Albert Lehr - Livermore CA - ALehr@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Some time last October HLAZ on Cheju Island moved up to 1566.0565 kHz.
They are still there. Heard this morning 03/08/00 at 1354 UTC in CC.
With HLAZ a bit off-frequency, it might be a good idea for West Coast
DXers to look for other stations on 1566 kHz. Nothing here yet, but the
late winter-early spring TP season is about due. Those having receivers
with sync detectors or ECSS may have a shot at AIR Nagpur.
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-
Dennis Gibson relays the following from Jim Hilliker:
Effective Wednesday, March 15, 2000 the call letters KHJ will return to
Los Angeles!
In requesting the change, I presented to the Commission (through
attorney Bob Thompson) the argument that to say the present call letters
KKHJ in Spanish is to say an obscenity since "KK" in Spanish is
pronounced "caca" and to change the call letters to anything but the
station's prior call KHJ would result in public confusion.
In a letter from the Commission, they stated, in part,"In view of the
representations made and the statements submitted, as well as the
station's prior association with the KHJ call letters, we find good cause
exists for granting your request and waiving Section 73.3550(f) of the
Commission's Rules. Accordingl, LBI will be authorized to use the call
letters KHJ, effective March 15, 2000."
We expect the call sign change to take place at noon on Wednesday. It
is tentatively planned that there will be a short statement from KHJ
program director Alfredo Rodriguez (in Spanish) and a comment by myself
in English followed by the top of the hour ID before returning to music.

Greetings to all. I had a great DX session on Wednesday night (15 MAR)
at Granite Pier in Rockport, MA. This time, unlike some other sessions,
I got quite a bit of it on tape (highlights may be played at Friday's
BADX meeting).
It was a mostly clear, chilly, and very windy night over at the pier.
I had to retract the 1.8 m whips (making up the two sides of the
broadband loop) some as the setup was becoming physically unstable in the
high gusts. I recently acquired two of Wellbrook's fine broadband loop
amplifiers from Andy Ikin. One of these amplifiers was used for this
session: it performed admirably.
Saudi Arabia was running all-night with speeches and Koran on a number
of channels. Not only was 1521 its usual booming self, but I had a huge
parallel signal on 594. The Saudi-1440 outlet overtook the domestics for
awhile around 0212 UTC (16 MAR).
There was a good signal from Greece-981 at 0133 UTC. Middle Eastern
music was heard behind Croatia-1134 (so maybe Kuwait). Iran-1503 peaked
at 0032 UTC with a good signal. 702, a generally-unproductive channel on
many outings, offered Morocco early and Slovakia later. Usual big-guns
from the UK, Ireland, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Netherlands, Croatia,
Norway, Italy, Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, etc. were all thundering in.
Several UK stations (including "Talk Sports" ex "Talk Radio" - 1053/1089)
had news stories about BMW acquiring the Rover car company. Ceuta-1584
was spot-on 1584.0 rather than 1583.6.
Caribbean / South American signals were there, but they weren't of high
enough quality to steer me away from the exciting Trans-Atlantic action.

We must have gotten a significant blast from el sol recently. These
unusual conditions existed last night 3/7 betwen 10:30-11PM PST (3/8
0130-0200 GMT):
540 Virtually no CBK; very strong XEBACH
600 Very poor CKBD, only slightly ahead of KOGO
790 No CFCW; strong KGHL on top, with some KABC
960 No CFAC. Some SS noted in 3rd place under KKJX and KALE
This was particularly unusual because CKBD was so poor (pretty close to
home to be affected) and also because auroras usually just improve
reception to the south; this is my first observation of a resulting path
to the east (KGHL was very strong).
Whenever I turn on the set at night, I check 530 and 1700 before
proceeding. They were both normal.

I noticed on Astra analogue radio this Saturday morning at 07.00 UK
time that on 11.273 horizontal 7.38 there is the same "Oldie Sender"
programmes as 1440 am. However on 11.391 horizontal 7.38/7.56 there is a
loop tape in German with an "Oldie Sender " identification.
Is this because separate programmes are planned?
It's probably not related but have you heard anything about the UK
programmes?
