KRLA/Los Angeles Gets Set For Talk Flip
The legendary CBS station will drop its Oldies programming and debut as
"L.A. Talk/1110 AM" on Nov. 30, going head-to-head on the AM band with
market-leading Cox Talker KFI and venerable ABC Talk station KABC. KRLA
& KLSX-FM OM Ron Escarsega will add KRLA PD duties; Jack Silver remains
KLSX's PD. After this format switch takes place, fully half of the
eight CBS-owned radio properties in America's second-largest market
will be non-music programmed. Besides Talkers KLSX and the new KRLA,
CBS also owns all-News outlets KFWB-AM and KNX-AM.

New KRLA Lineup Will Include L.A. Vet Michael Jackson
Jackson just last weekend announced his plans to leave crosstown KABC
after spending more than 30 years on the air at that station. KRLA &
KLSX GM Bob Moore tells R&R ONLINE, "Our move into Talk is the result
of an 18-month research and market study. As part of that study, we
asked radio listeners what was missing from the information and talk
arena on the AM dial in Los Angeles. Their No. 1 response was 'Michael
Jackson.' So we're going to give them Michael right where they want
him: Monday through Friday in his familiar 9am-noon timeslot." In a
press conference held today in L.A., the four-time Golden Mike
Award-winning Jackson promised his new daily show will offer L.A.'s
Talk radio fans "guests of high caliber and notoriety." Rounding out
KRLA's daytime talk lineup will be Westwood One's Imus In The Morning
(5-9am), who will segue from crosstown KLAC; Dr. Toni Grant (noon-3pm);
and WW1's G. Gordon Liddy Show (3-7pm). Depending on the sports season,
early evenings will feature play-by-play of either Kings hockey or
Angels baseball. "And when we aren't involved in either hockey or
baseball," says Moore, "7-10pm will be covered by Ron Barr's Sports
Byline USA." Late-nights will be a simulcast of KLSX's Ed Tyll Show
(10pm-1am).

KSMH-1620

Today's (11/17/98) Sacramento Bee's Broadcasting Column by Dan Vierria
has an item about KSMH, quoted verbatim:

"Catholic radio station KSMH (1620AM) is expected to be operating by
Jan. 1, according to General Manager Dave Vacheresse. The non-profit
station had set Nov. 1 as its launch date, but meeting FCC requirements
has taken longer than expected, he said. KSMH will be heard on the new
expanded band."

NOTE: Domestic reports are in EST (UTC-5), International reports are
in UTC (EST + 5)

Comment: Excellent auroral enhancement on 11/8, 9, 10, 11. Around
0530 on 11/8, it just rose up blew away domestics. Some interesting
international loggings resulted, as well as some lower powered stations
from Southern states. The night of 11/10-11 ranks as one of the best
auroral experiences I've ever had, with multiple stations to dig for on
nearly every frequency, what Mark Connelly calls "a feeding frenzy".
Definition of "Aurora": when you have to null the DX to get the
domestic station!

920 WCHR NJ Trenton, 11/8 0159 - first time heard with these calls,
at conclusion of religion program. [JR-NY]
990 CBW MB Winnipeg, 11/11 0359 - noted with CBC signature tune,
remarkable to hear anything this far north and west. No
sign of local WDCZ, two Spanish stations slugging it out
             here. [JR-NY]
1060 WLNO LA New Orleans, 11/9 1758 - power-down announcement
following religious program, mentioning 50,000 watts,
listeners in 4 state area, call letters. New with these
calls. KYW totally gone in auroral conditions. [JR-NY]
1070 WHYZ SC Sans Souci, 11/8 0158 - with "Personal Achievement
Radio" slogan, call letters, mention of Sans-Souci,
Greenville and several other cities in legal ID. Hard to
hear through two Colombian stations. Remarkable that no
other US/Canadian stations were heard during this time.
Heard again 11/9 1759 with ID after preacher. [JR-NY]
+with preacher, ID at 1759. No other stations heard here
             due to aurora. [JR-NY]
1550 WAZX GA Smyrna, 11/9 1724 - program in Spanish, mention of phone
number in 404 area code, call letters, powered down at
1730. Previously heard as WYNX. [JR-NY]
1570 WCLE TN Cleveland, 11/8 0230 - tentative, with ad for Southern
Gospel Hall of Fame, 423 area code which is Cleveland.
             [JR-NY]
1570 WSWV VA Pennington, 11/8 0235 - call letters, mention of 105.5
             FM. [JR-NY]
1580 WLIJ TN Shelbyville, 11/8 0230 - local ads, call letters.
             [JR-NY]
1580 UNID 11/9 1718z - occasionally strong signal in Spanish,
distinctly mentioning call letters "WCAB" (or similar)
(said "doble-U", not "doble-V"), also using "Cadena
Caracol" feed from Colombia (but I don't think it was from
a Colombian station). The signal stayed steady, even as
other daytimers were powering down at1730, 1745 and 1800.
I heard two mentions of "Radio Brava" and "La Isla". Is
this possibly Puerto Rico, or is it something in Florida?
Help! 11/10 1705-1755 - Caracol noted again with steady
signal, faded toward the end, Burger King and Coca Cola
ad, but no other local clues like previous night. It was
a straight Caracol news feed until 1745, then shifted to
music. I couldn't get Caracol 5078 kHz at the time to see
if it was in parallel. With all the other LA DX coming in
a litttle later, I'm now thinking this may be Colombia
after all. 11/11 1631 - Same station noted earlier in the
afternoon, ruling out international DX. I'm thinking that
maybe this is WPGC with new programming? Although I did
hear WPGC in English around 1500, maybe they do a Spanish
             program from 1630 onward? [JR-NY]

INTERNATIONAL

 550 VENEZUELA, Mundial, 11/10 0155z - popular music program,
       "Mundial" ID, very strong! [JR-NY]
560 COLOMBIA, Caracol, Maicao, 11/11 0157z - weak in mess with
Caracol ID, this is the only outlet listed in WRTH; new!
       [JR-NY]
 580 PUERTO RICO, WKAQ San Juan, 11/11 0826z - call-in show, call
       letters "WKAQ, somos noticias". [JR-NY]
 580 DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, R. Monti Cristi, 11/11 0859z - merengue music
program, slogan heard during break, heard last October, too.
       [JR-NY]
 630 PUERTO RICO, Super Kadena, 11/11 0840z - "Super Kadena" ID, UTC-4
timechecks; new since they changed to WSKN from WQBS. [JR-NY]
630 CUBA, R. Reloj, 11/11 0840 - usual program, weak under WSKN, not
listed in WRTH 97, thought there was a Cuban station here for
       many years. [JR-NY]
 650 COLOMBIA, RCN Antena 2, 11/11 0845 - mentions of Colombia, mixing
with music station, possibly Radio Universal, Santo Domingo.
       [JR-NY]
 690 COLOMBIA, R. Recuerdos, 11/11 0847z - local-like signal,
       nostalgia-type vocal music. [JR-NY]
 700 COLOMBIA, R. Net, Calm, 11/11 0850z - heard ID under what I
believe was Jamaica; first time heard since they changed from R.
       Sutatenza. [JR-NY]
 720 CUBA, R. Reloj, 11/11 0850z - weak, with code IDs. There is a
Radio Rebelde, Cienfuegos, shown here in WRTH 97. [JR-NY]
 780 VENEZUELA, R. Coro, Coro, 11/8 0603z - excellent signal, detailed
       R. Coro promotional announcements at this time, also mentioning
       FM, blasting WBBM. [JR-NY]
790 CUBA, R. Reloj, Pinar del Rio, 11/11 0852 - usual program, weak.
       [JR-NY]
810 PUERTO RICO, WKVM?, 11/10-11 2340-0903z - noted many times with
preaching, religious talk and music through the night, but never
an ID (although one mention of Santurce, a city in Puerto Rico).
At one point I left the tape running on this one, so I will have
       to review it. [JR-NY]
830 CUBA, R. Reloj, 11/8 0553z - weak under WXII (no WCCO at all),
with code IDs. Not shown in 1997 WRTH (although Cuban stations
have operated here in the past). [JR-NY]
 900 CUBA, R. Progreso, Cacocum, 11/11 0448z - while driving in car,
noted this one // 890, and stronger! Seemed to be sports
       coverage. [JR-NY]
 910 CUBA, R. Reloj (Bolondrsn listed), 11/8 0215z+ - Usual Reloj
program, with obvious code IDs breaking through interference,
quite strong and all alone at 0536. [JR-NY]
910 UNID, 11/8 0215z+ - Spanish vocals, no announcements noted at
0300, long fades. Hoping for Venezuela here. [JR-NY]
920 DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, HIBA, Santo Domingo, 11/10 0808 - all alone
on frequency with "AM" slogan, unusual guitar (or traditional
string instrument) music, mentions of Santo Domingo and
       Dominican Republic; new. [JR-NY]
 920.17 COLOMBIA, E. Fuentes, Cartagena, 11/8 0537z -presumed with
usual off-frequency signal, mention of Colombia and Cartagena.
Terry Krueger noted this same frequency in his report. [JR-NY]
 940 VENEZUELA, R. Punto Fijo, 11/8z 0340z - music program, ID, UTC-4
       timechecks, in CBM null. [JR-NY]
 980 COLOMBIA, RCN Calm, 11/11 0749z - clear parallel to RCN-1000,
       Spanish talk; new. [JR-NY]
 990 COLOMBIA, Medellmn, 11/11 0758z - clear parallel to 980 and 1000
RCN, Spanish talk, weak, new. Local WDCZ either off, or blown
away by aurora. A Spanish preaching program was heard on top of
       this one. [JR-NY]
1070 COLOMBIA, R. Santa Fi, 11/8 0625z - music program, lots of hets
and fades, single ID heard "Radio Santa Fi". [JR-NY]
1070 COLOMBIA, Emisora Atlantico, 11/8 0648z - this one is usually the
one noted on the high side of 1070, causing a strong het on
co-channel stations; heard with music program, "Emisora
Atlantico" IDs, and UTC-5 timechecks. Faded in and out of WHYZ.
       [JR-NY]
1120 CUBA?, 11/10 2340 - Same music program noted on 1120, 1130, 1140
and 1150, strongest by far on 1120. No ID on the hour, music
just kept going. Could be Radio Angzlo (1120, 1130) or Radio
       Bayamo (1140, 1150). [JR-NY]
1120 PUERTO RICO, 11/10 2359 - under 1120 unID above, I noted "WMSW"
call letters during Spanish talk programming. Previously heard
       as "WHSW". [JR-NY]
1570 UNID, 11/8 0733z - a Spanish language station appeared under
WCLE, for just a few moments, heard mention of Chihuahua, so
maybe Mexico? (probably a domestic station). [JR-NY]
