 HOT STUFF

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

fybush@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Tuesday, October 20 was supposed to have been the last day for CBL 740,
but it's still up and running. (And to think I'd taken the day off
from work just so I could be standing next to the tower in Hornby
during its last moments...)

According to the nice folks at CBC Audience Relations in Toronto
(416-205-3311), the shutdown of 740 has been delayed for at least a few
months because they're still not reaching everyone they're supposed to
be on FM. Apparently, the signal from CBLA 99.1 Toronto isn't quite as
potent as expected, and only one of the two satellite stations
originally planned, CBLA-FM-2 89.1 Paris ON, has been built. The
other, CBLA-FM-1 90.5 Crystal Beach ON (along Lake Erie just west of
Buffalo), was heard testing briefly in August but has not been heard
since.

Personal research in September found many spots along highways 6 and 8
northwest of Hamilton where neither 89.1 nor 99.1 was acceptably
strong.

Once the change finally happens, we'll lose CBC Radio One in Rochester
completely. Not only is 99.1 unusable here because of local WBBF 98.9,
but the Peterborough CBCP transmitter will soon move from 93.5 (where
it can be heard in the slop around semi-local WQRV 93.3 Avon) to 98.7,
where it will be impossible. CBE 1550 is OK at night, usually, but
daytime will be a lot emptier.

As for Montreal, I'm not hearing CBF 690 here in Rochester (at 1845 ELT
10/22), and 940 is impossible here in the shadows of WEZO 950. One
rumor has CIQC 600 moving to 940 with English local talk, with 600
becoming an all-news station in both English and French operated by
sister stations CIQC and French- language CKVL 850. The 88.5
replacement for 940 is indeed terrible; many areas along the south
shore, east of Montreal, and the West Island (where many Anglophones
are concentrated) can barely hear the thing.

Finally...yes, I did still go up to Canada on Tuesday and ended up
seeing the Peterborough-area transmitters instead of mourning CBL.
Around 0030 on 10/20, the auroral activity kicked up big time, with the
usual Canadians on 540, 730, 900, and 940 replaced by XEWA, XEX, XEW,
and XEQ -- and this in a hotel room with nothing more than a barefoot
Sony 2003! I wish I'd brought the Drake.

Recent reports of this CBF's (690) demise are premature. They were
their normal loud self 10/25 all evening long and were audible at 0610
10/26.

CBM 940 is still on the air and as loud as ever at the same time as the
 above loggings.

I heard CBM last night and I think a trace of them this morning. But
conditions are quite auroral. 0600 EST 10/27

I've been hearing a new Radio Sport outlet on 1071 with very good
signals so e-mailed Radio Sport and found out that my guess of the
location being in South Canterbury was spot on... Timaru is about 70km
North of me. Note that Rhema's "Southern Star" outlet is now using the
same site as Radio Sport... that explains why the music I heard on 981
didn't fit with it's regular National Radio outlet in Northland!

1620-Auburn. I called KIHM-1590 (KSMH's sister station in Reno, per
the website), the lady told me they will "definitely" be on the 'the
first week of November, perhaps even Monday (11/2)'. So I finally got
a straight answer. They will apparently be simulcasting 1590
(Immaculate Heart Ministry, which is what KIHM's call letters mean).
KSMH's call letters mean "Sacramento's Most Holy"...

*** COMMENTS ***

The sunset listening session from Windmill Beach in South Yarmouth, MA
on Saturday, 24 OCT, brought in a bumper crop of Latin American DX and
a few Africans to boot. Europe north of Spain was generally absent, so
conditions had to be at least somewhat auroral.

*** TRANS-ATLANTIC DX ***

 549  ALGERIA  Les Trembles, OCT 24 2244 - AA male vocal & strings;
       good. [Connelly*Y-MA]
 585  SPAIN  RNE1, Madrid, OCT 24 2244 - // 621 with Bob Dylan songs;
       fair. [Connelly*Y-MA]
 621 CANARY ISLANDS // SPAIN RNE1 synchros, OCT 24 2124 - SS news and
commentary; increasing in strength, local-like a few minutes
       later. [Connelly*Y-MA]

       Man" by Bob Dylan. [Connelly*Y-MA]
 648  GAMBIA  Bonto, OCT 24 2242 - bits in African-accented EE talk;
       through slop from Latin Americans on 650. + OCT 24 2250 -
segment of African vocal, then talk that sounded like a public
       address; to good peak. [Connelly*Y-MA]
 684 SPAIN RNE1, Sevilla, OCT 24 2252 - // 621 with Bob Dylan songs
including a live version of "Like a Rolling Stone"; fair.
       [Connelly*Y-MA]
693 AZORES RDP, Santa Barbara, OCT 24 2241 - PP talk by woman, then
       high-energy dance music; good. [Connelly*Y-MA]
711.05 WESTERN SAHARA Laayoune, OCT 24 2350 - AA talk; through
       Cuba/WOR slop. [Connelly*Y-MA]
 747 BURKINA FASO Ouagadougou, OCT 24 2253 - // 4815 with
Jamaican-influenced dance club / rap music with electronic
effects; briefly over Canary Islands. [Connelly*Y-MA]
747 CANARY ISLANDS // SPAIN OCT 24 2255 - "Hotel California" by the
Eagles; fading up to cover Burkina Faso. [Connelly*Y-MA]
 765  SENEGAL  Dakar, OCT 24 2129 - kalimba, drums, and shrill vocal;
huge signal, much stronger than adjacent WABC-770.
       [Connelly*Y-MA]
 907.8 GAMBIA R. Syd, Banjul, OCT 24 2131 - drumming & vocal; poor.
Clearest copy was in LSB, 2.3 kHz bandwidth. [Connelly*Y-MA]
945 unID OCT 24 2316 - bits of talk; maybe Sao Tome or Angola here
(loop bearing and band conditions were consistent with a
       mid-African station). [Connelly*Y-MA]
 954 SPAIN R. Espana, Madrid, OCT 24 2316 - SS teletalk; fair.
       [Connelly*Y-MA]
981 ALGERIA Algiers, OCT 24 2226 - man in AA; to fair peak.
       [Connelly*Y-MA]

       SER-Spain. [Connelly*Y-MA]
1044 SPAIN SER synchros, OCT 24 2318 - SS talk by woman; mixed with
       Morocco. [Connelly*Y-MA]
1179 CANARY ISLANDS // SPAIN SER synchros, OCT 24 2133 - SS talk by
       man; fair to good. [Connelly*Y-MA]
1197 LESOTHO (t) BBC relay, Lancer's Gap, OCT 24 2209 - potent blank
carrier here on a bearing consistent with southern Africa.
Signal was pushing S9, but there were only hints of audio,
possibly from Spain or something else way under. Vashek Korinek
in South Africa sent Jean Burnell an E-mail about technical
problems with this station's audio. [Connelly*Y-MA]
1251 LIBYA Tripoli, OCT 25 0048 - emotional AA speech; good.
       [Connelly*Y-MA]
1286 SENEGAL Kaolack, OCT 24 2207 - probably this with muffled
FF-sounding talk; poor with a faint 1287 het (Spain ?).
       [Connelly*Y-MA]
1385.92 GUINEA Labe, OCT 24 2139 - African-accented FF talk by man,

1467 FRANCE TWR, Roumoules, OCT 24 2159-2200 - interval signal, then
       man in EE mentioned "1-4-6-7 kilohertz" and "another broadcast";
       fair. [Connelly*Y-MA]
1502.49 TOGO Radiodif. Togolaise, Kara, OCT 24 2149 - FF talk, into
start of vocal; to fair peak, but with a deep fade into the
       noise. [Connelly*Y-MA]
1521 SAUDI ARABIA BSKSA, Duba, OCT 24 2147 - man & woman in AA; very
fluttery fades. Given the auroral conditions, this was probably
the highest bearing path delivering usable signals. Another
signal was present, probably SER-Spain. [Connelly*Y-MA]
1550 ALGERIA RASD Clandestine, Tindouf, OCT 24 2145 - emotional
female AA vocal; mixing with, and then overriding, the Irish
music show on daytimer WNTN Newton, MA. [Connelly*Y-MA]

*** PAN-AMERICAN DX ***

Rico street addresses; under YVMJ. [Connelly*Y-MA]
580 VENEZUELA YVMJ, Maracaibo, OCT 25 0019 - upbeat SS dance music,

       [Connelly*Y-MA]
590 COLOMBIA HJCR, Medellin, OCT 25 0025 - SS speech with several
Colombia mentions; briefly surfacing through the "mix master" of
stations on the channel (Cuba, WEZE, VOCM, YV ?, etc.).
       [Connelly*Y-MA]
 590 unID (VENEZUELA ?) OCT 25 0015 - classical music; way over

Review of MFJ-1026 Phaser

Following numerous favourable reviews of the above unit, I was very
keen to lay my hands on one and when fellow NZ DXer Steven Greenyer
purchased one, I rang him to see what his opinion was. Steven was very
pleased with the possibilities the unit offered and his recommendation
was enough for me? now all I had to do was to save a little (more than
a little actually!) and I figured it would be a late Xmas present to
myself. However, Steven rang to tell me there was one available from a
deceased ham's estate, and it took me no more than a couple of seconds
to make up my mind! Many thanks to Steven for thinking of me (and to
Arthur Williams for tracking it down in the first place!).

US DXer Mark Connelly, had used one extensively and suggested several
modifications so after some another 'phone call to Steven and some
initial fiddling with the componentry, I set it up at home and was
pleased with some of the results I could obtain using relatively short
wires, i.e. one 25 metre horizontal and a 6.5 metre vertical. I could
phase out semi-local 4XO 1206 just 100km away to reveal Fiji and make a
significant hole in local Radio Waitaki 1395 allowing clear reception
of NZers on 1386 and 1404 ? with the phaser off they were both splashed
into oblivion! I was very keen to get to my Beverage site at
Waianakarua and see how it performed with longer wires and the
opportunity came over our Labour Weekend holiday.

When I arrived and set up the gear, I was almost in too much of a
hurry to connect up the phaser but quickly realised that I had all the
cables etc to hook it up ? that turned out to be a great idea! Now, I
bought this thing to phase out pests and even after Steven told me it
was great for enhancing signals by adding the signals from the two
aerials required (in this case two 310 metre Beverages, aimed at
Florida, one terminated and one unterminated), I didn't know how good I
it was for enhancing signals until I tuned in KCJJ 1630 and decided to
use the phaser to try and remove the CW from the Ohura aero beacon on
the same frequency. As soon as I switched the phaser on, and before I
thought about phasing out the beacon, I gained an immediate lift in
signal and the fact that both wires were directional towards the USA,
meant that I didn't need to phase the beacon as the resultant aerial
bearing was in the right direction for the desired station, and about
60 degrees off the pest.

So once KCJJ was firmly in the bag, it was time to experiment! Over and
over again I was amazed at how I could deal to a pest and clean up co
and side-band channels. I was initially sceptical at how well it would
work on skywave signals as past experience with the R-L-C type of
phasers had shown they worked well on groundwave but not too hot on the
former because of signal variation? to sum up just how well it worked
on skywave, not only was I able to get significant nulls on almost
every NZer tried, I was able to phase out KCCN 1420 in Hawaii and hear
a mainland US station running sports talk!

To sum up, If you're a serious MW DXer, have access to long wires or
Beverages and have contemplated buying something to give you an edge
(maybe even a new receiver), you have just got to have one of these!

Note: the modifications are necessary though anyone with some
experience with a soldering iron would find it relatively easy. Also,
there are two models, the MFJ-1025 and 1026, difference being that the
1026 comes with an active whip input which is probably not necessary,
my recommendation would be to save yourself a few dollars and get the
MFJ-1025. The latter is also easier to modify than the 1026 as it has
standard discrete components rather than the surface-mounted variety
used in it's "big brother".

Lastly, a big "thank you" to Mark Connelly for making the modifications
public and encouraging MW DXers to get into this unit. Anyone wanting
details of these mods could contact me or check out Mark's data at the
www.nordicdx.com web-site.

MFJ-956 Antenna Tuner Review

I recently picked up a new MFJ-956 SWL antenna tuner. It is a nice
little unit. I have not as of yet completely learned to use it but I
have found it useful to this point. As to whether it is completely
worth the money, well, the verdict is not yet in but it is looking like
a good buy.

The MFJ-956 is 4 inches long, 2 1/2 inches wide, and 1 1/2 inches tall.
It has two control knobs on the front, one for bandwidth markings for
Ground, Bypass, .15 -5 kHz, 5 kHz to 1.7 mHz, 1.7 mhz to 7 mHz, and 7
mHz to 30 mHz. The coverage of the unit is from 150 kHz to 30 mHz. The
other knob is for fine tuning of the bandwidth selected. The tuner has
two SO239 connectors in the rear, one for the antenna input and one
output to the receiver.

I have found the MFJ-956 tuner to have much more effect on the lower
two bands than above 7 mHz. The biggest effect is in the LW and MW
bands. That is good for those of us who are MW DXers. The tuner does
seem to have a little signal attenuation but it is not a huge amount.
This tuner will pretty much kill images created by powerhouse stations
in your area. It might be able to be used as a sort of rejection trap,
but I have not had the tuner long enough to see if it can be done. I
did use it on the shortwave bands when KCWW was on its 50 kW
directional signal beamed directly at my house and was able to blank
the image they were on in my set and pull out a shortwave station
underneath.

The set runs by an inductance/capacitance network with a 2.5 mH, 330
uH, 22 uH, and 1uH inductor [rf choke], and a 365 pF variable capacitor
to make it work. At the lower bands the tuner has very high Q but as
you change bands and inductors to the higher frequencies the Q is
increasingly wider.

The method of using the 956 tuner seems to be to place the switch in
the bypass position and tune your station. Then position the switch for
the band and tune the fine tuning knob until the desired amount of
tuning is reached. If you tune the set out of phase you can actually
make the images worse! When you tune the antenna correctly the images
are usually gone. If the image is too powerful, then the tuner will
help but will not get rid of the image completely. I also found that
the settings on the bandswitch are not accurate and you may need to
switch to another position higher or lower to get the correct position
for the band.

Overall the MFJ-956 tuner is pretty good, but I have really not had it
long enough to make up my mind on whether it is exactly what I am
looking for. At $39.95 it is not too pricey and is worth a try. It is a
nice tool for someone who wants to kill images to listen to a station
they couldn't hear without a tuner.

You can find these at the Ham Radio Outlet stores and directly from
MFJ.

IRCA Mexican Log, 5th Edition

The IRCA is proud to announce the release of the 5th edition of its
MEXICAN LOG. The IRCA MEXICAN LOG log lists all AM stations in Mexico
by frequency, including call letters, state, city, day/night power,
slogans, schedule in UTC/GMT, formats, networks and notes. In
addition, stations that have changed frequency since 1996 are
cross-referenced on the old frequency. The call letter index gives
call, frequency, city and state. The city index (listed by state, then
city) includes frequency, call and day/night power. The log has been
completely updated from the 1996 edition and carefully cross-checked by
IRCA members in Mexico and the US. This is an indispensable reference
for anyone who hears Mexican radio stations. Size is 8 1/2" x 11" and
three hole punched for easy binding (optional).

Prices: IRCA/NRC members - $7.00 (US/Canada/Mexico/seamail), $8.00
