(exactly) (NRC)
Monday, April 6, 1998 - KKSA-1260, San Angelo, TX 1:00-6:00 am EDT.
(NRC) (Re-schedule of its 3/16 test)
Also, if you hear a test, PLEASE, PLEASE let me know, via e-mail or the
newsgroup! And, if you send a reception report to a station, please

JD Stephens - jdstephens@xxxxxxxx
Received the following from the CE of KKSA. Note that the DX test has
been resked to Monday, April 6th between 1:00 and 6:00 AM Eastern time.
"I must apoligize, the Morse Code ID did not run. The person
responsible for entering it into the computer felt that it was not a
good time to run it due to some very severe weather they were having in
San Angelo over the weekend thinking it might confuse people and cause
alarm thinking it was weather related. The people in San Angelo are a
little gun shy when it comes to bad weather. They had a tornado rip
through the city a few years back. I have asked her to reschedule this
for the morning of April 6. Some other things you might have your
group listen for is "News, Talk, Sports K-SAY" or "1260 K-SAY". Again,
I am sorry they did not run on the 16th. I just found out about it
today. I have instructed the person responsible for setting it up in
the computer to let me know next time if it can't be run so I can
e-mail you ahead of time.
Sincerely,
Gary Smith
CE for KKSA San Angelo, Tx"

IRCA Mexican Log, 5th Edition
The IRCA is proud to announce the release of the 5th edition of its
MEXICAN LOG. The IRCA MEXICAN LOG log lists all AM stations in Mexico
by frequency, including call letters, state, city, day/night power,
slogans, schedule in UTC/GMT, formats, networks and notes. In
addition, stations that have changed frequency since 1996 are
cross-referenced on the old frequency. The call letter index gives
call, frequency, city and state. The city index (listed by state, then
city) includes frequency, call and day/night power. The log has been
completely updated from the 1996 edition and carefully cross-checked by
IRCA members in Mexico and the US. This is an indispensable reference
for anyone who hears Mexican radio stations. Size is 8 1/2" x 11" and
three hole punched for easy binding (optional).
Prices: IRCA/NRC members - $7.00 (US/Canada/Mexico/seamail), $8.00
(rest of the Americas airmail), $8.50 (Europe/Asia airmail), $9.00
(Australia/New Zealand airmail). Non-members: add $2.00 to the above
prices. Make checks out to: Phil Bytheway.

Round Two - NRC log helper.
Thanks to all who responded to my first post. If someone can e-mail me
a copy of that post, original file got accidentally deleted! All
replies receive credit in the 19th edition. Amateur Operators are
encouraged to list their call signs...
The NRC's AM Radio Log is in need of some help with some conflicting
reports on format, networks and other information that is needed to
help keep it current... Listed by State. If you can help, thanks! If you
can pass the question on to someone who can thanks also!

Mark Connelly - WA1ION@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
Summary of DX on 13 - 15 MAR 1998 - Mark Connelly
On Friday, I noted somewhat auroral conditions on the car radio as I
drove on a cold moonlit night heading down Route 3 through the long
stretch of pinelands in Plymouth north of the Sagamore Bridge and Cape
Cod Canal. Cubans seemed to be all over the lower part of the dial.
The TA hets were the predictable ones from Spain, Algeria, Morocco, and
the Canary Islands. A representative channel would be 620: Cuba
dominant and a fat het from Canaries-621. I reached Harwich around
10.30 p.m. local (0330 UTC: 14 MAR). One of the experiments I
conducted was the phasing of two broadband loops separated by about 43
m / 141 ft. At various times I had these oriented E-W and then N-S.
The spacing was along a line that was the same direction as how the two
loopheads were oriented. Phasing the loops worked out quite well.
Results were a bit better above 800 kHz than below: the ideal frequency
for the given spacing, a quarter wave, would be at 1744 kHz. On the
lower frequencies, there was somewhat more of a likelihood of nulling
forward (desired) and back (interfering) stations together. At 0358
UTC / 14 MAR, I started DXing in earnest. Right away 610 kHz proved
interesting with a nice "La Radiodifusora Nacional de Colombia ... la
voz del Amazonas" ID. Note that this is Uribia, not Bogota (RCN).
Right after that some Venezuelan ads popped up. This would be either
YVSE or YVXY. I looked for the Brazilian I'd noted in Rockport earlier
in the week, but no show this time. After 0400 there was some TA
action that was Spain- dominated: 999, 1044, 1107, 855, 1116, 1296,
774, 1305, 1359, 1413, 1521, 936, 684, and probably some others I
didn't write down. Also had Canaries - 1179 & 621, Libya - 1251,
Algeria - 891 & 981. In other words, the basic "big guns", excluding
northern Europeans that were "aurora'ed" out of the action. South
Americans got less numerous as the evening wore on (and domestics got
louder). Big Colombians on 700, 760, and 770 rolled in. In the
Caribbean, only the Cubans (several including parallel Progreso's on
640, 660, & 690) and St. Kitts on 555 made much of a show. (Big
boomers PJB-800 and R.V.C.-530 were car-radio copyable earlier, per
usual.) I called it quits at 0620 UTC. Some of the Spaniards
(especially 855) were still booting in good signals then.
On the afternoon of Saturday (14 MAR), I did a beach stop at Duxbury
Beach, MA on the way home. Bruce Conti had mentioned that he might be
over at Rowley at the same time (though his last set of logs indicated
that he may have opted for home-only operation). The Duxbury Beach
session ran from 2240 UTC (14 MAR) to 0020 UTC (15 MAR). When I
started, it was raining a bit, so I just ran two 27 m wires out on the
beach (one wire northeast, one southeast) and phased them. I didn't
notice a whole lot from Latin America, but the more-southerly Trans-
Atlantics weren't bad. In the log: Morocco-1044 (S9+30), Lesotho (over
Spain) -1197, Mauritania-1349 (loud!), France-1467, Saudi Arabia-1521
(huge), Vatican-1530, Spain-1584, Libya-1251, Canaries-1179,
Colombia-1170, Morocco-1053, Algeria-981, Cuba-890 (WBPS nulled),
Croatia (over Spain)-1134, Spain-1107 & 1071 (both huge), Spain-999,
Spain-954, Spain-918, Morocco-612 usual bulldozer signal, Egypt (over
Spain)-864, Canaries-837 & a het from presumed Azores-836, Morocco-819
(//612) with Egypt-819 just a bit under, Egypt-774 briefly over Spain,
Senegal-765 slightly over Switzerland, W. Sahara-711 loud - about equal
to WOR, UK-693 (in big mess with Azores, Spain, others), Spain-603.
More DX information and antenna experiments later.

560 WGAI NC Elizabeth City, 0118 3/15 - through mess with code,
presumed as I have not yet had time to translate the code from
the tape! (JR-NY)
670 WVNS VA Claremont, 0102 2/1 - heard with "All News 670" Ids and
mentions of NRC Test. WMAQ interference quite strong. (JR-NY)
****** SPECIAL
990 CJAD PQ Montreal, 0015 2/24 - noted with these calls during talk
program. (JR-NY)
****** TIS, ETC.
1630 HAR PA DOT HAR, 2317 3/18 - I am pretty sure there were THREE
stations here, the first IDing as "Pennsylvania Department of
Transportation Route 22 Highway Advisory Radio" with eastbound
traffic update in 16th Street exit area, the second IDing in
same way, but with westbound traffic update concerning a five
mile back-up at the Airport Road exit; and the third one IDing
as "Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Highway Advisory
Radio for the Lehigh Valley". The latter included a web-site:
www.22remove. Definitely two stations here, pretty sure about
the third. Weak interfence from Detroit TIS. (JR-NY) My map
shows an Airport Road exit in Allentown.
1640 UNID 0005 3/19 - continuous weather report mentioning Ohio
Valley, Great Lakes, PA, NJ and MD, finishing with mention of
Philadelphia and Allentown. No IDs noted, but strong enough to
rise above local mixing product on 1640. (JR-NY)
****** DX
1490 WIKE VT Newport, 0049 3/19 - quick ID in mess as "Stereo 1490
WIKE" during talk with listener. (JR-NY)
1490 WKNY NY Kingston, 0100 3/19 - Call letter ID just before CBS
News. (JR-NY)
1640 KDIA CA Vallejo, 0240 3/19 - Oldies show, 800 ads, calls
mentioned frequently. Heard on 1630 and 1640 with previous call
letters. Only possible with attenuation because of strong local
images here. 1650 station weak at best during this time, but
the best I've heard it! (JR-NY)

The Wisconsin State Journal, March 13, reports that the stations of WPR
will go NSP (24/7), tentatively beginning on April 6. The Ideas (talk)
network will carry the BBC World Service overnight, and the classical
stations will carry more classical music. In Madison this involves WHA
970 and WERN 88.7, as well as the Ideas network translator on 90.9.
On March 12 the same paper reported that Jonathan Little stepped down
as GM of WOLX 94.9, WYZN (sic; actually WYZM) 105.1, and WMMM-FM 105.5
on March 9.
