[HCDX]: G Hauser's Shortwave/DX Report 99-64

        GLENN HAUSER'S SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 99-64, Dec 1, 1999

{Items from this and all our reports may be reproduced and re-
reproduced only providing full credit be maintained at all stages}

** CANADA. RCI press release dated Nov 10 said new SW transmitters
would be inaugurated at Sackville on Nov 16, capable of digital (RCI
Nov 25 via BBC Monitoring, summarised by Hauser) No further details
about how many, what powers, whether in addition to or replacing old
units, new frequencies, etc., etc. Who cares? (Hauser)

** COSTA RICA. TIDGS barely audible in noise level at 1824 check Nov
30 on 9725, confirming that he is running this all day whether it
propagate or not (Glenn Hauser, OK)

** GREECE [non]. Unlike the day before, VOG via Delano Nov 30 at 1220
check was where it should be, 9690, not 6030 (Glenn Hauser, OK)

** KOREA NORTH. I monitored R. P'yongyang again UT Nov 30 on 17735.4;
this time the sked announcement did not start until 0155. For 1200-
1400, the ME/AF frequency sounded more like 9630 than 9640; at 1500-
1700 6520, I think. At 0100-0200 sounded like 15630, but I hear
nothing there nor on other possibilities 15650, 13650, 13630. Note Al
Quaglieri's report of new 9850v going into English at 1100, not
mentioned here. Monitored again 0154 UT Dec 1 but still could not
nail down all the frequencies due to poor reception. Identical
announcement even more marred at 1255 on 9849.88 (Glenn Hauser, OK)

** KOREA SOUTH. Labour unionists at the Korean Broadcasting System
(KBS) went on strike as of Tuesday morning [30th November] to protest
proposed pay cut. KBS officials said that they do not expect
immediate problems in operations as non-unionists will take over.

Monitoring, exerpted by gh)

No mention of RKI in particular, but checked 1130 broadcast Dec 1 on
9650 Sackville and seemed normal programming, mentioning website
http://rki.kbs.co.kr which now has World Cyberstamp Exhibition up.
When you finally pick a country, frame showing the stamps is so small
that you cannot make out any details on the stamps in order to answer
the questions for ``boon prizes'' which require you to laboriously go
through every country page one by one. And how do they expect us to
read black type on dark blue? BTW, can someone explain the meaning
and need for the seemingly extraneous .co. which appears in the URLs
in certain countries such as UKOGBANI and KOREA SOUTH and not others?
And I saw nothing on the RKI website, at least not up front or
``About Us'' regarding the strike (Glenn Hauser, OK)

** PARAGUAY. Radio Nacional workers to stage indefinite strike. The
National Workers Federation (CNT) on 30th November will stage a
demonstration at 1100 a.m. in front of Government House to repudiate
the dismissal of two Radio Nacional del Paraguay union leaders. This
will be a peaceful demonstration. There will be no marches or
speeches. According to CNT General Secretary Eduardo Ojeda, the CNT
is summoning all media members to take part in the demonstration in
view of the fact that the state-owned radio station forbids union
activities. (Source: 'ABC Color' web site, Asuncion, in Spanish 29
Nov 99 BBC Monitoring, excerpted by Hauser) So check 9737

** PERU. Hi Glenn - 6522.04, R Ondas del Rio Maran~on, Aramango, La
Libertad, 0054 Nov 30, reactivated here with typical Andean
programming of huaynos, comunicados, ads, and numerous IDs to
informal signoff at 0107. Plagued by utes and fishing boat traffic,
but pretty good signal. Thanks to Henrik Klemetz for confirming my
transcription of the ID (Jay Novello, NC, Nov 30)

** PHILIPPINES. BBC 12095 in nice and clear at 1145 Dec 1 during
Sports International about Cuba, so I thought FEBC might have moved,
but at 1258 recheck, ``Jesus Saves [al-leg-ed-ly]'' IS was audible
under BBC (Glenn Hauser, OK)

** SOUTH AFRICA. Channel Africa has become quite reliable here,
including the English at 1800 on 17870 (Glenn Hauser, OK)

** U S A. It's 1754 Nov 30 and I am about to turn on the radio; what
should I listen to? The VOA Editorial, of course. Echoing on 17895,
it was introduced and outroduced as ``reflecting American ideals and
institutions'' - nothing said about it being the official view of the
US Government. Is this a policy change at VOA? Or does it depend on
whether they are filling in the absence of an Official editorial?
Sandy made a big deal of these not being written by VOA staff, so who
did write it? What it was about today made no lasting impression on
me, except for a dig at ``Fidel Castro's Communist Dictatorship''
(Glenn Hauser, OK)

** U S A. Listened to WGTG, 9400, more or less AM, for a few minutes
before and after 1830 Nov 30 when Dave was pushing SSB. While it is
true that almost all 2-way voice communication on SW is SSB, he blurs
the distinxion with broadcasting when he indicates that all SWBC will
convert to SSB within a few years. Can you spell DIGITAL? Actually,
Dave once claimed that his transmitters were digital-capable, so I
would not be surprised if he flip-flops on this issue once the trend
becomes clearer to him. Trouble is, there are no digital SW receivers
to market yet (Glenn Hauser)

** VATICAN [non]. The VR ident signal caught my ear at 1228 Nov 30 on
6020, when it certainly could not be coming from Europe; overriding
poor R. Australia. 1230 VR opened Guoyu, and the audio was quite good
for such a distant relay, via R. Veritas Asia, Philippines. This is
one of the less known relay deals, tho not surprising considering
they are all Catholics. Come to think of it, it is surprising: why is
WRMI more interested than WEWN in relaying VR?? M. Angelica must
think she is more infallible than the pope (Glenn Hauser, OK)

THIS DAY'S ITALIAN - AMERICAN LESSON. This will come as a great
surprise to those who have never bothered to learn the first thing
about Italian phonetics, which is quite regular and logical once you
know the system, unlike English. With the exception of stress not
always being as obvious as it is in Spanish, you can pronounce
anything in real Italian even without actually speaking or
understanding the language. Anglicization of names is inevitable, but
I believe that two well-known American SW/DX persons do not object to
their Italian names being pronounced correctly although they do not
make an issue of it. The trigraph -gli- has no G sound in it, hard or
soft! But an LY sound, close to the Castilian LL. So there really
should be no hard G pronounced in Quaglieri or Figliozzi. Try to say:
kwa-LYEHR-ee, fee-LYOH-tsee. Repeat and repeat. (Guglielmo Glenn
Hauser)
