 CPC DX tests summary

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

Lynn Hollerman - gmholler@xxxxxxxxxx

PLEASE NOTE: Even if you don't hear a test, be sure and drop a card, letter,
or e-mail to the station personnel, thanking them for going to the trouble
to run a test!

Saturday, December 13, 1997 - KTFI-1270, Twin Falls, ID will conduct a DX
test at 5,000 watts nondirectional between 2:00 & 3:00 AM EST. The test
will include light rock/MOR music, voice announcements, test tones, and
morse code IDs. Reception reports may be sent to:

Mr. Bob Jackson
Announcer
KTFI-AM
606 Blue Lakes Road North
Twin Falls, ID 83301
E-Mail:bobj@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
WWW: http://www.impactradio.com/am1270/

(Note: KTFI requests an SASE be included with QSL requests. Add 2 IRCs for
overseas DXers)
(Arranged by J.D. Stephens.)

Also, if you hear a test, PLEASE, PLEASE let me know, via e-mail or the
newsgroup! And, if you send a reception report to a station, please remember
to include return postage with your report...

One final note...both IRCA and NRC are without CPC chairmen...without
someone to arrange the DX tests, there won't be many tests, only the few
that some members have been able to arrange! CPC chairman isn't a terribly
difficult or time consuming position; if you can volunteer, please, please,
PLEASE do!! (you can e-mail me for more info!)

KIKI AM 990 in Honolulu has switched from simulcasting their FM, I94, to a
new Country Western Format called "Hawaii's Country." Not too bad either,
much better than the "Hot New Young Country" type formats which are killing
CW stations across the country.

 INDIVIDUAL LOGGINGS

Alan Merriman - Chincoteague Island, VA - merriman@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Drake R8A, AOR AR7030 Plus, Sherwood SE-3, Timewave DSP-599zx, DL-2 Phasing
Unit, MWT-3S Regenerative Preselector, 4 150' slopers with noise reducing
xfmrs, 2' air core loop

Nov 23 0015z - the A-index jumps from 0 to 30! Lots of Spaniards on the low
end of the band below 800 kHz. Not particularly loud but domestics much
weaker than usual and many stns completely in the clear. RNE
558/567/576/585/603/621/639/684/729/738 all good, 774 extremely good, 855
weaker. Good Port on 594 but bothered by a buzz from 593 which may be my
neighbors computer. Senegal-765 strong. Usual "powerhouse" on 837 -
Canaries - very weak and above 855 mostly weak hets. By 0100z the band had
pretty well folded although 153/162/207 LW were all good. 2130z - A up to 47
- still Iberia booming - virtually every Spanish freq below 1100 showing but
the usual very good 1107/1125 just weak carriers. 2145 upper end of band now
showing life with many Spaniards, very loud Monete Carlo-1467, etc. 2245z
domestics now getting stronger and badly slopping some of the signals that
were completely in the clear. NOV 24 2115z - looks like we're starting out
just like last night. Spaniards strong but some others starting to show such
as strong signals from Saudi Arabia 1512/1521 but still nothing from
Northern Europe. Likely Egypt-819 strong but could find nothing in // -
definitely not Morocco. Strong carrier/puny western style audio on 828 for
a minute or so just before 2200z might be Bulgaria. Absolutely nothing on
827. Not real exciting but Azores-693 was like a local at 2135. I'm noting
hets at times on 792, 1053 (also noted by Mark) and 1215. 2320z A has
dropped back to 5 and not much of interest at the moment - maybe later.
NOV 25 didn't even turn the radio on. NOV 26 2215z - things seem kinda
blah. A few signals in but nothing of much interest. Most activity in the
center of the band with little at the bottom and top. Had meant to check
earlier tonight but was doing other things. Still not much showing outside
of Southwestern Europe/Northwestern Africa except possible Egypt-819.

 558 SPAIN/UNID RNE5 (3 stns) NOV 21 2350+ - good with instrumental music,
woman in SS. Heavy SAH from 2nd station but audio couldn't quite
       break through. [Merriman, VA]
 612 MOROCCO Sebaa-Aioun A, NOV 23 2315 - man in AA, good and //207.
       [Merriman-VA]
567 SPAIN RNE5 (3 stns) NOV 21 2355+ - listening to weather on Ireland and
this took over the freq for about 2 minutes with instrumental music,
       nice signal and //558. [Merriman-VA]
 603 SPAIN/UNID RNE5 (2 stns) NOV 23 0020+ - man/woman in SS, some music
and //558. Second station behind producing bits of audio probably
much needed Madeira but not enough. [Merriman-VA]
639 SPAIN RNE1 La Coruna +4, NOV 23 2131 - at least two men in SS, very
       loud and //648 etc. [Merriman-VA]
648 SPAIN RNE1 Badajoz, NOV 23 2126+ - two men in SS, possible play by
play, good and completely in the clear and //585. 2346 still good
with two men in SS, possible teletalk. [Merriman-VA]
657 SPAIN RNE5 Madrid, NOV 23 2219 - woman, brief music, man in SS, good
signal but badly slopped by WFAN, //1107. [Merriman-VA]
693 AZORES RDP Terceira NOV 23 2140 - romantic music, male vocal, loud and
all alone. 2349 - "Strangers In The Night" in EE, very loud and
       //837.  NOV 24 2135 - absolutely like a local with classical music
       and //837. [Merriman-VA]
711 WESTERN SAHARA Laayoune (El Aaoun) NOV 25 0126+ - AA music, good
signal and best heard so far this year. Again not // the Moroccan
stations and also not //1251 so not Libya. If I remember correctly
from 2 years ago this freq carries the Morocco A Program around
       0600z. [Merriman-VA]
747 CANARY IS RNE5 Las Palmas, Nov 23 0037 - good with romantic music and
//684 etc as RNE 1 & 5 were carrying same program. No sign of
       Holland. [Merriman-VA]
756 SPAIN R Euskadi, Bilbao NOV 24 2141 - man in SS, only fair signal but
       completely in the clear. [Merriman-VA]
765 SENEGAL Dakar Nov 23 0027+ - very loud with African/AA sounding music,
male singer, lots of drums. [Merriman-VA]
792 SPAIN SER Sevilla, NOV 23 2216 - two men in SS with what sounded like
teletalk, good and //873. This has been very regular this Fall with
a generally better signal than heard two years ago. [Merriman-VA]
801 SPAIN RNE1 (5 stns) NOV 23 2137 - two men in SS with what sounded like
play by play, easily split off from 800 and //many [Merriman-VA]
837 AZORES RDP Pico Da Barossa NOV 23 2349 - "Strangers In The Night" in
EE, very good but mixing with likely Canaries and //693. Wonder how
long they'll stay on frequency this time? [Merriman-VA]
864 SPAIN RNE1 Socuellamos NOV 23 2135 - two men in SS, all alone on the
       freq and //many. [Merriman-VA]
873 SPAIN COPE Zaragoza NOV 23 2210 - two men in SS, sounded like news,
2213 woman in SS, good and //1044. [Merriman-VA]
882 SPAIN COPE (4 stns) NOV 23 2213 - several men in SS, good, possible
       teletalk and //1134 etc. [Merriman-VA]
 936 SPAIN RNE5 (4 stns) NOV 23 2133 - man/woman in SS, sounded like news,
       very good. [Merriman-VA]
999 SPAIN COPE Madrid, NOV 23 2143 - man in SS, briefly very good and
       //1296. [Merriman-VA]
1026 SPAIN SER (6 stns) NOV 23 2321 - men in SS, possible teletalk, good
signal but badly slopped from both sides, seemed //1044.
       [Merriman-VA]
1044 MOROCCO Sebaa-Aioun C, NOV 23 2232 - way on top with man in Berber (?)
       music, Spain way behind. [Merriman-VA]
1053 MOROCCO Tanger A NOV 26 2235 - two men in AA, sounded like interview
and //207, 612. Strongest signal on the band. [Merriman-VA]
1098 SPAIN RNE5 (4 stns) NOV 23 2207 - man/woman in SS with what sounded
like news, //1107 which was very loud. No Slovakia. [Merriman-VA]
1134 SPAIN COPE (6 stns) NOV 23 2206 - man in SS, fair and //1143 which was
       weaker, not a trace of Croatia. [Merriman-VA}
1179 CANARY IS/SPAIN NOV 23 2153 - man in SS, briefly good, big fade and
back up 2158 with man in SS and music, mention of "noticias", several
pips just before the hour but fading so no ID. This is likely the
       Canaries. [Merriman-VA]
1215 SPAIN COPE (4 stns) NOV 23 2229 - two men in SS, sounded like tele-
talk, in the clear, no trace of Virgin Radio and //1134.
       [Merriman-VA]
1251 LIBYA Tripoli NOV 23 2245 - AA music, male vocal, loud. [Merriman-VA]
1287 SPAIN SER (3 stns) NOV 24 2125 - man in SS good for about a minute
likely this, no other SER stns in yet. [Merriman-VA]
1305 SPAIN RNE5 (4 stns) NOV 23 2151 - two men in SS, news or interview,
       good and //1107, 1314 etc. [Merriman-VA]
1314 SPAIN RNE5 (4 stns) NOV 23 2152 - two men in SS, fair and //1305 etc.
No sign of Norweigan monster. [Merriman-VA]
1422 UNID NOV 23 2224 - fairly strong carrier but no audio noted. With
conditions being the way they were this likely Algeria. [Merriman-VA]
1467 MONACO TWR Monte Carlo, NOV 24 2319 - EE religious program, loud.
       [Merriman-VA]
1485 SPAIN SER (3 stns) NOV 23 2243 - 2 men in SS, poor/fair, possible
       teletalk and //1044. [Merriman-VA]
1512 SAUDI ARABIA Holy Quran, Jeddah NOV 24 2129 - slow AA chant by a man,
fair/good and //11935. WRTH says this off at 2100 so looks like a
change. 1521 was absolutely booming. [Merriman-VA]
1544 ALGERIA (Clandestine) LVD Sahara NOV 23 2225 - loud with man in ?? and
       into AA sounding music. [Merriman-VA]

The following night bandscan was done using a Sony ICF-2010 receiver and
Quantum Loop. Receptions were on a family vacation trip to the Smuggler's
Notch resort near Jeffersonville, VT. The area is surrounded by mountainous
terrain and foreign DX is vastly inferior to that obtained at coastal sites
in eastern Massachusetts. The report below was done in a brief series of
scans without serious attempts to analyze "jumbled" channels. The only
evidence of Trans-Atlantic DX was a weak Libya-1251 het. Even St.
Pierre-1375 was barely audible.

1090 One of Jim Renfrew's unids in Vol 3 #35 was apparently KAAY. I did a
web search for "Attorney General Winston" on altavista
      (http://www.altavista.digital.com) which produced several references
to Arkansas. One was the web site operated by Arkansas Atty General
Winston Bryant (http://www.ag.state.ar.us/) and gave the 800 number
Jim heard. Also, 2259 UTC disappearance corresponds to November sunset
pattern/power change in Little Rock per IRCA sunrise/sunset maps.

Tim Hall - halls@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

(TRH-CA) Tim Hall. Chula Vista, CA ICF-2010, KIWA Loop
(TRH-CA1) Chasing TIS stations around San Diego county, Delco car rx

TIS & OTHER
-----------

530 (WNSB415) CA, South San Diego CalTrans station has been silent for
about a month, presumably the latest victim of XEBACH's killer
signal. Transmitter and signs are still in place, however. To
my knowledge, all 530 kHz TIS stations in SD County are now off
the air... but most (all?) still have their signs up.
             (TRH-CA1)
890 KPB792 CA, San Diego 12/3 1500 These are the correct calls for the
Cabrillo National Monument TIS, not KPB890 as the station used
to announce. The "890" was just a reference to their
frequency. They're giving correct IDs now. (TRH-CA)
1610 (WNDQ665) CA, Descanso-Cuyamaca State Park 11/28 1850 Station is
silent, and signs appear to have all been taken down.
             (TRH-CA1)
1610 KGB528? CA, Mt. Laguna (Cleveland National Forest) 11/28 1830
Tentative from car rx along CA-79 near Mt. Laguna turnoff.
Misc. camping-related info (availability of propane, etc.).
Didn't have time to drive closer to investigate. (TRH-CA1)
1610 WNPF405 CA, San Diego After months of silent periods and distorted
signals, this station is back and getting out better than ever.
Tape loop usually includes male and female voices, and is
             updated daily. (TRH-CA)
1610 TIS UT, Panguitch 12/4 0430 Noted this station fighting through
local WNUB568 and WNPF405 as well as some UNIDs. Good with
message that begins "Welcome to Bryce Canyon Country" and goes
on to mention Bryce Canyon NP, Grand Staircase-Escalante NM,
and most of all Scenic Byway 12 (which is a great scenic
drive). This station, which is a Garfield County Tourism Office
station in Panguitch, is what most of us across the Western US
and Canada are hearing, not KOP798 (KOP798 is the station at
Bryce Canyon NP; its message is mostly about park safety).
This station was silent in early September but they're sure
back now! Almost a pest now. (TRH-CA)
1610 TIS UNID, 12/4 0520 Who runs corny 60s-style "computer tones" at
the end of their tape loop? Couldn't pick out the station
mixing with WNUB568, WNPF405, and Panguitch. Yosemite station
seemed to be in briefly tonight as well. (TRH-CA)
1620 KNNN868 CA, Santa Ana 12/4 0415 Fair through local pests WPJ551 and
"KCR" (San Diego SU) with "... CalTrans travelers' information
station for Orange County... 1620 AM..." noted several times,
along with road conditions for Irvine area. New. (TRH-CA)
1700 (WRV829) CA, San Diego Station has not been noted for several months,
but signs are still up. If they do come back, they probably
won't be calling themselves "K-Murph" anymore, as "The Murph"
is now "The Q" (Qualcomm Stadium). (TRH-CA)

been a call change to coincide with the slogan change to "Radio
Lobo." Station gets out well, but at home I have too much slop
from XEMMM-800 and XEMO-860 to get a clean ID and power.
Station seems to ID regularly at the BOTTOM of each hour.

Werner Funkenhauser - funk@xxxxxxxxxxxx

I've just uploaded the newest WHAMLOG files based on information extracted
from the FCC's Western hemisphere AM Log, and its FM Frequency Engineering
database. The files are dated December 2/97 and reflect changes made to FCC
files during November. WHFM9711 consists of only FM changes and is 28,640
bytes long, while the AM changes file WHAM9711, is 15,049 bytes long.

New to my page is a link to Industry Canada's Spectrum Management page. I
intend to make AM/FM information from this source available in WHAMLOG
format also.
