CPC Chairman (NRC)
Bill Hale - phantom2@xxxxxxxx
The KEYZ test scheduled for this morning (10/19) DID NOT GO OFF due to
the engineer getting the date mixed up. I received e-mail this morning
from him, apologizing, and asking that the test be rescheduled.
The KEYZ-660 test has been rescheduled for Monday, November 30 . . .
same details as before.
I talked with Mr. Gross (CE) today and he 'promised' to make up for his
boo-boo by hitting the daytime pattern for about 5 minutes. This will
shoot about 26000 watts ERP at 198 degrees for those of you in the
South Seas who need North Dakota, hi. Otherwise, the night pattern
(27000 watts ERP at 018 degrees) will be used.
PLEASE NOTE: Even if you don't hear a test, be sure and drop a card,
letter, or e-mail to the station personnel, thanking them for going to
the trouble to run a test!

HOT STUFF

Bill Harms - wharms@xxxxxxxxx
CBL 740 is scheduled to go off the air before the end of October. This
has been an easy bet for picking up this province on AM. So if you
haven't heard them yet, better do it before it is too late. They were
still on the air on 18 October.
Personally, I am sad to see them go. They are the easiest CBC outlet to
pick up here in Maryland, and their presence on the band will be
missed. I listen to them for hours on end. I wonder if the CBC folks
realize they have listeners in the USA.
***
I did not hear CBM-940 10/20 between 0530 and 0545. Although
conditions were on the auroral side CBL-740 and CBE-1550 were audible
at the same time. On 940 I heard a mix of R. Reloj Cuba, another Latin
(Puerto Rico?), Miami, and at least two other stations. In the past I
have noticed the same line up sans CBM, so not hearing CBM does not
mean that much. Can someone closer to CBM confirm that they are off
the air?
***
William C. Demmery - Ottawa, Ontario
Just spent a little time at the dials. Heavy auroral conditions here
in Ottawa, but I managed to survey the Toronto and Montreal CBC
outlets. Here's what I found:
- 690 CBF Montreal: SILENT.
- 740 CBL Toronto: Still on the air.
- 860 CJBC Toronto: Still on the air.
- 940 CBM Montreal: Still on the air.
Incidentally, in the midst of generally very poor reception conditions,
WOKV, Jacksonville, was thundering in on 690. Also numerous hets noted
in the lower part of the band.

I am hearing a station on 1680 playing rap music. Listened for an ID
at the TOH at 2000 ET 14 Oct 1998 but there was too much lightning
crash interference. I heard an OC earlier in the day at 1530 ET, so
suspect somewhere like New Jersey. Bill Harms - Elkridge, Maryland.

William C. Demmery - wdemmery@xxxxxxxxxxxx
Just a note to report a new station on 1680. Fair to good signal. The
format is hip-hop/rap/urban/whatever you want to call it. They're
running some sort of techno-jingle in between songs, but I can't make
any sense of it. Conditions here are a bit rough right now, with lots
of QRM from the next-door-neighbours' TV, plus thunderstorm static from
a nearby cold front. My loop bearing says somewhere due east or west.

Bill Harms - wharms@xxxxxxxxx
At 2037 10/14 I heard mentions of "hip hop", "Stereo 1680", and "Grand
Rapids." So my previous loggings is probably WBHD. DXer David Ross
Hamilton, Ontario, CANADA heard a firm ID of WBHD at the same time. We
were talking on the #swltalk EFNet IRC Channel.

Is anyone hearing the "Rap" station on 1680 khz this morning.? I am
hearing it as I type this. It has the "Pirate" sound, but it may be a
test on an X Bander, who knows? The signal is weak here. So far the
calls sound like a "W". Any help would be appreciated. It is def
Eastern, no heard off anything but the Eastern Beverage.
***
I got an ID of some sort. Rap music and IDs a "We're going to be your
number one station, 16-80 JAB" With nicely produced jingles. ut it
still sounds like a pirate. Anyone else hearing this? Fairly decent on
peaks.

KCJJ-1630 was in here 10/14 @ 0000 ET with a great signal and full

listening every ID I heard was different. The music was a mix of old

NOTE: All times are in UTC
Oct. 19 0146 UTC- Heard KCJJ- Iowa City, IA on 1630 kHz., with a
power-house signal. It was overriding a local mixing product of CBM
940 & CBF 690 which was quite an amazing feat.
Oct. 20- 0049 UTC- Heard WEAE- Pittsburgh, PA on 1250 kHz., IDing as
Sports Radio 12-50 WEAE, the former WTAE; mixing with several other
stations
Oct. 18 0130 UTC- Heard WBHD- Ada, MI on 1680 kHz. with annoying rap
loop test tape; difficult to ID announcements thanks to echo chamber
and squeaky voices; signal was fair
Oct. 20 0115 UTC- Heard CJBZ- Ottawa, ON on 1200 kHz. with Ottawa
Sports Radio IDs. Now all sports. Running lots of ads on Ottawa TV
station CJOH. Don't know if we'll ever hear call letters on this one
again
OTHER NEWS: The Montreal area continues to await a firm shutdown date
for the CBC outlets on 940 kHz. CBM, and 690 kHz. CBF. They were
supposed to close down in "Fall 1998", but we have been hearing some
rumours that coverage of the FM replacements has not been as good as
anticipated. There is also a story that the CBC French Network may be
applying to re-activate 690 kHz. with an all-news French language
station for the Montreal area. Supposedly if they are not able to get
690 kHz., they might ask for 940 kHz. If either were approved, this
might result in a relocation of the antenna, as it was announced that
CBC was selling the existing site in Brossard/Laprairie, Quebec. We
just have to wait and see.
That's all for this first submission. Hope it is the kind of stuff you
are looking for. Please check out our CIDX website; www.anarc.org/cidx/

"Sony says that you should get 48 hours listening to FM stereo and 40
hours listening to AM stereo out of the two AA batteries you have to
buy and install. There is no DC jack for a wall wart. The thing is
guaranteed for a year by Sony and the cost at Radio Shack was $29.99."
'I still want to know why my ICF-7600g can barely squeeze out 20 hours.
It's not like I'm running a cassette in there. And the proprietary AC
adapter is a $22 item, the cost of 120 alkaline batteries at Costco.
What's wrong with this picture, hi?'
"You are running LCDs and all kinds of processors. The 7600 has been
around for a long time. $22 for an adapter is pretty steep..."
Re: Ragnar's Optimus vs. SRIII...
The SRIII frequently goes on sale here (Seattle) for $39.95. I bought
one about two years ago, after being totally devoted to my SRII for six
years. The SRIII by comparison was a piece of crap. In addition to
being an ergonomic nightmare, it had birdies everywhere and just
generally sucked as a receiver. I returned it and got my money back.
So, if you know of somebody with an SRII in good shape they want to
sell, give 'em my address, wouldja?
As for the SRIII being made in China: This was a major issue for me,
because I do my best to boycott Chinese-made goods. (It's the human
rights thing, y'know.) I was surprised to find that the SRIII I bought
was NOT made in China, but Indonesia. I recall commenting at the time,
"Great -- you now have the choice between massacres in Tiananmen Square
or East Timor." The only way I can deal with it on a DX level is to
remember that even in China and East Timor there are DXers, and
sometimes they pick up more civilized countries.
"I understand in the early days of production the SRIII was total crap.
Apparently things have improved. I find mine the best AM BCB portable I
have ever used except for the dial calibration being totally and
completely worthless.
I'll bet the speaker wires were reversed. Something about having the
speaker wires reversed made the reception suck because of feedback in
the speaker feed wires."
The Indonesian models seemed to have terrible problems with quality
control.
I am NOT happy with president Clinton and his cozying up to the Chinese
but then again, I was very unhappy with Bush cozying up to the Chinese
and I was not happy with Reagan, Carter, Ford or Nixon buddying up to
them either.
Too bad there are no politicians with a balls or even a sack to carry
them in if they had any. Someone with sense would tell them, too bad,
if you don't leave people alone, we don't give you our money."
