7/26/99 On a phone tip from Dale Park in Honolulu that KHVH 830 kHz was
off the air I was able to log XELA Mexico City, Mexico with Ballades
and Tropical mx good over domestic QRM at 0740 UTC 7/27/99. New one for
me. Thanks Dale!

***

*Dale Park - HI - DXFool@xxxxxxx

First, KHVH (830 kHz) is off the air. A transmitter part burned out
this past Sunday, July 25th, knocking the seaside tower off the air
about 1:30 pm (2330 UTC). According to the Honolulu Star-Bulletin,
chief engineer Dale Machado (who was also CE at my old station, KTUH-FM)
located a replacement part in, of all, places, Nova Scotia! The station
should return later this week.
In the meantime, the talk programming has been shifted to KIKI (990
kHz), which several months ago resumed simulcasting sister station
KIKI-FM (93.9 mHz). The format KIKI normally has now is urban
contemporary, and it's the third time KIKI-AM has been parallel FM (the
first time when KIKI was on 830 kHz.) Ironically, before the owners of
KIKI acquired KHVH and switched callsigns, KHVH-990 was news-talk.
These stations used to be part of Capstar's Pacific Star Comms.
division; now they are part of AMFM Radio, ex-Chancellor.
Bottom line--if you're in the S. Pacific, it's clear sailing to WBAP
and KGNW on 820, KNCO and WCCO on 830, and WHAS (and maybe Oregon) on
840. If you're in N. America, then 828 and 837 are do-able. I've
gotten WBAP for the first time in Honolulu, and New Zealand on 810 is
fairly booming in!
Elsewhere, to help boost ratings, KCCN (1420) has been getting
further away from its heritage as a Hawaiian music station. Since late
June, KCCN has been airing ESPN Radio sports-talk in overnight fringe,
which had been on the all-sports station KGU (760). KCCN currently
holds the rights to University of Hawaii sports. And several months
earlier, KCCN dumped the legendary Ron Jacobs (ex-KPOI-1380, KDEO-940,
KGU + KCBQ and KHJ) from the morning and replaced him with the old
afternoon-drive, SPORTSTALK show. As of July 5th, KCCN added ABC Radio's
"Fabulous Sports Babe" to its line-up, moved the local talk shows
around, and increased the ESPN content. ESPN play-by-play remains on
KGU, however. ESPN radio has also been noticed on KQNG (570).
Two other tips or non-tips: KULA (1460) is now KGMZ, still
simulcasting the oldies format of KGMZ-FM (107.9), using the slogan
"More Music, One-Oldies-Seven-Point-Nine." This marks the end of KULA's
third tour of duty in Hawaii as a callsign; KULA was previously a TV
station, then the original name of KSSK-FM (92.3). For some reason, the
official station ID is made at 10 minutes before the hour. Don't forget
to point this out in your reception report. Also, KUAU (1570) has not
been heard since May, so their testing was obviously done in order to
hold on to the license.

I heard WREN 1250 last night 8/4, and they have gone to all sports.
They are still using the WREN call letters. It was One on One sports
with many local ads. Slogans were "1250 All day, all night, all sports"
and "Kansas City's first and only 24 hour sports station". During the
hour, they had many local ads and slogans. Heard the actual call letters
at the top of the hour.

Am I the only person to notice that WJNZ-1680 has been coming in
consistently stronger lately? I've been up late the past several days
and have been checking 1680; first noticed while driving home late
(after 11:30pm PLT), and also noted in the neighborhood (nice that it's
been unseasonably cool as of late, no neighbor's air conditioner
running, hi). Have they decided to emulate the Utah Blowtorch, KXOL, and
run 10kW at night or are they just testing at day power, or am I the
lucky recipient of good cx to MI? The same effect is not happening on
1670; the channel has been pretty dead in comparison. 1690 sometimes is
equal to 1680 in strength, or just a little stronger. All of my
receptions have been around 11:30 to midnight, PLT (0230-0300 ELT). Had
some nice call IDs, some Stereo 1680 IDs. also some mentions of ABC and
transponder channel something or other (I didn't write that down).

*Pat Martin - Seaside OR - mwdxer@xxxxxxxxx

Yes, WJNZ-1680 is a total pest here on the North coast at night. They
must be 10KW also at night. I think WMDM might be too as they tear up CO
most nights.

Heard on a Kenwood R-1000 and zepp antenna:

 570 KGRT NM, Las Cruces 8/3 2237 playing "80's Ladies". ID 2237.
670 KLTT CO, Commerce City, CO 8/3 2245 Linda McDonald Ministries,
woman preaching and asking for money. ID as KLT 2245.

Heard on a one tube regenerative rig using a 1T4 tapped spider web coil
and scorpions stinger antenna:

820 WBAP TX, Ft. Worth 7/22 2342 with sports talk program.
830 KFLT AZ, Tucson 7/24 2044 with religious music.
990 XET MEXICO, Monterrey 7/22 0346 with Mexican man talking a
       zillion miles an hour.
1030 KTWO WY, Casper 7/22 2353 with Rockies baseball. Someone just hit
       a two run homer.
1210 KGYN OK, Guymon 7/22 2355 with Rangers baseball. Rangers won 9-7.
1390 KENN NM, Farmington 7/22 with a talk program.
1450 KVSL AZ, Show Low 0054 7/25 presumed with Art Bell. Hilly Rose
was sitting in for Art as usual.
1520 KOMA OK, Oklahoma City 0049 7/25 playing "Just an Old Fashioned
Love Song" by Three Dog Night.
1660 KXOL UT, Brigham City 0040 7/25 playing "What's your name".
1690 KDDZ CO, Arvada 0123 7/25 playing "La La Loo".
2500 WWV CO, Ft. Collins 0510 [UTC] 7/25 with time pips and weather
       report.

I have been running my rig with 45V until now. I spotted a few 9V
batteries and figured I would see what would happen with more juice so I
tried the little rig with 81V. One 9V battery short of a full 90V
because I couldn't find one more until I started typing this out...
Isn't that the way things always work out? I tried it replacing the 1T4
with a 1S4 and it was no go. Must be a different set of pinouts on the
tube.
Either I will use the 1S4 for an RF amp for the antenna or to make a
SW only rig. A question for you old guys. If I build the 1 tube SW rig,
and build the coils for that, can I wind coils for any freq I want. I
guess what I am asking is if I want to can I make it receive LW or up
above 10 mHz if I wind the right coils?
On a different note, I had an old 3" reel recorder peter out and then
a minicassette recorder bite the goober too. It's not my day for tape
recorders obviously.
Well folks, this is the last report from the little regen rig. I will
be going back to the more powerful radios looking for more exotic
stations. It has been a fun little experiment. You can get all the parts
at www.tubesandmore.com. They sell kits and you also can get the
schematics from a book, "Radio Receivers You can Build" by Homer L.
Davidson. I got the book at the local library youalso can buy it at
TechAmerica for $21.
I had some of the parts. I got some at Antique Electronics Supply,
picked up the tubes from a junk store, got labels by copying them right
out of the book I mentioned, and took liberally from a picture in the
AES catalog. The whole unit cost about $35 including the batteries. I
could have bought a radio that received a LOT more for $35 but I would
not get the fun of telling all of you about it and I would not get the
experience of working with tubes. Pretty much I have always worked with
transistors and ICs.
All in all it was a lot of fun to play with it for a week and perhaps
some of you will be encouraged to try it out making your own rigs and
seeing what you can hear.
Homebrewers of the world unite! All you have to gain is a sure
knowledge of the hobby you love!

I took a 300 mile trip to Kayenta, AZ which is about 75 miles south
of the "Four Corners" where AZ, CO, NM, and UT all meet. It is the high
desert and very unpopulated. You have seen the area where I was many
times in them movies because it is very near "Monument Valley", which is
very prominent in all the John Wayne cowboy movies.
I took along two radios and a Select-A-Tenna. I found the area
extremely electrically quiet and the soil conductivity even worse than
the Phoenix area because all the ground is actually sandstone. I also
found that it is a radio free hole in the earth.

Here's what I heard:

Realistic DX 370 with Select-A-Tenna;

540 XEBACH Tijuana, BN, Mexico 7/31 0216 playing classical music.

       music.
570 KNRS Salt Lake City, UT 7/31 0235 with Art Bell and an UNID C&W
station interfering. Would like to know who the UNID is.
600 KSJB Jamestown, ND 7/31 0258 with ID and John Deere ad, then C&W.
630 KHOW Denver, CO 7/31 0300 with Art Bell and ID.
640 KFI Los Angeles, CA 7/31 0845 with talk program.
660 KTNN Window Rock, AZ 7/31 0847 playing "She's Got A Single Thing

Does anyone remember a station in Burbank, CA with the call letters
KWIK in the 50s? Also does anyone remember "Bob Barker" from The Price
Is Right on KWIK? Any help would be appreciated.

For those of you looking for a cheap portable, a knock off of the GE
SRIII is on sale at Radio Shack. The 12-603 is on sale for $39.95. It's
usually $59.99. I don't have one, I have a 12-604A which has been
discontinued.
