WWLX-590 Lawrenceburg, TN has been off the air since Thursday night
and will probably remain off for a few months. Their tower was toppled
by a F0 tornado. WLLX-FM 97.5 was also knocked off but according to the
Associated Press they're back on with a backup antenna at the studio
site. (I suspect severely reduced power) W287AA-105.3 was also on the
affected tower and is presumably off.
Also off the air are a cell site, a paging site, and many of the
public-safety systems in Lawrence County. Sounds to me like this tower
may have been rather overloaded.... (there were some rather interesting
shots of the inside of the public-safety radios on the WSMV-4 news last
night....)
***Barry Mishkind - barry@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
"This is part of the message from a local CE, as sent to the
BROADCAST mailing list.
"In addition to the broadcast equipment this tower also was home to
numerous local public safety agencies, a wireless cable TV system,
amateur radio repeaters, paging transmitters and a BellSouth Mobility
cell site. Most of the two way repeaters were housed on a platform at
the 460ft level.
As you might imagine, nothing was salvageable. WLLX FM was back on the
air at about 2am on an aux antenna located at their Lawrenceburg
studios. WLLX AM will be off until a new tower can be built."

There might be an easy answer to this question, but I haven't any
idea.
I read that KCIS-630- Edmonds, WA is applying to drop power from U2
5000/2500 to U1 2300/53. I can understand why they might want a U1
statis at night, but why the drop to 2300 watts day. Maybe 53 watts on
630 will cover the Seattle area OK. Any ideas?
***Bill Hale - Fort Worth TX - phantom2@xxxxxxxx
KCIS is a two-site operation. According to the FCC database, the 'new'
day facility of 2300 watts non-directional is at their old nighttime
site, now 3 towers at N47-51-00 W122-09-38, and the 'new' night facility
of 53 watts non-directional is at their old daytime site, which has 1
tower at N47-46-06 W122-21-07. So the 'new' nighttime site is about 15
or so miles west of the 'new' daytime site.
Maybe they can make some $$$ while selling the unneeded land and cut
their electric bill at the same time. (??)

***Bill Hale - Fort Worth TX - phantom2@xxxxxxxx
The long-awaited(?) swap of frequencies between KCLE Cleburne, TX and
KJSA Mineral Wells, TX will occur Monday, July 24.
KCLE will be on 1140 and KJSA will be on 1120.
Although they will be licensed for nighttime operation, KCLE on 1140
will temporarily remain a daytimer with 250 watts until all the
directional bugs can be worked out. So . . . you may catch them at
LSR/LSS, or better still, check 1140 for them testing at night.
The new daytime facility will direct 850 watts (3738 watts ERP) at 320
degrees from Cleburne, and the night CP is for 710 (3138 watts ERP)
watts at 330 degrees. (Both almost heading right at Denver!)

**Dennis Gibson - dcgibson@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
What I presume to be KZPM-1100 Bakersfield, CA is on the air. I say
presume because I did not hear an ID, but the format is SS, as rumored,
and there are no other CP's on 1100 in California. KZPM runs 4.2 KW ND
days and 800 watts directional at night. They are diplexing off KAFY-
970. I am hearing them from Santa Maria, about an hour north of my home
in Santa Barbara. I'm not sure when they signed on, but I was up here a
week ago today and they were not on then. I will probably not be able to
hear them from home due to splatter from XEPRS-1090, which is very
strong.

>From the latest Soft DXM:
"CA Costa Mesa KKGO-540 was classical//XEBACH, now jazz//KJAZ (KKGO is
expected to go dark shortly (???-I thought they have been off the air
for a long time. Can anyone in L.A. area confirm they are indeed on in
Costa Mesa? I'd think they'd interfere with Tijuana's coverage area! -ye
ed.)"
I was under the same impression as Bob (Wien, ye ed, that is) that
they'd been off for at least a couple of years. About 3 years ago or so
in many parts of the LA area, there was a *huge* overlap with 540
Tijuana.
Unfortunately, neither of our LA area experts (Mike Sanburn and Gary
Larson) are online as far as I know. In the latest Soft DXM, Gary says
"As I've been told, 540 KKGO Costa Mesa to go dark, probably July (?)".
Maybe someone who corresponds with either of them via snail mail or
twisted pair could ask them? I know this topic has come up from time to
time on the news group, but I don't think it was ever settled; I don't
know of any LA area DXers active on the news group.

WNYC's New Website & (via Public Interactive) Music Channels
WNYC (AM & FM) public radio in NYC has unveiled a new website
http://www.wnyc.org/
I haven't spent much time there yet, but my initial reaction is that,
like their old one, it's still not laid out so a user can use it
'intuitively.'
Brand new at WNYC's new site: NYC's new Public Broadcasting.net. Music
Channels http://publicbroadcast.net/wnyc/ppr/channels/ which offers
jazz, blues, folk, classical, and world "music channels programmed by
some of the best producers, programs and stations in public radio."
There's an e-commerce side to this, of course: You'll never be
permitted to forget that the channel's have a store, just a click away.
A little sleuthing reveals that WNYC (and other stations) picks this
material up from Public Interactive (Marketplace et all), branding it as
its own. [You may recall this Feb. article from Current announcing
Public Interactive's start up--it describes how it works.]
http://publicinteractive.com/news/000221-streams.html
(P.I.'s Company Profile is also informative:)
http://publicinteractive.com/company/index.html
The very use of the term, 'channels' suggests that it's also related
to their satellite radio rollout!
Public Interactive offers other pages (Public Newsroom, Public Arts,
Political Conversation, etc.) stations can 'brand' as if it were their
own, and WNYC has done this.
It appears that a these pages (even a particular music channel) are
produced by a station strong in that area (eg WBUR does the Public
Newsroom page?). You can read about this at:
http://publicinteractive.com/
P.S.: Public Interactive has a link to USAir's Inflight mag featuring
an article on great radio stations across the country:
http://www.attachemag.com/stories/features/story1/story1.htm
WNYC's text about the Music Channels
http://publicbroadcasting.net/wnyc/ "Browse, learn about, and listen to
our music channels programmed by some of the best producers, programs

"Monday (7/3) will be the debut of WHPW, 1690AM serving Staten
Island's east and south shores with light classical and instrumental
music, plus some community and religious programming. Their broadcast
schedule is Monday-Friday 8:00AM to 5:00PM and Sunday, 8:00AM-3:00PM."
Also from the web, but I can't remember where comes the following:

The new toy here is a Wellbrook ala 1530 loop made in England by
Wellbrook Communications. It is a one meter aluminum loop. It is shipped
completely assembled & is guaranteed to get the neighbor's attention
when the mail man brings it to your door. It covers 150 khz to 30 Mhz.
It has a figure 8 lobe pattern & is directional up to 3 mhz!!!!!!!!
Anyone interested in this guy can get all the info they want off the
inter-net. Just bring up "wellbrook communiations". They have all the
specs on it as well as a bunch of user reviews that were published in
english am & sw publications. It's not cheap! Normal price is 240.00
delivered to your door, but-------- I ordered during the summer (their
off season) & the owner (Andy Ikin) quoted me 200.00!!!! Tis is a
cottage indusry type business. If you want to e-mail Andy direct, he is
a "sales@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" I have the antenna mounted about 8 feet above
the eaves here. You don't have to mount it that high. Matter of fact;
they recommend you put it on the ground!!! The reason I put mine up so
high is because my house has steel siding & it's kind of like living in
a faraday shield!!! I have it on a tv rotator & that does a dandy job.
The antenna probably only weighs 2 or 3 pounds, so it doesn't take a
real heavy rotator to turn it. The really beautiful thing about this gut
is it can be remoted up to 100 meters max from your rcvr!!!!! It
works!!!! I live in Spokane, Wash. When I got everything hooked up it
was around noon here. Conditions have been lousy what with the solar
flares & proton ejections etc. So I was not expecting much... went up &
listened to short wave---not too bad there. Tuned around am band. On 840
khz I heard KMAX in Colfax. Rotated loop 90 degrees & heard KKNX Eugene
Oregon. Not too bad for noon I thought. Like I said condx here have been
lousy; also lots of power line noise which is why I bought this guy. It
rained one day couple weeks ago & the whole world opened up. No rain
since. Monday night was very good here & I was hearing lots of the clear
channel stuff on the loop (krvn-koma-woai-kgyn etc.) just for
comparison; I also have a 25 ft. self supporting whip I have used for
years. It is off a navy ship; all stainless steel. When I was hearing
all this neat stuff on the loop & kept switching back & forth between
the two. An s 10 signal on my Drake R8 with the loop was barely audible
on the whip!!!!!! So... do I like it??? Yes--------Can't wait til fall!!
