IRCA Mexican Log, 5th Edition
The IRCA is proud to announce the release of the 5th edition of its
MEXICAN LOG. The IRCA MEXICAN LOG log lists all AM stations in Mexico
by frequency, including call letters, state, city, day/night power,
slogans, schedule in UTC/GMT, formats, networks and notes. In
addition, stations that have changed frequency since 1996 are
cross-referenced on the old frequency. The call letter index gives
call, frequency, city and state. The city index (listed by state, then
city) includes frequency, call and day/night power. The log has been
completely updated from the 1996 edition and carefully cross-checked by
IRCA members in Mexico and the US. This is an indispensable reference
for anyone who hears Mexican radio stations. Size is 8 1/2" x 11" and
three hole punched for easy binding (optional).
Prices: IRCA/NRC members - $7.00 (US/Canada/Mexico/seamail), $8.00
(rest of the Americas airmail), $8.50 (Europe/Asia airmail), $9.00
(Australia/New Zealand airmail). Non-members: add $2.00 to the above
prices. Make checks out to: Phil Bytheway.
Order TODAY from: IRCA Bookstore, 9705 Mary NW, Seattle WA 98117-2334

The NRC's AM Radio Log is in need of some help with some conflicting
reports on format, networks and other information that is needed to
help keep it current Listed by State. If you can help, thanks! If you
can pass the question on to someone who can thanks also! Please DO NOT
use info from DX News or DX Monitor Through the 1st issue in March.
That's where most of the conflicts came from!
Many thanks for the help!

My mystery 1680 stations is back. Right now, it's 8:45 PM CST (0245
UTC), and they are playing Indian subcontinental music. Before that,
they played an album side of Creedence Clearwater's Greatest Hits.
Usual solid signal, no IDs or announcements of any kind.
This was recently logged by a DXer just outside Chicago, and has been
heard in Iowa, Oklahoma, and Connecticut. Looking at all the loggings,
this one is coming from somewhere in the Southeast U.S., and also
Southeast of my location (North Alabama).
Just turned on the radio Wednesday evening at 10:00 PM CST (0400 UTC),
and heard my longtime mystery station finally give an ID. They have
been playing more of the religious music with Indian subcintinental
instrumental backing, and heard several IDs of "Dog Radio...1680
kiloHertz. Thank you for listening to Dog Radio" by a male announcer
in a computerized voice. So, this is a pirate indeed.
1680 Dog Radio (Pirate). 3-12 2300-2330+ My mystery station which
I have been monitoring on this frequency for 2 weeks has finally
started identifying. They had been playing more of the religious music
with Indian subcontinental instrumental backing which has aired in
recent days, and I also heard several IDs of "Dog Radio...1680
kiloHertz. Thank you for listening to Dog Radio", sometimes over the
music, by a male announcer in a computerized voice. So, this is a
pirate indeed. This station has been noted in the past playing jazz,
classic rock & pop (Pink Floyd, Creedence Clearwater, Cream, etc.), and
the Indian-influenced music noted this evening. Some evenings they
play just one style, other nights they play selections from 2 or more
styles. Loops roughly E/SE of my QTH in North Alabama. (JS-AL)

*** COMMENTS ***
The mini-DXpedition to Granite Pier in Rockport, MA on the evening of
MAR 10 was not in the most comfortable weather (temperature -5 C / 23
F, high winds). Despite this, the nice run of auroral enhancement of
southerly DX made the listening session worth the effort.
*** TRANS-ATLANTIC DX ***

ID "This is the Voice of America - Washington, DC"; blasting
right through WSAI. [Connelly*R-MA]
1548 ALGERIA - CLANDESTINE, Tindouf, FEB 28 2340 - noted on this
channel (ex-1544) with SS talk that sounded like a political
speech. Very loud signal, totally trashing VOA Kuwait. This
station was heard subsequently on 1550 kHz. [Connelly*Y-MA]
1550 ALGERIA - CLANDESTINE, Tindouf, MAR 10 2325 - loud and clear with
typical AA/Berber music with drumming, string- plucking, and
shrill Delta-blues-like vocals. This was followed by an
Afro-pop style song having a sound similar to what influenced
Paul Simon's post-1985 stuff. The audio was, as usual, somewhat
bassy and mushy. This was alone on channel when I set up a
westward phase null against fairly- weak WRDM-CT. CBE-ON was
absent (due to aurora and the early time). Thanks to Dave Kenny
of BBCMS Caversham Park for alerting DXers to this via the
Hard-Core DX E-mail list. [Connelly*R-MA]
1619.5 NETHERLANDS, Scheveningen, PCH, FEB 28 2342 - "PCH" code ID;

555 ST. KITTS & NEVIS, ZIZ, Basseterre, MAR 1 0010 - Caribbean-EE
sports coverage; fair to good.
+ MAR 1 0033 - huge with a dancehall reggae / "gangsta" vocal that
used some of the old "Bonanza" TV theme .. I had to laugh.
[Connelly*Y-MA]
580 PUERTO RICO, WKAQ, San Juan, MAR 11 0117 - "todos noticias"
slogan, SS news; over jumble including CJFX & suspected
Venezuela. [Connelly*R-MA]
604.9 unID, MAR 1 0016 - carrier with rough AC growl and bits of
audio. [Connelly*Y-MA]
610 BRAZIL, maybe ZYL268, MAR 11 0113 - PP talk briefly over apparent
Colombia, Venezuela, & possible Trinidad-Tobago. WGIR
groundwave was phase-nulled to inaudibility. [Connelly*R-MA]
620 ANTIGUA, ABS, St. John's, MAR 11 0109 - BBC news & commentary;
mixed with WZON-ME groundwave. Heavy QRM from Canaries-621.
[Connelly*R-MA]
630 PUERTO RICO, WSKN, San Juan, MAR 11 0108 - Puerto Rico SS
newstalk; over CFCY & nulled WPRO. [Connelly*R-MA]
640 GUADELOUPE, RFO, Pointe-a-Pitre, MAR 11 0105 - FF talk by man;
excellent, well over likely YVQO (salsa music). [Connelly*R-MA]
650 COLOMBIA, RCN Antena Dos, HJKH, Bogota, MAR 1 0042 - SS sports
coverage mentioning several Colombian cities; absolute 'monster'
signal - as loud as anything from Boston or New York.
[Connelly*Y-MA]
+ MAR 11 0124 - SS Colombian sports promo.; excellent.
[Connelly*R-MA]
670 VENEZUELA, R. Rumbos, YVLL, Caracas, MAR 11 0127 - Venezuela
mentions, Rumbos doorbells; over others. [Connelly*R-MA]
672 unID, MAR 11 0131 - weak carrier. [Connelly*R-MA]
680 PUERTO RICO, WAPA, San Juan, MAR 11 0101 - Puerto Rico local news
in SS; strong, in phasing unit null of local WRKO.
[Connelly*R-MA]
705 ST. VINCENT & THE GRENADINES, Kingstown, MAR 11 0032 - mellow pop
vocal; fair.
+ MAR 11 0132 - to good peaks with "Tears in Heaven" by Eric
Clapton. [Connelly*R-MA]
720 VENEZUELA, YVQE, Porlamar, MAR 11 0052 - R. Oriente ID; atop
apparent Jamaica with CHTN in phaser null. [Connelly*R-MA]
732.6 unID, MAR 11 0048 - romantic-style SS vocal, distorted and
mushy with some FM'ing of the carrier (as noted with the
receiver's BFO on). This one surfaces from time to time
(probably the same station as I'd logged JAN 3 on 732.25 kHz).
I haven't seen it ID'ed yet. Florida DXers should be able to
solve this. [Connelly*R-MA]
760 COLOMBIA, RCN, HJAJ, Barranquilla, MAR 11 0008 - // 1000 with SS
sports; loud, atop other Latin Americans. [Connelly*R-MA]
750 VENEZUELA, YVKS, Caracas, MAR 11 0047 - Caracas mentions, SS
teletalk; dominant. [Connelly*R-MA]
760 GUYANA, R. Roraima, 8RG, Georgetown, MAR 11 0046 - Hindi male

man with evangelistic preaching; excellent, atop WCRN/YVLT.
[Connelly*R-MA]

briefly over a cluster of SS Latin Americans; CJBC eliminated by
aurora. [Connelly*R-MA]

[Connelly*R-MA]
1130 unID, MAR 11 0004 - slogan sounded like "La Voz del Oriente",
maybe a reference to the eastern part of Venezuela. The station
used two 3-note chime segments, the first similar to the old
"NBC" chimes, the other had the notes in a different order.
This was in an imbroglio of about 5 Latin Americans; WBBR was
barely noticeable in the stew. [Connelly*R-MA]

TRIO 9R59DS and a Kiwa loop antenna.
1701 R Al Shark, Melbourne. Heard here at 1135, this station runs 400
watts and from 500 miles away is extremely diffucult in this
direction NE about 15 degrees. 7/3 poor level. I believe that
NZers 1500 miles away here this better than us in Sydney.
Reported BNE station on this freq, but no heard at all. This
would be one of the last out of banders to air in Australia.
been on air since around May 97. Anyone heard the BNE station
lately on 1701?

You folks probably already know this but the FCC maintains an online AM
database at:
http://www.fcc.gov/mmb/asd/amq.html#sprung4
It will search by callsign, frequency, city/state and FCC file number.
Its real handy and very up to date.

Many of you know that my powerline noise has been getting worse the
past year or so. I haven't had much luck in getting the problem
repaired. The powerlines going South from where I live (where the noise
is coming from), runs through people's backyards. It isn't easy to get
a crew in there to check things out.
I decided to try a different angle. I ordered a JPS ANC-4 phaser from
Grove. I tryed one a few years ago on electric fence noise. It didn't
help on that. At the time there was a little powerline noise and I
remember it took it right out!
I didn't know if this would work or not, as the noise off my Northern
wire especially has been terrible. It runs fairly close to the
powerlines. I have lived at this location for 17 years. Until recently,
powerline noise was almost non-existent.
Anyway, I hooked the unit up using the built-in whip that comes with
it. It didn't do much. I then hooked up a 50n foot verticle I have in
the backyard for the noise antenna. With the unit, a noise antenna is
hooked up and your main antenna is also hooked up. You can phase out
your noise between the two antennas. I did have a little trouble with
the noise antenna overloading, so I ran the noise antenna through a
passive antenna tuner (Grove unit), and bang. It works like a charm. It
does take some fiddling around to get the nulls right, but it does work
great.
For the past year or so I have not been able to hear the little 500
watt KJTT-Oak Harbor, WA, 200 miles to the North on 1110 khz. Too much
powerline noise off the Northern Beverage. CFAX-1070-Victoria also has
mucho noise too, too listenable. That is untill now. As I type this I
have KJTT on the Drake R8 in the other room quite listenable. The null
is very very sharp to say the least, but it does the trick. If you have
alot of powerline noise, this is the ticket.
One thing I was really concerned about was the directivity of my
beverages. It most cases I can get the directivity I want with the
right adjustment. Not in all cases, but most of the time. Hey, it sure
made a difference here. Maybe someday they will find the trouble and
fix it. In the meantime, the Northern Beverage is back in business.
