5th Annual Madison WI DX GTG 8/22/98
Saturday, August 22, 1998, 1:00 p.m. until the last person leaves. Come
when you can and leave when you must.

Where: Bill Dvorak's house, 501 Algoma Street, Madison WI 53704-4812.

Activities: Good fellowship and lots of DX talk in an informal
atmosphere. Please feel free to bring any equipment, QSLs, station
souvenirs, log books, or anything else that you would like to show to
or share with the group. We encourage everyone to participate in a
group photo, so bring along your camera. We will be going out for
dinner in the early evening hours, and can either return to Bill's
house or plan some other activity afterwards. If you do plan to come in
the early evening, please call ahead so we can tell you where we will
be eating.
Refreshments: Snacks and soft drinks will be provded. If you prefer
another beverage, please feel free to bring your own.
Directions: Bill lives on Madison's East Side at the corner of
Algoma and Hoard Streets, one block from the intersection of East
Washington Avenue and East Johnson Street. The easiest way to get there
from East Washington is via Oak Street, one block east of the
Washington/Johnson intersection. Turn at the corner of Oak with the
Taco Bell on one side and the KFC on the other. Go north on Oak for one
block and turn left on Hoard for one block. His house is the brown
ranch on the near right corner.
Out-of-towners: East Washington Avenue is Highway 151, and can be
accessed from I90-94 at exit 135A, or from Hwy 30 just blocks from the
GTG. Bill will be glad to furnish a map upon request.
A word of caution about the Interstate: the junction of I90, I94
and Hwy 30 is undergoing extended upgrading. Lanes are closed on some
stretches of I90 from Hwys 12-18 north, and the intersection itself has
much construction activity. You can get through okay, but expect poorly
marked exits and traffic delays.
Accommodations: If anyone is thinking of staying over on Saturday
night, there are several good motels in the immediate area. Write or
call for information. Bill will gladly host you on a Madison tour on
Sunday, if you like.
Also, if you are either coming on Friday night or early on
Saturday, let us know, and we can arrange some early Saturday
activities.
Please RSVP. We would like to know for planning purposes how many
will attend. Contact Bill anytime up to the GTG day by any method
below:
Write to the above address. Telephone (608)244-5497 (if not at
home, leave a message on the answering machine). E-mail: DXERak@xxxxxxx
We hope you can make it. The Madison group of DXers looks forward
to seeing you here!

 HOT STUFF

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

Doug Smith W9WI - w9wi@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

A bunch of little cards showed up at work yesterday inviting people to
listen to "new" gospel music station WNSG-1240. This is a call and
format change for WKDA, which had been running CNN Headline News and
some local talk.

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

Eric Bueneman - N0UIHEric@xxxxxxx

Just a note to let you know that WIHM-1410 Taylorville, IL is now on
the air with EWTN Catholic-oriented programming for the Springfield
market. The station is owned by the same group (Covenant Network) that
owns WRYT-1080 Edwardsville, IL. The last three letters of the call
sign stand for "Immaculate Heart of Mary".

*-*-*

(St. Louis, MO) -- Missouri Sports Radio, LLC, the owners of KFNS-590,
is planning to purchase KZMM-100.7 Troy, MO. This purchase is contigent
on the owner of KZMM, James McGee, purchasing another station in the
area (the two likely targets are KFAV-99.9 Warrenton, MO, owned by
Kaspar Broadcasting of Missouri, and KIRL-1460 St. Charles, MO, owned
by Bronco Broadcasting Company).
KFNS plans to simulcast it's all-sports format (for the most part)
on 100.7, and change calls to KFNS-FM. The only times the two would
split would be when a St. Louis Rams game is aired (KSD-93.7 has the FM
rights) and when high school football is aired (KFNS plans to air St.
Louis area games on 590, and St. Charles area games on 100.7).
The purchase of 100.7 is meant to fill a gap in KFNS' coverage (the
590 signal is directional away from St. Charles, to protect WOW-590
Omaha, NE, at night).

*-*-*

1) WEMP-1250 Milwaukee, WI, after many years as an Oldies station (the
past several years getting the programming from Westwood One), has
become a Contemporary Christian station. The IDs are now promoting
"same call, brand new meaning".

2) WREN-1250 has officially moved from Topeka, KS to Kansas City, KS.
Their legal IDs clearly mention Kansas City, KS at the top of the hour.
They have fine-tuned their format to Urban Gospel, directly competing
with KPRT-1590 Kansas City, MO.

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

Robert Wien - rjwmail@xxxxxxxxx

According to M Street, and also the FCC database, KQPT-1470 Sacramento,
CA. has indeed changed their call letters to KOME. I tried checking
the station for top of hour ID at 6 AM on Tuesday 8/18 but only said
"Cruisin' 1470" as usual, will try and call them today to confirm this,
they had been KQPT on last check 8 days ago.

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

Theodore G. Hammond - thammond@xxxxxxxxxxx

As of August 19, 1998, WWCK(AM) 1570 is back on the air.

Here is an update on the WKNX, WJZZ, WCHB frequency shuffle and
upgrades. As you probably heard, WKNX, formerly 1210 kHz, now Bay
City, (Oldies) took over the vacated frequency of WXOX (1250) last
year, reworking the WKNX 3 tower dogleg array for 1250 kHz. WJZZ moved
to Kingsley, MI and is operating on 1210 kHz, skywave signal strength,
as well as a weak groundwave heard here would suggest they are
operating with 50 kW now. While it is supposed to be 2.5 kW during
critical hours, it is often hard to believe they reduce power when they
should. It has a "Smooth Jazz" type format. WCHB 1200 Taylor (Urban
Talk) has gone silent to reconstuct their directional antenna system.
When completed, it will be 50 kW daytime with 4 towers, and 15 kW
nighttime with 10 towers.

Larry Russell - Flushing MI - ak473@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

1570 WWCK Flint MI is back on air in parallel with the FM as usual.
They were off for several weeks; 2nd time this year. (Russell)

Dennis Gibson - dcgibson@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Sometimes it seems that certain call letters are reluctant to leave a
particular area, especially after a long run. And so it is with KTMS.
It didn't sit idle on the shelf for long. Jacor has picked them up for
990 in Santa Barbara, replacing KQSB. They were using them today; the
first time I noticed. I don't know when the change took place. It can't
have been too long ago; radiostation.com doesn't have it yet. Their
data comes directly from the Friendly Candy Company.

KBGG-1700... Heard here, too! MM 8/10 0137-0210 PDT on my ICF-7600.
Weak but steady signal, audio too muffled to get an official ID, but
heard 1-800 number given, callers, bumper/theme music. Certainly not
Miami! Odd cx at the time, and no sign of 'em since.

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

Pat Martin - Seaside OR - mwdxer@xxxxxxxxx

1640 KHZ, WHSH???, WI, SUSSEX, possibly the one way u/KDIA with OC at
0658 EDT. Then Female talking at 0700 EDT, followed by soft mx at 0706,
talking, but too much KDIA, and station too weak. On 8/26. This is the
first "real" signal I have heard from possible WHSH. Should beable to
log them when KDIA is off or EC CX get better. This is the only X Band
station I haven't heard to date. I have the other 13, and so far 11
QSL'd. Will keep trying. Tryed to phase with ANC4 using 1500' Eastern
Bev and Vertical and other antennas, but still bo luck. (PM-OR)

Mark Connelly - WA1ION@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

BOSTON-AREA SUMMER 1998 DX OUTINGS COMPENDIUM

There were two multi-operator medium-wave DXpeditions held in the area
this season ...

Granite Pier - Rockport, MA
Date: Wed. - 22 JUL 1998
Attendees: Aart Rouw <ARouw@xxxxxxxxxxx> (from Germany),
and Mark Connelly

Aart, a chemical engineer, was on a business trip to the New
England states and decided to join in a mini-DXpedition, US-style. He
and I parked out on the pier just before sundown. The site was
initially fairly crowded as a boat race was just ending. The weather
was uncommonly hot and humid and, until the wind picked up, there were
more insects about than are normally encountered at the seaside. Aart
figured he'd do better joining me at the Drake R8A in my car, rather
than trying to DX with a portable. When the roof-top antennas were all
set up, we were getting some decent signals from Europe that made Aart
think that he may have been listening from somewhere near his "home
turf". The UK Talk Radio stations on 1089 and 1053 popped up with good
audio, as did Virgin-1215. Germany on 1422 came through well, and a
weaker parallel signal was in there on 756. Aart recognized Dutch talk
from the Netherlands talk station on 1395. Stations from Spain were in
there with their typically strong signals on many frequencies. VOA
Kuwait on 1548 peaked at 0108 UTC / 9.08 p.m. local. Latin Americans
were pretty much a no-show; even the Caribbean splits and YVKS-750 were
unimpressive. Domestic-DX-wise, there were Newfoundlanders coming in
all over the dial, including some less-common ones like 1010 with
country music behind WINS.
When Aart got back to Germany, he wrote -

Dear Mark,
In the mean time I made it safely back to Germany. Thanks again for
your impressive demonstration of TA-DX from your sea side listening
post. I hope your mosquito bites have also healed already. These
creatures were certainly having a field day of their own with the two
of us in the car!

Receiver: Drake R8A. Antenna system for most logs: active whip and
broadband loop on car roof; phased with Superphaser-1 to get cardioid
pattern, usually nulling west. I also used a 100 m wire aimed
southeast, just in case it got auroral (it didn't). This wire was run
out over the marsh grass to the edge of the low- tide water. It's a
good thing that my insect repellent was working, because it got nasty
out there.

Heard some TA's that I'd logged in Plymouth last Friday (Virgin Radio,
etc.); also I noted Venezuela-1500 under WTOP, Colombia-1170 killing
WWVA, Venezuela-750 in the clear before getting covered by CBGY,
Venezuela-1080 under WTIC, Nevis-895, Anguilla-1505 in WNRB slop,
something in Arabic on 1566 (could be Iran, or one of the anti-Iraq
clandestines), and a few others I didn't write in the logbook. Notably
absent were Mauritania-1349 and Morocco-612 ... are these former
"blowtorches" now off the air ?

Full-data logs will be issued later in the month.

Everyone used Drake receivers. Bruce and Gary each had Beverage-length
wires running east. Gary also used a homebrew air loop. We all had a
good time.

Gary's report -gthorburn@xxxxxxxxxx

Last Wednesday night, I joined Bruce Conti and Mark Connelly on a
"DX Clams" outing, in search of Seafood and Trans-Atlantic MW DX.
You've probably read Mark Connelly's report. Now it's time to hear
from the junior member of the expedition.
We have all marvelled at the extensive and descriptive logs that
Mark turns in. If you are like me, you have fired up your receiver on
a good night at home and tried to hear some of this stuff. Perhaps
like me, you've been disappointed.
So over the past couple years, I eagerly joined some mini-
DXpeditions, to learn this obscure trade.
Three years ago Bruce, Mark, myself, Paul McDonough, Eric Cottrell
and maybe a couple others met at Hospital Hill in Rockport MA. With a
marginally adequate receiver, but a clearly inadequate antenna, I came
home with nothing more than about two Euro LW broadcasters in my log
below 1700 kHz.
They say admitting you need help is the first step. So a year ago,
armed with a new Drake R8A, I joined Mark & Bruce at the Rowley marsh
site, looking for some help. We strung out two long wires at right
angles across the marsh, and Mark tapped my R8A into a splitter which
followed his phasing and regen equipment. Think of it! Cable radio,
engineered by Mark Connelly. When Mark heard something interesting,
he'd shout the frequency and I'd scramble to tune it on my radio too,
before he detuned the regen and went looking for something else.
That trip taught me two things. First, that all those MW TA's are
really there, if you have a good site and good antennas. At home, 25
miles inland, I had heard hets on the more reliable TA frequencies.
But at the shore there are hets everywhere, and audio behind many of
them. Second, I learned that tuning a R8A to hear those signals, often
separated by only a kHz or two from a local station, requires listening
in sideband, with skillful use of narrow filters and the passband
control. Techniques that I used on shortwave to improve the
listenability of weak or QRM-ridden signals are essential on MW just to
hear them at all.
So a month ago I decided to get ready for another Rowley marsh
trip. I had built an amplified, tuned 2.5-foot box loop, fitted it to
the top of a tripod, and at Mark's suggestion, recently added a simple
varactor circuit so I could tune it remotely. I also had picked up a
big spool of wire at the last Deerchester flea. Away from the
electrical noise of my home I made a pre-expedition to my back yard.
No space for a really long wire, but the loop worked fine separating
out domestic stations. Still, the TA split frequencies offered only a
few quiet hets.
Which bring us to last Wednesday. Fortified with fried fish and
clams, in three vehicles we trekked out the lonely dirt track off Route
1A which ends at a parking lot on the edge of the Parker River National
Wildlife Sanctuary. It is a popular site with birders who binocularize
from the parking area out into the marsh, or walk further into it along
a due-east dirt road which ends at Nelson Island, the last clump of
trees before the marsh becomes the Parker River. This minor river
drains a few hills that the last glacier deprived of an outlet to the
nearby Merrimac. But it expands into a broad estuary between us and
Plum Island, probably the most northerly true barrier beach on the east
coast. The Parker River Sanctuary comprises much of the estuary and
Plum Island. Beyond Plum Island, the open Atlantic.
I parked facing east, and as the dusk settled I walked further
eastward down the dirt road into the humid gloom with a spool of 1000
feet of hamfest-grade wire. A technophobe heron took wing, and a few
kildeer relayed panic signals among themselves. I strung my wire along
the edge of the road, trying to keep it atop the marsh grass for a few
inches of height. The spool ran out about a third of the way to Nelson
Island, and I returned to the parking lot and set up my other antenna,
the amplified remotely tuned loop.
By this time, a few birders were returning from the dusky marsh to
their cars, and enquired about our activity. We explained as best we
could. Actually, there are many similarities between the two hobbies,
both birders and DXers share the urge to log rare catches, and
sometimes travel to remote spots with exotic equipment to do it.
Eager newbies in any activity are easily spotted, as they are
invariably grossly overequipped but underexperienced. I fit this
description to a tee. Having removed the center seat from the family
minivan, I set up a card table, a homey brass lamp retrofitted to
12-volt operation, prepared my travel coffee pot with ground French
Roast, and plugged it into the cigarette lighter. In the aura of a
cozy lamp and fresh coffee, I tidied my reference library on the rear
seat next to me, and placed the Drake at the center of the table. As
the cigarette lighter was busy with the java, I wired the Drake to a
second car battery, and fished two antenna wires and a remote tuning
control through a window. Now for a tape recorder, a few extra
C-cells, and a patch cable to R8A. Earlier I did some clandestine
grocery shopping, and cleverly hid the loot from my health-conscious
wife. From a bag marked "The Twinkie Outlet" I now produced some
unspeakably embarrassing treats. Bruce and Mark, of course, were
already deep into the DX, but did I ever have a set up!
Soon the hets came alive with audio, and I was hearing Trans-
Atlantic DX. I was thrilled to hear what Mark and Bruce find to be
ordinary logs. I nabbed one pretty clear signal and shouted to Mark,
"549, is that Algeria?". He responded yes, and I felt great for about
5 seconds. Then my bubble burst. I hear Mark saying to Bruce, "I
think there's something interesting on 549, but its getting totally
clobbered by that killer Algerian!"
Using an unterminated wire and a bi-directional loop, I wrestled
with more QRM off the back side of my antennas than did Mark with his
new phased broadband loop / whip combo which provides a cardioid
pattern. The signal level, and reduced QRM that he could produce just
blew away the best signal quality I could muster, using an identical
Drake receiver. And it all mounts on the top of a compact car, to boot.
I think there is a lot of future in this antenna, and I am looking
forward to when Mark can publish a complete description of the antennas
and associated electronics.
Still, I was quite pleased that my loop did as well as it did. I
compared it constantly with the 1000 ft wire, and in the range that it
tunes (about 400-1800 kHz) it was usually almost as good as the wire.
In particular, my simple amp, comprised of a MC1490 chip and about 3
non-critical discrete parts seems a quiet and effective way to match a
loop to a 50-ohm receiver, and I may make further use of it in another
antenna.
I made extensive use of the Drake notch filter to knock out
adjacent channel hets. Even if a het is only a secondary source of
QRM, the Drake notch is so effective, I find it well worthwhile to
employ it. How important this is probably varies from person to
person, depending on what kind of noise your ears can process.
My log book for the night shows a subset of about 70% of what Mark
already reported, so I won't replicate the MW logs here. But I also
did some LW listening on the long wire, and I will report that at the
end of this tale.
In conclusion, I would encourage each of you to look for an
opportunity to give a MW expedition a try. For me radio is ultimately
an aesthetic experience. If I were able to expound on that eloquently,
I think many of you would probably agree, especially if you were
fascinated by radio as a child. Remember those late nights, when your
parents thought you were sleeping? But alert and awake, by the warm
glow of tubes and a dial lamp, you were connected to distant fading
cities, enjoying favorite songs and perhaps a brownie smuggled earlier
from the kitchen.
Radio is still alive. My Wednesday evening ended late, behind a
glowing ersatz dial, enjoying half familiar British rock from Virgin
Radio on 1215, and the remains of an illicit sweet snack in the dark
night. Still a thrill for me. I thought about the other end of my
wire, invisible in a swamp, 1000 feet but transporting me thousands of
miles. It was time to go home. I shut down the radio and my ears
readjusted to the quiet marsh in front of me. I stepped out into the
dank air and followed the wire to the far end of my antenna.

In what has become a new tradition to greet the DX season, a few hardy
members of the Boston Area DXers (BADX) got together for dinner at the
Clam Box restaurant in Ipswich, MA, followed by a mini-DXpedition at
the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge in Rowley, MA. This year,
three of us braved the bugs at the salt marsh site; Mark Connelly, Gary
Thorburn, and myself. For the most part, it was a typical summer DX
session for that site, with Spain and northern Africa dominant on many
frequencies. But it was nice to hear the abundance of Trans-Atlantic
signals, even if they were just the usual. There was also an unusual
signal on 1680, perhaps a Boston area pirate with Spanish and English
religion and Indian-influenced music, very poor audio quality, and
using call letters that sounded like WLFW. Mark demonstrated some of
the new loop vs. whip cardioid technology. While veteran car DXers
Mark and I were satisfied with the minimal comforts of compact
vehicles, Gary took car DXing to the next level with a card table and
desk lamp setup in the back of his minivan, using a loop on a tripod in
the parking lot and a Beverage-length wire. We all had Drake R8/A
receivers. Assuming Mark will submit his typically thorough bandscan,
I've submitted some of the more interesting catches from DX Clams '98.

1314 NORWAY, NRK, Kvitsoy, AUG 16 0032 - man in Norwegian, then
light-pop '50s male EE vocal ("Beautiful Drop-out" or something
       like that); good. [Connelly*P-MA]
1341 NORTHERN IRELAND, BBC, Lisnagarvey, AUG 1 0242 - EE talk; poor,
       in slop.
+ AUG 17 0112 - BBC EE news by woman mentioning events in
       Colombia; good. [Connelly*P-MA]
1359 SPAIN, Arganda, AUG 1 0225 - man & woman in SS; fair through CKBC
       slop. [Connelly*P-MA]
1395 NETHERLANDS, Lopik, AUG 17 0110 - Dutch teletalk show with male
"talkmaster"; fair to good. Hearing this station only 2 miles /
3 km away from superlocal WPLM-1390 certainly shows what phasing
       can accomplish. [Connelly*P-MA]
1413 SPAIN, RNE5 synchros, AUG 17 0108 - SS talk; fair in CIGO slop.
       [Connelly*P-MA]
1422 ALGERIA, Algiers, AUG 17 0037 - thanks to some very quiet
passages in the classical music on the much-stronger German, I
was able to discern the AA vocal from this one in the
       background. [Connelly*P-MA]
1422 GERMANY, Deutschlandradio, Heusweiler, AUG 1 0127 - romantic
vocal with syrupy violins (like something from a 1940's movie),
then woman in GG; fair. [Connelly*P-MA]
     + AUG 6 0011 - classical music; to good peak. [Connelly*rw-MA]
1485  SPAIN, SER synchros, AUG 17 0046 - // 1044 with fast SS talk;
       fair. [Connelly*P-MA]
1503 IRAN, IRIB, Bushehr (t), AUG 17 0106 - this one probable with
flutes and Middle Eastern music; poor, in mix with others. There
were some very potent high-band signals coming in from the
Middle East at the time. [Connelly*P-MA]
1512 SAUDI ARABIA, BSKSA, Jeddah, AUG 1 0233 - AA vocal well atop an
apparent second station; tough WNRB slop at times.
+ AUG 17 0057 - a really HUGE signal here with Oud and other AA
strings, then a male vocal. This was blasting in so well that
anybody on the South Shore or the Cape trying to hear WNRB's
sportstalk was going to have a tough time of it. [Connelly*P-MA]
1521 SAUDI ARABIA, BSKSA, Duba, AUG 1 0300 - AA talk by man at
sign-on; excellent signal, annihilating WWKB. [Connelly*P-MA]
1530 VATICAN, R. Vaticana, AUG 1 0227 - Vatican interval signal music
repeated several times; huge signal, about 20 dB stronger than
WSAI or whatever else was under. At 0230, some Slavic-sounding
       talk was heard. [Connelly*P-MA]
1548 KUWAIT, VOA, Kuwait City, AUG 16 2345 - US EE talk about the US
Senate; strong, way over an unID music station. This and
Algeria-1550 were taking turns QRM'ing each other: TA's slopping
TA's at a North American receiving site !
+ AUG 17 0104 - VOA news about the deadly bombing in Omagh,
Northern Ireland. Signal was huge & local-like: I don't hear
that many Middle East SHORTWAVE stations this loud !
       [Connelly*P-MA]
1548 UNITED KINGDOM, AUG 1 0235 - at least two British stations were
battling it out here. One, presumably Bristol- Mangotsfield,
had BBC talk // 5975 and another station had music. I think
there may have been a teletalker in the jumble also.
       [Connelly*P-MA]
1550 ALGERIA - CLANDESTINE, Tindouf, AUG 5 2330 - AA talk; to very
       good peak. [Connelly*rw-MA]
     + AUG 16 2344 - AA talk; excellent, at least S9+20 dB.
       [Connelly*P-MA]
1559 unID (Middle East CLANDESTINE ?), AUG 17 0101 - a whopper of a 1
kHz heterodyne on WQEW and some thin AA-sounding audio. There
was also something coming in on 1557 (weak: sounded like opera).
On 1559 I'd heard what I think was the same AA station last
October at 0004 UTC. Does anyone have a location for this ?
       [Connelly*P-MA]
1575 SPAIN, SER synchros, AUG 16 2340 - SS talk & teletalk with slight
       echo; good. [Connelly*P-MA]
1584 CEUTA, RadiOle, AUG 17 0053 - SS pop-rock briefly broke over the
SER Spain station and some other jumbled stuff. [Connelly*P-MA]
1584 SPAIN, SER synchros, AUG 16 2346 - // 1575 with SS teletalk; to
fair peak through CBJ slop. [Connelly*P-MA]
1593 EGYPT, Matruh (t), AUG 17 0059 - probably this one with thin
AA-sounding vocal in and out of the slop. Iran is also listed
here, so this frequency needs some more work on a good Middle
       East night. [Connelly*P-MA]
1602 SPAIN, EI, Vitoria, AUG 1 0237 - non-SER program with woman in SS
interspersed with music segments; excellent. [Connelly*P-MA]
+ AUG 6 0006 - woman in SS, then pop music; fair through residual
       slop from phased WUNR. [Connelly*rw-MA]

*** PAN-AMERICAN DX ***

(Unfortunately I missed the aurora that happened a night or two after
the Rowley, MA "DX Clams" mini-DXpedition, so not much to report coming
up from the south.)

555 ST. KITTS & NEVIS, ZIZ, Basseterre, AUG 6 0156 - soft- voiced
woman in EE; poor to fair. [Connelly*rw-MA]
 670 VENEZUELA, R. Rumbos, YVLL, Caracas, AUG 6 0052 - slogan ID
"Radio Rumbos, la emisora de Venezuela"; over/under CKXB-NF C&W
       music. [Connelly*rw-MA]
 705 ST. VINCENT & THE GRENADINES, Kingstown, AUG 6 0132 - Caribbean
EE talk by man; poor to fair with WOR phased. [Connelly*rw-MA]
 880 VENEZUELA, Mundial, YVYM, Puerto Ordaz, AUG 6 0137 - "Mundial !"
ID blasted in; way over WCBS. [Connelly*rw-MA]
1160 BERMUDA, VSB3, Hamilton, AUG 6 0020 - BBC news about Brazil's
       involvement with organ transplants. [Connelly*rw-MA]

WLNG-1600

Can someone, anyone tell me for sure about this? A gentleman in the
circulation area of the NEWSDAY newspaper sent Ken Chatterton a copy of
the 1998 regulatory fee Public Notice showing where WLNG-AM was
assessed a $400 fee for 1998 and a copy of the entertainment schedule
from Newsday that shows a listing under AM Stations "WLNG-1600". He
insists it's an active station, however he has not stated that he's
heard it or given me any information regarding this. Back in March I
had e-mail with another gentleman with no name but an aol screen name
of Nonlisted1. Gave me the same "proof" that WLNG was on the air. The
proof is that it's listed in the Newsday news paper....

I checked my last FCC Data base dated 8/7/98 and there's no WLNG listed
there anymore. Anyway maybe you who have helped so much with the long
maybe someone can attest to the inaccuracy of the NEWSDAY listing.

Can Anyone lay this newspaper listing to rest????

Notice I've CC'd what I hope will get to the NEWSDAY editors

***

Paul Mount - Morganville NJ - prmount@xxxxxxxxxxx

WLNG-1600 was bought out by WWRL and taken off the air as part of
WWRL's expansion to 25,000 watts daytime and relaxing of their pattern.
This was part of the set of transactions that also took WERA-1590
Plainfield NJ off the air and kept Waterbury off from 1590 as well. I
researched this rather extensively (with regard to changes
proposed/made at WWRL) and can provide further details or perhaps a
Muse would be in order?

As for still being listed in the paper, most newspapers seem to only
enter changes when told by the stations, rather than regularly checking
each listed station to verify its accuracy. The NY Daily News seems to
be the exception to this rule, they are very up to date on call
changes.
