CPC RESULTS & INFO
Here's the results of the most recent DX test that have been received
here:
KTNS-1090, Oakhurst, CA tested Sunday, January 23, 2000 from 12:00-1:00
am EST:
Sheldon Remington (KH6SR) in HI reports he was unable to hear the test,
although he did hear Seattle, splatter from 1080 in Honolulu, SS which
he presumes was Tijuana, and the 1089 hets. Frank Aden (N7SOK) in ID had
similar results, hearing nothing under XEPRS that he could identify as a
test. But Tim Hall in Chula Vista, CA says he heard a "respectable KTNS
signal poking through a delicate XEPRS null" (using a Sony ICF-2010 and
KIWA loop) with NOS music and very clear Morse code IDs. Patrick Martin
in Rancho Mirage, CA heard the test very poorly, using a Hammerlund SP-
600JX and a Sanserino 3-foot loop, through XEPRS with NOS songs and IDs
by a man and what sounded like a code ID at 12:48. Both Tim Noonan and
Bill Dvorak in Madison, WI were unable to hear the test even with a
partial null of KAAY-1090.
Also, I received a note from the GM of KTNS, Larry Gamble, who ran the
test, thanking DXers for their reception letters and saying that KTNS
would be glad to run another test!
WILM-1450, Wilmington, DE - tested Sunday, January 30, 2000 from 1:00-
3:00 am EST.
Bob Foxworth: WILM not hrd in 0100-0130 check period, Sarasota local
dominant over clutter (relays WFLA-970 px and IDs as such), could not
hear tones underneath, altho CX were decent to North with WCBS in fairly
well.
Frank Aden: nothing heard in mess that could have been a test.
WMAL-630, Washington, DC - tested Sunday, January 30, 2000 from 1:00-
1:30 am EST.
Bob Foxworth: Not heard, Progreso (Cuba) dominant // 640, when nulled,
a weak talk show in and out, probably the one IDing as WBMQ Savannah GA
at 0130. Some jumble farther down, unID.
Frank Aden: had KIDO nulled best as possible, nothing heard under them
that sounded like a test.
WMBT-1530, Shenandoah, PA - tested Saturday, February 5, 2000 from
12:00-2:00 am EST:
Brian Goodrich in Greensboro, NC reports he heard this test well
tonight, and mentions that the #MWDX chat channel reminded him to listen
for the test. He noted a great difference when the station powered down
to the CH power of 250 watts, and had a lot of QRM from WSAI. Steve
Francis in Alcoa, TN also heard the test under WSAI with code and
possible test tones. Neil Kazaross in Barrington, IL (NW of Chicago)
also heard them, though very loud, with code and voice IDs, on past
0200. Carl Scherer in Kitchner, ON tried for the test using a Sony 2010
with a homemade box loop and says what he heard was too poor to copy and
he couldn't say he logged WMBT. Gordon Bell near Troy, NY described the
test in a detailed letter to Dave Schmidt, WMBT CE. Barry McLarnon
(VE3JF) in Ottawa, ON says WMBT was heard immediately after midnight at
his QTH, and he heard several voice announcements, recognizable oldies
tunes, as well as Morse code. He also mentioned the group chatting on
#MWDX. Tim Noonan in Madison, WI tried for this test, and although WSAI
seemed unusually strong, he heard WMBT's Morse code IDs.
WMIB-1660, Marco Island, FL - tested Sunday, February 6, 2000 from
12:00-?? am EST:
Rick Lewis in Phoenix, AZ says he never got an official WMIB ID, but he
described hearing a Music-of-your-Life-type station on 1660, along with
KXOL and a station with ESPN sports (Waco presumed). This was confirmed
as WMIB by Bob Rodriguez and Tim Hall of Chula Vista, CA (who described
about the same conditions but no Waco). Ragnar Dannesjold of Mesa, AZ,
said he heard about the same things as Rick (about 40 mi away), and also
couldn't ID the NOS station. Tim Noonan of Madison, WI tried for this
test and did not hear it - he heard a presumed WQSN-Kalamazoo, MI along
with some weaker stations underneath. Mike Stonebridge in St. Isadore,
AB also wanted to hear this test but was unable to - he was only able to
hear KXOL on 1660 faintly over the noise. Powell Way(W4OPW) reports that
WMIB was smoking in as he rode up I-26 from Columbia, SC to Newberry,
SC.

KOQI-1200,Soquel CA. Heard this new station testing today (1/16) with
continuous C&W. Tuned in for several times at the top of the hour for an
ID before finally getting one @ 4:16 PM PST. In very strong, so probably
testing daytime non-directional. Will be interested to see how their
nighttime signal goes - probably due south to protect CKXM for now until
they move to FM.

1160 WWON Fenton MI 1/15. Still running old time country mx in
mornings. No commercials, just weather and announcements by host
"Ruth". She gives out phone number once in a while, (750-1911)
and announces PO Box 369 in Linden MI. Late afternoon format is
DEAD AIR continuously from well before 6pm to well past 7 pm.
They seem to be leaving carrier on all night! Transmitter has low
frequency distortion, and pops off momentarily on modulation
peaks. Dolly Parton's version of "Mule-Skinner Blues" popped the
transmitter off at every crack of the whip. (Russell)
They get music requests once in a while, so I'm not the only one who has
found them!
1160 WCXI Fenton MI new call 1/22/2000. New afternoon host and format
- Tom Day with "Classic Rock, pop, and soul from 50's to 80's",
with jazz instead on Sunday afternoon. Mornings still classic
country with host Ruth. Still commercial free, but mentions of
"Old Homestead Record shop in Brighton". Enjoy it while it lasts.

**Eric Bueneman - Hazelton MO - N0UIHEric@xxxxxxx
(St. Louis, MO) -- An article in Friday's (January 28, 2000) St. Louis
Post-Dispatch reports that KHAD-1190 and sister station KDJR-100.1, both
licensed to De Soto, MO, are off the air due to a fire at the station.
The fire couldn't have come at a worse time...the station was to have
been sold to the New Life Evangelistic Center of St. Louis on January
28, 2000. Both stations had simulcast a country music format prior to
the early morning fire on Thursday (January 27, 2000). The station has
been owned by Erich Schafermeyer of De Soto, and his son, Kim
Schafermeyer of Columbia, MO, since 1996. The elder Schafermeyer had
been a partner in the station since the AM signed on in the mid-1960s,
with Judy and Pinkny Cole. The Coles sold their interest in 1996. The
sale to the New Life Evangelistic Center has been called off, pending an
investigation of the fire. Reverend Larry Rice, the director of the New
Life Evangelistic Center, suspects arson. The New Life Evangelistic
Center had planned to change the AM call letters to KCBW, and simulcast
WCBW-1510 Highland, IL, while taking KDJR off the air. The non-profit
organization is based in St. Louis, owns six AM radio stations, seven FM
radio stations, two full-power television stations, seven low-power
television stations, and leases WINU-880 Highland, IL. KHAD is licensed
to operate on 1190 kHz with a directional power of 5,000 watts daytime
only. KDJR is licensed to operate on 100.1 MHz with Class A facilities.

COMMENTS
Got the DX test after re-listening to my tape. At first I thought I had
not heard it then after noticing that I had filters engaged to clip
highs I re-re-listened and heard clear Code ID's. Technology can be an
asset if used correctly but.....Anyway a good lesson learned.

1180 KYET AZ, Williams 2/8 2105 Alone on channel. Huge signal with
Phoenix Suns basketball, IDs, and local ads. used slogan "Power
11-80", which seemed appropriate as they sounded like they must
have stayed on day power! (KPHX-1480 was booming in with Spanish
coverage of the Suns game; they sounded like they were still on
day power as well). (TRH-CA)1290 KOUU ID, Pocatello 2/8 0853

1610 --- CA, San Diego 2/1 0910 Another new talking house. This one
is located somewhere east of I-805 near the intersection of CA-15

homework; when the Balboa Park TIS comes back on, this guy's
signal won't be audible anywhere. New. (TRH-CA)
1610 UNID CA, Unknown location 2/1 0910 UNID with 3 "phone company
tones" and "If you would like to place a call, please hang up and
try again". Heard with weak signals all over town (evenings and
sunrise) underneath my local WNUB568 and the station at San
Ysidro (Balboa Park station is still silent). Not sure which
direction it's coming from. Any other SoCal DXers hearing this
one? (TRH-CA)

The 1180 in Williams has been massive for (I think) almost two years
now. They never used to be as loud as KSL here, but now they are. In
Phoenix (Technically Tolleson, but there isn't much of Tolleson!),
there's an 1190 with a decent signal here on the west side, but hearing
1180 at night is never a problem. I used to hear KERI and KOFI, but now
I can't hear them often or long enough to even know I have them. The
Williams station just changed hands, but so far they haven't changed
policy.

**Pat Martin - CA - mwdxer@xxxxxxxxx
Has anyone ever heard The Punk Rock Radio Show on KTNX-1100-Cave Creek
AZ? Strong signal from them tonight. Outside of a pirate, I have never
heard anything so wild. 4 letter words are nothing. This program makes
Howard Stern sounds like a church service. I knew things were loose with
the FCC, but this it something else. I don't know if anyone else runs
this show.
Does anyone know how to find the exact transmitter/tower location of a
station off either Kodis or FCC site? I am trying to find the location
of KGAM-1450-Palm Springs without any luck. Thanks.
**Bruce Portzer - Seattle WA - bportzer@xxxxxxxx
Try going to the AM query page at the FCC web site. The URL is
http://www.fcc.gov/mmb/asd/amq.html
Run the AM callsign query for the station. The response will include
a bunch of technical data plus a button that will give you a street map
with the station's transmitter location. I tried it for KGAM and it
worked, except none of the streets are labeled on the map.
While I was at it, I tried KBBK and KFTA. KBBK came back as 970 in
Rupert, ID, and KFTA came back as no such station. Which I guess
answers Pete Taylor's question from a few days ago.
The FCC's AM query also includes a list of the sunrise/sunset times
for each station, which might be handy if you're not sure when a station
should change pattern/power.
They also include the station's mailing address, which may or may not
be helpful for reception reports. For example, the address they give
for KIRO is for the parent company in Pennsylvania, rather than the
local Seattle address.
**Bill Harms - MD - wharms@xxxxxxxxx
Yes, they are very useful. I think somewhere on the site you can also
input coordinates for any site, including your DX location and find the
sunrise and sunset times.
The mailing address would be more accurately described as licensee
address. Based on experience, the address given is only useful about 50
to 60 % of the time. I also use the site
http://www.radioinfo.com/calls.shtml for station addresses. However,
this site suffers from the "lack-of-update syndrome" and is about 80 to
90% accurate, this is based again on experience. In the past month I
have sent out about 50 reports and have had about 4 or 5 bounce on me
using both of these sites for address information. I have no idea how
this would compare to using the NRC Log or the M Street Radio Directory,
but I would assume it would be comparable.
I think writing an article on using the internet would be interesting.
I have IDd several stations using search engines or going to suspected
station sites.

Mike Tuggle retired and moved to Hawaii with his high-performance
crystal sets. He has heard a number of stations in the western USA, and
asked my help on ID'ing the following:
Question: Local 650 was open carrier for a few moments last night, and
classical music was coming through -- presumably WC -- any ideas who
this might be ?
Thanks, Jim, for the help with the unID: classical mx in KHNR-650's OC
at 0700 UTC on 21 Jan 2000. (That's 2300 PST, 2100 HST on 20 Jan 2000.)
KHNR had apparently paused for a news feed, because in a moment they
were back shattering my eardrums. I was wondering if CISL Richmond, BC
was a CBC sta., but from what I can find, apparently not.
Looking through the NRC AM radio log, I wondered if he might have heard
KENI, Anchorage, AK 50k-50k U1. Power is fine, but it has a talk format.
Somebody else probably has a better idea.

On Saturday afternoon at 1745 Mountain time I heard a station in Spanish
with Mexican music. No ID at 1800, but into English language ABC news.
Short EE announcement after the news (which was buried under CFUN), and
then it was back into Spanish. Conditions were favoring the west coast
at the time. Ideas anyone??
Pat Martin - CA - mwdxer@xxxxxxxxx
Maybe KCAL-Redlands, CA. They are SS and I heard them several times in
Oregon.
**Nigel Pimblett - AB - ntp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
My unID on 1410 turned out to be KMYC in Marysville, CA. Reception
was much better this weekend, and I heard the same program, featuring
Mexican music, SS and EE ads, ABC news on the hour.
Also of note, heard traces of Norway on 1314, @0310 UTC 6 Feb.
Completley vanished by 0500, at which point I was seeing a good auroral
display.

A letter verifying my reception of SS programming on 970 on 11/11/99
arrived today, but it was for KBBK and not KFTA (Rupert, ID). No calls
were heard - just "La Fantastica."
As I am sure you vividly recall, I first thought the SS was from
Bakersfield. After a second reception, I guessed it was KBBK. The
receptionist told me the calls were KTFA. FCC application listings
referred to it as KFTA. During a followup call, the receptionist still\
called it KTFA. I refreshed her memory (KFTA).
What's odd about the verie letter: (1) the PD wanted to know how I
found out about the call letters and (2) he said he still had not
received approval after two months and that it was still officialy KBBK.
He wrote on KKMV(FM)/KZDX(FM)/KBAR/KFTA stationery, I must add.
Two requests:
(1) Please be on the lookout for it (has anyone else heard it during the
past two months?)
(2) FCC file keepers and readers, is it possible that the call change
has been approved but that he just hasn't gotten the word yet? (As in
the approval is still lost in the Christmas mail).

Service. Read all about it at http://www.fcc.gov/mmb/prd/lpfm
I know this is somewhat off topic, but it is a major decision that
will change the FM band as we know it. Lynn, as they say down your way,
I hope you'll cut me a little slack on this. I think it is probably the
most important news in broadcasting since the disastrous Communications
Act of 1996, which led to the consolidation of radio stations by major
corporations and all but squeezed out most of the independents (IMHO).
If she'll permit it here, I'd like to hear other people's views on LPFM.
Things have been a little slow around here (this news group). Let's wait
for her blessing before launching off into this topic, since it is not
about medium wave.

STREET TALK
Crash Claims KSFO Talker
Cynthia Oti, a 43-year old financial planner and host of KSFO's nightly
Financial Fitness program, was among the passengers on Alaska Airlines
Flight 261, which crashed Monday afternoon off the California coast.
Oti, who joined the station five years ago, was returning from vacation
and, ironically, had prerecorded her Monday evening show (1/31),
anticipating she might be late returning. As a tribute, KSFO aired that
final program after telling listeners that Oti most likely had been
aboard the doomed flight.

I was looking in the FCC database and happened to notice that KARI-550
and KBLO-1600 (CP) had the same transmitter site coordinates so though I
would call to find out how their CPs were coming along.
I was told that KARI was on the verge of turning the 25kw CP back in
because the limited increase in coverage just does not justify the
expense. The main problem is the proximity of a nearby FCC monitoring
station. KARI didn't specify the location but said it was east of them.
I'm not familiar with it; maybe someone else out there is. Its
existence requires a significant eastward null. The person also said
KBLO and KBLE are looking for buyers and that no KBLO construction would
take place under current ownership.
In other equally exhilarating news, KBDJ-1650 Denver is actually KBJD
(confirmed on tape and in FCC database) and at least as of last week,
KBBK-970, Rupert, ID, despite the change to SS programming and the use
of "La Fantastica" promos, has not yet been granted KFTA.

The FCC monitoring station they mentioned is somewhere near Custer and
Ferndale, WA (I've seen it listed both ways), a few miles southeast of
Blaine. At one time it was a manned installation but like other FCC
monitoring posts, is now automated and operated from the Washington DC
area. The FCC is probably being cautious about strong signals
overloading their receivers, especially if they're operated by someone
3000 miles away who wouldn't have a clue there was a high powered AM
station close by.
