DETAILS (for some)
Friday, March 7, 1997 - WWVA-1170 Wheeling, WV will conduct a DX test using
a nondirectional antenna pattern from 2:00-3:00 am EST. The programming that
hour will consist of a satellite feed on the Interstate Radio Network with
local ads every 10 minutes or so. In particular, there will be promotions
for the upcoming Wheeling Jamboree. The chief engineer sends his assurances
that he will ask the announcer to insert some WWVA IDs every 10 minutes or
so, and he will also try to insert some morse code IDs.
Sorry, I don't have the full QSL address with me right now, but the Chief
Engineer, Roy Humphrey, has said he is interested in receiving reception
reports. This test was arranged by Paul Ormandy.

official publication of the International Radio Club of America (IRCA). IRCA
is a club devoted to the hobby of hearing distant stations on the standard
AM broadcast band. "DX Monitor" is published 30 times a year and contains
members' loggings, articles on radio stations, receiver reviews, technical
articles, DX tips, and other material of interest to the Broadcast Band

Actually got an email QSL of this last Tuesday...the first in the country,
and ONLY after many phone calls to track down the right people. Just got a
"real" QSL letter in the mail today, from my contact, Mr. Bismarck Wichy, SR
Communications Engineer, so I know if you guys use the following email
address for reception reports, you won't be sent on a "wild goose chase!"

I have been assured that because of my initial calls last Monday, that
packages for DX'ers are being assembled, and that actual QSL cards are being
printed.
Here's the letter text, from Mr. Wichy:
Dear Mr. Sharp,
Thank you for your letter documenting your reception report of DFW
International Airport's TIS Station, WQO-767.
On: 1680 KC (Departures)
on: 2-22-97 at 10pm EST
The station you heard is located at the South end of the DFW Airport. The
station itself consists of 2 LPB (Low Power Broadcasting, Inc) AM
transmitters, each running 60 watts output into two searate Valcom monopole
antennas. The Valcom antenna is a 50 foot fiberglass pole with helical wound
wire. At the top is a capacity hat and a static discharge ball.
WQO-767 is now operating under a STA (Special Temp. Authorization), the call
letters were strictly by chance even though we DO have some 767's in our
fleet! Also, BOTH stations have the same call sign which is legal under TIS
service. We are in the process of aplying for a full FCC license. American
Airlines provides audio programming and the license is owned by the DFW
Airport Board.
What you heard was NOT a tape, but two computers running a special program
for which we have applied for several patents. basically the program works
by checking our FIDS (Flight Information Display System) database which is
connected to our Sabre computer reservations system in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The
computers select different .WAV audio files and puts them together to make
understandable announcements.
Unlike past tape announcements, ours are completely dynamic. As planes take
off or arrive, the message changes. After the last flights have left at
night, the messages changes to inform next morning's flights. The computer
loks forward within a one hour window from the current time. Both stations
operate 24 hours.
This is presently the only known application in the world working in this
manner. The young lady you heard on the computer is quite human and works as
a DJ at a local radio station. I can assure you, she looks as good as she
sounds.
As you know, 1600 - 1700 is the expansion band for AM broadcasting.
Automobile and portable radios made before 1992 cannot receive these
transmissions. However, we have found a number of older car radios will tune
in 1640 KC, which is why we have departure information (the more important
of the two) on this frequency.
Presently, DFW is the only airport where this system is in operation. We are
considering expanding this service to other airports only if it proves a
beneficial service to the public. We appreciate your radio reception report.
A number of us within American Airlines are radio hobbyists ourselves
(including me, Ham Radio Extra- callsign WD0HCO).

1640 is alive with American Airline departures, IDing as WQO767 broadcasting
from Dallas-Ft Worth International airport. 1680 has American Airlines
arrivals from the same place, IDing as WQA767.
I wanted to mention something to you about dxing. You may have heard
the two TIS stations blasting out of DFW Airport on the expanded band the
past few days. (1640 and 1680) Talking to the Chief Engineer at KYNG, he's
convinced these two stations are operating with a lot more than 1kw.
Obviously, TIS stations are not allowed to operate with anything like
that much power. They are as stong as any AM station in the DFW market. My
signal meter is PEGGED when I listen to them.
You may want this little bit of history about these two stations.
American Airlines owns and operates these stations. American has had two
huge signs at DFW for years. However, someone got hurt in an accident while
they stopped to read the signs for gate info. So, they sued, won $50
million, AA took down the signs and put up the radio stations. :)
All of this is pretty much hearsay for right now, so I'm not including
attributes. But they do exist and they are being heard widely. -pls.

Those of you who subscribe to the AM-DX News Flash probably noticed last
week the announcement by Paul Ormandy that WWVA-1170-Wheeling, West Virginia
will test Friday morning March 7 from 0200-0300 EST non-directional while
making some antenna tests.
I just spoke by phone with the Chief Engineer Roy Humphrey who is interested
in receiving DX reports. He says the programming that hour will consist of
a satellite feed on the Interstate Radio Network, but there will be local
ads every ten minutes or so. In particular there will be promotions for the
upcoming Wheeling Jamboree.
I asked him if he could arrange some frequent ID's during the hour, and he
said he will ask the announcer to insert some WWVA ID's every ten minutes or
so. I also asked if he could insert some Morse code ID's and he said he
will try.
This is a golden opportunity for many of us to hear a rare state, so it's
worth a try!

There was a great high-band opening on medium-wave between 0400 and 0600 UTC
on 1 MAR. Earlier the band seemed slightly auroral with Colombia-1170 over
WWVA, etc. At 0152 UTC, there was some evidence of dawn enhancement into
the Middle East region: on the "Euro-sloper" antenna, a bubble jammer was
clobbering WSAI-1530 on the lower sideband, bits of audio from VOA Kuwait -
1548, a 1476 carrier (likely UAE), and Saudi Arabia on 1512 getting by 15 km
distant 50 kW powerhouse WNRB-1510.
Still, as late as 0304, conditions seemed slanted to the southerly regions:
at that time there was an absolutely enormous signal from VOA Sao Tome on
1530. Any of the other channel occupants - WSAI, Vatican, and Middle East
jammers - were so far under Sao Tome that they were barely perceptible.
Saudi Arabia - 1521 was good, but not exceptional, at the time.
By 0400, things got more interesting and the effects of the grey- line
terminator approaching the transmitter-dense western Europe area became
apparent. For the next two hours, nearly every channel from 999 to 1611 had
European signals coming through. The low end of the dial just had some of
the routine "bone crushers" from Spain, France, etc. The real action was on
the high end. Some of the channels shared with US stations were as good as
the "splits": notably Vatican-1530 (now taking over from Sao Tome and
totally burying WSAI as well) and Luxembourg-1440. Also I had Spain-1080
almost even with a weaker-than-usual ("skipping over") WTIC. The loggings
go to several pages. These were made at home, about 25 km inland, not from
a "super" beach site. I have found that local sunset period logs (winter:
2000-2300 UTC) are more adversely affected by moving away from the immediate
seashore. Euro-dawn (typically 0400-0700 UTC) skip arrival angles must be a
bit higher above the horizon. Signals are still best right on the coast,
but they don't die off as fast as you go inland (compared to sunset DX).
I might be going out to Rockport or Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA after work on
Tuesday (4 MAR) to look for anything I may have missed this weekend.
Sometimes a good run of European DX precedes an auroral "blow-out". That
would certainly be a welcome event. At a top-notch site such as Rockport,
one can dig for those rare Africans and deep South Americans when the aurora
blanks out domestic skip and the big Europeans that often get in the way of
the truly rare DX.

Just got back in from my 70 degree Beverage which is located in sand dunes
10 minutes tramp South of my house. Tried for the KFGO 790 DX test, but it
was on probably 1 hour too early to be heard here. Or maybe I need to erect
a 50 degree Beverage as well? :^)
Heard the airport information stations on 1640 and 1680. Quite weak, but
copyable audio at times. I understand they're 60 Watters, so that makes them
the lowest power U.S. stations I've heard. Conditions at the time weren't
the best. I could see a storm North of my position that thankfully didn't
move South (as I'm out in the open at the Beverage site), but it produced
plenty of static crashes that made copy more difficult.
Please someone tell me they QSL!

MEXICO: Found that R Variedades 1150 and Formato 21 1320, both in Mexico
City and belonging to Grupo Radio Centro have swapped freqs, Variedades on
1320 carried a promo for Formato 21 anncing 1150kHz.
N KOREA: Hwadae nominally on 801 has been heard on 804 and 799kHz.
PERU: R Exitos 1060 now carries R Victoria's "La Voz de la Liberacisn", an
annc indicated intergration of the two had taken place.
AZERBAIJAN: R Baku hrd in EE at 1800, anncing only 1296 MW not SW.
SYRIA: Noted on 827 ex-nominal 828kHz.

very limited selection of Black funk and oldies from the 60s
and 70s. Seems loudest between Mission Valley and SD Mesa
College (just South of I-805/CA-163 junction). No announcers
or IDs. Could be a pirate, or a very lousy college station.
Level with WPJ551 most of the time. Audible from my home at E
end of Chula Vista and at my office in Sorrento Mesa. Seems to

PRESS RELEASE
DX AUDIO SERVICE - MARCH 1997
With the 144th edition of the DX Audio Service, it's 30 days from another
anniversary. It was April of 1985 when the DX Audio Service published it's
first edition. The magazine was published in Westland, Michigan. At the
time it was just on C-60 tapes, and contained a montage of articles from
both DX News Magazine, and other trade magazines. In the last 12 years, the
operations moved to Lima, the tapes were standardized to C-90s, and the
editing is now done in an all digital mode.
I've often been asked if there has been any regrets or things that I would
have done different. Perhaps the only thing would have been to keep better
records. It was not till 1988 that the membership roster was put on a
computer, so trying to figure out who has been with us since "day one" is
impossible. As far as doing anything different, no. In fact, I find the DX
Audio Service a refreshing monthly project. In fact, while in the hospital a
couple weeks ago, my thoughts were to be home to be with my family, and to
get started in the editing for the March edition.
Speaking of the March edition, for those that hear it, you will notice that
it's a bit rough. The AM Switch, Travellog, Bandscan, and IDX Report were
edited prior to the hospital stay, while the rest of the magazine was
started about 4 hours after coming home. Needless to say, my voice was a
little rough, and my timing was off. April should be back to the same
energy level and usual "punch".
After Dark #7 was backed up for 60 days due to my health problems. Some of
it will have to be re-edited to bring it up to date, and make it current
with today's issues. With some luck, I will be able to attend the 1997
National Association of Broadcasters Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada. If I
do go, I will gather as much information as possible on IBOC, digital radio
issues, and whatever cards are dealt to broadcasters by the F.C.C.
