WTFDA '99: The 1999 WTFDA convention will be hosted in NW Jersey, July
16-18, 1999. Rick Shaftan will welcome you to his well equipped DX
outpost located less than an hour from the Newark airport. For

RADIO FEST 1999 - Celebrating 25 Years of Radio Fun
The Ontario DX Association invites radio enthusiasts of all interests
and all levels to join us for Radio Fest 99. Following on the success of
our first Radio Fest event in 1998, this will be one of the major radio
listeners event of the year. Radio Fest 99 will also celebrate the 25th
anniversary of the Ontario DX Association, Canada's largest radio
listeners' club.
Dates: Friday, September 24 to Sunday, September 26
Location: Ramada Inn & Convention Centre, Oakville, Ontario (located
at Queen Elizabeth Way and Trafalgar Road)
Theme: "Celebrating 25 Years of Radio Fun".
Radio Fest 99 will reminisce about the origins of the Ontario DX
Association, the DX hobby 25 years ago, and we'll also look to the
future of DXing and broadcasting.
Program:
Friday: Wine & Cheese Reception at 7:00 pm. Join us for this
opportunity to meet other attendees in a very relaxed atmosphere.
Saturday: Registration will begin at 8:00 am and the program will begin
at 8:45 am concluding at approximately 5:00 pm.
The day begins with an audio-visual presentation, "The Origins of the
ODXA, the Gestetner Years", by Harold Sellers. Tom Williamson, a
shortwave listener for several decades will reflect upon his experiences
listening from three continents.
A panel of special guests will address the subject: "On the Dawn of
the Millenium, Where Do We Find Ourselves?"
The afternoon will conclude with the always fun Game Show and raffle
draws, plus a slice of 25th birthday cake for everyone!

In reply to an e-mail I sent Geoff Berry about the closure of Radio
Sport in Masterton, New Zealand (which was on FM), Geoff says...
"For cricket coverage there will be a facility in place to time share
our Masterton AM frequency between our Community Network station and
Radio Sport. The AM frequency is 846kHz. I know its not as good as full
time sport coverage but it is the best that can be achieved for Radio
Sport in the Masterton area."

I got an E-mail recently noting that 710 KXMR Bismarck ND is now on.
Quoting from that e-mail:
"KXMR - the 710 AM CP - went on a few days ago, simulcasting KQDY
(Jones' Country satellite). The plan was supposed to be news/talk; maybe
that will roll out soon..."

I have a friend who works for a KXMR competitor and I'll see if I can
verify the fact that they are now on. This station has two transmitter
sites...one daytime (at the current KBMR location) and a new one for
nighttime.
When the new nighttime site was built two or more years ago it didn't
proof correctly and it took a long time to figure out exactly what was
wrong. Basically, the pattern was reversed. To correct the error, one
tower was removed and the entire feed/tuning system re-worked.
They have been running open carrier for long periods of time for
months.
As to format...that's up in the air.
Since construction and original planning...all of the Anderson Group
stations in Bismarck are under new ownership. My spies tell me that the
new game plan is to move the KBMR programming to 710 and let 1130 go
silent. That would make sense. Bismarck already has too many
stations...and even though AM is pretty healthy in that part of the
country...it's probably not economically sensible to operate both 710
and 1130 regardless of programming...particularly because 1130 is for
all intents and purposes a daytimer, and 710 will be full time).
It'll be interesting to see what happens.
BTW...this one will likely be a difficult catch for most US DXers as
their nighttime 'rifle' pattern aims almost due north (slight tilt to
the east). Among others they protect Kansas City and New York.

Yes, I heard KXMR Saturday night (10th), while listening from Lamont,
Alberta, with a simulcast of the country station on 94.5 FM. Signal was
quite good, over KIRO at times.

WJNZ-1680 Ava, MI (suburban Grand Rapids) is running their regular ABC
Urban AC format, but another ABC channel is mixing in off the satellite
with voice IDs and test tones. I thought for a moment that it was
another station! This at 2200 PLT on July 14.

Australia's newest X Band station has commenced on 1674kHz with Greek
programing.It's name is Radio Symban. Commercials indicate this station
is in Wollongong. The licencee is Mr Angelo Matsoukos at 825 New
Canterbury Rd, Hurlstone Park 2193, NSW Australia. Max transmiiter power
allowable is 400 watts. Phone number for Radio Symban is +61295546060.

WJNZ-1680 Ava, MI (a suburb of Grand Rapids) is in an interesting
situation tonight. As I type this (0030 CDT 7/15) WJNZ is running it's
regular ABC Urban AC programming, but another channel that ABC owns has
been testing (apparently on the same transponder as ABC's Urban AC
format) IDing as "This is ABC/SMN Dallas", mentioning the satellite and
channel number. For a moment, I thought it was another new X-bander
testing on 1680.

1673.9 Radio Symban, Sydney area, mx in Greek, ancr was distorted, but
telephone call from listener (on air) was clear from 1215 to
1245 UTC 7/15 7/15. Best hrd so far. At one point, it sounded
like the caller said "Symban", the ancr repeated it (I think),

network news, then loud test tones. Conditions lousy at this end
of the band lately, so nothing heard in their absence. Local
XEMMM-800 is on all night (formerly they ran open carrier
0300-0800) and producing tons of slop; seems to be running way
more than their licensed 1kW. ICF-2010 audio is getting pretty

anthem. WRTH shows s/on at 1200, but I got a good clear ID "Ekkes Aayy
Achee Tey" and the slogan "Estereo Radio" ! Signal peaked at 1118 with
good Tropical and Ballades mx. Well over QRM. A new one for me. Drake
R8B with 300 foot "Kahuna" Dipole" and ANC-4 noise cancellor.
HJCY and XEFW are the most commonly heard here under a usually weak or
non-existant KGO. AFN Tokyo very rare.

I (and the rest of my family) spent several days at East Harwich, MA
on Cape Cod. We all did usual tourist activities including the beach,
shopping, and dining out. I also managed a bit of DX. This note just
contains a few quick observations: a comprehensive report will be issued
later.
The band conditions notes may be of interest to the Grayland, WA
DXpedition crew and also to Bruce Conti, who recently DXed from Florida.
The best time to listen was undoubtedly from one half hour before
local sunset to 2 hours after sunset. This corresponds roughly to a
2345 UTC start time and 0215 UTC end time.
Low frequencies on the MW band proved more useful than the higher end
of the dial. The best opening was from 0000 to 0100 UTC on 10 JUL when
four Brazilians (600, 620, 690, and 760) were logged at good strength.
Surprisingly, on several evenings, northern European low-banders such as
Ireland-567, UK-693, and Netherlands-747 were very strong.
Madeira Islands on 603 made an appearance. Usual blasters such as the
various Canary Islands, Spain, and Morocco low-band signals boomed in
around sunset but tended to submerge into domestic slop after 0200 UTC.
The same was true of Venezuelans and the Caribbean splits (535, 555,
705): initially good, but in the "dumper" later in the evening. Cubans
weren't that strong.
PJB-800 was buried by the Canadians. The Atlantic Canada stations
were huge: even CBNA-600 St. Anthony, NF was good, easily overriding
more common CKCL, WICC, and Latin Americans. CKGA-650 Gander held its
own against Antena Dos and WSM. CBL-vacated 740 is now firmly the
property of CHCM, with occasional hints of WJIB and Cuba well under.
Other CBC-network vacated channels are 690 and 940. 690 has a Brazil /
Anguilla mix at sunset; later on Brazil drops out and Colombia and Cuba
fade in, though Anguilla's preaching stays dominant overall. On 940,
WIPR-PR, 2 Venezuelans, Colombia and the religious domestics (WADV,
WKGM) mix it up in the early evening. Cuba, Mexico, and WINZ (FL) join
in later.
I used two slopers off the tops of ~ 20 m tall pitch pine trees at
the E. Harwich house. One sloper was aimed 75 degrees for southern
Europe and the other 165 degrees for the Caribbean. A 100 m wire on the
ground was aimed at 100 degrees. It didn't exhibit much directionality
and it was used mostly as a noise-reducing ground radial. A inverted
triangular K9AY loop of 8.5 m per side was tested briefly. Nulls of New
York City stations were achievable, but generally phasing the two
slopers gave the deepest "pest" nulls. All logs were made on a Drake
R8A receiver.
It's good to see Al Merriman's lively and informative
antenna comments on the E-mail lists once again.

Does anyone have an idea of the station on 810 khz playing EZL Rel type
music with a low keyed announcer giving the weather at 0430 EDT 7/11.
This would take over WGY at times and some SSstation, KGO off.

I listened to KGO go off and heard the tone for a while then KGO went
off. I tried several different rigs and antennas.
I tried these combinations:
Kenwood R-1000 with zepp antenna for E-W reception
Kenwood R-1000 with Slinky antenna for W reception.
Realistic DX440 with internal antenna.
Realistic DX440 with Select-A-Tenna.
GE SRIII with internal antenna.
GE SRIII with Select-A-Tenna.
I first heard KGO go off on the R-1000 and zepp, then fell asleep.
Woke up about 0230 MST and listened again. No sign of WHB as country
music was not noted at any time here. I was unable to get any IDs and it
frustrated the heck out of me. I didn't get much for the half hour. We
are having the monsoons here and Tons-O-Static. Had KFLT blasting 50kW
here on 830 kHz from Tucson last night as well. They were not helping by
not cutting back power as they were supposed to at sunset.
R-1000 with zepp: Very weak EE talking and some UNID SS station both
very weak and beating against each other in about a 1/4 second beat.
These guys were out more than in. Out of about 30 minutes of listening,
I couldn't have heard five minutes interspersed through out the half
hour where they were discernable.
R-1000 with Slinkys for W reception: Faint male voice so weak as not
to be able to discern what language it was.
DX440 with internal antenna: Only could hear a beat het with a 1/4
second beat.
DX440 with Select-A-Tenna: Very faint SS with beat from another
station.
GE SRIII with internal antenna: Heard a het.
GE SRIII with Select-A-Tenna: Got a het with 1/4 second beat.
Others heard from last night of note...
A monster het on 1548 kHz. I assume this was 4QD trying to come in. I
have a fairly strong SS station on 1550 so there was no way to hear it
if it was 4QD.
Now this one interests me....
We have a local on 1480, KPHX. They are one of about a hundred
billion SS stations heard in Arizona that I just don't listen to. Late
at night they have a little narrow null space and I heard a weak Chinese
or some other similar Asian language, on 1480. The null of KPHX is due
north.
Who the heck has Asian programming late at night on 1480? I have
never heard these guys before. Ideas?
This one was heard on a DX440 and Select-A-Tenna.

"As a favor to some friends, I am trying to trace the history of the
1030 freq. in Sacramento, especially as KIOQ. My memory is that KIOQ
existed for awhile in the early to mid 80s, became KHWY (country) for
awhile, then went dark. Others remember hearing the station as KIOQ in
the late 80s. Could someone with a good reference library research this

KCJJ in Iowa City is a rather interesting station. The station is
about 60 miles from Davenport, where I live.
That owner/manager Steve Bridges has a bit of a reputation in the
local radio scene. In the early 1990s, he was a morning jock at one of
the FM stations here in the Davenport area and was involved in an
incident in which a person he was interviewing used profanity on the
air. Because Steve didn't "push the button" to cut out the profanity (he
says he didn't expect this person to do anything like that), the FCC
slapped him with what was a record fine at that time. (They knew about
it because a rival station happened to be taping his show and sent the
FCC a tape of what happened.)
Since then, Bridges fine has been exceeded by the infamous Howard
Stern, but his is still second on the list for FCC fines. The last I
knew (about a year or so ago), Bridges was still refusing to pay the
fine.
The FCC, however, has the fine listed under his old on-air name
(which I can't remember) and not his legal name of Steve Bridges. When a
short time later he applied to buy KCJJ in Iowa City, the outstanding
fine never came up. After that, when he applied for the expanded band
frequency, again, his problem with the outstanding fine still didn't
come up. When I talked to him two years ago, he said he didn't think the
FCC knew it was the same person.
A lot of local media people think Steve got a raw deal with the fine.
Apparently the person he was interviewing had some connections with the
person at the competiting station who provided the FCC with the tape.
Some people think it was a set-up. But, the FCC maintains the incident
was his fault.
Steve continues to be controversial, though. Until last year, there
were two local competing radio networks that broadcast play-by-play
coverage of University of Iowa football games (each relayed by various
stations around the state). A year ago the larger one was bought out by
an out-of-state company which then offered the university a large payoff
to make give them exclusive rights. A number of stations, including
KCJJ, were frozen out.
However, all but one U of Iowa football games were televised, at
least locally. No one else except the approved network could legally do
radio from the stadium, so Steve decided to put together his own second
network doing play-by-play announcing by watching the televsion monitor
in a local bar. His version actually got better local ratings than the
big network did. They took him to court, but he won the first round.
Last I knew it was being appealed.
Anyway, KCJJ is a station with a lot of interesting stories behind
it.

ICOM IC-R75
I have been testing the new Icom IC-R75 receiver for several weeks.
I compared it with my old & faithful Icom IC-R71E which has served me
since 1984.
My conclusion is that R75 is better than R71 with one exception.
Generally it can be said that R71 now has a good successor. Icom R75 is
approximately as good as AOR-7030 or JRC NRD-525 while the price of R75
is lower.
The most important improvement is stability. In my view the most
awful quality of R71 was unstability which sometimes makes frequency
measuring difficult. R75 is a high stability receiver which makes it
possible to measure frequencies reliably up to 0,01 kHz accuracy.
Another improvement is better SSB. The frequency is not changed as
in R71 when you change from USB to LSB. Audio quality or R75 is also
clearly better than the somewhat bassy voice of R71. Unfortunately
there is no notch-filter. However, it is available with an optional
unit. The synchronous AM detection works but in my view the SSB of R75
is better.
The receiver is very sensitive. My friend Ilpo Leppanen measured the
sensitivity or R75 and found that it is what is promised.
Possibly the best property of R75 is the twin PBT. There are very
few receivers in this price class that have any PBT. The twin PBT of
R75 moves IF passband at two stages. It was very effective especially
on tropical bands. I was able to hear some weak Papuan stations in the
3 MHz band on R75 with somewhat better signals than on R71. The
difference was not great, however.
IF-filters are good for DX'ing. Up to two optional filters can be
installed. R75 covers 0,03-60 MHz and has good scanning properties. I
used R75 during daytime to scan TV VHF-I audio frequencies to find
sporadic Es conditions. It worked!
Then comes that one exception. The info brochure of R75 promises
"Superior dynamic range...of more than 100 dB..." I was not able to
hear heterodynes or spurious signals until preamp 2 was switched on. I
live in Kangasala which is located 100 km East from YLE Pori 963 kHz 600
kW. Several YLE-signals could be heard on unwanted frequencies around
the AM-band. According to Ilpo Leppanen's measurements the dynamic
range of R75 is nowhere 100 dB, actually it is around 70 dB.
Is this important? No, it is not. You don't need to use preamp 2
which seems to be designed mainly for the 50 MHz VHF amateur band.
Secondly, you can use an antenna-tuner or a preselector to hear weak
AM/MW stations.
My summary is that Icom IC-R75 is a low-cost high-class receiver.

I didn't see any time-usage charts in the Technical Bulletin download,
but intermittent use really boosts the life of a regular carbon-zinc
battery. Maybe the difference is not so pronounced with alkaline
batteries.
The next thought is finding the best price. The local Home Depot has
them for $1.74/battery if you buy the package containing the most
batteries. Your Dollar store price is much better. Wonder why?
One other thought. If there is any chance of leaky capacitors, be sure
do disconnect the batteries when you are not using the receiver. I built
a 135V battery pack for my National SW-3, and accidentally left it
connected overnight. The voltage really dropped, and I made my next pack
using AA batteries. What a job packaging and soldering them together!
Another battery pak for my Radiola III and Aeriola Sr. (one and tube
radios) is still going fine after many hours of use.
