zone). Please remember, what's listed as being on, say, Monday *may* be
what you think of as Sunday night! * = new since last time.

DETAILS:

KJJK-Fergus Falls, Minnesota will test with Morse code IDs on Monday
morning, April 26th, 1999 from 0500 to 0600 Eastern Time. KJJK will NOT
be operating with on their 2000 watts non-directional, as their initial

and 222 degrees (both at 881 watts ERP). For anyone who wishes to
receive a graphic of KJJK's night pattern, e-mail a request to me. Be
sure to indicate the format you require (BMP, PCX, WMF, etc).

ICF-2010, KIWA Loop

1690 WMDM MD, Lexington Park 4/7 0611 Surprisingly good signal
through KDDZ (or whatever their calls are this week!) with local
talk, promo for community bulletin board feature, weather, ad for
local Chevy/Olds dealer. Got very strong during promo that
mentioned "Helping to shape tomorrow's leaders, only on Bay Talk
16-90, WMDM." Bay Talk 16-90 mentioned often. New, MD #3,
suspect they went to day power too early, perhaps due to daylight
savings time? Tried for the VA station on 1650 at sunrise, only
noted some very faint talk. (TRH-CA)

Closing in on the X-band stations. Still need the 1620s in AL and IN
(not likely with local pests and KSMH), the 1640 in WI, the 1650 in VA,
and the 1680 in NJ.

Heard a TIS from Idaho State University on 1610 khz this weekend around
local sunrise at 0650 MST, with a woman giving directions and parking
info. Call sign given by a woman as KNNV605. First time heard, and
strangely, it was all alone on the frequency. Had been trying for some
Aussie signals, but only hets from there.

Ok guys, I got an UNID and am ticked because it is the CBC I think and
they don't ID too well over night.

Heard on a Realistic DX440 barefoot:

860 UNID from 0133 to 0221 4/9 at fade out. Was playing nothing except
light rock music for the whole time with no ads and no ID. Could
       this be CBKF2 from Saskatoon?

***

*Mike Stonebridge - stonbrdg@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

You definitely did not have the CBC English service. They play Radio
Australia, the BBC, etc, all night. Light rock does not sound like the
CBC, but could be. I'll check after dark tonight and see if I can hear
CBKF2.

*Craig - Denver CO - DXer@xxxxxxx

The lite rock doesnt sound like them. They are also a French speaking
station. I will listen there tonight also and see what I hear. KOA does
make it a mess at times. What were they playing, what is light rock now?

*Pat Martin - Seaside OR - mwdxer@xxxxxxxxx

Could it be rel rock (KPAM) or possible Radio Disney (KBEE-UT)?

***

*ragnar danneskjold - Mesa AZ - lwdxer@xxxxxxxx

This one was NNE/SSW from me from the way the radio was located. Guess
was about 30/210 from Mesa/ Phoenix area.

That easy stuff like women listen to.

"Could it be rel rock (KPAM) or possible Radio Disney (KBEE-UT)?"

No way. It reminded me a bit of the CBC station that was FF in Eastern
Canada and played music all night, except that one played jazz and this
one played easy rock music. This was the kind of stuff women listen to.
It ran almost an hour with zero ads and zero IDs. Definitely was NOT
religious.

There is no way it was R. Disney because KMIK ex-KCWW is 3 miles from my
house and I know what they sound like.

Was on 860 kHz. I have never heard them before. Got them nulling a local
KMVP on 860.

It could also be all-oldies KONO San Antonio, TX.

are typically Argentine with local, folklore music and tangos.
They have an FM sister-station FM News 98.3.

A great way to make secure and watertight splices that will last until
your next elk attack are little guys called Scotchlocks. It generally
has three spaces that you can put wires into. You press down a plastic
button that has a piece of metal attached to it and the wires get
spliced. The icing on the cake is that they also have a blob of RTV
silicone sealant in them to make a very long lasting splice. These were
developed for Telco use and are available through Radio Shack and a
bunch of other places. Once you try them, you'll never solder again
outdoors.

Mike Maloney - ac5p@xxxxxxxxx

Have you considered electric fence wire for subject? Although bare, it
is available with copper clad to wit the feedline can be soldered to.
Some advantages are: can be tensioned fiddle string tight w/o worry of
breaking, comes in 1/4mi (or longer) spools, much cheaper than soft
copper and much stronger. Although an animal might pull it off the
supports or pull the supports out of the ground, I doubt one could break
it. It is extreeemly strong stuff tensile strength wise.

*Charles Taylor - Charles_Taylor@xxxxxxxxxxxx]

About Beverage antennas and all such long stuff, a good class of strong
but cheap wire is the commo stuff that Fair Radio sells on spools. It's
twisted pair outside telephone cable. It consists of several strands of
about #30AWG wire ovelayed with several strands of about #30AWG tinned
copper wire, covered by a strong plastic jacket.

There are two problems: If you want to use a single conductor of the
pair as I do, you must untwist the pair. That's quite a job. If you
choose to use the pair as is, it's cheap enough that way to make it
attractive.

Other problem is splices. If the elements invade the jacket, the steel
wire rusts rapidly, corrodes away, and leaves the weak copper wire to
bear the load... pppsfxkk! Therefore, after making a GOOD splice, it's
absolutely necessary to seal the splice from the elements. The
aforementioned splice is probably sufficient; but to be safe, it would
be wise to seal the entire splice in silicone sealer such as RadioShack
sells.

This stuff is strong, on account of the steel wire. In fact, if an elk
rips your antenna down, just take a few feet of this commo wire and
hog-tie the elk and transport it to the county (parish, if you're in
Louisiana) animal shelter. End of problem.

a DXcellent session at Granite Pier

Greetings to all. I've started the after-work DX sessions that I do on
(about) a once a month basis during the milder weather. Thursday
evening's outing to Granite Pier in Rockport, MA was a success on
several levels.

A BBL-1 Broadband Loop was run in the "K9AY" mode. A fairly good amount
of cardioid pattern nulling was obtainable with the 6 ft. (1.8 m) per
side square loop with one end of it connected to chassis ground through
a Vactrol (voltage controlled resistor).

With a cardioid pattern already somewhat established by the "mini-K9AY"
antenna itself, phasing its output against the active whip gave an
extraordinary amount of nulling: most New York City stations - usually
obnoxious pests - were reduced below the strengths of adjacent
Europeans!

DX highlights included Israel-1206; Greece-981, 1179, & 1512; Egypt -
774, 819, & 864; tentative Iran-1503; plus the usual blasters from
Kuwait and Saudi Arabia during a "power burst" of Levant / Middle East
reception (DX times: 8 APR 2215 UTC to 9 APR 0115 UTC). Some signals
came close to pinning the S-meter.

Many Europeans were strong (Croatia-1134 trashing WBBR, etc.).

Does anyone know how to "reset" or "re-boot" the software on a Philips
DC777 car SW radio? I'm experiencing a problem with the "AUDIO" control
such that I can't hear stations and can't see the frequency display. I
think it's software related.

ragnar danneskjold - Mesa AZ - lwdxer@xxxxxxxx

I ran across a DX-370 today. I got it because the price was right.

My first impression is that it is a rig that you can take with you
around the world and it will wake you up. I don't see it as a DX radio
and if you took it overseas and some government apparatchik stole it
from you, you wouldn't cry any alligator tears over it.

I would guess that this rig is about 4 years old.

Anyone else ever use one of these things?
