tried to suppliment this with information from my own database,, so look
it over "carefully" before you change anything in yours.

For those needing WTIR, they are coming in "very" strong here in the NW
with non stop TIS info S9+10 DB on my Drake R8. Go get em'

Greg D Myers - Richmond VA - gregmyers1@xxxxxxxx

A phine call to WTIR netted the following info:
Address- Travellers Information Radio Network
                  PO Box 149161
                  Orlando,FL 32814
                  ATN: Mr. Mike Singer

Mr. Singer stated they are printing QSL cards and they have been
surprised by the reports they have received so far. He also asked how
reception was here in central VA with WTTM not to far away. He seemed to
know more about DX'ing than most station personnel!! By the way, the
address in the NRC log is no good- ie. 1801 Clark Rd..

1314 kHz is showing a carrier this evening, 26 Sept, 0424 UTC, likely
the big Norwegian and most likely TA here.

This may not be the first time this season; I was just checking my
signal strength recordings for the last week, and saw definite signs of
life about 0430 UT on Sept 20. Didn't have the radio on then however...

1620 KOIL NE, Bellevue, finally heard call change from KAZP at 0555-
0601 EDT 10/4 with ESPN Net, ID at 0559.50 as "ESPN 1620, KOIL-
       Bellevue" into Net News. (PM-OR)
1660 KRZX TEXAS, Waco, finally hrd this one u/o KXOL w/ News, IDs as
"News Talk 1580", spots, CDT time checks, at 0745-0800 EDT 9/28.
Now I've heard all of the X Banders again. (PM-OR)

**Nigel Pimblett - ntp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Some notes I made on a just concluded 4000 km jaunt through BC and WA.

- the Environment Canada weather outlets on 1580 (Revelstoke) and 1260
(Sicamous) were both on the air when I was through there on 14 Sept.
Last year when I was through there Sicamous was off the air, but
evidently that was a temporary thing.
- 530 khz KNEZ390 WSDOT station with info on nightly closures of the
SR520 Evergreen Point floating bridge. IDed as KNEZ390 NE 45th Street.
Heard from the Seattle waterfront on 22 September. At least one other
similar station in the background.
- 530 khz KNEZ390 Same message as the previous station except IDing as
"KNEZ390 Northrup". This one logged in Bellevue on 22 September.
- 530 khz WNVA814 WSDOT station heard 23 September with woman giving
info on road/weather conditions for US 97 Blewett Pass and US 2. Seemed
to be located at junction of 2 and 97, east of Leavenworth, WA. Had
not noted this one when I came through this area after the IRCA
convention last year.
- 530 khz WNVA814 WSDOT station heard 23 September with woman giving
weather conditions on Washington Pass. Heard at Pateros, WA.
Apparently located at junction of 97 and 153.
- 530 khz (KAC203) Noted sign for tourist information radio on Highway
97 at Okanogan, WA, but was unable to hear anything on 23 September.
Seems likely this was the station I heard from home last month, so
perhaps it's seasonal.
- 1490 khz Saw several signs on the Rogers Pass between Lake Louise, AB
and Revelstoke, BC for HAR on 1490 khz and an FM frequency. Never heard
any audio, but did hear carriers at times, so stations likely only on
when required.

Bruce Conti - Nashua NH - BACONTI@xxxxxxx

While the night of OCT 2 UTC showed no evidence of auroral conditions
here as reported earlier, OCT 3 UTC began with promise. Early I had
Spain on the usual frequencies, plus 1053 and 1098. Then R.Rebelde-Cuba
1180 was noted annihilating WHAM. There was unID Spanish on 1090,
likely Union Radio-Venezuela, easily over WBAL. Venezuela was strong on
1140, and Colombia on 1170. Bermuda was good on 1160. However by 0100
UTC, conditions reverted back to good northerly reception. Talk Radio -
England was good on 1089, and Vermont and Canada again dominated
domestic frequencies.

 HELP WITH

**Albert Lehr - Livermore, CA - alehr@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

After reading Pat Martin's many reports of DZEC on 1062 kHz, I wanted
to see if their signal was making it over the mountains and down into
the Livermore Valley on the eastern side of the Diablo Range. Filipinos
are rare here.
Checking the channel at 1345 UTC 9/28, my sync detector locked on a
weak signal on 1062.0056 kHz. A woman was talking in a language that
sounded like Tagalog to me. It was too weak to be certain, and often
faded into the splatter. Some music heard 1404-1407, then it faded out.
Same station at 1333 9/29; frequency was 0.2 Hz lower. Two women
with possible telephone talk. At 1340 and later, a mixture of music and
talk, too weak to make much out of it. Strongest at 1404 (probably dawn
enhancement) with a man singing an American NOS song; gone by 1408.
I'm going to keep checking, looking for that "DZEC" ID.

Last night the usually all-powerful KFAB relented a bit, and I heard
XERED through it and also an unID oldies station playing songs such as
"Calendar Girl". Heard a slogan ID as "Classic 11-10", but couldn't get
a call letter ID. Ideas anyone?

***

Pat Martin - Seaside OR - mwdxer@xxxxxxxxx

What time did you hear it? On 1110 khz listed as
WBCA-AL- AC & OLDIES-10KW Day
WEBS-GA - OLDIES-250W-Day
WCBR-KY-OLDIES-250W-Day
WJML-MI-NX/TLK/OLDIES-10KW Day
WTBQ-NY-OLDIES-250W-Day

That is about all I can find. Maybe one of the 10KWers decided to test
if it was after Midnight. An LPRT? The CBC runs some oldies rock at
times. Not a split.

Last night I did get the calls to the station playing oldies on 1110,
even though my spanish is pretty bad it did sound like XEWR. There was
some english and mentions of El Paso also. Underneath there was another
spanish station which I assume was XERED.
No sign of KFAB again. Did they change something or I wonder if they
were off the air. No Matter which way I turned the loop I did not hear
KFAB and they usually boom in here no matter what.

Does anyone have reliable contact information for the following U.S. AM
stations:
-KFEZ Kansas City KS 1340 kHz; tel listed as (913) 342-1600 and 342-1340
-KLGN Logan UT 1390 kHz; tel listed as (435) 752-1390
-KLBB St. Paul MN 1400 kHz; tel numbers listed as (651) 603-5700,
  603-5720, 341-1720 and 333-1400

I have tried the above-mentioned telephone numbers, from various sources
(including NRC AM Radio Log 19th ed), none of which worked. I suspect
their postal addresses may have changed as well. Also, if anyone has
recent v/s-information on these or e-mail addresses, all would be
welcome. None of these three has responded to my reception reports.

Does anyone know the location of DXAB on 1296 khz (Philippines).
Apparently it is an ABS CBN station. Heard this morning with Network

Willi Passmann - dx@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

<http://www.radio-portal.org> is online since Sept. 2nd, 1999 on a test
basis, offering a portal site with search engine especially for amateur
radio, DXing, SWLing, Clandestines/Pirate/Satellite/Scanner. Further
features will be added during this month. Regular operation starts on
October 1st, 1999.

I regard the Internet as an important part of the hobbies amateur
radio and SWL-DX; it is the No 1-source of information already, having
expanded the possibilities of the mentioned activities so much. But it
is still in progress, and it evidently has to and can be improved.
Why a new search engine - aren't there enough already? There are
several reasons for a special search engine which covers selectively a
special field of interest:
Usual search engines will bring only a small part of the URLs, as the
database may not cover certain items adequately. In August 1999, a well
known search engine brought exactly one hint for the search
"longwave"...
Articles as in the the Los Angeles Times, on July 8th, 1999, confirm
that all search engines together only cover 42 per cent of the Web's
content - the best single engine (Northern Light) covers 16 per cent. So
a specialized search engine could work better.
But sometimes the problem of a search engine ist just the other way
round: The number of results, many of them without any connestion to the
search cause a bad "signal-to-noise ratio" that makes it nearly
impossible to find what you one is looking for. If you are looking for
"radio" for instance, you will not need any manufacturer of medical X-
ray or radioastronomy equipment. So a high number of scores does not
necessarily need to mean quality.
Radio-portal is going a new way. All data will have a close
connection to the field of interest, the URLs had been checked manually
and are being updated permanently. The search engine has been developed
especially for radio-portal, and it's fast! No frames are used, so every
page can be boomarked and saved on HD as a personal address book, which,
of course, can be updated any time.
The search engine may be operated in a very intuitive way. You may
search in broad by combining different categories, you may search in
depth by searching for words of your choice, or you may choose a
combination of both methods. All descriptions are available both in
English and German, and the language of URLs of interest may be choosen
for searches. Within the result pages you are also getting information
about when radio-portal checked that site the last time, and with which
result.
It is my hope that, due to a special newcomer section, new hobbyists
can be led towards our common hobby. This is necessary, as memberhips
numbers of Amateur Radio and SWL/DX Clubs are declining worldwide. My
service will be made public also in computer magazines. This kind of
specialized search engine is needed not only in the part of the spectrum
we are interested in. It simply is of general interest, so why not
trying to get new hobby collegues via Internet?
Beside that, the various mailing lists will be relieved of several
standard questions like what receiver - what antenna - what address -
what schedule... well, you got the idea.
Other services, as an archive about "How I started DXing/Amateur
Radio", or the Postal Rates Worldwide - Page will be built up in the
coming weeks. As a special service for newcomers, more than 100 FAQs
will be available!
Finally some facts about myself. I started DXing in 1973, got a ham
radio license in 1986 and a maritime radio license in 1991. I have been
working for the ADDX KURIER, a German publication for short wave
listeners, as an editor for 10 years, and in 1991 I started to publish
TBL, the Tropical Band List, also available via the Ontario DX
Association-Canada and the Benelux DX Club- The Netherlands. TBM is the
electronic version of TBL, available via download. I am also a
manufacturer of loop antennas and a mobile antenna system for field days
and DXpeditions.
You are invited to send any comments and suggestions by email.

Have just posted an interesting article on radial aerials (i.e. wires
simply laid on the ground) from New Zealand DXer Peter Chambers to my
web-site (see URL below). If you try these out, please let me know how
you find their performance.

I found a big list of all of the Big 12 football teams and all of the
radio stations that will be carrying them. It lists over 400 stations.
Here is the web address :

A while back I received a URL for a site containing an article
written by veteran Toronto broadcaster Dick Smythe on the occasion of
his release from that markets most influential station. If you haven't
seen it you'll probably want to go to
<http://www.nationalpost.com/commentary.asp?f=990906/72299.html> before
getting into the next segment.
More recently he was interviewed by Radio Digest.
<http://www.radiodigest.com/toronto/news/1999/tor_093099_smyth1.htm> I
highly recommend that you take 10 minutes to dissect what he had to say.
   While perhaps in some ways he IS a disgruntled and bitter (old) man;
he speaks volumes about what ails radio.
This dovetailed with the WCCO piece I sent to many of you earlier...
and while most of you are in the states...there's really little
difference WHERE such incidents take place.
BTW...as stations go...CFRB and WCCO were/are birds of a feather...
old... regional institutions...trusted...AND...FALTERING...no longer
"owners" of over 1/3 of the listening audiences in their respective
markets.
