Sorry Bill, but I have to believe my ears. When there is a very weak signal 
at dawn or dusk hours (which I find to be the most interesting times) on 
medium wave, using a good preamp helps in many cases. My receiver is not 
broken or of a bad quality (AOR AR7030+). The signal maybe unreadable no 
matter how much volume is turned on, but when a good preamp is switched on 
it may become readable. This happens both with K9AY and long-wires of 400 
metres. If it wouldn't happen, I wouldn't use a preamp. I don't care about 
the theory, I just listen.
But I agree that the first thing is the antenna. It the antenna doesn't 
work well, a preamp doesn't help, either.
