December 14, 0510z - what is probably the new Argentine first discovered
by
the guys in Newfoundland and also heard by Larry Godwin in Montana is
being
heard right now. Lots of QSB but good signal on peaks riding up over
the
TIS's and dear old PCH. Man in Spanish, sounds religious, some periods
of
quiet instrumental music. Looked for this last night but not heard.
Now
playing vocal music. Go get'em before the USA X-band stations come on
and
make this a thing of the past.

ARGENTINA 1620 R Esmeralda, Buenos Aires. Several DXers have logged this
new
one. DX-friend Gabriel Ivan Barrera provides us with additional info:
Their
bcsts are in //with 100.3 Mhz "Cardinal". ID: "Desde Buenos Aires
transmite
FM 100.3 Cardinal en simultaneo con AM 1620 Esmeraldas". This is a new
stn
and has no relation with Radio Universo de Glew, also in Buenos Aires.
(This info per Argentinian DXer Norberto Pugliese). Also Argentinian
DXer
Marcelo Cornachioni informs us via GIB that Radio Esmeralda started
broadcasts from the beginning of Nov 1997 and that they have a rlg
programming format (Pentecostal) around the clock. QTH: Avda. San Juan
2461,
1232-Buenos Aires, Argentina. Telefono: 54-1-9411723. Tnx GIB!

Larry B. Godwin - Missoula, MT - lbg@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

1620 ARGENTINA, Buenos Aires tentatively logged 12/2/97 from 0337-0449
GMT
with religious programming. The signal was quite weak and faded out
entirely much of the time. Around 0337-0400 a man who sounded like a
preacher spoke in Spanish, and there was also the voice of a young boy
or a
woman. After 0400 there was a telephone talk show hosted by a man, and
around 0440, more preaching. In the NRC's 12/8/97 DX News, DXers in
Newfoundland heard an Argentine here in November with "soft-sell
religion
and phone-ins." It seemed to ID as Cardinal FM and often mentioned
Esmeraldas, a suburb of Buenos Aires. A tip relayed by Paul Ormandy
says
they ID as "Esperanza," too, and I may have taped this ID at 0341. Note
the
1997 WRTH lists a construction permit for a Buenos Aires station on this
frequency, licensed to the Universidad de Buenos Aires.
73, Larry
(LBG-MT) = Larry B. Godwin, 2390 Clydes Dale Lane, 59801.

Just had a phone call from Bill Harms over near Baltimore reporting a
pirate
on 1620 kHz. Station is 20 over here on the north sloper so probably up
in
the New York/New Jersey area somewhere. Playing Christmas music,
mixture of
religious and pop, "IDing" as "This is your AM radio test" between
selections. Very informative. With a signal like this it won't take
the
FCC long to shut this down.

**********

Dan Ferguson - df@xxxxxxxxxx

Was S8 & weak modulation here near Manassas, on an HF antenna. Went off
1746 GFMT.

**********

Alan Merriman - merriman@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Whoever this was they signed off at about 1746Z. Their signoff
announcement
was no more informative than their "IDs" during the program.
Speculation.
It has already been announced that there will be a Christmas Eve
broadcast
from a "offshore station" - could this possibly have been them testing?

Editorial Comment: Any radio station, legal or otherwise that would
play
"The Twelve Days of Christmas" and "The Little Drummer Boy" -
certifiably
the two most obnoxious Christmas songs ever written back to back
deserves
whatever it gets. FCC - please bust these turkeys quick!

Location: Wood Ridge, NJ, USA (about 14 miles WSW of NYC)
Equipment: Lowe HF-150/Kenwood R-5000 with SelectAntenna model 541M

These logs are from 12/12/97-12/14/97. I realize that many of these
stations
are easily heard, however my QTH is close to the Meadowlands where such
50KW
giants, such as 1010 WINS & others, have their transmitters located. So
its
a bit difficult for me to hear alot. I do consider a few of these to be
good
catches nonetheless. I'm anxiously awaiting a Kiwa amplified loop that I
have on order. I primarily used the HF-150, due to its selectable synch
detector, as it's a must have in my situation. I also used the
SelectAntenna, ok, I can hear the laughing!, but it does a fairly good
job
for me. The 541M model allows it to be directly connected to a receivers
antenna input terminals.

Paul Ormandy - paulorm@xxxxxxxx

In a QSL letter from Dimitrious (Jimmy) Siamoutas, Quality Control,
Regional
Engineering, CBC Montreal, he says the following stations are going to
FM:

CBM 940 Montreal - before Xmas '97, to 88.5mHz
CBF 690 Montreal - before Xmas '97, to 95.1mHz
CBJ 1580 Chicoutimi - during '98
CBV 980 Quebec City - during '98
CBL 740 Toronto - during '98, to 93.5mHz

And Jimmy comments "All these changes take place mainly in the name of
better quality and cost of operation, not to mention the real estate
considerations, since the AM radio requires considerable acreage for
ground
conductivity."

So it looks like I chose the right time to log CBM!
