come
onto the marketplace at prices everyone can afford. For just the cost of a
small portable receiver, listeners can get first-hand information on world
events, lifestyles in different countries, as well as music and
entertainment from almost anyplace on earth. And unlike some of the newer
technologies, there are no subscription fees, encoded programs and bulky
equipment to deal with.

NEXUS-IBA is a non profit organization which operates IRRS-Shortwave, a
radio station in Milan, Italy, covering all of Europe, the Mediterranean and
North Africa on Shortwave. Radio Miami International operates station WRMI
in Miami, Florida, which reaches North and South America and the Caribbean.
By means of this new joint venture, virtually anyone can afford to have a
program on international airwaves at a cost of only one U.S. dollar per
minute. At this cost, small cultural program producers will be entitled to
the use of both stations, thus reaching a potential audience of millions of
listeners.

public access radio provided jointly by NEXUS-IBA and WRMI may contact via
