DX Tests for 3/8/99

550 KTSA - - - I talked with Mr. Dietrich this morning and he said
unforseen circumstances which only arose Thursday, 3/4, makes it
impossible to test Monday morning. He said 'Let's tentatively go
     with 3/22, same schedule.'
BUT . . . KTSA will be OFF THE AIR from Midnight CST to ??? on 3/8/99
as the power company was doing some re-wiring in the area, so they
would be off altogether. So for those of you who consider KTSA a
'pest', here's your chance at 550. That's the reason for the test
     to be rescheduled.

As far as KIML-1270 . . . Wyoming received a harsh winter storm over the
past 24 hours, making even the Interstates impassable. Mr.
Swiderski said (this morning) he would try to make it there (he
lives 60 miles away) Saturday to get the computer all ready to go
for Monday morning. If the test doesn't go 3/8, I will try to
     reschedule.

   *  3/??/99 ALL - Top of Hour - 1660 - WQSN - Kalamazoo MI (IRCA)
      3/15/99 Mon - 0101-0145 - 1390 - WHMA - Wnniston AL (NRC)
      3/15/99 Mon - 0200-0700 - 1250 - KNEU - Roosevelt UT (NRC)
      3/15/99 Mon - 0500-0600 - 1020 - KJJK - Fergus Falls MN (NRC)
   *  3/22/99 Mon - 0100-0300 -  550 - KTSA - San Antonio TX (NRC)

(ELT = Eastern Listening Time, i.e. the local time in the Eastern time
zone). Please remember, what's listed as being on, say, Monday *may* be
what you think of as Sunday night! * = new since last time.

DETAILS:

morning, March 15th, 1999 from 0500 to 0600 Eastern Time. KJJK will NOT
be operating with on their 2000 watts non-directional, as their initial
confirmation indicated. I have spoken to Mr. Swedberg of KJJK, and he
said they would be operating with their 370 watt night power,
directional only. The night pattern has two major lobes: 020 degrees
and 222 degrees (both at 881 watts ERP). For anyone who wishes to
receive a graphic of KJJK's night pattern, e-mail a request to me. Be
sure to indicate the format you require (BMP, PCX, WMF, etc).

According to the LA Radio People web site, a reliable source, on March
13 KKTR-1650 will abandon its all traffic reports format and switch
(back) to adult standards (Music of Your Life)//co-owned KGIL-1260. One
thing you can't say about owner Saul Levine is that he doesn't like to
experiment. He'll try something (make that anything) at the drop of a
hat. Those of you who live in Southern California know what I mean. He
changed KGIL's city of license from San Fernando (a mostly poor,
Hispanic area) to Beverly Hills. He recently changed KKTR's city of
license from Costa Mesa to Torrance. Let's see; 1650 has been all
Beatles, adult standards, and all traffic reports in its short lifetime.
Just another day on 1260 and 1650 in LA.

Just wanted to let everyone know that CJCY, 1390 khz, here in
Medicine Hat, which has been simulcasting the new FM outlet since Feb
1st left the air today at 12:00 noon local time. I'd been anticipating
a longer simulcast period, but they announced on the news this morning
that 1390 would be leaving the air at noon, which they did, in mid
sentence.
KLGN in Utah seems to be the dominant station here on 1390 this
evening, with a couple of others audible in the background.

WNML-1670 Warner Robins, GA has changed calls to WRNC, and format from
all Sports to ABC Real Country. Noted 3/3 0600 pummeling WTDY.

WNCT-1070 seems to be doing fairly well with its new Hispano
programming. I've been hearing numerous ads for local and national
accounts, a far cry from the old WNCT's blah programming.

Anyway, it's mostly Mexican Nortena and Frontera music, plus Salsa
(P.R.) and Cumbia (Dominican Republic).

Observed still Beach Music till around 1500, then XE afterward. Believe
the changeover is at 1500. If they had half a programming brain, they'd
drop the Beach music for fulltime XE. Beach music is duplicated by
other, FM, stations; but they're the closest thing to a real fulltime
Hispano station in this area. WEED-1390 and WETC-540 fiddle/fool with
the Hispano programming, doing a poor job, and covering poorly in the
bargain.

Also, as noted before, no longer NSP. Don't know the s/on time. Likely
0500.

Ironically, WNCT-1070 amounts to DX in Grifton, as they are badly mauled
by old hometown WIBC-1070, and WINA-1070. First noted on new programming
four days ago as I was looking to log WFLI, Lookout Mountain. Heard what
sounded to be a Mexican on the channel, and who the heck???

In a reply to my question about Radio Sport moving from 1026kHz to
558kHz in Invercargill, NZ, Geoff Berry of Radio Sport answers:

"Yes, 558kHz has now replaced 1026kHz for our Southland Radio Sport
channel. We have also closed down our AM simulcast of Classic Hits (was
on 558kHz) in Southland and are using just the FM channel for that
brand.

Regards,
 Geoff."

The calls on the 1640 station in Sussex, WI are now WKSH...the WAZI
calls were moved to the now-silent 1370 facility.

As for KCJJ-1630's format...it's a Hot Adult Contemporary format, fed
via satellite from ABC, with talk in afternoon drive (the Don and Mike
show). KSMH-1620's format is an all-Catholic format...most religious
formats are Protestant in nature.

Just got back from Mexico. Yeah, that's right...seven straight weeks of
sun!

A friend in Puerto Vallarta needs a fix on his DX-440. There's no sound
at all coming out of the speaker, even though the other functions seem
to work. Know anybody who works on those things? Are they even worth
repairing?
