Last night (2/20) from 2251-2300 EST, I heard a new TIS on 1680 in Texas. A
man repeated the following announcement on a tape loop every one minutes,
ten seconds: "Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, this is WQO767,
1680-AM." It was also in at 0750 on 2/21.

Judging from the strength of the signal, I would say the power exceeds the
low wattage we usually find for TIS stations, which I believe is around 10
watts.

I have been hearing something new in NJ. The Dallas/Ft. Worth International
Airport - American Airlines - departure gate info on 1640 and arrival gate
info on 1680 since Sunday night 2/23/97.

Call is something like W?A767.

I called the airport and talked to an American Airlines employee that
confirmed it and said it was relatively new. I told him I was in NJ and that
they had a departure to Oklahoma on gate #2. He was amazed!

follows:

"I will switch the antenna at 2:00 EST on Friday March 7. I will keep it
in day pattern for 1 hour until 3:00 AM EST. Then I'll return to the
directional antenna until the regular switching time of 6:30 AM EST.

Let me know how it works out.

David Sharp - ddsradio@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

1680.02 USA, Dallas-Ft. Worth Int'l Airport, 1140, thanks to Larry Godwin
via Terry Krueger, tune-in to huge signal, woman loop tape with
terminal information, ID's as "This is WQO767..." Also, sister
TIS on 1640 also fair to good, with departing flight schedule,
same ID. This was nearly local level on my NRD 535D, but was so
strong, I even had it on the Yacht Boy 400 w/NO external antenna.
Actually, makes sense to put TIS' up here, since most (all?) new
car radios go to 1710 kHz, 1610 is all but a useless het at times
(at least here) and the migration to eMW by "in-band" broadcasters
has been slow, to say the least. (February 22, David Sharp, Lutz,
          FL-USA)

I have more news on the TIS on 1680 at the Dallas-Fort Worth International
Airport. I noted it on regular schedule the evening of February 21. A
woman in a cheery voice announced gate numbers and airplane arrival times.
Same good signal as earlier.

Terry Krueger and David Crawford in Florida have both heard this one, so it
surely is getting out.

Messages from Pat Martin of Seaside, Oregon, who phoned the station, and
from David Crawford indicate the 1680 TIS is for American Airlines (only)
arriving flight times. The airport operates yet another TIS on 1640 which
announces departure times for American.

I tried the evening of 2/21 and received the 1640 outlet, also, with a
somewhat weaker signal than 1680. There was some slop-over from KXBT on
1630. It was the same woman announcer.

On 1640 there was some QRM from a station playing music. I assume this is
the pirate in Greenacres, Washington, which I've heard repeatedly for the
past six months or so. However, that signal was weaker than the pirate
usually is.

Anyway, if you tune to 1640, you may hear the Dallas TIS and/or the WA
pirate.

The following is a list of currently-active metro-Boston/Worcester stations
and their daytime signal strengths as noted at East Harwich, MA on Cape Cod
(about 70 miles / 112 km SE of downtown Boston). This gives a fair
impression of the "get-out-ability" (transmitting efficiency) of the
various stations in this direction.

I used a Drake R8A receiver (gain: normal, bandwidth: 6 kHz) and a homebrew
RL-1 Remotely-Tuned Loop with Quantum head.

Some of the above stations are daytime only and others run uselessly-low
power at night. Even the "serious" full-time stations can all experience
some night time interference, even if only by selective fading resulting
from the blending of sometimes out-of-phase skywave and groundwave signals.
The strongest Boston stations are not necessarily the best night signals:
first skip signals from New York City stations such as 1130 and 1560 usually
pin the S-meter (S9+60). Pattern and power changes from day to night affect
the various full-time Boston area station in different ways. Most of the
channels above 1030 are badly QRM'ed by skip from elsewhere, although WNRB's
juiced-up east / southeast night beam sometimes pegs the meter, even though
the daytime groundwave is weaker. On a "good night", strengths of some of
the big-gun Trans-Atlantics can rival those of major Boston stations: e.g.
Madrid-585 similar to WBNW-590, Seville-684 to WRKO-680, and RNE1 synchros -
855 similar to WEEI-850. I've seen Saudi Arabia - 1521 peg the S-meter in
Harwich. Other stations such as Norway-1314 and UK TalkRadio-1089 have come
close.

In the past few days two new TIS stations operating from the Dallas-Fort
Worth, Texas Airport have shown up on these two frequencies. Signals very
strong over the Eastern United States - in fact the signal strength would
seem to indicate the use of more power or a much more efficient antenna than
is usual with this type of station. These are so strong that they at least
have a chance at making it to Europe and maybe beyond. Check them out -
1640 & 1680 kHz. I have no info on address and you can get the programming
when you hear them.

Well got the call signs straight on the new TIS's. At first I thought one

night and morning for three days. Even stronger than 1610 pest from MN.

Local news:

540 XETIN BC, Tijuana 2/22 1645 Back on the air today after being silent
a few weeks. Simulcasting KNNZ-540 and KGIL-1260 with "the new
KGIL, The Home of the Beatles" all-Beatles format. XETIN slips
their own ID a few seconds before the legal ID. Does NOT sound
like they've raised power. Still no sign of testing on 1650.
             (TRH-CA)
1240 KDDZ CA, San Diego 2/15 finally dropped KidStar format and resumed
simulcast of KSON-97.3 FM. Has not changed calls back to KSON
yet. "Legal" ID is usually about 10 minutes before the hour.
They just say "KSON FM 97.3" on the hour. (TRH-CA)

(Times = EST)

630 KKPL, Opportunity, WA (ex-silent) has returned to the air, per Stan
Weisbeck in Spokane. It's a local station for him. However I'm
not able to hear it in Missoula, 200 miles away.
1650 KBTL, Costa Mesa, CA is apparently going to be the new call here,
per a report in DX News. I phoned KNNZ 2/27 and receptionist said
1650 will be on the air March 1, but it hasn't started testing yet.
1650 UnID station, very weak, noted here 2/27 with man and woman
announcers from 0753-0800. There was a C&W song at 0756. Man
mentioned "from the Associated Press" and seemed to give an ID that
sounded like "Pachuca- KPAL." Woman gave weather and said "highs
in the mid-50's ... lows 40-45" and seemed to give current
temperature as 30 degrees. At 0800 she seemed to give a call that
sounded like KUAU, then seemed to say "it's 8:00, time for ABC
         News."  Time check means in EST zone, but K-call contradicts that;
I'm confused. There were moderately deep fades like I hear on
WJDM-1660, suggesting not an image. Gone when I checked at 0652.

Werner Funkenhauser - funk@xxxxxxxxxxxx

Now that I'm back to DXing, I downloaded the FCC's Western Hemsphere AM
Database file (AMDATA.DAT) and extracted the data to new WHAMLOG series a
couple of times. The old ones were from Sept 1995 --- rather dated. New file
uploads to BARC Oak archives occured on Feb. 19.

  ftp://oak.oakland.edu/pub/hamradio/docs/misc

WHAMLOG link http://www.inforamp.net/~funk is my page.

My page is set up specifically to link to Oakland and also to let DXers know
about WHAMLOG and of latest upload dates. Now that I'm back to DXing, I
intend to do this regularly, perhaps monthly if the BARC administrator puts
up with the traffic. In any event, updates will appear more frequently than
at 18 month intervals!

The FCC has been busy and continues to regularly alter data in its big
database. The new files list numerous changes, even in February. A printout
of US entries since January 1, 1996 produces 23 pages of changes to calls,
new applications, power levels, etc. There was an average of 55 station
entries per page.

The following list identifies the February 19 uploads:

1 WHAMLOG.ZIP 21484 records of Western Hemisphere AM stations
2 WHAMCAUS.ZIP--all Canadian and USA stations
 3 WHAMCA50.ZIP--50 kW Canadians (D/N/U)
 4 WHAMUS50.ZIP--50 kW USA stations (D/N/U)
 5 WHAM50KW.ZIP--ALL stations with 50+ Kw power (D/N/U)
6 WHAMUSST.ZIP--USA stations organized by States
7 WHAMCAPR.ZIP--Canadian stations organized by Provinces
 8 WHAMMXST.ZIP--organized by Mexican States
9 WHAMFREQ.ZIP--all Canada, USA, Cuba, Mexico listed by frequency

10 WHAMSRCH.EXE

File 10 is intended for use with files 1-5. WHAMSRCH is a DOS/Windows
executable file to permit searching on multiple fields (e.g. frequency and
country, city and state, geographic coordinates or geographic region, power
level and country, country and date of last FCC change, etc.) Documentation
(WHAMLOG.TXT) is packed with each archive.
