GLEANINGS
-----------------------

ARGENTINA - 8098.00 USB Radio Continental, Buenos Aires; 0620-0900 fair
signal on 10/10/97 .. oldies mx px "Algo para Recordar". Every 30
minutes, the news flash "Informa tivo Continental" was heard. ---
8098.00 USB Cadena Cien; is undoubtedly a new entry on this shortwave
feeder. 0730-1015* on 11/10/97. Fair but sometimes mixing with another
Argentine station on USB which identified itself as "Radio Antena ... La
Favorita". English romantic vocals and YL DJ. The shortwave relay was
suddenly closed at 1015 as usual. At 0841 canned ID was announced as
"102.7 (ciento dos punto siete)Cadena Cien Rosario", so I presume that
the station is in Rosario. But after then at 0918 another Canned ID said
"94.7 (noventa y cuatro punto siete)Cadena Cien, ciudad de Cordoba."
Seemingly, the station broadcasts with some FM repeaters in the country,
but it is necessary to make more check on the station if it is audible
again via shortwave feeder. No puedes ayudarme GIB? (TIN / Relampago Dx

ARMENIA - Letter to Guido Schotmans: "Dear Guido. I regretfully have to
inform you that I am no longer associated with the Voice of Armenia
radio station. We are closing this temporary International Relations
office by the end of this month, and due to an administrative decision,
there shall neither be a 50th anniversary celebration, nor a "Special
event" ham station to commemorate this event. Kindly make no further
mention of this topic to your esteemed readers, not to cause them any
further inconvenience. For QSL'ing and other related correspondence, I
advise your readers to write directly to the radio station in Yerevan. I
sincerely apologize for the inconveniences we may have caused you.
Armenag Sanasaryan.(Guido Schotmans, 27 September / EDXP # 63).

AZERBAIJAN - Voice of Justice bcs on SW, is a new independent radio
station broadcasting its first progrs in the Azerbaijani language in
Stepanakert. Is the first non-state independent radio sce in the
Nagornyy Karabakh Rep. Sked: Tues & Thurs at 1500, and repeated on Wed &
Fri at 0600 on 9677 and 101 MHz. Observed here Fris[!] 1500-1532, actual
centered on v9677.31, then abruptly off, wobbly carrier, very poor audio
modulation, progr content couldn't realized, tried AM, SYNC, CW, LSB,
and USB mode, but best in AM mode. (Wolfgang Bueschel, 3 October / EDXP
# 63).

CHINA PR - CRI inaugurated a new Xinjiang transmitter site for external
broadcasts on 29 August. Since then, a lot of Dxers worldwide, like Bob
Padula, Noel Green and Victor Goonetilleke, noted increased usage of
more SW channels by CRI Beijing with a superb powerful signal, and
audiowise a very clean signal quality. Freed some SW stations in
mainland China to use for jamming transmissions against VoA and RFA
broadcasts. [Bueschel-FRG/WWDXC Top News / NASWA LN Oct. 97)

COTE D'IVOIRE - Radio ELVA in Abidjan is waiting for a license to
broadcast. 11 people are taking part in an advanced training seminar to
staff the new station, and initial broadcasting could begin within eight
weeks of receiving the license. It's not known whether this will be a
shortwave or mediumwave station. (Field, MI USA / NASWA LN Oct 97)

CUBA - RHC in English Sat Oct 4 at 2110 on 13715 was in USB instead of
usual AM and nothing on the former USB outlet 13725 (Glenn Hauser, OK
USA / SW/DX Report 16 Oct 8 )

CZECH REPUBLIC - After several more czechs I finally got the entire
announcement from R. Prague I mentioned previously, Oct 6 at 1306 on
13580. Said that as far as they knew, the English and Czech services
would continue next year, but they were worried about German, French and
Spanish as the Minister of Foreign Affairs has said they would be
discontinued. Listeners who would like to express their solidarity with
Radio Prague broadcasters and listeners in these languages were asked to
write by Oct. 15 to the MFA (Glenn Hauser, OK USA / SW/DX Report 16 Oct
8)

ECUADOR - 5060.19 R. Nacional Progreso, Loja, 0100+ noted back with M
harmony vocals with high-pitched, plucked strings; other selections
sounded like Andean polkas. M DJ with TC, numerous IDs "Esta es
Radiodifusora Nacional Progreso, transmitiendo desde Loja...", another
ID just as "Radio Progreso." (4-Sep/Novello, NC USA/ NASWA LN Oct 97)

ETHIOPIA - [non]. Dave Kenny of BBCM had their Nairobi unit check out
our unID on 5910 UT Sat 0100-0159, and here is the answer: Rainbow
Radio, a previously unheard Ethiopian opposition station in Amharic
(Keste Damena Radio), the voice of peace and brotherhood. Also announces
broadcasts to Eth/EAf Thu 1600-1700 on 15365; WEu Sat 1900-2000 on 6130
(WORLD OF RADIO 913 / SW/DX Report 16 Oct 8)

HUNGARY - After six years of silence Radio Budapest goes back to speak
Italian. For five weeks, from October 27 to November 24 , the editorial
office of Szulofoldunk, the program for the Hungarians in the world,
will start a short transmission in Italian on Monday, realized with the
collaboration of the Italian radiolisteners Luigi Cobisi and Paolo
Morandotti. For the first time an international radio station reopens
its own programs in Italian language, even if for a limited period,
giving the possibility, for listeners of all over the world, for
resuming a discussion interrupted on June 30th 1991, when Radio Budapest
was forced, by the assumption of new obligations toward its own fellow
citizens and the bordering countries, to cease the Italian programs.
Nevertheless, as a consequence of our contacts at the 30th European DX
Council (Florence, April 1996) and at European Journalists Association
Congress (Budapest, October 1996), it was possible to obtain a space of
few but meaningful minutes in Italian language. The responsible of
Szulofoldunk Bela Szomraky, perfectly bilingual and chief editor of the
past Italian program, will be the first Italian program guest, and will
present testimonies, memories and voices upon the past and nowadays
Italo-Hungarian relationships; he agreed to edit the first broadcast,
allowing to the Italian editing staff for the other programs. For this
occasion it has been realized three unusual initiatives of contact with
radiolisteners: 1) an extraordinary edition of the Florence DX
Newsletter, the Florentines DX-ers newsletter --- 2) the web site <
http://www.intrasoft.it/italradio >, realized by the Intrasoft of Milan,
Italy --- 3) a special QSL from Budapest that will be emitted by Radio
Budapest for reception reports to the Italian program. The Italian
program schedule is as following (October 27th, November 3rd, 10th, 17th
and 24th): to Europe 1950-1957 UTC on 3975 9840 and 2150-2157 UTC on
3975 9530 --- to South America 2350-2357 UTC on 6165 9835 11660
--- to North America 0150-0157 UTC on 6030 9840 and 0320-0327 UTC on
5905 9840 --- to Australia 1050-1057 UTC on 15395 17790 21560.
Internet web < http://www.wrn.org/stations/hungary.html > Also on
Satellite: Eutelsat to Europe 2250-2257 UTC on 11.596 Ghz, (16 degrees
east, horizontal polarization, audio 7.02 Mhz) --- Galaxy 5 satellite to
America 2250-2257 UTC on 3.820 Ghz (vertical polarization, audio 6.2
Mhz). For more info, please contact Luigi Cobisi, Firenze - Italy,
e-mail: < luigi.cobisi@xxxxxx > fax: +39 55 2340266, or Bela Szomraky,
Budapest - Hungary, fax: 0336 1 328 8838 (e--mail unclear on the fax
received --ed.) (Luigi Cobisi, Italy, via fax in Italian, translated

INDONESIA - RRI Fak Fak switched its frequency from 7231kHz to 4789.1kHz
in the local evening broadcast (Juichi Yamada, JAPAN / Jembatan DX # 30)

IRELAND - For the realization of their more exciting enterprise, the
students of the Senior Ballyfermont College will begin soon to broadcast
towards the entire world. Emerald Radio, this is the name of the new
broadcasting station, was adjusted for transmitting its programs on four
media: Internet, short waves, satellite and many local radio stations in
all over the world. A series of Irish theme programs assures that there
will be a sparkle mixture of new ideas to launch Emerald Radio on
airwaveses. " Unsigned " program will examine the tops and low, the
ambitions and the aims of three musical bands without recording
contract; " Cutting Rhythms " program will deal with the music world,
from the Underground to other kinds of music well appreciated from a
larger spectrum of audience; while " The Sporting Tradition" program,
with Shane Keogh, will deal the backstage of many ancient and
traditional Irish sports. With many other programs, from the traditional
music, to some investigations through the Irish newspapers, tours in
Irish valleys, writers and artists, it looks as if the students of the
Ballyfermont College could be able to gain a good position on
broadcasting market. For more info please, contact the following web
site: < http://www.emeraldradio.com > (From an article of the Irish
magazine "The Big Issues" July 16th 1997, translated in Italian by
Andrea Griffante, Italy for Radiorama # 10/97 / translated again in
English by G.Serra, -ed.)

JORDAN - Winter time is back as of Sept 28, and English from R. Jordan
has shifted to 1100-1730, one hour later, on 11690 (Edwin Southwell,
England, WORLD OF RADIO 912 / SW/DX Report 15 / 97- October 2) Still not
making it here at 1245 check Oct 2, tho Israel was booming in on 15615
(Hauser/SW/DX Report 15 / 97- October 2 )

LAOS - Lao National Radio. 10-3-97, 1140-1210 UTC. 6130 weak, but
steady signal in the clear. Talks by woman in presumed Lao, haunting
local music, clock tower gongs on the hour, into news. Usual adjacent
and co channel pests have been absent of late, and this time of year is
great for sunrise/sunset enhancement reception of Southeast Asia here in
the Southeastern U.S. 73, J.D. Stephens - Madison, Alabama, U.S.A. (via
E Bueneman, MO USA)

MADAGASCAR - Radio Malagasy Director Mamy Rafenomananantsoa says their
transmitters will upgraded with some more powerful ones from Radio
Netherlands. (Vaghjee, MAURITIUS / NASWA LN Oct 97)

MADAGASCAR - Schedule of Radio Nationale Malagasy dated 4 Sept:
0300-0500 3140 5010 --- 0500-1500 5010 6135 7155 9690 ---
1500-1900 3140 5010. (Vaghjee-MAU/Hard Core DX / NASWA LN Oct 97)

MALDIVES - Voice of Maldives is still planning to returning to
shortwave, but not until the middle of next year with Australian aid.
The frequency to be used has not been finalized yet, it would be most
likely in the 25 meter band from 0600 to 2400 Maldives Time. This is per
station personnel. (Vaghjee-MAURITIUS / NASWA LN Oct 97)

MEXICO - XERTA is still testing on 4800. Once complete, unless plans
change, the next frequency would be 15120 (Hector Garcia B., Mexico, RIB
/ SW/DX Report 15 / 97- October 2)

MEXICO - RE: XERTA. Hi! The correct name is Radio Transcontinental de
America, address Casilla 653, 06002 México DF. Take them while they are
testing - they may stop answering when the operation is running
properly. They will test on 4800 and 15120 kHz. 73's Håkan ---
Although not a BCB tip, it is a good one! I am listening to them now on
4800.7kHz with strong signals in Spanish and occasionally French. They
are calling themselves "the first commerical shortwave station in
Mexico". 73, Chris G Knight (via E Bueneman, MO USA)

NORWAY - The Student Festival UKA'97 in Trondheim (10 October to 2
November. As usual during UKA, the Student Festival's radio station
"Ukesendern" will be transmitting on shortwave(SW) and mediumwave(MW)
(and FM of course). The plan is to transmit 24 hours a day on 7215 and
1485 kHz, with an output power of approx. 1000 Watt (SW) and 100 Watt
(MW). We will use a GroundPlane antenna (approx. 1/4 lambda) on SW and
an Inverted Vee on MW. The transmitters are located in Trondheim. For
more information please take a look at our web-pages <
http://www.stud.ntnu.no/studorg/la1k/us/ >, or write me a mail.(Lars

TRONDHEIM, Norway ( via EDXP # 63).

PARAGUAY - Plans of LV del Chaco Paraguayo (610 MW) to come on SW
within the next year or so are "coming to the front burner." With MW,
they now reach about 300 km; they would like to be a regional b/cer and
reach Brazil, Argentina and Bolivia, "the heart of S.Am." Power will
likely be 1 to 5 kW, perhaps converting an existing 1 kw MW xmtr, or
maybe a 10 kw MW xmtr, or perhaps picking up a used SW xmtr. One antenna
has already been designed. (Interview with Arnie Boschmann, Prgm
Director of LV del Chaco Paraguayo, on DXPL via NU 5 October / EDXP #
63).

PERU - Radio Chasqui has the address of Apartado 368, Cuzco. The
station, operated by Baptist Mid-Missions, is managed by Andres "Andy"
Tuttle H. The station's name is derived from the Chaskis, who were the
messengers of the Incas. (Field, MI USA / NASWA LN Oct 97)

SAN MARINO REPUBLIC -Incredible but true: few nights ago I dreamt that

SOMALIA - (?) [non]. I taped the last 50 minutes of the UT Sat Sept 27
airing of the un ID program via Germany at 0100-0159. Reception was
quite good, and I listened carefully for any familiar words. I never
heard "Radio" or anything recognizable as an ID; nor "Oromo". I did hear
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Somalia, Aydid and The Economist; the second
half-hour was mostly music, and the final announcement before closing at
0159, where one would expect an ID, seemed to include the word "Somali".
I've included a tape of this announcement on World of Radio 912 this
week, and hope someone can recognize the language if not identify the
program (Glenn Hauser, OK USA / SW/DX Report 15 / 97- October 2)

TAJIKISTAN - Since Sept 11th the Voice of Tibet 11570 kHz (via Dushanbe)
is being jammed by China, during its scheduled transmission in Tibetan
1225-1255 UTC. The VOT signal is under the CNR signal.
(13-Sep/Goonetilleke-CLN/UADX/WWDXC Top News/Bueschel-FRG / NASWA LN Oct
97)

TURKEY - VOT is looking for a frequency to replace 7300 at 0300 in
English for W97 which will then be at 0400; I suggest 5870, but not sure
if they can go that low (Gigi Lytle, TX, via Joe Hanlon, WORLD OF RADIO
912 / SW/DX Report 15 / 97- October 2)

UNITED ARAB EMIRATES - The Oct MUF peak seems underway, with good
reception some days from Dubai 21605 in English at 1329, and then in
Arabic as late as 1600 with lots of great music. On Oct 5 it was booming
in here, strongest signal from hemisphere east. Also confirmed on
announced //13675--next best, 13630 and 15395, both poor. NERRS
overlooked the 1330 English in DX Window. Current feature after the news
at 1337 is Modern Trends in Arab Thought (Glenn Hauser, OK and WORLD OF
RADIO 913 / SW/DX Report 16 Oct 8)

USA - Afropop Worldwide, a weekly stereo hour on public radio stations
with Georges Collinet, who also works for VOA, has an episode titled
"DXing Africa"! This info appeared in October previews on the KMUW.org
website for Saturday, Oct. 11 at 9 pm in Wichita; times and dates will
vary elsewhere (Hauser, RIB / SW/DX Report 15 / 97- October 2)

USA - Ham Radio & More announced it was giving up and its final
broadcast would be Oct 26; live Sunday 2200-2300 on WWCR 5070 [but Oct
26 after time change it will be 2300-2400] (Pete Costello, NJ, WORLD OF
RADIO 913 / SW/DX Report 16 Oct 8)

USA - Just before WOR 912 broadcast, Oct 7 at 0400 on 5085-USB, Dave
Frantz on WGTG announced that their second transmitter would begin
testing in a few weeks. I understand he plans to use more tropical-band
frequencies near to WWCR. He's looking for new customers and offers low,
low rates (Glenn Hauser, OK USA / SW/DX Report 16 Oct 8)

VATICAN - For the first time in its history, Radio Vaticana is at the "
Stadio Olimpico " here in Roma during the match of the Italian
National Soccer Team with England Team last October 11. The Pontifical
station confirmed two young editors for this big event, Luca Collodi and
Giancarlo La Vella, (may be for a next radio sporting service ? -ed.).
Nowaday Radio Vaticana presents an approach at the sporting events, as
social fact as well as custom fact. It realized already sporting
services on important events, like the Olimpic Games and the "
Universiadi ". Last year Vatican Radio followed the final soccer match
of Champions League Ajax - Juventus. (Adaptation of an article of Il
Messaggero, local newspaper of Roma /G.Serra, Italy --ed.)
