[HCDX] OSCE Reacts to Radio Pogrom in Moldavia
The High Commissioner of Europe's security body OSCE
has condemned a decision by a court in Moldavia to
withdraw licenses from several Russian-language radio
and television channels. In a letter to Moldavia's
Foreign Ministry on Wednesday, Mr. van der Stul says
the free choice of a language to use is a basic right.
In a parallel address to the Moldavian Parliament, he
urges it to repeal laws that restrict this choice.
Moldavia's official language is Romanian. Most people
there fluently speak Russian as well and want
unrestricted access to Russian-language media.
(From the Voice of Russia newscast, Sept. 27, 2000)
Note: About two weeks ago the nationalistic Moldavian
authorities shut down several major Russian-language
radio and TV stations. All local "foreign language"
electronic media is currently under court challenge
for violation of the "Language Laws." This disturbing
news was initially reported by BBC Russian Service and
R. Liberty.
