CPC Chairperson (IRCA) - Lynn Hollerman - gmhollerman@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

CPC RESULTS & INFO

WELC-1150, Welch, WV - tested Sunday, March 26, 2000 from 0000-0030:

Richard Evans in Indianapolis reports that WELC was on and fairly strong
at his QTH. Steve Francis is Alcoa, TN detailed what was played for the
test: Appalachaian fiddle music, an Eagles tune, tones, and open carrier,
and a voice ID by the host. Rich Line in Sterling Heights, MI also heard
the test and included some details about it, and that there was some CKOC
interference. Kevin Redding in Mesa, AZ, however, was unable to hear the
test, as was Bill Dvorak in Madison, WI, Tim Hall in Chula Vista, CA,
Nigel Pimblett in Medicine Hat, AB, and Jim Renfrew in Rochester, NY. Tom
Jasinski in Shorewood, IL reports he heard the test but it was rather
weak, and Tim Noonan in Madison, WI, says he heard a single tone from the
test.

Possible KOGT-1600, Orange, TX test on March 26 2000 from 0030-0100:
This test did not run. It was rescheduled for April 2.

This morning's Los Angeles Times is reporting that another set of
legendary call letters will be returning to the LA market less than a
month after the KHJ call letters were assigned to KKHJ. The story says
that KCTD-1540 will be changing to KMPC. KMPC was once a legendary
station on 710 that has had failed sports and women's formats in the last
decade before being purchased by Disney and becoming KDIS with the Radio
Disney format. The story has a couple of errors, which is not unusual
when the Times, an otherwise excellent paper, reports on radio, which is
very infrequently. The Times' reporting on radio has been widely
criticized on the popular LA Radio People web site at http:
//www.laradio.com .The story says that KCTD has purchased the call
letters from Disney, which is impossible because KMPC is assigned to a
station on 1560 in Abilene, Texas. The Abilene station is not owned by
Disney. The story also stated that KMPC was changed to KDIS by Disney.
KMPC became KTZN "The Zone", a format targeted at women, which failed
miserably, before becoming KDIS. I have not been able to confirm if the
change has taken place yet because KASA was wiping out KCTD this morning
in Santa Barbara. I'll report back later today after I've found out

I have two Superadio IIIs. I have found that my A revision unit is better

the SR units.

Mark Connelly - MA - MarkWA1ION@xxxxxxxxxx

I did a bit of DXing Saturday from Orleans, MA on the Cape. At sunset
it was "wall-to-wall" Spain. Also noted: big signals from Italy-846,
Switzerland-765, & Holland-747 as well as a number of stations from UK,
Germany, Morocco, Algeria, etc.
Ceuta has drifted back down to 1583.6 kHz from 1584.
There was nothing really new or rare. Lower Africans were limited to
poor signals from Angola-1502 and Guinea-1385.92. The "fetch" to the
Middle East wasn't as good as two weeks previous. Israel-1206 was
fighting to hold its audio above the slop from VOAR/nulled WPHT. The big
864 Egyptian was running a respectable S9 (not the massive S9+30 levels
noted on some outings). Despite auroral predictions, it seemed rather
non-auroral to me. French Canadians (like CHNC-610) boomed in. Latin
Americans were generally a "bust" with only a few of the big Venezuelans
(750, 1020, etc.). Typical Caribbeans like ZIZ-555, V.O.Nevis-895, and
ZDK-1100 were good. There was a nice signal from the religious Bermudan
on 1280, though BBC-1160 was getting blitzed by WVNJ et al. I'll add more
loggings in 2 weeks before I send out the "big report". Jean Burnell
said that he might do some DX this weekend from NF; we'll have to see how
that went.
I added a few more Real Audio files to my site. These include a few US
stations heard from Ireland in 1977. I've got an almost limitless
collection of audio going back to the '60s. I've got to find a Web host
that'll give me storage of 10 Megs or more, then I'll need much more free
time than I have now.

TRH-CA Tim Hall, Chula Vista, CA ICF-2010, KIWA Loop All times UTC

1290 XEQIN BCN, San Quintin 4/4 1300 Noted with new sign-on time.
Mexican anthem sung by children, followed by IDs in local Indian
language. New schedule apparently 1400-0300 winter, 1300-0200
       summer.

This is significant in that so far, most or all of the indigenous
language stations operated by the Instituto Nacional Indigenista in
Mexico have been run as single-shift operations, with a 7-hour broadcast
day. I wonder if this schedule change indicates an increase in funding
for these stations (and therefore longer broadcast days for other hard-
to-hear stations?

Format seemed to be soul and oldies, which matches their web page.
KSMM sounded like KSMN to my ears, Heard under WSAI. Night power
is listed as 10 watts; so maybe running day power by mistake?
Somone in Europe reported excellent MW conditions that night.
1620 KOIL Bellvue NE 1000 3/27 ID "KAZP Bellvue" went by so fast that
KAZP sounded like KZZP. That call is listed as the 1180 parallel

A couple of weeks back on a DXpedition, I heard a station running
religious programming on 1300kHz over several nights. At first I couldn't
pick up what the ID was though thanks to Henrik Klemetz, it is Radio
Misericordia (Radio Mercy). The tune-out time indicates that the station
is probably in Peru and conditions from there were very good at the time.
The id was confirmed by Jorge Aloy who also added that the phone number
started with 770....
Any ideas as to who this might be will be very much appreciated. This
Station is presumably also the one heard recently in Australia so it's
getting out very well. My guess is that it's ex-Radio Onda Imperial in
Cuzco as the tune-out time matches sunrise in that city.
Henrik was also kind enough to check another unid so now I have a
tentative id for the station heard on 1110kHz as Radio Antarqui in Lima.
Other Lima stations heard for the first time were Radio Ovacion 620 and R
del Pacifico 640 (stronger than the SW parallel!).

Thanks to those of you who responded to my query about the Powerside
unit installed at KRVN and referred to on the back of CE Vern Killion's
QSL.
I E-mailed Vern about it and got this response:
  Vern Killion wrote:

"Pete,

  Thanks for your note.
PowerSide concentrates the audio from 50-5000hz into one sideband. It
doesn't move the station but appears to if you have a sychronous
detector. In a standard diode detector the recovered audio is the same
except for two factors. The noise floor is reduced by about 6db and
selective fading can't cancel out the audio when there is a 180
propigation phase difference between the upper and lower sidebands.
PowerSide doesn't make the station sound any louder it just makes it cut
through QRM and QRN better. As I recall the undesired sideband has about
-18db less audio than the desired in the PowerSide frequency band. An
additional benefit is tha ability to inser a 15hz carrier dither on to
the signal which greatly reduces the intercarrier beat from a strong
interferring station. The dither removes much of the subsonic beat
blurble.
  Hope this answered your questions.

73's Vern Killion (also vkillion@xxxxxxxx)"

KRVN has always been friendly toward DXers. Vern even E-mailed me
acknowledging receipt of my report and stating that the QSL would be
mailed "in a couple of weeks." It was.
To those of you sending recent "wishful thinking" messages, we now know
how to remove subsonic beat blurble. If you local paper carried the
syndicated article about how the Internet is affecting our language, this
fits right in!

** Dennis Gibson - dcgibson@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Pete - I'm sure there are other stations running Powerside, but the only
other one I know of for sure is KSL. Their CE has written several
articles about it in Radio World.
