CBL Toronto to shut down June 19

1999.06.01: Toronto's CBL will likely vacate 740 kHz on June 19! This
evening at 2120 EDT, I received a telephone call from fellow ODXA
member, Wayne Plunkett. According to Wayne, who has it from a reliable
source (within the CBC's Engineering Group) the date for CBL to leave
the AM band will be Saturday June 19. Full details are not yet known re:
time, etc. Presumably, shut-down will follow the same pattern as already
used when the two CBC Montrealers on 690 and 940 left the air. Regular
programming continued there until the target closing date and time, then
a continuous tape loop announced the closure and advised listeners to
tune to FM. Listen the evening of June 18, just before midnight. If the
plug isn't pulled, then June 19. Thanks to Wayne for this information.

 THE "X" BAND

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

**Nigel Pimblett - Medicine Hat, Alberta - ntp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Caught a new x-bander on this evening - KAZP, Bellevue, NE 1620 khz.
Heard from 2315 to past 2400 EDT. Programming consisted of ESPN sports.
The only local IDs were as "Sports Radio 1180 Coil", except for a very
quick "KAZP Bellevue" inserted after the KOIL legal ID at the top of the
hour.

***

**Craig Rathbone - Denver CO - DXer@xxxxxxx

I also heard the station here in Denver very loud last night, 5/28.
It was ESPN sports talk. And the only IDs I ever heard were "1180 KOIL".
There were quit a few IDs and slogans. "Sports radio 1180 KOIL" and at
the top of the hour the ID was "KOIL Bellevue, Omaha, Council Bluffs".
Right after that the man said something that might have been another ID,
but it was so fast I couldnt tell. They had ads for Husker baseball in
the NCAA regionals.

1630 XEUT BC, Tijuana, 5/28 2125 UTC New station is testing and
sounds ready to go on the air any time. Power 10kW day, 1kW
night and seems to get out very well. Huge signals in northern
San Diego county. This station is based at the technical school
at Universidad Autonoma de Baja California in the Otay Mesa area
of Tijuana. Testing with horrible repetitive whatever-this-
       stuff-is-I-won't-call-it-jazz music and promotional announcements
for the school. This will be a huge pest for me, one of my
closest locals. (TRH-CA) (Not on the air at 0130 recheck)

Is anyone else hearing an SSer on 1700 khz with Ranchero music and IDs
like "Radio Groupo" and "Cinco seis" "Memorial day in the United States"
was mentioned. Does Texas broadcast in any SS? This was heard at 0720
EDT 5/30. Gary Jackson-Sacramento CA had mentioned a very weak SSer
about this time received at his QTH. Any help would be appreciated. The
signal was fairly strong, but faded out by 0730 EDT, off Eastern
Beverage only.

***

**Rick Evans - REvans5435@xxxxxxx

WCMQ-1700 in Miami Springs, FL is definitely SS, but I don't have any
more details on them. I can hear them here and in southeast Alabama
fairly well. If you are asking about the station in Texas, then this
might be one since it would be along the same line or reception.

***

**ragnar danneskjold - Mesa AZ - lwdxer@xxxxxxxx

Since you mentioned "Memorial Day in the United States" a likely
candidate would be the station in Miami on 1700. However, it could be a
pirate too.

***

**Charles A. Taylor - calltaylor@xxxxxxxx

The station in Miami has changed call. Don't remember new call. Probably
not source of Ranchera on 1700.

***

**Lynn Hollerman - gmhollerman@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I seem to recall KTBK-1700 in Sherman, TX had/intended to have a sports
format - but that was in March...but WRNU (ex-WCMQ)-1700 in Miami
Springs, FL is SS...

***

**Charles A. Taylor - calltaylor@xxxxxxxx

More likely the Ranchera is not WRNU; leastways not continuous Ranchera.
Miami-area sts. are mostly Caribbean/Cuba/PR-influenced; Texas, Mexican-
influenced.

That is not to say one wouldn't hear Ranchera and (Mexican) Norteqa on a
Miami st. Of course, one will, and possibly frequenctly, as Mexican
music travels well anywhere*.

For continuous Ranchera, expect Texas or other border states.

* HIAW-690 Santo Domingo used to do a continuous Ranchera format back in
the early 80s. "Radio Huarachita" they called themselves, and even used
Ache I A doble-U [HIAW] with the Mexican/western U.S. SS letter "w", in
contradistintion to doble-V,, which is Caribbean SS.

***

**David Gleason - david@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

More likely the Ranchera is not WRNU; leastways not continuous Ranchera.
Miami-area sts. are mostly Caribbean/Cuba/PR-influenced; Texas, Mexican-
influenced.

WRNU is a Unica o&o station; it runs totally unattended and fed from the
Unica studios in Coral Gables. On the weekend, Unica has four repeats of
its only music program, a one-hour segment with a lady named Raquelin
Gonzalez doing a countdown of the week's hits. It includes an occasional
ranchera, some salsa and some pop and A/C type ballad music. Lots of
Unica jingles. I don't have a schedule of Unica handy, but one of the
repeats is just after midnight Sunday AM, another at about 6 AM sunday
and another yet on late Sunday afterneoon or early evening.

Other than that, to the best of my knowledge, they have not other music
shows. Although, they may put a song occasionally into regular programs,
like for an interview.

**Pat Martin - mwdxer@xxxxxxxxx

There are tree XE CPs for 1700 khz
(1) Praxedis, GUERRERO
(2) Tecate
(3) Ocampo

***

**ragnar danneskjold - lwdxer@xxxxxxxx

Now before we all go off foaming at the mouth like I usually do, there
is a 1700 scheduled for Brownsville, TX. Either KBOR or KQXX depending
on the list you look at. Now those guys could definitely be playing
Ranchera or Tejano. As an outside possibility it could be that one
scheduled for Brownsville.

There is one coming up in Soledad, Cal getting up towards SF, KVRG on
1700. Could it be them? Rule out KNST from Tucson that is scheduled.
It's news/talk and EE.

***

**Pat Martin - mwdxer@xxxxxxxxx

Per phone call to KBOR-Brownsville, TX, KQXX-1700 is indeed on the air!
They have been for almost a week! 24 hours a day w/ Regional Mexican
format. Apparently this is the new X Bander I have been hearing.

Thanks. Here on the North Coast Dallas seems to be stronger in the
evenings, but since Dallas is abit further North than Brownsville, the
LSR LSS times would be different, so KQXX has been in a few minutes more
after Dallas fades out in the morning. So the best time to hear them in
the NW would be around 4 AM (PDT).

Speaking of KKWY, there has been a strong OC noted here on 1630 from
time to time. Don't have any idea of who it is but have heard it was
XEUT. I would say that if KKWY doesn't get it in gear quickly they will
not be heard in Cheyenne, their hometown.

Thursday night equipment-testing session at Pebble Beach (Penzance Road)
Rockport, MA (GC = 70.60 W / 42.636 N)

This is a site that is a bit more "tweaked up" for Latin American
reception than nearby Granite Pier (which is superior to Europe). I
probably should have gone to the pier because South American and
Caribbean DX was still rather sluggish, as has been the recent trend.
The BBL-1 loop using the K9AY system worked very well in nulling
stations off the back, without using additional phasing. Most of the
null quality tests were done pre- sunset on signals that were primarily
groundwave. The loop was aimed on about a 110 / 290 degree axis (in
hopes of African and Brazilian DX). Stations near the 290 degree
bearing included those in the Manchester, NH area (WGIR-610, WFEA-1370)
and in the MA Merrimack Valley (WCCM-800, WCAP-980). These could be
nulled better than 30 dB with the adjustment of Vactrol resistance.
Fitchburg, MA (1280) and Schenectady, NY (810), also off the back of the
cardioid, were nulled far below the co-channel stations (Maine-1280 and
NB - 810). A tolerable amount of reduction (maybe 15 dB) could be
imposed on WRKO-680 (bearing about 260 degrees); this allowed Spain-684
to come through fairly well. To null stations more than 30 degrees off
the axis of the loop, conventional phasing of the loop against an active
whip was still necessary.

DX heard:

27 MAY, 2330-2359 UTC: unID-939.93 (maybe domestic ?), Morocco-1053,
    Canaries-Spain-1179, Spain-1359, St. Pierre-1375, Algeria-1550,
    Spain-1134, Spain-1152
28 MAY, 0000-0059 UTC: Algeria-1422, Spain-1485, Kuwait o/u UK-1548,
    Spain-1575 o/possible AA station, Spain-1584 o/ Ceuta-1583.6 het,
unID-1593 bits of string music (maybe Egypt), Venezuela-1110,
    Croatia-1134. Venezuela-1140, Bermuda-1160, Colombia-1170,
    unID-1170.4
28 MAY, 0100-0138 UTC: UK-1215 o/Spain, unID-1209.73, Spain-1107,
unID-1100 mellow pops mixed w/ WTAM & HJAT (perhaps ZDK), Venezuelan
on 940 with Valencia mentions o/ probable Puerto Rico, Spain-684
    good, Netherlands-747, Azores-836, Spain-1044

On the drive home, a strong 1529.5 het against WSAI was presumed to
be the usual VOA Sao Tome "warm up" pre-sign- on test-tone sequence.
WINZ-940 Miami came up to a good strength on the Route 128 (Annisquam
River) bridge in Gloucester.

Something is up in Mexico. I am hearing XENY at a different freq. Either
they moved or they are getting relayed.

Heard on a Kenwood R-1000 with a zepp antenna:

730t XENY Mexico, Caborca, SO 1216 5/29 playing "All that she wants is
another baby" then ID as "This is Radio Geny" and then playing
"Copacabana" by Barry Manilow. Either XENY moved or someone is
relaying them here. Sun was coming up so I was unable hear to the
half hour due to fade out.
