***Pete
The following note was posted by Pedro Hazel on the New York Radio
Board. I thought that it may be of interest to the group.
I know this is a New York board but a piece of radio history is
disappearing. WMAQ Radio will soon be no more. According to All Access,
the staff at WMAQ has been dismissed and WSCR will move from its all
sports format from 1160 to WMAQ's 670 50kw clear-channel dial position.
However, the WMAQ call letters will remain on the TV side. No plans on
what will happen to the 1160 frequency. The news can be read under the
following URL: http://www1.allaccess.com/members/nts/
***Mike Pietruk
More info on this story can be found in this morning Daily Herald's
radio-tv columnist Ted Cox's story posted at:
http://www.dailyherald.com/d/sports/columns/cox/cox.htm
Note that this url is a permanent url meaning that the WSCR/WMAQ story
will be replaced by the most recent story published which should be on
Friday morning as Cox regularly writes a sports media story published
each Friday.
***Chris Rigas
Chicago Sun-Times also runs a story about WMAQ in today's edition. The
link to their story is
http://www.suntimes.com/output/show/lead11.html
According to Jim Kirk's column in the Chicago Tribune on June 28,
Spanish Broadcasting (which owns other stations in the Chicago area)
could not come to terms with CBS/Infinity to purchase WSCR. The story
went on that CBS/Infinity will now try to sell the station to someone
else in a month or so. It is my understanding that WVON AM 1450 was also
interested in purchasing WSCR and its frequency.
John Johnson - Billings MT - John_Johnson@xxxxxxxxxxx
On the noon news on WGN TV on July 11, 2000 a story was read concerning
WMAQ. They said WMAQ would go off the air on July 31st and that 60
employees have been laid off. WMAQ started broadcasting April 1922.
"Score" would replace WMAQ. The WGN TV news story didn't mention the new
call letters.

I called KYNO-Fresno CA today and was told when they changed from Sports
to SS, they were sold. Their new address:
KYNO

Has XEUT started broadcasting at night? SS talk being heard here in
Victoria, mostly dominant on 1630 kHz, but rough copy. Pretty sure I
heard an "X-E" mention at 0431UTC 13 July.

Frederick R. Vobbe - Lima OH - fredv@xxxxxxxxxxx
The National Radio Club convention will be held over labor day
weekend. If you don't know what the National Radio Club is, it's the
world's oldest and largest radio listener's club. Details are at
http://www.nrcdxas.org. I'm looking for help from those of you that work
in radio.
At this years convention I will have (2) mock radio stations, and AM
and FM. These stations are like the ones you work at except the AM is
carrier current (covers the hotel, and that's about it), and the FM is
100 mW. They are programmed with a Wireready automation, running an
oldies format. The AM uses an Innovonics 235 audio processor, and the FM
has an Optimod 8100. The reason for these is so members can change the
settings on the processors and hear what happens at the other end. It's
easier for them to hear it than to try and explain it!
Here is what I'm looking for....
First, I would like to get some welcome messages to drop between the
songs. Something like... "Hi this is Dan Ingram from WABC in New York.
Radio has been a good part of my life, and I'm sure it's been a good
part of yours. I would like to welcome you to the National Radio Club
convention, and remember, when you're in New York, it's 77 WABC!" or
perhaps.... "This is Pete Street from Newstalk 1020. When you are in
Demographic Illinois, tune me in for your news and information each
morning Newstalk 1020 is the voice of the Cubs, and we're your news
source for northern Illinois. Be sure to listen for Newstalk 1020 WAAA,
but in the meantime, have a great National Radio Club convention and
stay tuned to WNRC!"
WNRC is the call sign we gave the station. Feel free to change the
copy in any way you see fit. Pass it around to others at the station.
Send the final results to me in Reel, Cassette, or CD. (Sorry, no
minidisc yet). Or, you can email them to me as MP3 files to:
fred@xxxxxxxx (day job).
I would also be interested in promos for things on your station, no
matter if it's the afternoon guy, your countdown show, or even a promo
for Rush. As long as it mentions your station, it's good to go.
This is a radio junkies convention. All the people eat, sleep, and
drink radio. They are aircheck freaks, promo item collectors, and have
some of the best trivia minds on radio. I hope you can help me out by
contributing.
Oh... one last thing. Doc Holiday did liner for us that says,
"Through the years there has been some great radio... stations with
quality programming and talent. We would like to salute a great
station" At this point a jingle is played from a station. If you want
to send your legal ID or TOH stager, I can use this too.
For those of you that want to hear what we did last year, there are
some real audio files at http://www.nrcdxas.org/ra. Download them or
launch them from the site. You'll get the idea of what we do to
entertain people at the convention.

We just got back from our annual 4th of July trip up to Humboldt County,
CA; I've just finished organizing my notes. Most of what I've heard is
pretty mundane, but there are 3 items of news:
1090 KNCR Fortuna: this station is on, but for the entire 5 days we
were there, the audio was very weak, and there was a buzz, though
the carrier was pretty strong. I guess the station doesn't care
enough to fix it? Still Real Country.
1270 KXBX Lakeport: While driving through the Clear Lake area, I tuned
this in only to get OC, until right on the hour when they gave
their ID and went to ABC news. When that was done, they went
back to OC. Must have had a problem with the satellite. I guess
that's what happens when you have the station unattended on a
Saturday morning. The problem was fixed when we drove through on
the way home.
1480 KGOE Eureka: dropped the relay of KGO, now has own talk format,
"Extreme Talk" with Imus, Dennis Prager, Dr Laura, Tom Leykis,
Phil Hendrie, etc.

I was sitting on 880 khz around 9pm (7/5) there was the usual jumble of
signals from krvn, kixi, a mexican lang. stn etc. All of a sudden this
loud religious broadcaster came from nowhere. Was in solid for an hour
so I could get the i.d on it.(that was unusual too!) Stn was kkmc in
salinas california. NRC log shows 10 kw.anyway. After the i.d., they
faded down into the jumble. I've never heard them before or since. Musta
been just some weird sunset conditions I guess

Throughout today and tonight (7/12/00), I've been hearing a set of three
telephone push button pulses repeated ad-nausem on 840. Bearing seems to
be roughly north/south. Only idea that pops to mind would be a new
CalTrans station testing. Is anyone else hearing this or have any info
as to its identity?

The weekend vandalism at WNWI resulted in two of four towers being
dropped. Pix are on the Archive at oldradio.com
The button labelled "The Latest!" will take you directly to the WNWI
pix ... or navigate to the War Stories section, and you'll find several
sets of downed tower pix there.
***Jeff Multer
I noted the following post on the LMR listserve on egroups.com:
"Two of four new towers owned by WNWI-AM, (1080 Khz) in Oak Lawn, IL.
were felled by vandals over the weekend.
The site was under construction as this is a "move in" station from
Valporasio, IN."
***Chris Rigas
WNWI moved from Valparaiso, IN to Oak Lawn, IL on March 26, 1998. The
actual transmitter site is in Riverdale, IL, where they used a 1.9 kW
transmitter. The additional towers were for a CP to change to 3 kW
daytime and 900 Watt nightime with 4 towers. The CP must have been on,
since I have noticed WNWI running at night since March 21, 2000.
