Just a reminder for those who QSL US stations that postage for domestic
mail raises from $0.32 to $0.33 on 10 January 1999. I am not sure how
International Rates are effected.
My apologies to those receiving duplicate messages, but I wanted to pass
along the following regarding an increase in International Rates. The
following is from the January issue of the "Short Takes" section of
"Counter Points" (a USPS publication for postmasters and clerks):
"The Postal Service is proposing to raise international rates by an
average of 3.3 percent on May 30 (1999). The last general increase for
international mail services was July 1995. In the air letter category
which makes up nearly 60 percent of total U.S. international volume,
Canada is the only country where higher rates are proposed. Air letters
to Canada would experience a five percent rate increase due to higher
delivery charges assessed by Canadian postal authorities."
Moving on a bit further in the section,
"An advance copy of the Domestic Mail Manual (DMM) containing rates,
fees and classification changes from this rate case is available to
customers and employees over the Internet at http://pe.usps.gov Simply
click on the 'What's New' button on the top right of the Postal Explorer

Monday, February 8, 1999 - KXTA-1150, Los Angeles, CA will broadcast
Morse Code IDs at 13 wpm at the top of each hour from 0400 to 0800 hours
Eastern Time. Because the KXTA studio feeds multiple transmitters, the
code will also be heard on KAVL-610 Lancaster, KLYF-850 Thousand Oaks
and KCKC-1350 San Bernardino, all California. They have an automated
system that triggers their IDs on command from Los Angeles. All
stations will air their separate, individual IDs at approximately :55
past the hour. KXTA has a Web Site that shows some photos of the
construction of their new 50 kW plant. Check it out at

The Ontario DX Association will be running a contest for Medium and
Longwave DXers during the month of February, 1999. It's called the 2
Down Challenge and anything "hearable" below 2 MHz is fair game. The
contest is open to ODXA members and non-members alike and I'm hoping you
would run the following promo for it in the AM-DX Newsflash until the
end of February.
THE ODXA 2-DOWN CHALLENGE #4
The ODXA 2-Down Challenge challenges you to hear stations that you just
can't hear on shortwave, covering the frequency spectrum from 2.0 MHz
down to DC (0.0 kHz) The range consists principally of the Long Wave
band (utilities, beacons and transatlantic broadcast stations - with
luck!), the AM Broadcast Band and the 160 metre ham band ("top band").
The first contest held February 1994 showed that there is interest in
the club covering these areas and that those who entered had a great
time doing it. It's been two years since the last Two-Down, so here's
the rules of this game:
Eligibility: All DXers, regardless of location. You need not be a
member of the ODXA to enter. However, there is an entry fee for
non-members. See below.
Monitoring Period: The UTC month of February, 1999.
Frequency Range: 0.0 kHz to 2000 kHz, inclusive. All modes of
transmission (e.g. AM, SSB, CW, Fax, RTTY....) are eligible.
Point Count: 1 point for each of the 12 Canadian Provinces & Territories
(max. 12 points); 1 point for each of the lower 48 States plus
Washington DC (max 49 points); 1 point for each radio station
transmitting from outside of the above two areas (no max). Unlike the
shortwave DX-Challenge, country of origin is not the basis of scoring.
A 'station' outside Canada and continental USA is defined as a
transmission that is unique in both transmitter location and frequency
(e.g. Radio Rebelde, Cuba, may transmit from both Santiago and Havana.
If heard with the same programming on their two different frequencies
these two 'stations' would count for 2 points). But a ham station may
not be logged more than once in the 160 meter band.
Entry Fee : Free for ODXA members, $5.00 Cdn for non-members. Cheques
payable to Ontario DX Association.
Prizes: Entrants will be divided into three groups, those from Ontario,
those from the rest of North America, and those from outside North
America. The winner in each category will be the person with the
greatest number of points, and will receive a current book from the ODXA
Mail Order or a gift certificate for same. All entrants will receive a
certificate.
All entrants and their point scores will be listed in an upcoming issue
of DX Ontario.
Entries: Include the following details in each log: UTC date & time,
station name/callsign, frequency and mode, language (if any), reception
quality, sufficient data to confirm postive identification of station
and location (location = transmitter site, not studio site). Do not
submit tentative logs or unidentifieds. Your point count should be
clearly listed.

Albert was correct on 1470 Sacramento, I heard a 'mis-ID'. True they
say "Gold Country 1470 Am, K-R-A-K", but I heard a legal ID last night
at 11 PM (1/5/99) as "Gold Country 93.7, KRAK Sacramento, 1470 AM,
KOME-AM, Sacramento". I hate FM simulcasts!!! FCC database also shows
them as KOME still. I suspect they may be planning on using KRAK calls
on AM sometime in the future but not right now... I already sent a
correction to Nancy also. 1690 CO. is still KADZ also as of last
night, assume 1550 is KDDZ.... I haven't checked 580/880 status yet,
but I did find in the FCC database where I can check for the latest call
changes that you list in the AM DX Newsflash, it's updatd about once a
month...

According to Robert Wiem who heard another ID from 1470 Sacramento. This
time they "did" ID as KOME & KRAK FM. So they still stand as KOME.

digging for Mexican stations (see below), but when I turned the
loop I caught the tail end of an English announcement mentioning
an address in San Ysidro, then into a long sermon, perhaps live
from a Sunday evening service somewhere. Is this some kind of
low power station in San Ysidro? I drove through the area during
the day, but heard nothing. My listening location was about a
mile from the border crossing area at San Ysidro. [JR*CA]

have a live recording of "Truckin'" in which Bob Weir says the
tune "went straight to the top of the charts in Turlock,
California; they love us and we love them for that" - wonder if

999.98 MEXICO UNID, 1/5 1255 - noted with talk, slightly
off-frequency, so I suspect it was not Radio Mil. [JR*CA]
1100 MEXICO XENAS Navajoa, SIN - this one drove me crazy every night,
with a great selection of ranchera and other music, usually equal
to or better than KFAX, but the IDs were full of electronic
sound effects and low voices, making it difficult to get many
clues about calls, slogan or location. Must be in the northwest
part of the country because it was so strong through the night,
every night. Some of the things heard: "XE-Nen", "Musica
Norteqa", "BCV (or VCV)", "Radio Noventinueve" (99), "La Tremeda"
and "Super XEM". I also heard the national anthem one night
beginning at 0658. I suppose this is probably XENAS, based on
reports in IDXD from last season. [JR*CA]
1110 MEXICO XERED DF Mexico City, 1/4 0410 - with "La Hora Nacional"
talk and features, very strong at times over KRLA and KFAB. This
is a national program on Sunday evenings, noted parallel to
XEKAM-950 (but nothing else - I thought it was required of all
stations!). After 0500 I heard a blend of pop/techno music, and
later at 0702 the National Anthem (midnight in Mexico City), so I
am guessing that this is XERED. I heard several phrases that
might have included "Radio Red", but this may be wishful thinking
(and I did not have a tape recorder). [JR*CA]
1200 MEXICO XEWT Sin Culiacan, 1/4 0544 - nice "WT" ID heard in huge
mess, with at least one other Mexican station, and possibly a TIS
station (see above). Slogans heard in this mess, which might
have been from either Mexican were "Radio Formula". "Radio Uno"

1390 MEXICO XEKT BN Tecate, 1/2 1600 - noted with music program and
call letter ID, previously logged on 1380. [JR*CA]
I have now heard over 400 stations from San Diego over the course 14
years on my annual visits (about half the time at Christmas, the other
half during the summer).
By the way, for the first time in quite a while my carry-on luggage
(which included the Drake R-8 and Radio West Loop in a computer case),
was checked very thoroughly. I had to demonstrate the entire operation
to the security personnel at the San Diego airport.

RADIO MATURIN, 5040 and 1.180 khz. I send a reception reports via fax
two days ago addressed to Sr. Alonso Hurtado actual station director in
order to help 3 dxers from Australia, Finland and U.S.A. and he inform
me that he had received those report before but the details are not
enough to demonstrate the report veracity. Personaly I think for
europeans and americam dxers is dificult to send a detailed report if
they do not spanish language. This station had many years ago a qsl-card
that was sent to Bjorn Olsson in Sweden (?) and was published in a
COMNUNICATION in U.K., I have a pothocopy. But Sr. Alonso Hurtado told
me it does not exist any more and when he answer correct report he do it
with a QSL-Letter. I recomend if you have a tape recording with a
YV-report get in touch with a dxers that speak spanish and can traslate
for detailed report, specially mention the station identification, names
of speakers and operator, and advertising. Format used by Henrik Klemetz
and Rafael Rodriguez in Santa Fe de Bog.

I was very impressed by your QSL statistics published by you few days
ago, you are a very experienced MW DXer! Now when the new year started,
I recalled my 2 years old log, made in northern Denmark in DEC 31,1996 /
JAN 1,1997 and I got an idea to write you about it. Maybe you can help
with this yet unsolved mystery.
On DEC 31, 1996 (at around 0700 UTC) I heard a mixture of TA stations on
680 kHz, they were CJOB, CFTR, WRKO and maybe some more. There was a
station playing something like a "Jazz Party" (I think I heard them
saying these words during the program), which was a life broadcast with
a big band orchestra and some singers. I was watching this frequency
from 0701 UTC. CJOB played Kenny Rogers and the similar stuff, CFTR had
continuous news. WRKO-ID heard once only in the mixture (format not
recognized). Jazz faded in and out, no ID. Then, just before 0800 UTC,
there was jazz fading in again and at 0800 UTC there was a countdown for
a New Year. Audience applauded and the orchestra started to play one
very well known melody (a title?). Unfortunately after ca. 1 minute the
station faded out again and never came in the same quality.
Later, at 0840, I heard XERF 1570 and CJVB 1470 at 0900. Other stations
during that morning (UTC) were CHQR 770, CFXL 1140, CFSL 1190, CJME
1300, KGA 1510, CFUN 1410.
So - which station has been celebrating the New Year at 0800 UTC? Is it
possible that it was a syndicated relay? Is it usual that syndicated
networks are relayed including, for example, New Year4s celebrations on
the west coast to the east coast listeners?
Maybe you cannot say the name of the station, but it would be enough for
me to know what is the practice in your country (and maybe in Canada
too).

If he heard them say happy new year right at 0800 UTC then I would
guess it would be a Pacific time zone station, since 0800 UTC is
midnight PST. The only PST zone station I see on 680 is KNBR. I dont
know if they would change from sports talk to do a new years eve show or
not. Maybe it was the Barrow, AK station, even though it would have been
11 PM there.
The only other PST zone station on 680 are daytime only, and pretty
low power but maybe one of them was on at midnight.
Its really hard to tell if a station on the east coast would
broadcast another happy new year at say 2 AM there time, I dont think
they would. I would say that if they were counting down and then saying
happy new year that it would be in the time zone where the new year was
occuring. Or maybe a station to the west might such as Alaska.

What is the mystery station from the Far East on 1467,25 kHz? This
station is heard here in Scandinavia at 1830-1957UTC when Monte Carlo is
off the air. Heard Jan 11 and Jan 12. Stn sounds like Thai or
Indonesian but it is not the Thai educational stn on 1467 kHz, sounds
more like private stn.
