Pat Martin - Seaside OR - mwdxer@xxxxxxxxx

I just got an E-Mail from Bill Harms informing me about the 5th X-Band
station on. WPHG-Atmore AL. As I am typing this it is coming in fair
with Gospel mx and so far one poor ID. The voice ID was weak, the music
fairly good. The time as I type this is about 0815 EST.

2/1 Station is still coming in (better now) at 0845 EST as I type this.
Station is 10 Day and 1 KW nights . Runs Gospel music Signed on a 6 AM
Saturday morning (EST). Has had calls from Chicago, New York, Seaside
Oregon, etc. Reports should be sent to:

WPHG
805 North Main Street
Atmore AL 36502.

Yes, the 5th X-Band station is now on the air. It is WPHG-1620-Atmore,
Alabama. If you hear them, therir phone number is 1-800-495-9495. They
want reports. They are very friendly. Their address is:

Apparently they turned off their WGYJ-1590 station 4 weeks ago . They
are only operarting WPHG for the moment. Soon they will have a new 100
KW FM at 90.9 Mhz. Their format is Southern Gospel with Rel.pgms too.

1620-WPHG-AL, Mobile. Still hrd here as late as 0830 EST 2/1.
Apparently the info the night time DJ gave me was wrong. They really
signed on at 0600 EST 2/1, not 1/31. According to Bill Harms, they had
been testing for the last few days.

Brett Saylor - State College PA - :bds2@xxxxxxx

1620 WPHG AL Atmore 1930 EST 2/1/98 "Celebration USA" program of
gospel top-20's, with PSA's and religious-oriented ads; partial
ID at 1958 ("WTH..." then dead air), but full ID at 2205: "This
is WTHG Atmore Alabama". Next morning at ~ 0735 EST heard ID "AM
Stereo, WPHG". Very strong but mixing with VA-area TIS which
makes it a mess at times; wonder if they are at full (10kw)
power? The FCC X-band listing has the call as "WGYC" but that's
definitely not what they gave over the air. (Saylor-PA)

Deep South receptions:

1560 WRHC FL Coral Gables 2222 EST 1/29/98 very good signal, over
WQEW-NY, TLK format in SP with discussions of Cuba and
Nicaragua. ID by M in SP sounded like "URAC" but believe this to
be them; format listed as ETH programming to Haitians
       (Saylor-PA)
1560 WAGL SC Lancaster 0732 EST 1/30/98 over/under WQEW-NY with
       ID and C&W music (Saylor-PA)
1570 WTLK NC Taylorsville 2321 EST 1/30/98 ID, C&W music, fair to
       poor (Saylor-PA)
1590 WVNA AL Tuscumbia 2307 EST 1/30/98 ID into TLK format, fair
       (Saylor-PA)
1600 WEUP AL Huntsville 2258 EST 1/30/98 ID up briefly from slop,
       mnt Alabama (Saylor-PA)

Canadian Goings-on:

990 CJAD PQ Montreal 2230 EST 2/1/98 ID as "Voice of the
Montreal Canadians, Newstalk Radio CJAD" at end of hockey game.
Another non-ID as "800 Radio in Montreal" then "You may be tuned
to 990 now, but you are listening to 800 Radio in Montreal", so
obviously still here due to ice storms earlier in the month

Hi everybody. I can pick up WPHG too, but 1620 around the NYC area is
like a graveyard pileup. FYI, WWRL, 1600 NYC is now AM Stereo with talk
mixed with a classic Motown/Soul format. Cuaght the last hour or two of
WJDM Elizabeth, NJ's Radio Aaahs format on 1660 last Friday night. They
pulled the plug about three minutes after 1am, just around midnight
Minneapolis time where the programs originated. They went to digital
noise and stayed that way until morning. Now they are broadcasting very
random pop albums and such just to kill time. The outfit that was set
to buy the Radio Aaahs O&Os pulled out of the deal, so now they are
just treading water. Happy ground hog day....Karl Zuk

WTDY 1670 update

Just got a call from the stations PR firm. They have pushed back the
testing of 1670 until at least March.

According to the CE (Contract Eng at KPAM they are using only 3 towers,
not the 4 that was reported. They protect most directions at night and
send their signal over Portland to the SW. The TX is located in
Orchards, WA (NE of Vancouver), co-located with KVAN-1550. There is a
mismatch as the one tower that KPAM added (Their omni single tower used
during the day w/50 KW), doesn't match the KVAN towers (two that are
used), as they are shorter. Again KPAM-860 has a very very poor signal
here on the Northern Coast at night, sometimes buried u/SLC. Other new
QSLs this week from KTZN-710-LA and CIBQ-1340-Brooks, Alberta.

Last night at 2000 EST, I heard WLMA-Greenwood, SC (1350
khz)...with very distorted and mudy audio on 1640 khz....Running Bruce
Williams and NBC talknet, got a couple of goo TOH IDs at both 2000 &
2100 hrs.
Distorted audio, sounded like a "spur" to me...Since its a weekend,
their engineers may not know about it yet, so you might want to check
it out this evening.
Signal here in FL was good, except hard to understand, due to the
distortion. Every now & then it would clear up and be readible.,

To all who were able to log WLMA ON 1/31 2/1

I spoke with WLMA engineer Ron Moore this morning. Problem was
caused by a capacitor in a tower tuning unit. It was replaced Sunday
afternoon. Looks like this was a "one shot" deal for DXers. Ron said
the frequency was 1644 khz.
Ron was very interested in getting reports and tapes if you have
them......
Address is WLMA 811 MONTAGUE AVE, SUITE A GREENWOOD, SC. Zip
is 29647

Please drop Ron a note if you were able to hear this "rare" signal.
I am sure a QSL will come your way !!!

During DXing from Cape Cod on Saturday 31 JAN, I noted a couple of
off-channel stations. Both were Latin Americans. One was on 870.38
kHz and the other was on 941 kHz. Audio extracted from the 870.38
station seemed to have advertising in Spanish (so probably not a
non-commercial Cuban).

Northern Africans and Spaniards were strong, little was noted from
northern Europe (UK, Norway, Germany, etc.)

Burkina Faso-747 was quite good just after local sunset, Senegal-765
was like a local, numerous Moroccans and Algerians were very good,
Mauritania-1349 was huge, bits of Angola-1088 made it in (stronger than
anything on 1089), and I had likely Gambia on 648. There was also
something Arabic-sounding (Libya or Saudi ?) blending in on 648.

High-band stations (France-1467, Italy-1332, Saudi Arabia-1521,
Algeria-1544) blasted in early (before 2300 UTC) but then became less
numerous.

Mika Makelainen - Vantaa, Finland - mtm@xxxxxxxxx

During a recent DXpedition I logged quite a few interesting Mexicans,
but unfortunately some remained unidentified. I would highly appreciate
any help concerning the following mysteries:

 780 AM - Nov. 29th 1997 at 1217-1227 UTC I heard a station with local
Christian programming. A male host praising the Lord and playing
Christian Mexican music. Several time checks placing it on the
Central time zone, but no ID. This would be very interesting, as
no Mexicans have ever been heard in Europe on this frequency.
1270 AM - Nov. 25th 1997 at 0803 UTC. I only got part of the slogan
"... musica, onda musica ...", which doesn't fit to any station.
Gave a Mexican PSA, so must be from Mexico anyway.
1470 AM - Nov. 29th at 1300 UTC. A brief time announcement "Las 6 en
punto" followed by the National Anthem. I guess XEACE Mazatlan SN
is the only possibility because I wasn't able to find other
stations located in the Mountain time zone? Provided that XECU
had already moved to 1450 by late November? Southeastern part of
Mexico is anyhow excluded, because it was in daylight.
1590 AM - Nov. 25th at 0914-0924 UTC. A station identifying as "Clube
1590 La Ranchera", with the emphasis on "Ranchera" strangely on
the last a. This could also be a Mexican-format station from the
      U.S., but still remains unresolved.

Bill Harms - Elkridge MD - wharms@xxxxxxxxx

670 BTW I did not hear the test of WVNS on 670. Just a strong WMAQ
and Spanish underneath. At one point I thought I heard a test
tone, but nothing else. This was 0000-0015 2/1. Maybe the test
was on later. (Harms - MD)
1620 WPHG? Another X-bander on the air! A male asking for phone calls
caught the number 1-800-49?-9495 and gospel music. Did not get a
good copy of the call letters yet, but did clearly hear "Atmore,
Alabama." 2/1 0650. Announcer noted that he had callers from
California, Florida, Chicago, Sherwood Park, New York, Indiana,
and Pennsylvania. Mentioned that today is the "first day of
operation." Guess previous reports were just test transmissions.
Another good channel for long distance TIS reception bites the
dust. Also ruins chances for Argentina. Get 'em while you can.
       (Harms - MD)
+Just called the station. The man on the phone said he would send
a letter commemorating the reception of the station. (Harms-MD)
1640-1650 WLMA SC, Greenwood. Yes, the frequency is correct. At first
I thought this was WPHG putting out a spur, but I heard an ID at
0800 2/1 for WLMA. Earlier I heard a series of local ads
including one that gave an 864 area code number. The spur this
station is putting out ruined the reception of stations on
       1640-1650. Nominal frequency is 1350 (Harms-MD)
