It seems that I'll be doing a live show on WGSR-1570 this coming
Friday, November 24th from 5 to 7PM Eastern Time. The current manager is
open to me testing the transmitter after hours, which is naturally after
Midnight. I have yet to secure permission to actually do the test as of
this moment. I likely will hear from the GM on Wednesday. My first
priority will to try to test Wednesday at Midnight for two hours. If not
then I'll ask for Friday night at the same time. I have to man the ship
for thanksgiving, and then the next day once I get off of duty head for
the station.
Regular programming will be pre empted with a 70s Pop show. I'm open
for names for the show/taking suggestions. The NRC/IRCA Retro Show?
Insomniac theatre? 70s Serendipity? It'll be on 1570khz, Mexican Clear
Channel.
I'll keep you posted. Stay tuned.

While working on my TV column, I noticed KALT-1610 has applied for an
operating license. This would seem to imply they've been operating, or
at least testing. Buried in the TISs?

**Bill Hale - phantom2@xxxxxxxx (11/21)

I contacted Mr Walter Lancaster of KALT today. He was more than happy
to talk about the new station.
They were on the air for testing purposes over last weekend (11/11 and
11/19) but had a choke filter go bad and said it was being replaced
while we were talking. They expect to go full time in the next week or
so.
The 1610 programming will be 'positive talk' with Dr. Laura and Dennis
Prager, plus some from SRN. They will have sports talk from Fox Radio
in the evenings.
Reception reports are welcome at the address in the current AM Log.
'Attention' them to Mr. Lancaster.

Thanks to a tip from Andy Rugg in Cornwall, Ontario, I am hearing a
new AM station testing right now, Friday Nov. 17 at 1800 UTC, with a
tape loop on 1220 kHz., from Cornwall, Ontario. It is CJUL- The Jewel,
with 1 kilowatt, day and night, different patterns.
They are scheduled to begin regular broadcasting on Friday, November
24, 2000. It is a nostalgia format. The tape loop consists of samplings
of songs by Pat Boone, Elvis, Patty Page, Johnny Mathis, etc. There is
also an announcement with call letters, ownership info, and a telephone
number (613-932-5180) to report reception problems or interference.

There will be an extraordinary transmission for DXers from the
radiomuseum transmitter in Göteborg on 1584 kHz (150W) in the night from
25 to 26 November. The programme will start at 2300 UTC and will last
for about 5 hours. Email for reception reports: <radiomuseet@xxxxxxxxxx>

****Julius Hermans - hermans.j@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Thanks to a tip from Tim Bucknall on the MWC Newsgroup I am hearing
BBC Radio Gloucester right now(nov. 21st 0830 UTC) on the rather odd
frequency of 1493.5. This is really amazing! This must be some sort of
transmitterspur or whatever! Normally BBC Gloucester only broadcasts on
1413!
There is a strong heterodyne when tuning to 1494 and after directing
my antenna (trying to nul France Bleue and an other programme in French
on 1494) I have managed to hear BBC Radio Gloucester on this really
strange frequency! Px was in // to its nominal 1413 and there was an
item on traveling with train(commuters). At 08.30:52 I got a full
Gloucester-ID on 1493.5. The signal strength on 1493 here in the eastern
part of the Netherlands equals 1413 and because of the fact that there
is less QRM from the west on 1493 the overall reception quality is
better! So, this could be an opportunity for us European DX' ers(On 1413
Premier radio from London causes interference). It really is amazing and
interesting that the station is heard with equal strength on this freq
of 1493,5. So this might be a chance for you all out there hunting the
MW-bands!

***Mark Hattam - mark.hattam@xxxxxxxxx

BBC R Gloucestershire is currently radiating a strong spurious
emission on 1493.5 kHz.
This is propagating very well, and has already been logged in Denmark,
Holland and at Sheigra. Engineers at the station know about the problem
and are working to rectify it.
The 1493.5 kHz emission is proving easier to hear than their allocated
channel of 1413 kHz for many people outside the local coverage area.

***Karel Honzik - CZECH REPUBLIC - karel.honzik@xxxxxx (11/17)

Logs from central Europe (Czech Republic)
Yesterday I spent few hours at my favourite place by the sand mine,
some 10 km from Pilsen, out of all noise.

1476 Azerbaijan Radio (tent), with koran at 1520 and Turkish-like
       language. Fair-good.
1503 UNID - Iran? But the language was not Farsi (Persian), I think.
       Radioplay-like program at 1525. Fair-good.
1521 China Radio Int. in Russian - local strength. Close down at 1457.
1521 CBS Taiwan - under CRI. Strong at 1410, then a chinese song heard
after RCI s/off at 1457 UTC.
1566 HLAZ Cheju, South Korea. No signal when they had japanese program
until 1345 UTC (opposite antenna beam). Heard before 1400 in
Chinese, fair to good at 1420.
1566 AIR at 1515, but QRM from other stations is bigger and bigger -
Sunset here is at 1517 UTC

Unfortunately no more time for a detailed look at other frequencies...

Receiver: GRUNDIG Satellit 700
Antenna: 50 metres of wire laid on sandy ground. This short wire was
very direction-sensitive. Moving antenna by 15-20 degrees already showed
a difference in signal strength. This one was a very quiet antenna
compared to another one on trees, 4 meters above ground.

John Bryant - bjohn@xxxxxxxxxxxx

NOTE: I inadvertently sent an early version of this message to
everyone BEFORE I'd integrated the Nov. 12 comments in to the report.
For the convenience of column editors, I'll asterisk the Nov. 12
entries. Sorry.
NOVEMBER 11: Conditions on Nov.11 were quite unusual. We believe that
we caught the beginning of a solar storm. Conditions favored the
southwest and central Pacific, with very few stations heard from
relatively nearby Australia and New Zealand. Many signals even from the
central/southwest Pacific were either "just hets" or at best "threshold
audio." However, there were outstanding exceptions. Radio Tonga, 1017
kHz., which I've not even heard in three years, was often the strongest
station on the dial, literally, running S-9+10 dB. The other memorable
reception was the Solomon Islands Broadcasting System. Radio Hapi Isles,
Honiara,1035 kHz. was available for several hours, sometimes at VERY
listenable levels. Radio Hapi Lagun, Gizo, 945 kHz. was there as a het
or with threshold audio for most of the opening. Both are first time
loggings for me.
NOVEMBER 12: Conditions on Nov. 12 were MUCH poorer on medium wave
than the previous night. Prior to 1300, the Japanese powerhouses were
in, though at much reduced levels. After 1300, the propagation switched
rather abruptly to eastern Australia, with a scattering of good signals.
NOVEMVER 13: I left Grayland during the day of the 12th, to begin a
rather extended tour through the southwestern USA before arriving at my
daughter's home in Ft. Worth Texas in late November. However, my DXing
partners Don Nelson and Guy Atkins stayed on for one more night. They
enjoyed a stupendous opening to the Southwest Pacific, including
multiple loggings of Papua New Guinea on medium wave... a long-sought,
almost mythical target for us all. Rather than being profoundly jealous,
I'm concentrating on being glad that I had to leave, so that I'll still
have than near-Holy Grail to shoot for.... its a great approach, but it
ain't working so far!

Still nothing firm logged, but the morning of Nov 18, there was fair
to poor audio on 1521 kHz at 1515UTC, woman talking in possible CC in
1520 splash. Have heard Taiwan here years ago, but this was not //6180
which used to be my easy parallel. By the time I started checking other
possible parallels, it had faded down.
Just a big carrier Nov 19, with lots of other carriers above 1280
kHz. 594 was delivering audio at 1515UTC, but pretty much the only low
band signal.
1566 had some audio at the same time, but was hardly even a carrier
on Nov 18, after being quite strong Nov 17.

WOKV-690 noticed with Jaguars game LONG after sunset on 11/19.
Obviously 50K non-DA, judging by signal here in Wash DC.
Maybe carrying the home team's football game means you don't have to
operate within licensed parameters.....

Last weekend I was listening to MW stations during a local pedition in
Manamansalo island, Lake Oulujarvi, Finland. We were able to hear PBC MW
stations on 927, 1035 and 1341 kHz in the evening. At the night I heard
American stations like 1680 WTTM Princeton, NJ and several Latin
American stations.
I have a question for allatin American specialists: What is the name
of the station announcing "La Voz de la Liberacion" in Spanish on 1300
kHz. It was heard in the morning around 0400-0500 UTC here in Northern
Finland. Please contact me, if you know more about the station (address,
origin etc.).
Thank you. Muchas gracias por su informacion! At that night the radio
conditions were well for Venezuela and Colombia in the MW band.

Unfortunately, ``La Voz de la Liberacion`` is probably the name of a
(religious) program rather than a station. Maybe someone can refer us to
an affiliate list which will help.

Further to this thread (various hcdx entries in Apr 2000), I can now
safely say that the jingle on Stig Hartvig Nielsen´s UID1 recording
says, "Radio Puerto Rico, solo la verdad", not "Radio Puerto Rico, solo
radio".
On the R Puerto Rico web site I was hearing a host of ID´s today. Here
are a few examples:

"Llevándote la noticia en el momento que ocurre, esta es Radio Puerto
Rico, [reverb and partly superimposed]: Radio Puerto Rico,
WIAC San Juan 7-40 AM
WEKO Cabo Rojo, Mayagüez 9-30 AM
WISA Isabela 13-90 AM
WALO Humacao 12-40 AM
WIBS Guayama 15-40 AM
WMSW Hatillo Arecibo 11-20 AM
WPAB Ponce 5-50 AM,
Radio Puerto Rico".

Another canned ID says, "Llevándote información las 24 horas, esta es
Radio Puerto Rico. (jingle) Radio Noticias".

"Esto es Línea de fuego, por Cadena Radio Puerto Rico".

In live annc´ts, the 1120 station is mentioned as "Radio Once, de
Arecibo, en el 11-20 en el norte del país". This station is not
mentioned as an affiliate on the R Puerto Rico web site
http://www.radiopr740.com

In live annc´ts WISA is pronounced as "Güisa", and WALO as "Gualo",
while WEKO is "Doble ú-e-ca-o".

The "WIAC, solo la verdad" jingle (or: "Radio Puerto Rico, solo la
verdad") is heard every now and then.

Linking to http://www.sistema102.com I learn that WTIL, R Util,
Mayagüez, 1300, belongs to the network, which makes sense as it was also
mentioned on SHN´s recording. In today´s ID annc´ts WTIL was not
mentioned. I guess there is no need to have two Mayagüez outlets to hook
up with San Juan at the same time.
