The second midwest DX GTG will be held in Springfield MO November 17-
19 at the Executive Inn 2455 N Glenstone. This is city route 65 about 1
mile south of I-44 on the west side of the street.
This is an informal gathering just like our recent one in Oklahoma.
Randy Stewart promises us a tour of his station KSMU FM. Also a DX quiz
, logging contest and plenty of DX talk and good food.Located only 35
miles from Branson MO, some of you may wish to take in a few good shows.
A former Motel 6 , the Executive is a moderate priced nice motel in a
good location.

If either Watt or I gave the impression that WSM-AM is currently
testing IBOC (digital), it is erroneous.
WSM-AM is NOT, I repeat, NOT testing IBOC digital audio.
The statement should read that the station is making PREPARATIONS for
IBOC testing and eventual operations

CKGY-1170 Red Deer AB has applied to the CRTC to move to FM (95.9,
100kW): http://www.crtc.gc.ca/archive/Hearings/2000/N2000-10.htm
Since CKRD-700 moved to FM and shut down the 700 operation, CKGY has
been the only station on AM in Red Deer. The only other AM station in
the area is 1kw CKSQ-1400 Stettler.
CKGY is still in AM Stereo btw. The two stations in Calgary that are
AM stereo are CFFR-660 and CKMX-1060; CHQR-770 is also nominally in
stereo but as they are all talk and news (plus Calgary Stampeders (CFL)
football and two hours of old time radio shows every night at 11:30PM)
only the odd jingle is actually stereo. CFAC-960 was stereo at one point
but dropped it some time ago.
I listen to CFFR and CKMX in stereo all the time on my Sony SRF-A1
walkman (which I find better than my SRF-42). The SRF-A1 cost me all of
$2 Canadian (including a pair of fresh batteries) at a garage sale a few
months ago. This is the same I paid this spring at another garage sale
for my GE Superadio (I) so I have done well at garage sales this year:).

In tuning around today I noticed there isn't a sign of KRTA-610-
Medford, OR. Come to think about it I haven't heard them in the last
several weeks. KFRC has been booming in alone at night to the South. In
checking today, KRFC fair during the day. If KRTA was on I would hear
them. They have always been fair during the day off the EWE antenna.
KRTA must be silent. Any members in the Medford area to check?
Tonight there is an SSer off frequency on 610, so prob KRTA may have
been having transmitter trouble. I haven't caught an ID as yet, but it
probably them.
Also KWOK-1480-Hoquiam WA has returned to the air with reg SPT Talk
this week.

The following is from RGSB website in Britain, this is interesting
since I have always associated meteor scatter (MS)
DX to VHF (FM band) frequencies.
It might be possible to ID other stations not normally heard in the
middle of the night perhaps when they are playing their interval signal.
Normally quiet bands like 16 and 13 meters would be likely targets. Any
suggestions?
Leonids Meteor Shower Occurs This Week
For this year's Leonids meteor shower, which should be observable
around Thursday the 16th, Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th of
November, Trevor Sanderson, G4OEY, and colleagues in the Space Science
Department at the European Space Agency's Technical and Research Centre
have made arrangements with the BBC's service provider, Merlin
Communications, to leave one of their 17640kHz World Service
transmitters switched on from 2000 to 0400UTC on the nights of Monday
the 13th to Sunday the 19th of November.
This transmitter is normally only transmitting from 0700 to 1500UTC.
More details can be found on the ESA's web site, and there's a link
from the RSGB's site at www.rsgb.org Anyone within the skip zone of the
transmitter with suitable equipment - such as a general-coverage
receiver with SSB mode, a good antenna, and a PC with suitable software
- should be able to use the Doppler Method to detect the meteors. G4OEY
described the Peter Martinez, G3PLX, method of using the Doppler effect
to detect reflections of radio signals from the Leonid meteor shower in
the March 2000 issue of RadCom, and the original article by G3PLX can be
found in the May 1998 RadCom. Suitable free software can be downloaded
from the web site of Bev, G3URZ / CT1EGC, and a link is provided from
the RSGB web site.
Unfortunately the freeware does not allow files to be stored, but with
the fully-licensed software the programme can be left running overnight
and the results stored in a file.Tests conducted on a sporadic meteor
stream a week ago gave echoes in the early hours of the morning of
around 50 per hour. Expected Leonids echoes will be much higher during
the shower time and the best results this week are also likely to occur
in the early hours of the morning.

This morning, Chicago SunTimes radio/tv columnist Robert Feder reports
that religious broadcaster Salem Broadcasting has signed to buy the 1160
frequency in Chicago currently owned by Infinity. Currently
simulcasting the signal of WXRT-fm, the station, currently called WXRT-
am, is the former "The Score" which in August moved to 670, WMAQ's old
frequency. Of course, for decades 1160 was WJJD.
The transaction is set to close during the first half of 2001. Salem
currently owns WYLL fm106.7 licensed to northwest suburban Des Plaines.
Coincidentally, the current 1160 transmitter site is also inDes Plaines.
No format was announced by Salem for 1160. WYLL carries a brokertime
religious format dubbed "Chicago's Word" featuring various ministries
and the occasional infomercial.
Announced sales price was $29 million.

840 KSWB OR, Seaside, has dropped the NOS format for a mix of oldies
rock, with no DJ announcements, but they are running spots. A format
change apparently. 11/15 Apparently there was some trouble, as this
afternoon KSWB is back to their ABC NOS. They were Old Rock this morning
though.

ID.
Heard on a Realistic DX-440 and Radio Shack 18-1533 loop:
1260 XEMW MEXICO, SO, San Luis Rio Colorado 11/13 1301 giving legal ID
by male announcer and stating station broadcasts with 1 kW.
1380 KHEY TX. El Paso, 11/10 0806 apparently a change in the ongoing
Clear Channel move of sports stations from lower frequencies to
higher ones. Announced a contest and then ID "KHEY 1380". a
couple of days ago this was KTSM. I would look for KTSM at 690.

1440 XECCC MEXICO, Jalisco, Guadalajara Nov. 11, 1230 classical music
in short snippets for the previous half hour. Good signal into
Arizona. heard before local KSLX s/o.

On Friday 27th October at 06.54 UTC on 1143 kHz AFN had a local
window, and the strongest station had three items related to Spangdahlem
Air Base or Eifel East, which is the same area (near Trier). Does
anybody know if that airbase has some own programming because,
incidentally, one of the transmitters on 1143 is situated at
Spangdahlem. Kaiserslautern is the closest known local studio, but they
should be on 1107 kHz. Anyone in Germany, can you shed some light on
this?

There's a special page there dedicated to the AM DX hobby. I am still
using a portable Panasonic RFB45 with its in-built antenna and the usual
walkman earphones. Right now I am beginning a survey of Italian regional
programmes on Radio Uno's frequencies; the main segment is 0620-0630 UTC
daily and I have already spotted the big guns i.e Milano on 900 khz,
Roma on 1332 khz and Trieste on 981 khz. Contrary to WRTH 2000 I failed
to hear Slovenian on that latter channel. I have also heard Ancona this
morning on 1062 khz but nothing from Sardegna which is supposed to be 15
kw stronger.
I have also noted that Trieste (Friuli Venezia Giulia region) on 819
khz can be heard weekdays with a regional programme at 1745-1800 UTC
that is not mentionned on RAI's website.
My exact location is Noailles 60 km North by Northwest from Paris,15
km South of Beauvais.

PELE DXPEDITION
The location of this DXpedition was Arja Farms Orchid Tree Estate at
Captain Cook Hawaii (Big Island). The dates were 28 October to 4
November 2000. Used the JRC NRD-535D receiver and co-Dxpeditioner Hans
Johnson used his Drake R-8. The antennas I used were 2 mini-Beverages
of 200' at 270 degrees and 300 degrees, while Hans used dipoles for 60
and 49 meters. Besides cassette recorders, headphones, and Hans antenna
switch/tuner, no other accessories were used.
Not having permanent residence there, its difficult to say whether
conditions were poor, good, or just normal. We were getting some
crackling local QRM at various places in the bands but confined mostly
to the Tropcial Bands and below. Some areas worse than others.
Fortunately it eased up in the latter part of the DXpedition. B&B owner
Tim Eastland suggested it might be from the neighboring hog farm,
however I have to point out the electric line ran right behind the guest
house.
An upper level Tropical Low pressure system moved over the islands
starting Wednesday 1 November and continuing into the afternoon of the
next day causing state-wide flooding with road closures, business and
school closures, and electrical disruption from minutes to many hours!!
All the islands were either in a flood watch or warning. There were
reports of over 30 inches of rain in some areas!!!! Locally, the power
kept going off and on throughout the night Wednesday to Thursday, 1-2
November. At one point when the power was off for an extended period, I
decided to go down and DX from inside the rental car. After finally
getting everything connected, I returned to the guest house to retrieve
my notebook only to have the power come back on!! It was quite a storm,
and made the DXpedition memorable in that regard.
I'd like to thank Hans for his occasional help in identifying
stations, and for use of his rig in paralleling frequencies. It was
truly a team effort. (MW only included, lotsa SW stuff too - phil b)
Did a Mediumwave scan between 0130-0200 (3:30-4:00 PM lcl) and hrd all
Hawaiian stns hrd back in 1997 except for KOHO 1170. (1 Nov.)

supermarket, live M anncr, nice island mx. M again, then intro
for pgm segment starting out w/M shouting "?? Samoa!!!", live M
again briefly and remote rpt by different M w/ments of Miller,
Conrad, Lewis. Strong and steady S-9 signal!!! (29 Oct.)
1017 TONGA 3AZ, 1051-1109*, Island mx w/tlk by W anncr. Pres. nx in
Tongan by same W at 1057-1105 w/wx in EG and ending
w/salutations, goodbyes, and mostly uncopiable anmnt also in EG
at 1105. Choral NA 1107-1109*. Fair w/deep fades and QRM from
2KY Australia. (2 Nov.)
1098 MARSHALL ISLANDS V7AD, 0614, Rel. mx, M w/canned EG ID "The only
station broadcasting to all the islands, V7AD, R. Marshalls, 1098
AM, the heartbeat of the Marshall Islands". W anncr in lcl
dialect, mx bridge, live tlk by M. Clear and strong on peaks.
Consistantly good signal in the late evenings. (29 Oct.)

I too noticed an *incredibly* loud het at about 5pm ELT on WWKB, but
DXing on a car radio only, could not pick out audio. Het faded away by
5:30, which was of course the time I neared home and an only slightly
better DX rig.
At times the het was so loud that I thought it was more likely that I
was hearing an off-frequency domestic, which I suppose is still a
possibility....
Soon I'll be (finally) moving into my new home and unpacking my R8,
Kiwa loop, et al. Can't wait.

Transpacific DX
738 POLYNESIA RFO Mahina, Tahiti NOV 12 1030 - Tentative, my first
ever transpacific reception! Man and woman in French faded up
briefly, otherwise a 2 kHz het against 740. XEX Mexico on 730
kHz was strong. WWNZ Florida was dominant over an unID Latin
American signal on 740 kHz until WSBR Florida switched to day
facilities followed by WJIB Massachusetts popping up at 1100 UTC,
essentially wiping out what was a weakening signal with local
sunrise approaching at 1135 UTC. [Conti-NH]

I made a quick visit over to John Bryant's partially constructed house
on Orcas Island the weekend of Nov 5 with Walt Salmaniw, and did a
little DXing while there. It's not that far from here as the crow
flies, but his property looks northwest up Georgia Strait, and he gets
much better Asiatic signals than I do here. Conditions weren't that
great, but there were lots of mostly Asiatic carriers, and a couple of
loggings beyond the usual low band Japanese...
Heard with homebrew receiver and John's 4-loop K9AY antenna.
612 AUSTRALIA, Brisbane, 4QR. 1353 Nov 5. Fair signal, woman talking
in EE, w/ mentions of Australia. Only Aussie showing audio this
morning.
738t TAHITI, Papeete. 0730 Nov 5. Man and woman talking, poor in
splash. Likely this, as it was still daylight in Australia / E.
Asia.
918t CHINA, Shandong. 1405 Nov 5. Man talking followed by CC female
vocals. Poor signal at best, but surprise of the morning
972 S. KOREA, Tangjin, HLCA. 1342 Nov 5. Man holding forth in KK,
poor to fair strength, and one of the stronger signals of the
session. Not much from the 1053 jammer or from HLAZ-1566 at this
time.

line).

560 WGAI NC, Elizabeth City 12Nov00 10:06 eastern, CNN News outro,
ADT Security Systems ad, "WGAI" jingle, and Billboard for "The
WGAI Cash and Carry Radio Auction" Opened by female annr who said
co-host was in hosp with pneumonia. Sponsors were "Alexander's
Mastercare on Hy 17 so." auctioning a refrigerator and Little
Caesars Pizza on Eringhouse St. (Eliz City) Refig opening bid was
$75 and the 2 medium pizzas offered at $6. I'm hungry... signal
fair ***Religous caucasian sermon male - rlg programming on
another station under WGAI. Any ideas? Is Phila PA 560 RLG?
WFAN 660, WABC 770 and WBRW 1130 amongst others from NYC coming in well.
1690 in MD coming in good along with 1650 in Portsmouth, VA.
These loggings were on a Sony CFS-B15 small AM/FM boombox retail
$37.00, 4 years old or so... barefoot. My usual AM (sometimes FM)
aircheck machine while 'in the field'.

590 CUBA (presumed) CMHI, Santa Clara, NOV 13 0356-0404 apparently
running R. Musical Nacional classical music format; very good
atop freq. with symphonic suite of some kind (sounded like
Beethoven or Schubert to me...). No top-of-the-hour ID, though.

readable in LSB due to being off-frequency; just a loud, low

Conditions on Nov.11 were quite unusual. We believe that we caught the
beginning of a solar storm. Conditions favored the southwest and central
Pacific, with very few stations heard from relatively nearby Australia
and New Zealand. Many signals even from the central/southwest Pacific
were either "just hets" or at best "threshold audio." However, there
were outstanding exceptions. Radio Tonga, 1017 kHz., which I've not
even heard in three years, was often the strongest station on the dial,
literally, running S-9+10 dB. The other memorable reception was the
Solomon Islands Broadcasting System. Radio Hapi Isles, Honiara,1035 kHz.
was available for several hours, sometimes at VERY listenable levels.
Radio Hapi Lagun, Gizo, 945 kHz. was there as a het or with threshold
audio for most of the opening. Both are first time loggings for me.

We stayed a night beyond John --- and that night was **exceptional**.
I'll be doing my logs next weekend due to business travel this week, but
MW was outstanding.
The last night started with finding Hawaiin music on 720kHz at
airchair levels then many other Hawaiins showing up. 1035 and 945
(Solomon Is at higher levels then John reported), as well as Majuro,
Tonga, Tahiti, etc at armchair levels. Strong hets on 621, 1225, 1279
and other Pacific freqs that never materialized(all before NZ / Aust
went dark; no Japanese evident even on usual NW wire).
Late in the evening I kept after the stations, running across a
strange one on 684 that I characterized as an aboriginal
language...later recheck and I recognized Pidgin music that I had been
hearing on PNG. This turned out to be R Madang when I tuned in the weak
3260kHz shortwave paralleling. I woke Guy Atkins up to hear parallels
on two receivers - one MW and one SW. Funny, but I had been kidding John
Bryant about hearing PNG earlier in the weekend...
Conditions on both of these evenings were characterized by A=20 to 25,
K=1,2,3 and a polar absorption event in progress that wiped out the
Japanese completely (Just after the PNG logging, they came back on and a
low power Japanese station occupied 684.....Guy was hoping for an Indian
station on this graveyard channel).
Sandwiched in between these 2 outstanding evenings was an ordinary
reception night with A running 10 with K at 3 or 4.
Most interesting was that PNG/Indo SW frequencies were best on the
middle evening with poor reception on the two other evenings --- just
the opposite of the MW experience! And the same was true for Hapi Isles
-- when SW was good, MW was poor and vice versa. Vanuatu on MW had hets
that never materialized :-( It always had strong SW.
All 3 double beverages were used for MW loggings. Bunch'o receivers
tuned in with MD's rolling. Maybe I can get some sound bites up later
this weekend....

On a recent (early October) trip to Estes Park, CO, I noticed KEZZ-
1470 often "ID'd" as K-E-Z during promos and local programming (mostly
during the mornings). Official K-E-Z-Z IDs on the hour and bottom of
the hour frequently. Is this a trend back to "olden times" or simply
short-hand or shortcut on the part of station personnel trying to make
the ID easier to remember for the listening public??

announced today that it will acquire station WXRT-AM (1160) in the

transaction in the first half of 2001.
Salem Communications also owns and operates WYLL-FM (106.7) in

Robert Trout, CBS radio pioneer, dies at 91
NEW YORK (AP) _ Robert Trout, a radio news pioneer whose stamina and
skill at ad-libbing informed listeners for seven decades for CBS and
NPR, died Tuesday. He was 91.
Trout died of congestive heart failure at Lenox Hill Hospital, said
John McDonough, a producer for the National Public Radio program "All
Things Considered." "He was the last remaining link to the beginning of
broadcast journalism," said McDonough, who last worked with Trout three
weeks ago on the NPR program.
Trout began his career in 1931 as a news announcer for independent
radio station WJSV in Virginia. The next year CBS bought WJSV and
retained Trout. Among the events he covered were John Philip Sousa"s
last public performance, campaign speeches by Franklin D. Roosevelt, and
the repeal of Prohibition.
During Roosevelt"s presidency, Trout was the broadcaster who first
used the term "fireside chat" to describe the radio addresses Roosevelt
gave to the nation.
On March 13, 1938, Trout went on the air to introduce CBS" half-hour
"World News Roundup," two days after the German Army marched into
Austria. The program kept the country posted throughout World War II and
for decades afterward. Trout spent part of the war years in London,
working with Edward R. Murrow and presenting a program called "Trans-
Atlantic Call," which featured talks with ordinary people. Back in the
United States, he was the announcer who told CBS listeners about the D-
Day invasion in June 1944, at one point staying on the air for seven
hours and 18 minutes straight, according to the reference Current
Biography.
Roosevelt enjoyed testing Trout"s ability to ad-lib, and Trout was
once forced to talk for nearly an hour while waiting for FDR to get off
a vacation cruise ship, according to Current Biography.
Trout continued to work in radio and television, mostly for CBS, with
brief stints at NBC and ABC, covering events as varied as Douglas
MacArthur"s return to Washington in 1949, Alan Shepard"s space flight in
1961, political conventions and the running of the bulls in Pamplona.
He won the Peabody Award for "distinguished and meritorious public
service" in 1980. He retired from full-time reporting in 1996 but
continued to work as a commentator for "All Things Considered." His
wife, Catherine, whom he married in 1938, died in 1994. They had no
children.

Great Depression and World War II.
Since then Trout has appeared on radio and television, mostly for CBS,
with brief stints at NBC and ABC, covering events as varied as Douglas
MacArthur's return to Washington in 1949, Alan Shepherd's space flight
in 1961, political conventions, Easter parades, and the running of the
bulls in Pamplona. In 1949 he began a television series. "Who Said
That?', which became TV's first panel show.
In 1980 Trout won the Peabody Award for "distinguished and meritorious

Someone posted this URL to the Association of Music Personnel in
Public Radio list... it's probably just as off-topic here, but it's
fascinating stuff: today's NY Times reports that nearly 140 complete
scripts from Max Liebman's classic live TV show "Your Show of Shows"
(Caesar, Coca, Reiner et al.) have been found in a sealed-up closet in
New York... makes great reading if you're a radio-and-TV-history buff
like I am.

Re: the Glenn Hauser excerpts on page 18, the actual line-up (so far
anyway) of the 3 Denver stations mentioned is as follows:
1220 - KLVZ - olides - "Fabulous K-Love"
1280 - KVOD - classical - "Fine Arts Radio"
1340 - KKYD - Catholic Radio
An interesting side note is that here at 16 miles north of KKYD/1340
(1 kw U1) and 14 miles west of KLTT/670 (50 kw U4), the second harmonic
of KLTT is so strong on 1340 that I can only here KKYD by nulling the
signal from KLTT with a loop. (670 x 2 = 1340)

I read with interest Jerry Starr's FCC APPLICATION column in the current
DXN (you know, the hard copy, the thing with the staples in it). Of
note:
740 WA Redmond 50kw: for many years a 5kw outlet in Buckley, WA
supposedly owned by Family Radio was carried on the books. 2 1/2
years ago I called Family and they didn't know anything about it.
I haven't pursued this 50kw application to see who filed it.
840 CA Modesto 1kw: certainly novel, what with 50kw KTRB on 860
1030 WA Tumwater 10kw: with 10kw KMAS in Shelton already on the air,
this has to be an old rejected application
1160 WA Lacey 5kw: I'm pretty sure this has been carried on Kodis as a
CP.
1560 WA Burbank 50kw: I immediately thought this was a typo for
1500/CA - and it still may be. My atlas does not have a Burbank,
WA in it. With KYIZ-1560, KVAN-1550, KCCF-1550 and the perhaps
un-dead 1550 license in the Spokane area, this burg (if it indeed
exists) would have to be in south central WA.
