The start of Ramadan is based on the first sighting of the *new* moon, not
the old or full moon folks. In recent years, with world-wide communications
being what they are, the date tends to be calculated, rather than based on first
sightings of an ultra-thin crescent from a desert location with clear skies.
Otherwise in November/December Canadian Moslems might never get an official
start.
