[HCDX]: enhanced radio facilities with computers

This is just to ask if someone knows if there are some special facilities used 
with computers and receivers : 

>From  the start  back to 80s there was a very huge  measurement system from HP  
requiring  spectrum analyzer, special surveillance  receiver  used with  given 
gain antenna, and a logging analyzer with ribbon in order to analyze a given 
spectrum Also a plotter in some cases ( to draw 3D data?) thus making frequency 
domain and time domain easily readable 

More recently ( in mid 90s) i have read in RTTY newsletter by Universal  that 
someone has connected his receivers AFC via interface with his computer that  
shown the time domain of s signal Except this , i think SDU from Grove was also 
a breakthrough by providing a cheap solution  to surveillance monitoring by 
giving mostly the freq domain , with time domain being as second ( mostly short 
time fading) 

I m wondering  if recently  there were any breakthroughs  in it so that a 
computer  can make the necessary  freq & time domain analysis (with the 
provision of a interface) either  as a 2D  design ( spectrum analysis OR fading 
) or as a total 3D design (spectrum analysis + fading of all referred signals  
) 

Does anyone knows something more on this subject?
