We are proud to announce for third time that the annual DX summer
meeting of Finnish DX Association will be held in Oulu, in Northern Finland.
The meeting will be arranged by Oulun DX-Klubi (DX-Club of Oulu), a local
branch of FDXA.
The Summer Meeting takes place on 1-3 of August 1997, beginning on
Friday afternoon, until Sunday afternoon.
Exact place is Virpiniemi Recreational Institute at Haukipudas, a small
village about 20 km's to the north from Oulu. And Oulu lies on the western
coast of North Finland.
Traffic links to Oulu are good: you can travel to Oulu from Helsinki by
air, train and bus. Oulu lies pretty close to border of Sweden, so you can
arrive via Sweden, too (i.e. border towns Haparanda and Tornio, about 125
km's from Oulu).
Almost 100 Finnish DX listeners are expected to participate in the
Summer Meeting. All foreign DXers as well as representatives of radio
stations are warmly welcomed to attend the meeting!

FWIW.. WMAK-1430 Madison (Nashville), Tennessee changed format this week.
It's now "Newschannel 5 Radio", news/talk format. It includes simulcasts of
most WTVF-channel 5 newscasts, simulcasts of programs on their "Newschannel
5+" on Nashville cable channel 65, delayed rebroadcasts of programs from
both TV operations, plus material from the All News Channel and Bloomberg
Information TV.

Earlier this week it was announced CKUA would return to the air at 1800 MDT
on Friday April 25th. Noted back on 580 khz with test tones and
announcement about resumption on Thursday 24th at 0650 MDT. Their FM relay
here in Medicine Hat wasn't back on yet. (Pimblett-AB)

I talked with Elaine Hawkes, Chief Engineer of KNOB-540-Costa Mesa, CA on
April 29. She explained that XETIN in Tijuana, BCN Mexico is running the
Bach classical music program now on 540 with 500 watts and ID's as X-Bach. I
heard it around 0800 EDT April 28 with a strong signal. KNOB continues to
operate on 540 with Beatles music, so the two no longer simulcast. In fact,
they interfere with each other.
She added that KBTL-1650 won't be coming on until August or September.

COMMENTS
Hey what an opening to Colombia. Three new ones in about an hour. Love that.
The wether was super with above zero temps. Never even had to light the wood
stove until sunset. Sat around in short sleeve shirts and did not need snow
boots. However rubber boot were a must. About half the farm field was snow
free but mud or water. Found out that a toboggan can cross 20 feet of water
with 75-100 pounds of equipment and float over the water which is 8 inches
deep. Thought we would have to portage but walked in the mud and water with
some extra effort but no big deal. The DX was very nice with new ones from
Colombia and the USA. Lots of new Longwave beacons and one new pirate also.
Not used to the heat but it was a great time. Will have to go back in a
couple of weeks and wind up the wires so the farm can return to agriculture.
Did find one of the missing beverages we could not use last two times. Seem
about 3 feet of snow melted leaving it exposed. One is still out there under
the last 1-2 feet of snow. Wet feet but good DX is always worth it. The
harder the walk the better the talk on the radio.

I heard an unidentified beacon on approximately 1685 kHz. on April 21, 1997,
around 1200 GMT (0800 EDT). It transmitted dual Morse-code messages. In
low-pitch code were the letters "IRA" or IRI." In high-pitch code I heard
what seemed "CRT" or "RRT" and also "NR." The time of reception suggests
the Pacific area. I don't see anything similar listed.

There was a round of E-mail in February which discussed a mega DXpedition to
the Coast in mid-June when David Clark, Jean Burnell, John Fisher and I plan
to be there. (I may be already in the San Juans or I may make a special trip
from Oklahoma) At that time, Bruce suggested finding a suitably situated
rental house so that we could all be together, etc. Guy volunteered to
check out any houses that anyone found that might work. The last e-mail
that I saw was from me and it suggested that we pursue a twin track to make
something happen: The northwest guys look for alternate sites, houses, etc,
and that Clark (and I) would pursue the Grayland Motel as a back-up.
Since then, we have heard nothing and David and I let the motel plan
languish until about a week ago. At that time, David confirmed that Jean
Burnell (St. Johns NFLD), John Fisher (used to be in Ontario, now Manitoba
or some other godforsaken northern prairie location) and I (godforsaken
southern prairie location) were all "on board" for June.
He then contacted the motel and there was both good and bad news.. You have
to remember that A) The owner runs at 100% occupancy all year and doesn't
NEED any of our business and B) The owner darn near threw David and us
freeloaders out last year for disturbing guests on both sides of us thru the
paper thin walls... he was VERY angry.
When David talked to the owner last week, he was willing to rent two rooms
for double occupancy to us but had no interest in providing any services to
non-guests. Under these circumstances and given that Burnell is flying 3000
miles and the rest are coming a long way and taking (family ) vacation time
to do DXing, I'm sure that we would all agree that endangering the
DXpedition by trying to sneak in at 3 AM past the owners house just isn't in
the cards. Frankly, I don't know what I was thinking when I suggested DXing
from his parking lot... what with the inevitable attendant door slams,
gravel crunches, etc. I also got too enthusiastic when I suggested sneaking
in again. That kinda behavior just isn't what grown guys in their fifties
and forties oughta be doin .... at least not unless Marilyn Monroe or Cindy
Crawford is breathlessly waiting in Room 15 :>}
What it comes down to is the four outta state folks have a DX location and
the Washington DXers do not, unless you all have done planning that we don't
know about. None of the "Canadians + 1" are at all happy about this
situation. We had hoped for a mega DXpedition at least for the weekend of
June 21 & 22 and we hope that you all have already gone ahead looking for a
house or alternate location.
Assuming that you haven't, I've given some thought to alternatives that I
might suggest:
1) As Bruce suggested in February, find a house for a massive three day
weekend DXpedition and we can join it after three/four days at the motel.
Neither the Canadians nor I can do the house finding from where we live. Has
anyone followed up on this suggestion? Bruce? Phil? Is it too late,
since the weekend in question is just 60 days away?
2) The Washington crowd could make reservations at Guy's current favorite
DX site (#157) at Ocean Shores State Park just across the Harbor mouth from
Grayland/Westport town. Guy strings beverages west and southwest from the
camp site... then alla the WA crowd can DX there and meet us in Westport
every night for supper and sharing DX tips. There is a ferry across the
mouth of Gray's Harbor, but I'm not sure of the schedule... It might have to
be lunch instead. Or failing the ferry, we could meet in Aberdeen for
supper each night. I understand from Guy that site #157 is the ONLY site
that you can effectively string beverages from.... if this is of interest,
you might want to get that site reserved quickly.
3) Deal officially with the Dept.. of Natural Resources and get permission
to DX at Midway Beach again. It is only 3 miles from the motel site... We
could meet for supper each night, swap DX tips, etc. This probably should
have been listed as option 1 or 2. I'm frankly a little surprised that no
one has done this yet. Midway Beach is the finest QTH that I've found on
the West Coast, including Hall-Patch's sites. We ought not give it up
without a fight. The method that I'd suggest is writing to the DNR office
in charge and explaining that we are all mature, conservation-oriented men
and that we VOTE. If the answer is "no", then contact your state legislator
and let him/her talk to the DNR. If I were legally a resident, I'd happily
lead the charge. I may do so this summer anyway, if no one else takes the
initiative.
4) Failing all else, would anyone of the WA DXers be interested in a social
evening with the Canadians + 1? Someone could get with Reid Wheeler and
reserve the backroom of some restaurant in Olympia and we can all spend a
great evening together as a social affair. If nothing else happens, I know
that David Clark would really like to at least renew acquaintances and John
Fisher and Jean Burnell are anxious to meet you guys. I'd like to see
everyone, too, since I tend to spend too much time in the San Juans and
don't see nearly as many/much of you all as I'd like.
Anyway, that is the picture. We'd all like to have a great single
DXpedition like the one that I organized at Grayland in March of 1990, but
it just isn't going to happen, unless you all can find us a house. One
other possibility springs to mind. When I was first checking out the
Grayland area is 88 or 89, Guy and I stayed at The Chateau Westport, a
highrise hotel/condo facing the beach over about 1500 feet of scrub. We
DXed from a first floor room successfully. We'd probably have to rent three
adjacent rooms on the first or second floor and DX from the middle one, but
it is another possibility to get us all in one spot for the weekend. Again,
it is not something that we can organize from here.
All in all, if we can't have one big weekend DXpedition in one site, the
bi-polar possibilities seem good, at least at Ocean Shores.
Please let us know what develops as you all chew over possibilities.

IRCA Mexican Log, 4th Edition
The IRCA MEXICAN LOG log lists all AM stations in Mexico by frequency,
including call letters, state, city, day/night power, slogans, schedule in
UTC/GMT, formats, networks and notes. In addition, stations that have
changed frequency since 1990 are cross-referenced on the old frequency. The
call letter index gives call, frequency, city and state. The city index
(listed by state, then city) includes frequency, call and day/night power.
The log has been completely updated from the 1994 edition and carefully
cross-checked by IRCA members in Mexico and the US. This is an
indispensable reference for anyone who hears Mexican radio stations. Size
is 8 1/2" x 11" and three hole punched for easy binding (optional).

This is the Seventeenth edition and has been updated through September 1996.
This annual edition contains 312 pages, 8 1/2" x 11" size, 3-hole punched,

I received a pleasant surprise in the mail today. A full data QSL
Card/Folder for the 2 new TIS Stations in Dallas/Ft. Worth. Details are
shown below.........

Great QSL Folder received from Joe Blair N5WB, Communication's
Administrator. Both Envelope and QSL are printed on HIGH QUALITY Linen type
Grey paper. QSL Card is a 3 part fold out card.which has one of Joe's
Business cards also mounted on it. Full data card confirming my reception of
both stations. Says the Transmitters are FCC Type accepted 60 watt Solid
State ...and manufactured by LPB INC. of Frazer, Pa. They feed VALCOM
V147CL2-FT-TH 44 foot antennas....which are manufactured in ONTARIO,
CANADA!! The antenna ground plane is a 40 foot copper rod sunk vertically in
the ground at the antenna base.

Allan H. Weiner has always believed that the airwaves are free, and that
they rightfully belong to the people. Ever since his childhood, this gifted

teenage pirate radio adventures, but failed to capture even a fraction of
the dedication and the intensity that this heroic free speech advocate has
brought to his endeavors throughout his life.
The trials and tribulations that Weiner endured to bring Radio New York
International to the air are legendary. The FCC's illegal seizure of
Weiner's radio ship the M/V Sarah in 1987, which he designed and built to
broadcast from the international waters off the coast of New York, made
headlines around the world.
Weiner's story is both a heart-warming tale of an electronics genius at
work and a chilling indictment of government disregard for personal
liberties and free speech.
But despite the FCC's efforts to silence him, Weiner has persevered. And
he continues to work towards a future when the airwaves are open to all who
choose to use them and the world becomes a better place because of the free
transmission of knowledge.
Access to the Airwaves: My Fight For Free Radio, Weiner's autobiographical
account (as told to writer Anita Louise McCormick), is a powerful rendition
that should be read by all who believe that speech should be unfettered, and
that fighting the powers-that-be is an often unheralded necessity.

In two weeks I'm off on a mid-Spring DXPedition to Marble Canyon, where I'll
spread a couple of serious beverages. The goal is to record the station
breaks of dominant stations on every domestic 1-A and 1-B and then go for
the secondary ones as luck will have it.

Hi. My good buddy Curt at 'ZZO tipped me off to this cool feature of the
WNEW web site. You can call select three different visual "perspectives" of
their studios and point your mouse in any direction for a rotating
360-degree view. It's pretty wild and a great feature to have on a radio
station web site. Plus, I see that they have FOUR of the Denon CD players
in the air studio. I'm drooling!!!!
