[HCDX]: Loggings from Grayland, WA DXpedition 11-12 March, 2000.
ZAMBIA 6265 Zambia's Radio one, with good reception at 0337, with lots of
mentions of Lusaka and Zambia in local language (Salmaniw, 11 March).
OMAN 15255 Radio Sultanate of Oman with pop music, and talk by a woman in
English at 0342. Good reception. (Salmaniw, 11 March).
15140 heard in English at 1451, interviewing Julie, club manager at Club
Olympus. British accented. Good reception. (Salmaniw, 11 March)
UKRAINE 9870 Finally, a useful signal from Radio Ukraine International in
English at 0400. Excellent reception, with parallels being 11825 (fair),
9610 (poor to fair), 9600 (fair except for het), and 6020 (poor). 9870 has
to be 1000 Kw if located in Ukraine. I don't think this is a relay, as
they used to do long ago with their far eastern relays to the west
coast. One can hear a mild polar flutter on their frequencies. This
frequency should continue to propagate well as long as the MUF is high
enough, and they don't change their schedule at the end of the
month! (Salmaniw, 11 March).
PAPUA NEW GUINEA 4890. One of the great pleasures of DXing on the pacific
coast is the fun of listening to these distant regional stations at arm
chair level! Superb reception in English at 0912 with "City Hall" program,
describing the emergencies hospitals face, stabbings, shootings, etc. Then
on to "Greening and Cleaning", with Port Moresby's garbage collection
schedule. All in all, a very enlightening program offering a glimpse of
local life in PNG. (Salmaniw, 11 March).
CANADA 6070 CFRX never ceases to amaze me with its powerful
signal. Heard at 1004, with sports report, then ID at 1005 as "Toronto's
news station, 1010 CFRB". Good to very good, especially using USB to avoid
a cochannel on 6069.5 (Salmaniw, 11 March).
INDONESIA (BORNEO) 3325.0 Not a great PNG morning, but much better
results from Indonesia. At 1104, RRI Palangkaraya, listed with 10 Kw, was
heard with very good reception, and frequently mentioning Timor, Islam, and
Indonesia. Initially thought them to be a PNG especially as the frequency
was right on, unusual for an Indo, but the norm for PNG
shortwaves. (Salmaniw, 11 March).
SINGAPORE 9590 Infrequently reported Radio Singapore International with
excellent reception going into English news after ID and time check at
1130. Parallel 6150 fair. (Salmaniw, 11 March).
JAPAN Interesting morning with lots of reception of NHK's low power SSB
transmissions:
3970 USB (listed as NHK Nabeta, Nagoya 300 watts), at 1140 with easy
listening music, and Japanese talk. Good reception. Parallel to
3607.5 USB (listed as NHK Shobu-Koki, Tokyo 900 watts) very good, and
medium wave 594, fair to good. Went into a Japanese version of the "Gong
Show", I think! Also parallel to:
6005 USB (listed as NHK Ebetsu, Sapporo 600 watts) good reception.
Other NHK low power transmissions noted on 3373.50 (listed as NHK Mihara,
Osaka with 300 watts), fair with het, and parallel to medium wave 823
(poor). Had 3 + 1 time pips at top of the hour, and an NHK ID. (Salmaniw,
11 March).
THAILAND 9810 Radio Thailand, at 1233 with very good reception, in
English to Asia and Pacific. Lower powered 9655 under a cochannel heard
poorly. At 1901, 11905.15 heard in English to Europe with fair reception,
especially if using USB. Paralell 9655 only poor. (Salmaniw, 11 March).
BANGLADESH 7184 Radio Bangladesh Betar, at 1236 with a woman in English
speaking about business investments in BD. Strong, but with a low
modulation and some transmitter hum. (Salmaniw, 11 March).
HELP NEEDED DFing UNWANTED INTRUSIONS!
We would appreciate DXers assistance in tracking down two very unwanted
signals spoiling things in the 60 meter band, and just above 25
meters. The most annoying is a pulsatile musical grinding sound between
4790 and 4825. In USB, there is a decrechendo nature to it, while in LSB
it's crechendo. Very loud during local night, and only fair to poor at
1817. Appears to be continuous. My guess is that it is located somewhere
in the US, especially in the west.
The second annoying signal is similar, but at a much more rapid tempo, and
has been present for many months now. It is more broad banded, heard
between 12100 and 12215. Heard loudest using a northwest Beverage again
around the same time, and barely heard on the west and south west
Beverages. This might indicate a California source, if located in the
US. Conceivably this may also be much further away however. (Salmaniw,
11 March).
CLANDESTINE 5101.30 (tent) Voice of Jammu Kashmir Freedom. Sign on at
1300 with ?vocal national anthem, talk, and in Quran readings at
1302. Lots of static crashes making reception difficult. At 1401:30
appeared to go into English until 1406, when there was more music
(Salmaniw, 11 March). The following day, reception was much better. Nice
clear signal heard at tune-in at 1337. Retuned at 1400, but English was
not heard until 1415. Snippets of English heard then "President of the
national parliament", "relations between the two countries". Mentions of
Kashmir. Fading by 1421. Still in English at 1424, but by 1429 not in
English anymore. Possible national anthem at 1430 and sign off.
(Salmaniw, 12 March).
CLANDESTINE 6995 Voice of the People of Kurdistan listed here at 1440,
but under a much stronger station, possibly CRI. Parallel heard on 4061.10
(Salmaniw, 11 March). Next day tuned in at 1445. The CRI (or possibly
Korean), signs off at 1455, leaving the weaker station in the clear, but is
back again at 1500. Parallel today found on 4060.54
(Salmaniw, 12 March).
MONGOLIA 9720 Voice of Mongolia with good reception at 1501. "Hello
everybody and welcome to the Voice of Mongolia", by female announcer. Very
folksy. Program followed on woman's day and children's day being
celebrated on the same day. Still can't find a 25 meter parallel.
(Salmaniw, 11 March).
RWANDA 6055. At 1606 African male with fair reception in Vernacular
language and mentions of Angola. Radio Rwanda heard several times
clearly. Good signals. (Salmaniw, 11 March).
AFGHANISTAN 7073.21 I suspect this is Voice of Shari'ah with middle
eastern sounding chants, and into talk at 1630. Unable to tell language on
11 March, but was much stronger the following day. Best heard using LSB.
7073.25 on the 12th, with what sounds like Russian at 1630. (Salmaniw, 11
and 12 March).
SAUDI ARABIA 15435 A very interesting situation here at 1659 + Tuned in
at that time to hear two Arabic stations. The dominant one is Voice of
Africa in Libya, while the other is Saudi Arabia with Big Ben-like gongs at
1700 and every 15 minutes. They both went into the Holy
Quran...fascinating to listen as they battle it out. Saudi Arabia
occasionally almost equaled the Libyan. There was no English until 1726,
when I could definitely hear snippets of English from the
Saudi. "Delegation, institution, proclaim..." Back into Arabic at
1730. So I can confirm some English from Saudi Arabia, and unlike the
past, this is not due to a studio error. English again might have been
heard at 1738. Maybe a bilingual program? (Salmaniw, 12 March).
INDONESIA 15149.82 The Voice of Indonesia heard at 1804 with a heavilly
English accented woman in German. Good reception.
4696.57 Radio Khusus Informasi Pertanian, Surabaya (Java). Listed at 1.5
kw. Fair to good with Indo music, and talk at 1304.
(Salmaniw, 12 March).
IRAN 9650 Finally solved this one, thanks to Don Nelson, also DXing at
Grayland, WA. Spanish programming often at very good strength at 0215,
until sudden sign-off at 0228, after brief piano piece. Apparently this is
the VOIRI, with parallels (not checked) of 6120, 6135 and 6175, with
Spanish to Central America. Wish their English services were as
strong. (Salmaniw, 12 March).
LIBERIA 4760 Music box heard until 0600:45, then a choral national anthem
until 0603. Poor to fair reception. (Salmaniw, 12 March).
SOLOMON ISLANDS 5019.14 SIBC with very good reception, parallel to medium
wave 1035. At 0941, long long spot about goods available at Golden Star
Trading Corporation in Honiara...toilet freshener, Sunlight soap, orange
and coconut juice, price only $8.20. You look by yourself and you buy
them. All sizes. Buy twenty five, you get one free." At 0956, song from
our sisters of church of Mulawesa (?sp). At 1000, into English with the
news from the SIBC. Population of Guadecanal wants to stop or limit the
internal migration to their island. Mentions of Commonwealth Day, with the
theme being, communications challenges. There is a serious lack of parking
facilities in Honiara city. Tree planting areas are being used for car
parks instead. "You are listening to the Solomon Islands Broadcasting
Corporation in Honiara", at 1004. No mentions of the Happy Isles during
the 30 minutes or so monitored. Superb reception, versus the previous
evening when nothing was heard. (Salmaniw, 12 March).
VANUATU 4960 Superb reception,at 0936 too of Radio Vanuatu, in Bislama
with religious sermon. "Help most northern part of Vanuatu. Help most
southern part of Vanuatu. Help most eastern part of Vanuatu. Help most
western part of Vanuatu. Invite Holy Spirit, you come. Bless the
nation. Direct this nation...Alleluia..." Carrier on, but no programming
when rechecked after 1000. (Salmaniw, 12 March).
BOLIVIA 6134.78 Radio Santa Cruz with clear ID at 1026 in Spanish. Only
poor to fair, best using LSB. (Salmaniw, 12 March).
MEXICO 4800.53 Terribly distorted audio from presumed XERTA. ID at 1057,
and again at 1100:45 in Spanish, and then signed-off. Relatively good
signal except for the distortion and interference from the "Space Jammer",
described above. (Salmaniw, 12 March).
UNIDENTIFIED 3635.9 Heard at 1313. Originally considered RPDT2 Buol,
Tolitoli (Sulawesi), but sounds more oriental, possibly Chinese or
Korean. Poor to fair (Salmaniw, 12 March).
UZBEKISTAN 5060 Strong interval signal at 1329, and into English with
"Radio Tashkent calling". Very good. Parallels heard included 5975 under
a Chinese station, and 9715 fair to good. Incidentaly, I recognized the IS
as the same one as I listed as an unidentified in last week's Cumbre on
7285 at 0200. (Salmaniw, 12 March).
TURKMENISTAN 5015 Turkmen Radio, presumed, with subcontinental music at
1353, fair reception. (Salmaniw, 12 March).
VIETNAM 4795.96 Radio TV Son La regional station, with fair to good
reception at 1340. Mostly Vietnamese music. Only regional I could hear
today. Thanks to Bill Smith at Grayland for helping to ID this
one. (Salmaniw, 12 March)>
MYANMAR 5985.81 English news heard at 1432 tune-in with signals that often
fade up to good. Until 1437, then into music, ID, talk. Country and
western music at 1443. (Salmaniw, 12 March).
ETHIOPIA 7110.0 Very good signal at 1509. Many mentions of Ethiopia, in
local language. Thanks to Don Nelson at Grayland for pointing this one out
to me.
6210 Radio Fana heard at 1511 with fair reception. Use LSB to avoid a ute
on USB. Stronger parallel 6940 is usually covered by a pesky ute
cochannel, but this morning, despite the ute, the station could still be
heard. At 1516, a man spoke, and this was translated by a woman into
English until 1519. (Salmaniw, 12 March).
ERITRIA 5500 Voice of Tigray Revolution. Nice signal at 1530. (Salmaniw,
12 March).
SOMALIA (not) 7530 Looking for Radio Hargeisa at 1608, but this clearly
is not them, but rather a Chinese or Korean station. (Salmaniw, 12 March).
CONGO 9610 Radio Congo with French and vernacular talk with good
reception, especially using USB at 1635. (Salmaniw, 12 March).
That's enough for now, folks! Happy listening.
