 HOT STUFF

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

Kent Winrich - kwin@xxxxxxxxxx

Confirmation from WTDY that they WILL start testing on February 1, and
be full time by Feb 15.

The new transmitter is being installed as we speak.

Glenn Gardner the Operations manager left me a voice mail with the
above information and said that they would be most interested in
receiving reception reports. You can address your reports to him at:
WTDY
PO Box 2058
Madison, WI 53701

Just talked to the Operations Manager at WTDY (1480) Madison, WI. He
says they are still on track for an after midnight testing the 1670
facility starting Feb 1 and that he WILL let me know the exact schedule
as we get closer.

Please look on my web site http://www.execpc.com/~kwin/radio.html for
any updates of schedules.

He also mentioned that the 1670 will have the calls WTDY, and 1480 will
have the call WTDI.

Pat Martin - Seaside OR mwdxer@xxxxxxxxx

Apparently KPAM-860 is now on nights as on 1/22. The signal here on the
Northern Oregon coast is fair, buried mostly in the jumble. If this is
their signal, it wont be any problem here. They are supposed to be
directional to the SW with 5KW.

Pat Martin - Seaside OR - mwdxer@xxxxxxxxx

I had another good morning for TPs. Lots of 5KW commercial JJs in on
864 Khz, 765 Khz, 936 Khz. Taiwan-738 and 1143 were almost "local-like"
at times.

I heard an odd SE Asian type language again on 918 Khz, but still not
strong enough to ID. DZXL-558 was mixing with JOCR/ KOREA. The strong
cx seemed to just affect the bottom of the band, as by 1000 khz, the
signals dropped off alot.

CX seem to still be good even though it is Mid January. Really
different this year!

COMMENTS

What a great evening and morning. As you can see there were TIS's
coming out of the woodwork. The big surprise and a pleasant one at that
was the lack of the Anchor Lake MN TIS on 1610 that has become a huge
pest here. Two new countries and lots of new ones was very nice.

The walk to the DX bus about 1500 was a rough one. Due to fresh light
new snow the toboggans sank. This meant splitting loads and it took two
to move the sleds to the bus. Anyone who thinks this hobby is for wimps
should come out with us some time. After an hour of very tough going
all the equipment was unloaded set up and away we went DX'ing. About
two hours in my battery that powers the radio packed it in. Finally
died. Thankfully Wayne had a spare we use for the cell phone so we
could still keep both the ICOM and the Drake going.

As for the MFJ 1026 all I can say is BUY IT NOW!!! As you see above
the locals about 50-60 miles away and all beamed at us (almost all
Winnipeg stations beam North at night and Valhalla Beach is North of
Winnipeg) were nulled except CKY on 580. The MFJ is worth every cent
and once again a HUGE thanks to Mark Connelly for his modification
notes. This was easy to do and lets the signals flow in. It was amazing
to hear DX under even or over our locals while they were still on air.
If you BCB DX and have locals (all of ours are NSP) you need one of
these MFJ 1026 units.

The only disappointment was a lack of TP's and TA's save for the
Iceland station on 189. Oh well lots of good domestic DX made the walk
all worth while.

Great way to start 1998

My local 1570 WWCK Flint MI went off the air Monday morning 1/19. They
must have discovered they had weak mushy audio. Who knows if they
discovered their spur on 1680, which was heard in GA. This produced the
feeding frenzy below:

1570 WRJQ Appleton WI 1803 1/19 ID, "eastern Wisconsin", community
calendar, Polka mx. 1216 1/21 WRJQ, Fox Valley, Big Band

1570 WFLR Dundee NY 1900 1/19 heard C&W mx, and ID "-FLR".
1570 WFRL Freeport IL 2209 1/20 several clear WFRL ID's, mention of

1570 WMQA Minocqua WI 2200 1/20 "- area's Green Bay Packer station,
WMQA am & fm". Mention of FM 96, and Wisconsin. ID sounded
             like WNQA.
1570 WILO Frankfort IN 0201 1/21 "WILO", possible game between
             Trojans and Bulldogs.
1570 ?WQTW (t) Latrobe PA 0100-0200 1/20 "Sports Radio" " -, -burg"

The following logs are a compilation from 1/8-1/13. There are some
Trans-Atlantic catches and some new ones for me as well. As I've said
in a previous edition, my location is not ideally suited for MW DXing
due to my close proximity to a number of local powerhouse stations
located in the Meadowlands just to my south. But I'm still learning and
am able to catch a few good ones every now and then.

Logs: from 1/8/98 to 1/13/98

1/08 0508 UTC: 549 Khz: Algeria just above the noise with
WGR on 550 blasting in, male in AA, poor, ECSS mode.
1/09 0621 UTC: 1290 Khz: CJBK London, ON- ID followed by ads.
1/10 0400 UTC: 1320 Khz: CKEC New Glasgow, NS with news
on top of the hour, very strong.
1/10 0418 UTC: 1370 Khz: WFEA Manchester, NH assorted songs,
     very good then fade out.
1/12 0003 UTC: 1251 Khz: Libya, first noticed very strong het
with 1250 WMTR Morristown, NJ, went up to 1251 and heard
     male in AA, ECSS mode.
1/12 0009 UTC: 1314 Khz: NRK Norway booming in with S+9 signal
American songs- Eric Claption's "You look wonderful tonight"
     then male announcer.
1/13 0144 UTC 1215 Khz: "Virgin 1215", U.K. with "Are you
really going out with him...somethin' going on around
here". Followed by female announcer at 0155. Good at times.

I spoke to the CE at WCMQ-1700-FL today. He is flooded with reports
from all over the World, at least 50 plus. We will be answering the
reports within a month or so, as soon as he gets some QSLs printed up.
I hope this helps DXers that have reports out.

I just received a great QSL in todays mail. A beautiful certificate and
letter from Metra in Chicago, IL QSLing my taped report of their
Deerfield site. Call lerters are: WPGE863 oerating with only 9 watts!
With Staunton, VA and Channelview, TX I have now three TISs from a
great distance with 10 watts or less. I hope it is a while until the
band gets crowded with all the new EX stations! I also got a new
country QSL'd to day, Sweden-1179 with a FD QSL cqard.

Back in the Fall, I posted several inquiries regarding a mystery
station on 1090 kHz. with country music programming, slogans such as
"Boot Scootin' Party Weekend", "A Totally New Kind of Country", and
carrying Blair Garner's show "After Midnight".

2 "definite" identifications for this station were passed on to me as
WKTE, King, NC and KKYN, Plainview, TX.

I know that others have been trying to identify this mystery station,
and am happy to report that today I received a full data QSL letter
from KKYN stating that it was them that I heard. This in response to a
tentative report.

Incidentally, WKTE says it wasn't them, and that they are a Spanish
language station.

have my old records, and I want toconvert them to a computer log. I've
been endlessly searching for aWindows (or even DOS) BB logging software

looks great BUT doesn't allowyou to log below 160M (i.e. - BB. The
other program "Signal Surfer RadioLogger", isn't as detailed in entry

greatly appreciate where their are any demos, shareware orcommercial

I just spoke with Mr. Joe Blair of Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW)
International Airport. His office is responsible for operating the two
TIS's on 1640 and 1680 at the airport. He is very DXing aware. He said
that he has a stack of reception reports "two-feet high" and he answers
them on his own time. But he is busy and it may take a while to get to
them all. Without my asking, he mentioned receiving my own reception
report. By the way he spoke about this, I would suggest that DXers hold
off sending reports for a while. He also told me something interesting
about their operation. The station is operated by DFW and all airlines
could use its services. However, only American Airlines have chosen to
do so. The system is 100 percent automatic. A computer gets the flight
and gate information from a "federal" (I assume FAA) computer and
translates the information into voice. As a result, if there is a gate
or flight change, the information is automatically updated without
human intervention. He also noted that the stations are operating with
a waiver to operate with 60 watts because it would require upwards of
30 transmitters to cover the same area properly using 10 watt
transmitters. Finally, the current set of call letters WQO767 are for a
temporary permit, and the FCC WTB listed call letters of WPLR660 will
be used when they receive official authorization and his office updates
the appropriate .WAV file.
