I believe I have heard WCMQ here in Scotland on 1700 this morning (8 Nov
0730 UTC) In Spanish using the call "La Gran Cadena" . Good signal
with
many mentions of Cuba and one of Florida. Could this be it?

*** COMMENTS ***

Just a few logs here this time from a quick 2.5 hour session at
Harwich
on Saturday night. It was pouring with rain at the time and there were
gale
force winds. Static crashes were hitting over S9 (more like July than
November). Lightning strikes must have been within 200 miles, although
I
noted none within visible range. It made for some noisy DXing. There
must
have been a bit of auroral-zone extension since northerly TA's were at a
big
disadvantage compared to those from Spain, Morocco, and Algeria. The
best
signals were on the low end of the dial. Algeria-549 and Morocco-612
were
the two strongest TA's: both were virtually local-like. It would be
interesting to compare my DX observations with those from the active
European DXpeditions and any other US/Canadian loggings made at the
time.

COMMENTS

Now that was a great night/morning! The wether was darn near perfect and
the
little snow that was on the ground was great for dragging in toboggans
full
of equipment and wood for the stove. We managed to lay down 12 long
wires or
beverages in about 4 hours. Lots of walking on that farm field. Sore
legs
were the order of the day. But as you can see the DX was well worth
every
step. We weather permitting are planning a trip every 3-4 weeks. Only
disappointment was no TA's or TP's. Usually haul in a few this time of
year.
Oh well 7 new domestics will do just fine thanks. The Mexicans were in
big
time all over the place some of them dominating the frequency on several
wires at a time. Have to love it!!!

Please note both DX'ers names above. It wasn't just me

Mike Prindle - DXing from the East End of Long Island -
mechmike1@xxxxxxxx

By way of the AM DX Newsflash info I checked out 1700 to try and hear
WCMQ.
The signal was in here on Long Island, NY with a fair to good strength.
I
made a tape of my reception to send to the station but am unsure that I
have
the correct address. I haven't been doing much AM DXing in the past
couple
of years and don't have an up to date NRC log for the address. If you
could
help me with the address I would greatly appreciate it.

After listening to WCMQ I decided to tune done the band and much to my
suprise when I hit 1640 I heard KXBT with a fair signal, probably the
best
I've ever heard it. The signal was in from about 2250 to thier ID at
2300
and abruptly went down hill. It always gives me a thrill to hear a
station
from California on AM. I spent many Sunday mornings years ago to catch
KFI
and it finally payed off with one of my most prized AM QSLs.

Larry B. Godwin - lbg@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Dear DX Friends,

Wednesday evening 11/12/97 at 2303 EST, I heard a voice ID on the
mysterious
UnID station on 1620. It sounded like KUCE, and it appeared the man
said it
was "1620-AM at the University of ???." Just prior, there was an ad for
the
U.S. Navy. This is encouraging: now it is running voice inserts from
the
announcers.

Based on the directional bearings of Frank Aden in Boise (east of him),
Nigel Pimblett in AB (south of him) and myself in MT (south of me), I
believe the station might be in central or eastern Idaho, perhaps in
Pocatello, Twin Falls or Idaho Falls.

73, Larry

P.S. Nigel, I heard what I think was the same PSA for the predator
project,
too. I phoned the number given and found out they have mailed out
thousands
of tapes to stations all over the country.

(LBG-MT) = Larry B. Godwin, 2390 Clydes Dale Lane, Missoula, MT 59801.
E-mail address: lbg@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Receiver: Hammarlund HQ-150.
Antennas:
Sanserino air-core box loop + Kiwa loop.

regarding following message from Steve Whitt
<<I tried phoning KAXX 1020 as listed in NRC log but phone number is
someone's private no. Also the operator could not find a number for this
station. Is it on air? Does it carry 1on1 sports? Or does someone else
on
1020?>>

I currently have no 1 ON 1 outlet listed on 1020. The last Phone address
was
updated in the 17th edition, but obviously those aren't any good. I had
no
WRTH update from there mailing this year either, unless it fell through
a
tiny crack. I'll see what I can come up with.

M-Street Journal listed "KFFR" -1020 as going from weather to sports, im
May
97. I didn't get that updated in the 18th Edition release, must have
missed
it. However, contacting them could be difficult////

Sorry first message went out before I wanted it to! Trying to check:

http://www.fcc.gov/mmb/asd/seacall2.html

To see if licensee info would give us a clue, but fcc.gov was having
trouble
bringing up licensee info on KAXX or (old call KFFR) Have made notes and
will post to you and the AMNF if I track this one down...

Jerry Berg - jberg@xxxxxxxx

LOST AND FOUND. Dario Monferini in Italy advises that a friend of
his
who visited Venezuela in 1994 recently received a prepared card QSL from
R.
Carupano, Venezuela, 1110 kHz., which he heard while he was there. In
the
envelope was another prepared card for an unnamed DXer who reported
hearing
R. Carupano at 2315-2330 UTC on January 30, 1996. The prepared card has
the
marking "A Lion Brand Product" on the address side of the card. Dario's
friend would like to get this card in the hands of whomever it belongs
to.
If anyone sent the station a report for the above period, or knows who
did,
please contact me at jberg@xxxxxxxx and I will pass the word back.
