CONVENTION - MEETING INFO (corrections/additions welcome)

IRCA '99/DecalcoMania '99:  The 1999 IRCA/DecalcoMania Convention will
be held at the Holiday Inn-Boardwalk Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada on June
25-27  1999.  Reservations 1-800-635-4581 (mention code I-R-C).

WTFDA '99: The 1999 WTFDA convention will be hosted in NW Jersey, July
16-18, 1999.  Rick Shaftan will welcome you to his well equipped DX
outpost located less than an hour from the Newark airport.  For
accommodations Rick recommends the Days Inn/Ledgewood, 1691 Route 46
West, Ledgewood, NJ 07852.  Rates start at $69.  There is no special
club discount.  Make reservations by calling the hotel at 973-448-1100

NRC '99:  The 1999 NRC convention will be held at the Holiday Inn,

RADIO FEST 1999 - Celebrating 25 Years of Radio Fun

The Ontario DX Association invites radio enthusiasts of all interests
and all levels to join us for Radio Fest 99. Following on the success of
our first Radio Fest event in 1998, this will be one of the major radio
listeners event of the year. Radio Fest 99 will also celebrate the 25th
anniversary of the Ontario DX Association, Canada's largest radio
listeners' club.

Dates: Friday, September 24 to Sunday, September 26

Location: Ramada Inn & Convention Centre, Oakville, Ontario (located at
Queen Elizabeth Way and Trafalgar Road)

Theme: "Celebrating 25 Years of Radio Fun"

Topics : Radio Fest 99 will look at "Where we have come from in radio's
past", "Where we are today", and "Where are we going in the future".

Special Guests : There will be many and we'll introduce them to you in
future releases.

Exhibits: Equipment suppliers; clubs; technology from yesterday, today
and tomorrow; plus tables of used equipment for sale.

Friday
Wine & Cheese Reception at 7:00 pm. Join us for this opportunity to meet
other attendees in a very relaxed atmosphere.

Saturday
Registration will begin at 8:00 am and the program will begin at 8:45 am
concluding at approximately 4:00 pm. Besides the usual seminars and

(ELT = Eastern Listening Time, i.e. the local time in the Eastern time
zone).  Please remember, what's listed as being on, say, Monday *may* be
what you think of as Sunday night!  * = new since last time.

DETAILS:

KJJK-Fergus Falls, Minnesota will test with Morse code IDs on Monday
morning, April 26th, 1999 from 0500 to 0600 Eastern Time.  KJJK will NOT
be operating with on their 2000 watts non-directional, as their initial
confirmation indicated.  I have spoken to Mr. Swedberg of KJJK, and he
said they would be operating with their 370 watt night power,
directional only.  The night pattern has two major lobes: 020 degrees
and 222 degrees (both at 881 watts ERP).  For anyone who wishes to
receive a graphic of KJJK's night pattern, e-mail a request to me.  Be
sure to indicate the format you require (BMP, PCX, WMF, etc).

In Phoenix we have some major dial changes. Chancellor which owns just
about everything in Phoenix will move sports talk to 550 which was KOY
since 1922. KOY is simulcasting on 1230 where country oldies KISO was.

Now there is KTAR with a lot of sports programming, KMVP and KGME with
full time sports. This is only a guess, but I kind of halfway expect to
see KGME move to KOY's 550 spot.

Heres the lineup:
550 KOY [to become KGME?]
1230 KISO [simulcasting KOY, to become KOY]
1360 KGME [moving to 550?]

The only thing for certain is that KISO is simulcasting KOY right now on
1230.

Can Hearst do anything other than move sports from KMVP 860 to KTAR 620?
This would appear to be the solution now that KGME is moving to 550 AM.
Some media watchers speculate KTAR might also try News/Talk on FM,
bumping KKLT's Lite Rock format off the air. So, what becomes of the 860
dial position? This should prove interesting.

KOY has been a LONG TIME favorite here. They have been on since 1922. I
like their format and their signal is nice. The only thing I didn't like
about them was that they were not in AM stereo. The signal from 1230
KISO is lame as hell. The primary listening audience lives in a part of
town that the signal does not make it to. Chancellor doomed the format
and put it on a majorly crappy signal.

Tells me they don't want to play American standards anymore. There is a
station on 1190 KMYL that plays that music that will end up with KOY's
audience.

I really don't care about the moves, I get both KOY and KGME signals
well and KMYL too. My problem is that KGME has the worst morning crew I
ever heard. I guess other people like shock sports talk because they
obviously have the money to get the biggest signal in AZ.

Chancellor.... I guess this is what happens when a huge corporation gets
into the radio business. Such is life.

The move to 1230 was a surprise to me. I heard KGME was leaving 1360 but
didn't know where. I was even wondering if they were going to move to
FM.

Who knows what the heck will be on 1360? Thats a real question. They
have a 50kW day signal and a lame night signal. I also hear that KTAR
may move to FM and 620 also will be come KMVP sports talk. If KTAR moves
to FM it will be a hugely excellent move and people will get to hear
them at work. KTAR has a good signal but in large concrete buildings
with steel skeletons, KTAR doesn't make it.

I do hope KTAR does move to FM. It will be a very good move. If KTAR
goes to FM and KMVP 860 goes to 620, who knows what will go to 860? It
is going to be a real mess here in central AZ for a while...

1090  KXMA  Denver CO identifies as "Radio Tricolor" in Spanish.
1150  KCUV  Denver CO with sports commentaries in Spanish.  Ident sounds
       live "Kay-Suave"
1220  KBNO  Denver CO completes the trio of 3 AM Hispanic format
       stations in Denver on adjacent dial positions.  Identifies as
       "K-Bueno"
1280  KRFF  ?? Denver CO  presumably the local station relaying KXKL-FM
       "KOOL 105", 4 April.
1340  KKYD  Denver CO, possibly new,  identifies as "Catholic Family
       Radio".
1510  KDKO  Denver CO possible format change to Religion . Promos as
       "Power 15-10, KDKO".
1600  KCKK  (p) Lakewood CO strong with country music, 4 April.  No AM
       callsign heard but was relaying FM station KCKK 104.3. Promos as
       "Classic Country 104" and "K-104.3".

Just for the record, I also heard the following Denver area FM stations
which did not feature in the current "Denver Rocky Mountain News" Radio
Log listing, so are possibly new.

In response to a review of the 1999 World Radio TV Handbook that I
posted on amazon.com, a touring musician called Susan has asked me
whether the WRTH could provide information she requires.  She wants a
source of information on radio stations, with addresses, formats, names
of Program Directors, and so on to help her efforts to promote her music
album on radio.

I've told her I didnt think that WRTH was suitable  but that IRCA
members will hopefully have some good ideas of alternative information

While at work today I was playing with my DX398 and came across a unid
that kept repeating a tape loop stating "This is a test message...test
message number 7.  I'm still getting this signal tonight (0820 PM EDT).
I believe the signal to be local due to the fact I got it at work today
in downtown Boston and in steel, interference laden building.

1610  TIS   CA, San Diego  4/16 0020 New station is on the air following
       a few weeks of "testing 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10... testing testing
       testing on channel B" messages.  Short tape loop contains border
       crossing info in English and broken Spanish.  Does not mention
       call letters, or even which of the two border crossings it's
       located at.  I would sure guess it's at the Otay Mesa crossing, a
       few miles SW of my location, but it could be at the more
       well-known San Ysidro crossing 9 miles farther west.  I'll try to
       find out this weekend.  This sounds like a full 10-watt station.
       You may recall there used to be a 0.1-watt station on 1610 at San
       Ysidro many years ago. This flea-power station eventually moved
       to Otay Mesa and changed frequencies to 1650, where they promptly
       got clobbered by KGXL day and night.  Interestingly, whereas the
       old station contained only info for people entering the US, the
       new station contains only info for people going into Mexico.  The
       old station was run by the US Customs Service, but the new
       station sounds more like a CalTrans operation to me.  (TRH-CA)

I wonder if anybody has heard anything recently from the Quantim Loop
folks in Florida.  The last I heard was they had to temporarily suspend
their operations due to a traffic accident injury  and also some parts
problems they were experiencing..  In any event, a couple of letters and
faxes to the last known address and numbers have gone unanswered. My
Space Magnet barely made it through this DX Season.
