Howdy all & welcome to PiPa#195! (This is just the cover sheet, PiPa #195
should either be an attached file to this or should follow right after my
own greetings & name). If you only get the cover letter & not PiPa#195, drop
me a line...it's happened a few X....
What is this?
PiPa is a fortnightly hardcopy and e-mail logsheet that's dedicated to
shortwave pirate radio in North America. If you want it via e-mail, it's
free. If you want it via hardcopy, you'll be subjected to a nominal monetary
fee and a substantial strain on your eyesight (tiny letters that might be
smudged, broken up, or cut off). I've been doing this since 1989 & it's a
real pain in the butt, but still it's fun & it's always nice to hear from
everyone.
If you don't want PiPa, write back & tell me. I'll take your name off my
list. I don't have an auto sender/receiver, so if I forget to take your name
off the list, please don't send 20 "UNSUBSCRIBE!" messages! I'm REAL person
with FEELINGS! :o)
How did you get on this list?
All of you folks are either first-, second-, or third-time receivers of
PiPa. Almost all of you are either FM pirates ("microcasters") or European
shortwave pirate listeners. I got your e-mail addresses from web pages,
newsletters, and e-mail messages recently because I thought you might be
interested in some of this stuff. If you have questions, etc., feel free to
drop me a line.
My standard note about Radio Free Internet!
I've got a website up & running called Radio Free Internet! It's dedicated
to FM/SW/AM pirating, Internet broadcasting, Part 15 radio, cable-access TV,
etc. It's only been up for about a month, so it has a LONG way to go, but
it's getting there. Right now, It's got classified ads, information about
books, recent pirate news, PiPas, info about Hobby Broadcasting magazine,
links, etc. I've been adding new bits of info & graphics everyday.
I'm on the lookout for more info, so feel free to sling anything my way!

(this is my "news update" about RFI!)
I know I've mentioned this a bit recently, but be sure to check out Radio
Free Internet! from time to time if you have an unlimited Internet service
provider. I try to update it about once per day & (in the News section)
there's usually lots of schedules, tests, etc. from the US & Europe, in
addition to loggings of SW pirates from N.America. I've seen a few people
write "I didn't know that R.Metallica WW isn't yet using BRS" or "You mean
FRS Holland is testing tonight?" This stuff's all been in the News section
of RFI!
Also, I've been adding lotsa links to different unlicensed broadcaster
sites. Some of these are little info pages that I've put up for the station.
If you have a station & want something up on RFI, just send it via e-mail
(if you want to include a QSL, please send it via hardcopy & I'll scan it
in). For some examples of these pages, see the pages for Superclan Radio & ZYQ.
If you want a "real" Web page (with graphics, multipages, animation, etc.)

News
Swamp city here! Well, at least I've been swamped in radio logs, not water.
Radio Metallica Worldwide's been living up to their name with literally
dozens of broadcasts that can be heard all around the world. I've heard them
on a radio with no antenna & Rob Keeney's heard'em on a Radio Shack
shortwave kit! Some of the biggest RMWW news is that the mail's going
through. Dr. T said that QSLs are being worked on & shows from other
stations will be relayed. Also, he says the power really is 10 kW (as high
as 10.6 kW, as low as 9.2 kW)! Give a listen--even if you aren't in
N.America!...
This week, I received a few reports for WMPR, but I'm not sure why.
The stn has a long track record of not having an address or QSLing anyone...
Speaking of longtime no-QSLers, an old show from the Voice of
Communism was aired around 7/4. This station was an early 80s parody of
Radio Moscow and the announcers did a fantastic job! They were slick enough
that they even had a number of live call-in shows, where they'd harass the
callers with their heavy-handed style of communism--and pull it off!...
Radio Free Speech returned with the relay service on 6975, but only
a few heard it. It was totally inaudible here...
In years past, I've heard people question the legitmacy of reports
for US stations from Europe. Matthias Gatzke in Germany topped'em all! He
heard two US stations that no one else could get a clear ID on & heard the
one station's announced address before the maildrop even publicly announced
it. No doubt he really heard the show. Great job!
I'd seen some reports that the Radio Clandestine show from this week
was relayed. According to some inside sources, it really was RC. For those
of you who wondered if R.Clandestine was a new station, nope, it's about 23
years old this year, and it was tremendously active through some parts of
the 1980s...
Likewise, Hope Radio International also has a long past. It was
possibly the most active station from 1989-1992...
I'd better go for now before I spend my day reminiscing about old pirate
stations!

Williams, a long-time FM pirate from IL, who has a station now known as
"Black Liberation Radio" (not the same as the original BLR from IL).
Book news & ad:
"Access to the Airwaves" is available via Cabinet Comm. This is a biography
of Allan Weiner--a guy who started a pirate AM station in the late 60s & was
being followed by "secret" government agent (CIA? FBI? NSA?). After decades
of pirate radio, he created Radio Newyork International--voted the best
radio in the US in 1987 by "Rolling Stone." This pirate was the legendary
offshore station that was splattered all over the news 10 years ago.

"1997 Pirate Radio Directory" is now available for $11 + $2 s/h
(+sales tax for PA residents). This is like an 8"x11" format book of North
American shortwave pirates that were active in 1996. It starts with a great
into about pirate listening & goes into a bunch of station listings that
include formats, some skit info, DJ names, etc.
"Pirate R. Operations" is now available. It's 376 pages of info about
how pirates put a station together & successfully broadcast. It's mostly
intended for pirate listeners, & beginning & intermediate pirates in the US,
but if you're an old pirate or from outside of the US, it should still be an
interesting read. Cost is $18 + $2 shipping in US (add $1.20 sales tax for
Pennsylvania residents only). (list price is $19.95)
I've finally got more copies of "Pirate Radio: The Incredible Saga
of America's Illegal, Underground Broadcasters." This book is 340 pages of
info about pirate r., the history, current stations, how to hear pirates,
etc. It has an audio CD with about 18 min of audio clips. Cost is $25 + $2
shipping in the US (add $1.62 sales tax for Pennsylvania residents only).

Charlie Crawford: "A QSO between WARR and R. Tellus was heard on 6-30. Captain
No Beard said that he has about 10 letters to finish QSLing and they will be
in the mail by end of the week to his maildrop.... WARR says he's running 40
watts".
Shawn Axelrod: "I was expecting to hear more stations this weekend but I
suppose I was listening at the wrong times. Still it was fairly fruitful in
number. R. Metallica still puts in the best signal of any station on the air.
The 0220 broadcast came up with a solid S8-9 on the Drake S meter".
Larry Russell: "KOLD provided nice dinner mx for a very late supper. Several
pirates did too much talk over music/sound effects. If I want to hear CW,
I'll listen to the ham bands".

Comments:
Another weekend of bad conditions but good signals later on in the afternoon. Shamrock on 6216 gave Laser bad splash and JRR was wipped out by QRM on 6242 at 0915 but for only 5 mins. Great non-stop music on 6273 but a shame about the signal. The Farmers signal was massive all day on 6303 but the music was
awful.
