N R C ANNUAL CONVENTION
September 4-7, 1998
Best Western - Oak Hills
San Antonio, Texas

Hold onto your hats because this is going to be a big one! First of
all, there is no more receptive city in the world than San Antonio.
You think you will be going there for the radio conference, but when
you leave you will still be talking about the remarkable city sights,
the Alamo, sure! The Riverwalk? The restaurants? Six Flags over
Texas? Sea World? Tower of the Americas? It's endless!
And be sure to bring your radio! Imagine! DXing from a city you're
been trying to DX for years! Our host, Dale Hamm, has arranged a tour
of WOAI from 2 to 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon. Wouldn't it be a kick to
walk through the hallowed halls of one of Americas' last truly Clear
Channel operations?
    But wait, there's more!
If we start listing all the stations you can visit on this page,
you just know that one or more stations will be changing their call
signs to make us look foolish. So we'll just say, in a city with two
dozen radio stations you're going to be hard pressed to hear them all,
let alone visit the ones Dale will suggest we go see.
But the real fun? Of course. Meeting many of the DXrs you're
read about and who have become such familiar names in the hobby. Many
of them will have attended these conventions in the past and they'll be
able to help you figure out what's going on most of the time. Our
tried and true receptionist will keep you newcomers on track too. So
come on Friday if you possibly can and plan for a full day of
activities on Saturday and Sunday.
Sunday morning we'll have the annual radio station quiz .. and a
live taping of the "Travellog" .. a tour across the country with our
dial set to one a.m. frequency .. loads of fun. In between the
scheduled events, relax, meet and chat with others who share this
wonderful hobby. It's really a neat time for all of us.

HERE ARE THE DETAILS:

Hotel: Best Western - Oak Hills; 7401 Wurzbach Road, San Antonio, TX
78229. 1-800-468-3507: call them until 5 p.m. CentralTime. $52

to the Best Western. Many airlines serve San Antonio but South West
Air is offering NRC'ers 10% off; give them the special code number
S-0098 when you call 1-800-433-5368 on Monday through Friday for your
reservation.
Driving: San Antonio is at the junction of I-10 and I-35. I-410
is the beltway around the city. The hotel is in the northwest quadrant
of the city. Drive onto I-410 from I-10 or I-35 to the Babcock Street
exit, turn north on Babcock to Wurzbach Road. Turn right on Wurzbach
Road and the Best Western is the third building on your left.
The weekend program will start Friday p.m. and end Sunday p.m.
Saturday is for seeing the city and/or visiting the stations. Sunday
morning is the annual NRC quiz, a live taping for the DX Audio Service
and other goodies. Audience participation is expected!

Is anyone else hearing the weak OC on 1660 at night?. It seems to be
coming from the East. Very weak alot of the time. No audi as yet, I
wonder if KXOL is getting ready to come on from Utah.

Also, I received a phone call from Gary Jackson this evening mentioning
that heard some testing on 1630 and 1670 of late. I tryed here tonight,
nothing new there. Gary Jackson lives in Sacramento, CA.

1610 WPHF897 WA, South Bend 6/17 1703 "Heritage Highway TIS" with

Note: Grand Coulee Dam does not have any plans to add a TIS on AM.
They have an FM (89.9) that is used to deliver the music for their
nightly laser light show (10pm PLT Jun-Jul, 9:30pm Aug, 8:30pm Sep).

1610 stations in Seattle area appear to be gone, but hard to tell due
to massive slop from KRIZ-1620.

I just returned from a ten-day stay in Hawaii. While in Kauai, I tuned
the dial several evenings and came across a fairly strong station on
1400. From about 9:00 to 9:30 p.m. it sounded like they were running
English language lessons. Then they went into Oriental language
programming. Anyone know who this might be?

According to a QSL just received, the transmitter location for the
China Radio International's Russian broadcast on 1323kHz is "Xinjiang",
so presume this is the high-power station near Urumqui.
