Sunday, January 7, 2001 - KNUS-710/KRKS-990/KBJD-1650, Denver, CO will
conduct a DX test from 2:00-3:00 am EST. Programming will include Morse
code, unusual music, and other readily identifiable programming. The
programming will be simulcast on all 3 stations. The stations will
probably run day power / non-DA the first half hour and standard night
power / patterns the second half hour.
The stations would also like live feedback from listeners by telephone

Saturday, January 20, 2001 - WAGL-1560, Lancaster, SC will conduct a DX
test from 1:00-2:00 am EST. The test will be conducted as follows: At
1:00 am EST, WAGL will turn their carrier on - static will be heard. At
1:05am EST, WAGL will begin carrier modulation with voice IDs,
greetings, and music. The test will continue until 2:00am EST with
music, voice statements, and possible Morse code IDs. WAGL will conduct
the test using their full 50 kW into their 4 tower array directional
antenna system.

This holiday season Radio Center from Moscow (1485 kHz, 40 kW) once
again will be carrying two special broadcasts targeted at DX-listeners
worldwide. First broadcast will start on Dec. 24 at 21:30 UT and last
until 4:00 in the morning on Dec. 25. The second broadcast will be on
the air on Dec. 31 from 21:30 until 4:00, Jan. 1. All dates and times
are UTC!
Both transmissions will be conducted mainly in Russian with frequent
English announcements and some English or bilingual (English/Russian)
features. The first broadcast will have lots of Christmas music. The
second broadcast shall feature an extended version of a DX-program
"Moscow Calling." The listeners will hear some of the interviews
conducted by R. Center's program director Andrei Nekrasov during his
visits to such North American stations as WJCR, KNLS, VoA, FEBC, WYFR,
RCI, etc. (Many interviews were conducted in English with Russian
interpretation.)
During these special broadcasts R. Center will especially welcome
phone calls from overseas Dxers wishing to report the quality of
reception in their area and to congratulate their Russian colleagues
live on the air. Phone # is 7-095-247-2351. An English/Russian
interpreter will be present during both broadcasts. Andrei Nekrasov
promises not to put the overseas callers on hold and, in case of a pre-
recorded feature, to interrupt it for your greetings.

ID just light music. Keep informed.
This station just ID'd as CHWO on 740. This is not a new call but
moved from 1450? May be mistaken - not first time - but old call taking
over 740 in Ontario but gave a Buffalo phone # 716 544-0740.

This is the former CHWO on 1250 kHz. in Oakville, Ontario. They will
be here on 740 kHz, with the station on 1250 eventually turning to a
religious format with new call letters. CHWO on 740 will be using the
old CBL transmitter site, with 50 KW. In Hornby.

News from Cincinnati that one of the country's more memorable stations
will be dropping jazz and adopting a religious (Roman Catholic) format
on January 1.
WNOP-AM-740 has been the voice of jazz in the city for almost 50
years. A tiny daytime-only (for most of its history) located across the
Ohio River in Newport, Kentucky, WNOP had a most interesting mix---jazz
and classic comedy bits!---for a long time. It was known to locals as
Radio Free Newport.
It was a quirky station with a small but loyal audience. The
Cincinnati Enqirer reports that there will be a "wake" for the station
next week. It's a sad day for Queen City Radio.

The closest local station to my QTH, KIRL-1460 St. Charles, MO, has
once again silenced it's nighttime array (located three miles SW of my
QTH, in the southwest corner of Hazelwood) due to technical problems. It
signs off at sunset nightly; allowing me to bag an old semi-local; WRGA-
1470 Rome, GA.

1690 KSXX Yes. They're throwing an even stronger signal down into
Davis. I already wish they'd go off.
There's a good sized Russian immigrant population in the area,
especially in West Sacramento and Rancho Cordova.
Despite those wierd top of the hour IDs in Spanish, KLIB 1110 runs all
sorts of languages, including RR. KSXX is relaying KLIB right now.
KJAY 1430 also has Russian programming, and German on Sat. mornings.
While we're at it, KEBR 1210 runs Korean many evenings, and KUBA 1600
has Sikh pgms on Sunday nights. (A lot of Sikhs in Yuba City area.)

KSXX 1690 Roseville, CA heard here evenings with one of the best X-
Band signals. I particularly enjoy the Mariachi Music which I learned
to love during several trips to Mexico many moons ago.
1690 kHz has always been a favorite frequency for me. Way back it was
used by the California Highway Patrol for Interstation and Point
toPoint communications. I used to have a button set for 1690 on the
radio in my '53 Dodge V-8. You could drive around and hear different
CHP stations calling each other and Sacramento for file and license
checks. Great stuff and it led me into law enforcement as a profession
for over ten years. I finally went back into Electronics which had
always been my first love and still is.

I heard KWKH 1130 Shreveport stunting last night around midnight with
streaming multiple promos advising a change to all sports format
beginning at 5 AM CST today, 26th of December, will take a feed from
some Fox service every 20 minutes. LSU football games, etc.

Recently Klaus-Dieter Scholz posted the news, that Radio Ropa 261 is
going to close down at the end of the year. Just now, at 2255 UTC the
announcer confirmed this: "We suggest that you enjoy our programmes for
the next days, as we will close down for good on 31st of December at
midnight".
That means, that Radio France International, R. Finland and Radio
Austria International are losing a relay facility too. A pity, the
station had one of the best programmes of all german commercial
stations. They are starving from lack of advertisers, the main client
(almost the only client) was the owning company "Technisat", a producer
of satellite receiving equipment.
I guess the transmitter will serve as another outlet of Mega Radio...

21 at 0605 UT after news, three IDs within one minute as ``Newsradio
1320, KWHN, Fort Smith`` along with ``Arklahoma Weather``. Geez, they
don`t even know what frequency they are broadcasting on! Had pronounced
6 Hz SAH with some other station (estimated by counting 1-2-3-4-5-6-
over and over and seeing that it stays in synch with my digital watch
seconds steps). Note: Don`t be confused: Arklahoma blends two states,
while ``Arklatex`` blends three. As an Oklahoma-firster, I would prefer
``Oklasas``, pronounced ``Oklasaw``... (Transmitter site is in OK)

1690 KSXX CA, Roseville 12-22 1225 good on car radio with woman in SS
doing a religious program. KSMH and KDIA, both near KSXX, were
much weaker.
+12-22 1518 still good on car radio with man in SS doing a
religious program. Neither KSMH or KDIA were there at all; it
looks like this new expanded band station is getting out quite
well.

Another memorable DXpedition - LEM144 - to Lemmenjoki in the Finnish
Lapland is over. On December 2-10th I and Jim Solatie logged quite a few
interesting stations, especially from Europe, Asia and South America.

Some of the highlights were R Berovo, Macedonia (1485 kHz), R Sud Est,
Slobozia, Romania (1600v kHz) and R Pakistan, Rawalpindi (1260 kHz), all
previously unreported in the DX press as far as we know. We also enjoyed
picking up X-band stations from Australia, Argentina and the U.S. The
log includes several interesting unidentified stations, and we would
warmly welcome your help in trying to solve these.
Finally, from the land of Santa Claus (oops, this may trigger a Nordic
debate...), Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

650 KHNR HAWAII, Honolulu, AU CX tonight with KNHR on top of KSTE at
0458 EST (0958 UTC) with Shriners Hospital in Honolulu spot. ID
at 0459.40 "News 24 hours on AM 6-50, KNHR Honolulu" It's
Midnight 12/24. This one is common u/KSTE, but not often as
strong as tonight. (PM-OR)
980 CKRM CANADA, Regina, Sask. Good with C&W mx and "CKRM" IDs at
1812 EST 12/25. This one has been a lot stronger this season

1150 KSEN MT, Shelby, good on top with cluster of Xmas spots at 1820
EST 12/25, ID as "KSEN 1150". Haven't hrd this in a while.
1240 CJNS CANADA, SK, Meadow Lake, a real surprise while tuning past
1240, local spots, and CJNS ID, then back to CJNB C&W programming

County ads, ID then sports talk program with Mike and Mike. One
of the announcers was Mike Golic who used to be an announcer on
KGME until going national. This signal was huge and overcoming
KGO which usually is bombing in here.
1140 XEMR MEXICO, Monterrey, NL 1350 12/25 with an ID and then a
Mexican ballad.
1290 XEQIN MEXICO, San Quentin, BCN 1405 12/25 at sign on playing the
Mexican national anthem then a choral version with young children
singing it. IDed as "La Voz de las Montanas". Then "XEQIN, Feliz

1390 UNID 1415 12/25 Mexican with 5 letter call. Of course the signal

place to get married in San Antonio and San Marcos, at first I
was half expecting this station to be in Texas. Then ID at 1445.
Slogan "La Ranchera de Cuautemoc." At 1446 KDIS and R. Disney
came on and blew them away with their stereo signal.
1110 XEWR MEXICO, Ciudad Juarez, Coahuila, 12/27 1400 playing lots of
nice music from the period of 1961 -66 and was a real nice format
and mix. The announcer was mostly in Mexican SS but a lot of EE
was in the announcements. Heard a ToH ID with "Equis Ehh Double-
oo Erreay, Classic Eleven-Ten, Ah Emmey Estereo!" and "Classic
Once Diez," slogan. Was in stereo with a very nice signal was a
flukey thing to hear them as this was the first time ever. I
usually hear KFAB or KSPN ex KRLA.

12/21... last night I heard a new RSL testing from the UK. They had a test
tape announcing that programmes would start on 3rd January. Name could
be "Hospital Radio Forth" or something similar. Anybody with further
info and particularly address?
In the meantime I found out that the new rsl on 1350 from the UK
should be Hospital Radio Pulse in Redditch, which is due to open.

1350 remains one of the most interesting frequencies to monitor in my
part of the world. After 2200 UTC there is a good chance of hearing a
British LPAM-station. On Dec 26 th I noted the new Hospital Radio Thorpe
on 1350. I heard their looptape with full ID. Thanks to a tip by Guido
Schotmans and John Williams. As there has been some confusion: Am I
right that this is the LPAM for Alexandra Hospital in Redditch near
Birmingham. What does the Thorpe in the ID stand for??

I happened to click away the message about an UNID Italian station on
1608 kHz, so I don't know who correspond with. But I hope on help from
anybody who happens to know: I heard a station on Dec 24th in the
morning on 1608-1607 kHz, but thought it was a Dutch pirate, so I went
on. Today morning at 0700 I heard it again with Christmas music in soul-
format and it was definitevely not Italian, but most probably a Serbo-
Croat talking station. No pirate, as the program seemed very much like a
regular station. In on of the ID's i think it mentioned "Bosnia" and a
special frequency. Does anybody know? Maybe the identification was like
"Radio ...bec" (Berec, Quebec???).

There is a Icom R71 Audio Upgrade available by KIWA. You will find the
URL via www.radio-portal.org
I received a message regarding the R-71A Audio Upgrade - URL, which
was not so easy to find via radio-portal as it should be.
As the solution might be of interest to others also, I make my answer
public. In the database the link in question was described as: R-71A
Audio Upgrade from Kiwa
So if one did a search for R71 (without "-") instead of R-71, the URL
was not shown. The same happens when one searches for R71D.
I will improve this entry in the database in a few days.
But there is a general rule if a normal search (which is a text search
within the descriptions) does not bring enough URLs or the desired
result:
Click on "Search in broad" and combine two categories for a search. In
this case you would have to choose "Receivers" and "Modifications".
Or you search just for the company name instead of a certain product.
Both would have worked in this case.
There are 3 different methods for searches, which are all described
(please click on "FAQ").
The idea behind it is that sometimes one wants a high number of
results (if you want to get an overview, like "all URLs with reviews of
receivers"), sometimes one single URL will just do the job (Review for
ICF 2001D).
Anyway, I am always interested in getting reactions. This is the way
to improve things.

The Audio Upgrade kit for the ICOM IC-R71a also works for the earlier
IC-R70 model, too. I received the kit of parts recently and will be
installing it in my IC-R70 over the Christmas holiday.
The audio path circuitry is extremely similar in the two radios, and
this fact had prompted me to inquire with Craig Siegenthaler at Kiwa
about the R-71a kit for use in an R-70. He reviewed the schematics and
found that his modifications are indeed suitable for the older receiver
also.
I previously owned a AOR AR7030 with the Kiwa Audio Upgrade and I was
very pleased with the improvement in audio quality (which was already
very good to begin with). Craig learned quite a few tricks with
capacitors and resistors from his prior work of modifying profesional
recording studio equipment!

WORLD RADIO TV HANDBOOK. I am sorry to say that in my opinion as a
professional broadcasting engineer and techical wroter, there are many
problems with the 2001 edition, which is quite disappointing, concerning
the promises made by the WRTH people after the 1999 and 2000 fiascos.
The National Radio entries for many Asian countries are identical to the
dreadfully incorrect data published in 2000, and it is obvious that no
updating at all has been made for many other countries.
The Vietnamese Home Service SW listings are a farce: during 2000,
there has been a lot of very good information made available in the
public domain for Vietnamese SW broadcasting, including the extensive
research I did when I visited the region in June. Other experienced
monitors had also made available very good and up-to-date information,
but WRTH has chosen to ignore all of this, and persist in publishing
wrong, outdated, and misleading details.
The Indonesian list is identical to 2000, and is nothing like the
actual situation which exists!
The Australian MW and FM data is very old and doesn't appear to have
been amended.
The International Section has omitted the Voice of Indonesia schedule
entirely, and the Malaysia entries for Sabah and Sarawak are generally
fictitious. About half of the International Schedules are totally
irrelevant, being old "undated" listings, even though many of these B-00
timetables were available during September! The Papua New Guinea
Listings are a farce.
I will not spend any more time discussing this thing, except to say
that if the WRTH people can't afford to set up meaningful editorial
contracts with experts and arrange to remunerate them properly, then it
should close down. It is becoming the laughing stock of the broadcasting
community, and there has also been a price increase of some 10%.
Frankly, the product is becoming scandalous, even though there is a
stated claim that it is "up-to-date" !!!
It is not as though this product is made available free, where we can
tolerate mistakes and omissions. This is a fully commercial title,
attracting substantial advertising revenue; it is quite expensive, yet
people buy in almost total ignorance of the sub-standard content.
Some months ago, I was invited by WRTH to compile the Australian
listings, but my editorial research fee was considered "too high", where
I had also sought an advance payment of 10%. This was not acceptable to
WRTH so "no payment, no work", as there was no way that I was going to
devote countless hours and money into updating a terrible mess for no
remuneration. And that Australian hotch-potch is carried through into
the 2001 edition.
To WRTH I say: stand back and look at what you are doing: you are
putting out a very poor product, which might LOOK nice and pretty with
coloured pages and maps, but it's CONTENT which counts!

A bit of sad news today in radio history. The old KGW (now KEWS) 620
tower in North Portland were knocked down today to make room for wet
lands. The state is building a prison in the area and it was a trade-off
to give more wildlife room. The old 600 foot towers were put up in the
30s. Recently KEWS co-located with KEX in SE Portland, which is also now
co-owned.

200-foot towers for a class A (KEX-1120? KGW will lose a significant
amount of groundwave coverage, and will experience a large increase in
groundwave/skywave cancellation toward the edge of their night- time
coverage.
But maybe neither are profitable enough to justify the capitalization
necessary to put up 5/8-wavelength towers.

Historic Towers Toppled

Two pieces of Portland's broadcasting history were dropped in
spectacular fashion Tuesday.
The oldest operating broadcast towers in Oregon were dropped one after
the other to make room for 91 acres of wildlife habitat.
"This is great because finally we can start working on this property
to return it to its native wetlands condition," said Port of Portland
spokesman Aaron Ellis.
Beginning in 1937, the 625-foot towers carried the signal for KGW
radio and its affiliates.
The Port of Portland bought the property last year to provide the
habitat.
All the steel from the towers will be recycled. (AP)

days: what could you say about an audio/modulation quality of our signal
on 1386 kHz in comparison with a Voice of Russia signal at 1600-2200
and, for example, 1179 (Sweden), 1314 (Norway) and 1521 kHz (R.

Yaesu has a new high-end communications receiver that features a voice
synthesizer option. The model number is VR-5000. It's brand new, so I
don't know any of the specifics in terms of performance. This is
Yaesu's entry into the wide frequency coverage, DSP, table-top receiver
market. It might be a worthy receiver for DXAS members who have
considered the sometimes complicated push-button control of digital
receivers a road block to graduating to something better than analog
Superadio type portables. The voice synthesizer announces the operating
frequency. Check out the specs and price at www.universal-radio.com or
visit the Yaesu site at www.vxstd.com for more info. Icom, Ten-Tec,
Japan Radio, and AOR have had receivers featuring implementation of DSP
on the market for some time now, but only the AOR AR7030 has been given
exceptionally high marks for DX performance. The "old school" Drake R8B
is still the best for the money in my book, but whenever a new receiver
is introduced it captures my interest. Yaesu is the first that I know
of to provide voice synthesis.

In checking both Universal Radio's and Yaesu's own writeups on this
rig, there's NO mention of selectivity figures (aside from buying the
OPTIONAL DSP module, of course). I also notice that the (AM)
sensitivity figures of 10 microvolts on longwave and 4 microvolts on the
BCB aren't any too impressive as far as I'm concerned. That's the
trouble with these wideband receivers: they place a premium on receiving
as many frequency ranges, in as many modes, as they can cram into one
small box, but they don't tend to do what a DXer needs most: dig weak,
interference-ridden signals out of the mud and make them readable enough
to log! Presumably the digital signal processing would assist with this
goal--the question is how much? How sophisticated IS the processing?
The specs don't really go into a lot of detail. At the price
(surprisingly reasonable, it seems to me) I have to wonder.

is an adjacent channel situation right on the island or, fianlly, to
protect preexisting Dominican NARBA assignments. There are actually a
fair number of DAs considering that the land mass is so small that here
are not that many groundwave protections to be considered.

The too many station syndrome in LAtin America is perhaps worse than
in the US. Closer allocations and nearly no directionals make markets
too full of AMs. As FM has taken over nearly everywhere, there are not
25 or 30 opportunities per market for news and talk programming, and,
being Catholic countries, there is not much opportunity for religious
stations, either. Since there are not as many crippled signals (Mexico
City has over 30 full signals, and not one AM that does not cover the
whole market day and night), some stations will just have to die. I've
noticed that Quito has now nearly 15 stations fewer than at the AM peak,
with many channels now silent and not reactivated. Of course, there are
now 40 FMs, too.

I have finally received some further clarification as a result of my
initial query on this subject. It appears below:
"The practical effect of stratospheric warming is to elevate the lowest
useable frequency (LUF) on HF circuits with control points within areas
affected by the warming.
None of the references I searched cited specific frequencies affected
by stratospheric warming, but inasmuch as the LUF is affected, I would
assume the affect is limited to the lower end of the HF band."
