[HCDX] Lutheran Hour

Dr. Hansjoerg Biener - Wittelsbacherstr. 21 - DE-92224 Amberg

Following my request for reception reports to the German Lutheran Hour I
was asked by some to share some more background.
First about my involvement: Being the editor of a hobby magazine on
international religious broadcasting, I was asked by the Lutheran Hour
to help them gathering some information on the reception of their medium
and short wave channels on the Voice of Russia. It seemed to them that
not all of the frequencies they paid for
were indeed on the air. (And it was not about some misunderstanding of
the Moegel-Dellinger-effect, resp. a sudden short wave fade out.)
Then about the radio ministry
Deutsche Lutherische Stunde (German Lutheran Hour)
The German Lutheran Hour first came on the air in the late 1940s as a
ministry of the International Lutheran Hour founded by Walter A. Maier
in the USA. Until the 1990s the Lutherans Laymen's League remained
responsible for much of the funding. But since 1998, the German Lutheran
Hour has had to entirely rely on donations from its German speaking
audience. The ministry is a ministry of faith but does have some links
to the Selbständige Evangelisch-Lutherische Kirche (Independent
Evangelical Lutheran Church), a small partner church of the Missouri
Lutherans although it is not an outcome of their missionary work but has
its own origins in the German church history of the 19th century. The
director and many speakers are pastors of the SELK, and the
congregations are encouraged to donate to the radio ministry. Currently,
the ministry is headed by Pastor Dr. Horst Neumann (Postfach 1162,
D-27363 Sottrum, 04264-T 2436, F 2437).
As you may know the European broadcasting scene has both public and
private broadcasting stations. So, members of the SELK do have the
chance to speak on the air, but because the SELK is a very small church
in Germany they also chose to maintain their own radio ministry.
Although religious broadcasting is generally included by both types of
stations in Germany, it is not possible for some group or another to buy
airtime. The main outlet for paid religious programming has always been
the German commercial service of Radio Luxembourg. In the 1990´s the
German Lutheran Hour also bought broadcast time in the German services
of Radio Minsk, the Voice of Russia and AR-Intercontinental. Currently,
the German Lutheran Hour
produces two separate 15 minute programmes for broadcast on the german
services of Radio Luxembourg and the Voice of Russia. Two minute spots
are broadcast in the German capital on Christian commercial station
Radio Paradiso. The office also has some connections with local Lutheran
groups broadcasting in local Open Channels.
