[HCDX] ADMIN: Copyrights

Hello All,

I wanted to add my comments to this thread about copyrights.
As you perhaps remember we adapted Gnu Free Documentation License (GFDL)
which guarantees that anything on this list is free and will remain free. So,
this thing is not entirely new to us and question raised here have been
studied.

The full text of our license is available at:

http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/fdl.txt

This means that anything you get from the list can be freely used provided that
the work where it is used doesn't further restrict use of it or anything else
in it. It's OK to charge for media but restricting the information itself
is violation of our copyright license.

Then, what comes to other bulletins... Of course anyone is free to choose their
own policies and try to restrict information if they wish (then they of course
won't be allowed to use HCDX or any other free world DX material as is).

But there are some copyright issues to remember.

a) Fair use is allowd

For example things that falls into this are news reporting, criticism and
research. Ie. you can use news items from other copyright sources as long
as "no more was taken than was necessary".

b) some things are always in public domain

Some things aren't copyrightable. Such things as facts, titles and names aren't
eligble for copyright. Copyright only apply to the form these things are
expressed in. Ie. you can't copy the full text from copyright publication
but it is not a violation of any copyright to report facts in it.

SUMMARY:

So, whatever "copyrighted" bulletin says it's totally legal to extract facts
from it to your own publication (and of course mention the source). But
if you start directly copying material it's more questionable - you have to
create your own expression of the facts in the news reporting.

Hard-Core-DX has always been for free flow of information and we even give
permission directly copy our material (you don't need to rewrite) if you
mention the source and make your publication available in GFDL and have
same terms as we do. Everyone who sends material to the list is responsible
of making sure that there isn't copyrightable material or anything that would
restrict licensing of their contribution under GFDL.

Let's try to kill this thread if there isn't anything new to mention. This
starts to be beaten to death little by little..

73!

Risto
