James Godfrey in Kent, OH, Dave Hochfelder in New Brunswick, NJ, Tim
Noonan in Madison, WI, Steve Francis in Alcoa, TN, Mike Brooker in
Toronto, ON, Jeff Falconer in Clinton, OH, Barry McLarnon in Ottawa, ON,
Rick Kenneally in Wilton, CT (metro NYC), Mike Battaglino in Chatham, NJ
and Kent Plourde in Bristol, CT all report hearing the Friday/Saturday
test. David Twiggs, also in Bristol, CT, and Ron Gitscher in
Jacksonville, FL e-mailed that they heard the test on Saturday
night/Sunday morning. Saul Chernos in Toronto, ON and Eric Bueneman in
Hazelwood, MO both tried for the test on Friday but did not hear it; Saul
says he thinks his non-reception was most likely because he did not have
any antennae to enhance reception - all he heard was CFOS in Owen Sound,
ON.
WFBS-1280, Berwick, PA - tested Saturday, February 17, 2001 from 12:00 -
2:00 am EST:
Bob Klinger in New Cumberland, PA says he tried for this test and at
about 12:05 heard what he thought was a Herb Alpert tune (with "Honey" in
the title) and what he thought was the Beatles - he wondered if anyone
could confirm these. Mike Brooker in Toronto, ON says he heard some code
at about 0043 EST, but wasn't able to pull out any music from under a
nulled CFYZ and WADO. Rick Kenneally in Wilton, CT sent a detailed report
of his reception of this test; he mentions that the Beatles song was on
WFAU in Gardiner, ME. Barry McLarnon in Ottawa, ON reports hearing some
bits of WFBS code and some oldies (he mentions "Honeycomb" by Jimmy
Rodgers) that he wasn't sure were from WFBS. James Godfrey in Kent, OH
was unable to hear this test, as was Dave Hochfelder in New Brunswick,
NJ, Tim Noonan in Madison, WI, and Steve Francis in Alcoa, TN. Blaine
Thompson in Ft. Wayne, IN reports no sign of this test, but Jeff Falconer
in Clinton, OH heard the test, though with poor signals under WADO. Mike
Battaglino in Chatham, NJ reports that his reception was much the same as
Barry's - he heard some oldies, but the signal was weak and way under
WADO.
A cooperative silent period for WTIC-1080 and KRLD-1080 was to have
happened this weekend... but it has been POSTPONED. Details below.
Hopefully, someone will inform me when the coordinated silent periods
will be RESCHEDULED as I found out about this one quite LATE.... phil b

A MW-DX tip I read on The North-East Radio Watch, update.... If
you're looking to hear something different on 1080, be listening late
this Saturday night (March 3) as both WTIC in Hartford CT and another
CBS-owned powerhouse on 1080, KRLD in Dallas TX are planning on sharing
some down time together.
Apparently the engineers of these two stations are coordinating the
off air time for both stations on purpose (a little gift to MW DXers
perhaps?). KRLD is to sign off at 11 PM (EST), while WTIC will remain on
for about half and hour to give DXers Texas way a chance to hear them.
Then, WTIC is to sign off at 11:30 PM. But, be quick, the frequency will
be free of both stations for only about a half-hour. KRLD is to sign
back on at Midnight, so us northern folk might have a chance to log
it...and WTIC is to return to the air at 12:15 AM.
While the plan is for this scheduled maintenance to take place this
weekend (March 3-4), there is a possibility it could be postponed. But
if that happens, word has it another coordinated sign off will be
planned for later on.

Here is a message just received from Erik Disen of KRLD:
"Due to the fact that our common point RF meter has not yet been
returned from the mfr. after recalibration, I am cancelling the off-air
period for KRLD that had been scheduled for March 4, Midnight to 1:30
AM. We'll reschedule in a couple of weeks when we have the unit in
hand. Thanks."
I will get a definite time from him when he reschedules.

Folks, this just wasn't meant to be... at least not this weekend.
Perhaps between now and the rescheduled date they can actually get
together with WTIC about times etc. and eliminate all the confusion...

Readers of your bulletin still are waiting for the call letters of the
Puerto Rican on 1660. In the Feb 15 bulletin there was plenty of info,
but no call letters.

** PUERTO RICO. Station heard with great signals in Sweden, heard
first on February 8 at 2200. Calling itself El Gigante, and says
transmitting from Carolina, San Juan (Gert Nilsson, Sweden, swedx list,
Feb 10, 2001 via hard-core-dx.com via DXLD)
Station heard on February 10 here in Umeå, giving ID as "Estación WVIT
[sic] Canóvanas, Carolina, San Juan, 1660 AM". According to NRC log the
address is P.O Box 2780, Camuy, PR 00627 (Lars Bygdén, Sweden, swedx
list, Feb 10, 2001 hard-core-dx.com via DXLD)
WGIT, with the initial "w" pronounced as "doble u", is the actual call
sign for the new X-bander heard testing on 1660. The station is located
in Canóvanas (with the stress on the "o"), Carolina, San Juan.
Identification was possible thanks to a clip uploaded by Martin Elbe,
Germany, to the RealDX list (Henrik Klemetz, Feb 12, DX

Spoke to station Manager Anton Vanderlely of 1611 kHz 3XX Melbourne,
Australia.
Station is currently operating 24 hours at 400w from the 855 kHz 3CR
transmitter site at Old Sneydes Road, Hoppers Crossing, Victoria. Format
is pops & dance music and is currently operating on a loop tape.
He is keen to receive reception reports from Victoria, interstate &

The station is currently negotiating with Mars Media to use their
studios. Many offers have been made by ethnic groups to buy time on the
station. It is currently on a test licence.
Anton Vanderlely also has licences for 1611 Traralgon & Horsham in
rural Victoria. He does not plan to use these in the near future, he
does however plan to use 1611 in Adelaide, South Australia sometime in
the near future.
Anton was the founder of HITZ-FM in Melbourne & was involved with
CITY-FM as well.

KNRO turns its own dial, moves from 600 to 1670
Next week, pitchers and catchers report to spring training.
Oh, happy day! That should shove the XFL back into the darkest corners
of the sports section, where it belongs. A couple weeks later, San
Francisco Giants and Oakland A's spring training games will be
broadcasted. That means it's time to go shopping for a new transistor
radio. That's because my old model doesn't reach down to 1670, where
Giants affiliate KNRO has relocated from its familiar 600 spot. The
station moved recently to find a less-congested home on AM radio's
expanded band. Some years back, according to Jim Bremer, Regent
Broadcasting's chief engineer, the Federal Communications Commission
opened the expanded band to relieve crowding on the AM dial. KNRO jumped
at the opportunity for an improved signal, which translates into a
bigger audience. Bremer said the old AM-600 location, which has been
simulcasting with 1670, will shut down this week and KNRO-1670 or "ESPN
Radio-1670" as it's called on the air, will be the sole home to the
Giants, 49ers and Lakers broadcasts. But it's only the Giants that
matter as March approaches, so it's time to locate a good $10
transistor. And I might just send KNRO-1670 or Regent Broadcasting the
bill....

The SEATTLE 6.8 earthquake today claimed one radio casualty: Sports
KJR-A (SPORTSRADIO 950)/SEATTLE was knocked off the air at about 11:45a
due to loss of power. PD TIM LIOTTA tells ALL ACCESS that the station
got back on by around 12:30p despite damage to a tower and a water main
break, temporarily using a tower slated for relocation to TACOMA later
in the year. Other ACKERLY stations in the market remained on the air
throughout the day.

KJR apparently sustained some damage at its old site in Seattle and as
of this writing (3/1/01 2:44PM PST) is transmitting from the KHHO site.
My guess is that they are on reduced power because it is not splattering
as badly as it did when they tested it in January. However, it is
louder than KHHO. It is unnullable. However, there currently is no
harmonic, as was the case when they tested it.
If you're within a thousand miles or so, listen for it tonight.
This is not the sort of response to earthquake damage DXers look for!

1660 22 Feb 0020 WGIT, San Juan, Puerto Rico was here the whole night
through until sunrise. Only a few times an English-speaking
station came up and went away as quickly as it came. Very good
reception from Puerto Rico, so I skipped all other DX-ing, just
to listen an feel good. Id also "El Gigante - dieciseis-
sesenta". Both male and female announcer, but so far no
commercials what I know. Surely there is another Spanish-speaking
on this frequency when other cx are at hand. WGIT has mostly
romantic, nostalgic songs, but two nights earlier, as I reported,
there was one there with pure Mexican tones all the time. One
mariachi would be followed by another one, with the fiddles, the
guitarrones and the trumpets plus the base. I think I heard
only one such piece of music from Puerto Rico during the whole
last night. Any suggestions about this supposed Mexican station ?

went out to TWR France (Monaco) and TRT Turkey. The price of an IRC has

QSL a few more of these while the signals are strong.

FEB 25 0050 UTC: The unID interference is still here, strongest when
antenna phasing is tuned in a southerly direction for WRVA reception
with CBI nulled out. It's difficult to receive the noise right on 1140
as it's well under WRVA, but use the passband tuning to go to either
side of 1140 and it's loud and clear. I find it hard to believe that
this is from Nevada, although anything is possible. My guess is Cuba.
It sound very similar to the interference on 820. It's definitely not
local or computer generated as someone suggested. I recorded a sample
for the April DXAS.

heard the "motorboating" sound that several DX'ers in FL described,
although I had to switch to CW mode on the old R-1000 to hear it

I heard the mystery noise on 1142 kc +/- starting 1.5 hours before
local sunset last evening in Plant City, Fl., east of Tampa. It sounds
like classic Castro jamming to me, made to sound like computer noise,
slick! It was on a bearing of 160/340 towards Cubanoville! By the way
it's not on right now at 0100 UTC.

Yup, NOW I hear that noise on 1140. I looked for it last week and
didn't hear it. However, it's there, underneath WRVA and quite strong
when I null WRVA. I couldn't get any sort of fix on direction because
WRVA is very strong here. I did notice that the noise seemed to be
stronger around 1140.3, rather than below 1140, but that could be
because WBBR in nearby New York covers it.
One more thing about the noise on 1140: don't mean to sound paranoid,
but could it be more than coincidental that HAARP is now at full power?
Some strange cross-modulation maybe?

I've been watching a thread on the rec.radio.broadcasting newsgroup
about the 1140 noise. Someone there mentioned that Florida Power & Light
has a license on 1140 kHz. I checked it out and sure enough they have a
license authorizing them on 1140, 1205 and 1380 kHz from 5 different
transmitter sites in Dade, Palm Beach, and St. Lucie counties. One of
these sites is the St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant. The emission
designation is AM modulated SSB and the transmitter power for all of the
transmitters is 125 watts. At first I was thinking this might be for
SCADA remote control as a sub-carrier through the power lines. However
each of the transmitters appears to show a different height for the
antenna which seems a bit odd. And the 3K00J3E emission designation is
for voice, not data. Anyone know what this is about?

Again I'll state that there has been a jammer on about 1142.3 for
decades. It was intended to jam WQBA 1140 in Miami. This jammer was
quite strong in the past but with the Cuban economy in disarray and
their electrical power problems, who knows how often this is on or how
strong it is now.
Twenty years ago it was noted every night from southern RI on my
Beverages and I've also heard it from San Diego although no where near
as strong as from RI, one could still tell it was a jammer.

Lee Freshwater has forwarded your e-mails with regard to the in
interfering signal on 1140khz in the southern California area. I had
contacted Lee after I found him on the internet and took a shot that he
may know about the signal. I am Director of Engineering for Morris
Communication Corporation, who owns 7 stations in Palm Springs,
including KNWQ on 1140khz. We have been troubled by this renegade
signal for about a month now. Interestingly, this signal is RIGHT on
top of us during the times it is on the air. We have had numerous
complaints from listeners who cannot receive us through the
interference.
I have tried to track the signal during the day, but it seems to not
be on the air during the daylight hours, and I attempted to track it on
Monday night, but the Las Vegas transmission was mixed in with it so I
could not get a clean direction. I am curious to know about your
location and the bearing you measured for the signal.
Incidentally, all the 1140's in the area, Sacramento, Las Vegas, Palm
Springs, and Lake Isabella have been affected by the signal. We tried
to orchestrate some downtime on Tuesday night after midnight, but the
signal was gone, where I had heard it cleanly not 30 minutes before!
This transmitter historically has been turned on about 4:30pm, but we
have been unable to determine when it is turned off. I am curious to
know what it is. I find it interesting that both times the FCC has been
notified, the signal disappears.
I would appreciate any further information you are able to provide.

Took the 4-mile hike on Honeymoon Island (off of Dunedin) on Saturday,
February 24. Great out there, with plenty of nesting ospreys (not the
Marine Corps crashing kind), one young eagle, one Great Horned owl, two
black racers and one gopher tortise all viewed right on the trail. Also,
one Cessna 172 repeatedly practicing stalls at about 1500 feet.
In the parking lot just before setting out, noted a couple of X-band
freq things:
1630 WRDW Augusta, GA 9:18 a.m. (1418 GMT) good level w/ ads for
stores in Augusta, coastal MS and New Orleans. Male canned "1630
WRDW" then immediately into dead air. Still silent past noon
recheck. Threshold traces of stations on 1650 and 1690, but
unable to copy decent details. 1610 occupied by the Tarpon
Springs TIS, 1620 quiet, 1640 the usual harmonic of the 820 Largo
Spanish station, and 1680 the Orlando area-faux TIS licensed
station.
1700 "Fontana Plaza Micro Radio [NOT!]," Palm Harbor, FL, still a semi-
mystery. Noted around 9:30 a.m. (1430 GMT) initially on the
island, good signal w/ looping spoofed Clinton voice, promoting
stores in the "Fontana Plaza," inlcuding the Lucky Supermarket,
Baskin Robins (joke about how he [Bill] took Monica there, and
she got a stain on her dress from spilling ice cream), Cruisin'
Auto Parts, Spotty's (?) Restaurant, Save On Drugs, the Fontana
Indoor Swap Meet, and Western Bingo. The Plaza location is
announced as "on Sierra Avenue and Fontana Plaza East." Opening
loop ID includes (over piano): "At 1610 AM you're tuned to
Fontana Plaza Micro Radio... preset your car radio to 1610 AM...
so next time you're in the area, you can hear the joke of the
day, speaking of which..." into lame Clinton joke about building
homes like Carter did upon leaving office, with "stonewalls."
Also, the next time you take a trip to the Plaza (as long as it's
not Linda Tripp), etc. Well, I have never heard of any of these
stores, streets or a Fontana Plaza in this area. And indeed a
quick check of the maps for north Pinellas, and phone book for
north Pinellas and south Pasco Counties show nothing. So, after
leaving the island, I drove around the traffic mess between Alt.
US 19 and US 19. It appears this is coming from, or at least
very near to, the Pelican Car Wash, 31425 US 19 N, Palm Harbor.
In this small strip center (across from Ferman BMW), the signal
peaked (overmodulating). No signs or visible antenna, and the
cashier and assistant manager were clueless and quite unfriendly
about the inquiry. Also in the strip center are a Meineke
Brakes & Muffler, a nail and tanning salon, Quizno's Subs, and an
AT&T Wireless reseller (also installs car alarms, custom audio
etc. in several garage bays). No clearly marked name for the
strip center, but seems to be Pelican Service Center, judging by
the lettering above the Meineke sign on the building. So what
gives? I can only guess that this is one of those micro
advertising transmitters, purchased from someone far away
(suspect out west, based on store and road names), and whoever
turned it on has not bothered to record a new announcement loop
yet. However, someone must have figured out how to tune it up to
1700 kHz, from the apparent former 1610 frequency. And
activating it on 1700 in this area makes sense, being that the
City of Tarpon Springs TIS on 1610 is loud and clear in the area.
Signal still there on US 19 at Gulf To Bay, but pretty much gone
southbound US 19 after that. At home, very weak traces of it
using the Scotka loop, not enough to have copied it from here,
though audible enough to tell it's a looped recording. MORE:

Indoor Swap Meet", found a website titled "California Swapmeets",
and sure enough, under "F", found a "Fontana Indoor Swap Meet" at
9773 Sierra Avenue in Fontana, which would match the street you

Quite a good opening late this evening (Feb 22) around 0500 - 0600
UTC. Just faint carriers at 0700. Too many carriers to mention, lot's
with audio, though nothing identifiable. Some were putting good hets on
domestics. All the following were producing audio: 153, 162, 189, 198,
234, 1008, 1044, 1053, 1107, 1116, 1314, 1422 and 1512. On 1053 I could
hear a man talking in "english" english (I should know right?)
describing what sounded like some sort of game. 1107 and 1116, on both
of these I could hear someone talking but was unable to get the
language. 1512 was putting a big het on KGA, as was 1422 on 1420.

1314 was by far the stronger with a slight amount of audio. This was

I know 1660 WMIB carries the same format as 1620 WHLY, but who carries
it on 1600. Friday night I heard 1600, 1620& 1660 all playing Frank
Sinatra's song "Love and Marriage". Also about a week ago I heard a NOAA
broadcast on 1610 while I was attempting to get KALT. It faded up a
little and I was able to hear weather conditions for some areas in West
Virginia and Western Pennsylvania. In fact I did hear it mention
Pittsburgh. Anybody know where this may be coming from?

Great, Salvo - this one seems to be my UNID of FEB 20, 0320 UTC. I
heard a SS station on 1030 kHz and because the signal was quite strong,
I thought it was WBZ with SS ethnic program - what is nonsence, I think
now...
Anybody in Europe heard Spanish on 1030 kHz lately?
And - to have it written all within one mail - I heard another UNID SS
station:
1370 FEB 20; 0557 UTC - looked like a religious program with "Senor"
repeated several times. Anybody?

1030 It's Radio del Plata. I've logged this also some days ago and I've
then registered a clear ID by a YL. Yesterday here in Sicily there were
only Argentina and Brasile in MW, like some days ago... Your UNID could
be this, surely.
1370 This could be Colombia (Radio Mundial, Santa Fé de Bogota), that
I've catched some months ago. Here, however on 1370 come almost always
Radio Atual AM from Brasil.

On the 17th of Feb at 0115-0135 UTC I heard a strong SS station on 1630
kHz, all the time with a football game. I think one of the teams was
Colombia and the score was 1-1 when I listened. Now to my question: Is
Radio Buen Ayre still on the air? If not - what else??? A Colombian? Do
you know any www-page with South American football results? Please help!
I can also report that I got my 215th country verified this week. I
received a very good confirmation from Radio St Lucia, after a follow up
report to the email given in HCDX. I had a really good report, so good
that the v/s could tell me the name of the program and also the program
announcer's name, after my details. Nice catch!

on until about 2000 PST (0400 UTC). Of late they have been s/off at
about that time. It may have been XEUT he heard. RED92 from Argentina is

I listened on 1650 from 0630 UTC until after 0800 UTC. There was talk
all the time about communication, TV, audio etc. No sign of WHKT, the
regular one here in Europe on 1650, however on the top of the hour at
0700 they popped up with their news. After 0700 Coast to Coast AM. It
seems there's an id for KBJD at 0800 but it was all talk, no music
heard.

Can someone help me with an unidentified US station on 1530 kHz heard
on Feb 21st at 0800 with religious preaching. I caught phrases like:
"for the faith of God" and "the kingdom of Heaven".
Now 1530 usually never produces any transatlantic condx here in
Europe. And when it does its someone in Northern Scandinavia hearing
westcoast stations.
This was not a westcoast station (no condx towards that area at all
from here at present), and I cant remember seeing anyone having heard
much apart from Iceland on this frequency.
However perhaps someone (in North America?) can help me with an idea
as to which station this might have been - from the format and looking
at the transmitter-patterns of the religious stations on 1530.

I quess that it has been WSAI Cincinnati OH which is the most common
NA-station heard on 1530 kHz at that time here. And it have also
religious format.

Let me see if I can help you ID this station. It sounds like WSAI in
Cincinnati, Ohio. In the early morning hours, they are religious
programs till about 0500 EST.
During the day their programing is that of adult standards, great
music such as big band, swing, and Santra, Billie Holiday, etc. They
play this up to 2330 EST when the program changes to "Angel Wings," a
call in talk show with new age none Christian, advice.
What it sounds like you heard was from Brother Stair, who buys time on
the station around 0300 EST. That is some of his standard phrases. He
thinks he is a prophet of God.
If the time you gave is 0800 UTC, and not the time in Denmark, then
that would work out just right for WSAI radio. WSAI is 50,000 watts and
here in south eastern Tennessee they are always 30db over S-9.

1) They have an all news format in the morning and no preaching
programmes
2) They are in Arabic 0745-0800 and is airing their Interval Signal at
0800 a couple of times before switching the 1530 transmitter off
3) Vatican Radio is well heard on my beverage pointing south, and not on
the aerial I used.

Remember that New Jersey is also in Spanish. WWRU carries Radio Unica
most of the time. If you have a local Radio Unica outlet, try sync'ing
it up with 1660 to determine whether it's New Jersey or Puerto Rico.

This morning about 01:45 - 02:00 Eastern (0645-0700 UTC) on 570 kHz I
was hearing what sounded like WWV, or a station very much like it. I
could clearly hearing the very time interval signals, but the verbal
portion was too tough to read in the mix.
At my Derry NH listening post in southern New Hampshire, WMCA New York
City often dominates the channel with (help me out here)
Rochester/Syracuse area 570 often underneath.

Chances are you were hearing Radio Reloj from Cuba, which features
time pips, as well as "RR" code IDs on the minute. It is heard here in
the Chicago area quite often.

I don't have my WRTH right now, but I believe you will find that there
is a Radio Reloj station in Cuba on 570 which has time pips and top-of-
the-minute tones similar to WWV. Radio Reloj is a somewhat tedious all-
news network in Cuba. If you hear any audio other than the time pips,
the station should be easy to ID. The announcers typically say Radio
Reloj at the top of every minute.
I hear R. Reloj on 590 and 960 many nights.

What you heard was Radio Reloj, Cuba. They have a syncopated clock
that sound like WWV running continuously in the background while reading
news. You should also hear an "RR" Morse code ID and minute marker
every minute with a Radio Reloj voice ID and time check. This is one of
the strongest of the Radio Reloj stations, often heard here well over
WMCA New York.

As clear as day on 1310, I heard a TOH ID of "WSFW Seneca Falls, WAUB
Auburn, WCGR Canandaigua, WGVA Geneva - The Finger Lakes new network..."
Problem is, none of those are on 1310.
I assume it is WRSB Canandaigua, but I recorded them two hours earlier
with a parallel ID to WASB-1590 and carrying religious programming. So
they must switch allegiance.

One-on-One sports talk goes to WYPA March 1

WYPA-AM (820), the original frequency occupied by the Score, is
becoming an outlet for sports talk again. Starting March 1, One-on-One
Sports Radio Network will be heard from sunrise to sunset on WYPA, with
a lineup that includes Sun-Times sports columnist Jay Mariotti, sports
writer Mike Mulligan and sports talkers Chet Coppock and Jim Memolo.
The Northbrook-based network most recently has been airing on
northwest suburban WJKL-FM (94.3). The move to WYPA will increase its
coverage in the Chicago area and allow it to compete against all-sports
WSCR-AM (670) and WMVP-AM (1000).
One-on-One's weekday lineup includes Memolo and Scott Wetzel from
sunrise to 9 a.m., Mariotti with Mulligan and Jim Litke from 9 a.m. to 1
p.m., Nestor Aparicio from 1 to 5 p.m., and "Papa" Joe Chevalier from 5
p.m. to sunset.
Weekends include Steve Hyder from sunrise to 8 a.m., Peter Brown from
8 a.m. to noon, Bob Berger and Bruce Murray from noon to 6 p.m., and
Coppock from 6 p.m. to sunset.
Fred Eychaner's Newsweb Corp. took over WYPA last week in a $10.5
million deal with Catholic Radio Network. Chicago-based Newsweb
originally planned to air brokered ethnic and foreign-language

As part of its new alliance with the Sporting News, One-on-One is
expected to change its name to the Sporting News Radio Network in late
March.
* With One-on-One leaving WJKL, owner Rick Jakle confirmed plans
Wednesday to transform the station into a full-time outlet for
contemporary Christian music.
Starting March 1, WJKL will air the time-brokered "K-LOVE" format of
the Educational Media Foundation, based in Sacramento, Calif. Chicago
will become the 36th (and largest) market to carry the 24-hour
noncommercial Christian format.
"K-LOVE" was founded in 1988 as a national radio ministry by Bob
Anthony, a former San Francisco radio personality.
Jakle, who has owned Elgin-based WJKL since 1966, also owns northwest
suburban WRMN-AM (1410), west suburban WBIG-AM (1280) and KSHP-AM in Las
Vegas.
* Elsewhere on the religious radio front, Salem Broadcasting has
delayed its launch of "The Fish," a contemporary Christian music format,
on WYLL-FM (106.7).
With its recent purchase of WYLL-AM (1160) for $29 million from
Infinity Broadcasting, Salem planned to air its Christian talk format
exclusively on the AM side and transform its FM outlet into "The Fish,"
geared to women between the ages of 25 and 54.
Wednesday had been the target date for the kickoff, expected to
feature "40 days and 40 nights" of commercial-free music.
But general manager John Timm said problems with the FM station's
transmitter and antenna in northwest suburban Arlington Heights forced
the company to postpone the launch. No new date has been set.
WYLL will continue to simulcast Salem's Christian talk on AM and FM,
as it has been doing since Feb. 1.
* It's official: Jeff Joniak was named play-by-play announcer
Wednesday for Bears broadcasts on WBBM-AM (780). He replaces Gary Bender
alongside analysts Hub Arkush and Tom Thayer in the Bears radio booth,
starting with the 2001 season.
Joniak also will continue as a weekday sports anchor and host of game
day coverage on "Newsradio 780." "I share the spirit for which Bears
fans are renowned, and it's a responsibility that I do not take
lightly," Joniak said. "Hub and Tom have been instrumental in my
development over the last four years, and I'm thrilled to be able to
continue the partnership."

Roycroft farewell ceremony has been set.

Location is: The cliff in front of Alan's home at 5 Kahoa St. Hilo,
Hawaii.
Joe Hampton, Alan's dedicated care giver for the last several years,
will take the ashes out into Hilo Bay by paddle boat and will scatter
them in full view of the cliff top.

With a young family and demanding job, I don't have nearly enough time
for live DXing. To enjoy more DX, to make my commute to/from work more
interesting, and to ensure that every radio I have is gainfully
employed, I make recordings of target frequencies and listen later.
Note, I'm not big on QSLs except for very special receptions - I use
tapes as my record.
Now taping 45-90 minutes of some random frequency is not always that
interesting thanks to network programming and hour-long "ID-free" shows.
Some years ago, I bought a pair of Micronta timers from Radio Shack that
featured digital programming of 7 on/off pairs each. I chained them
together for 13 on/off pairs. I then programmed them to record two
minutes across the top of every hour through the night. I would then
listen the next day to one set of top-of-the-hour IDs after another.
This turned out to be a tremendously effective way to quickly rebuild my
logs after moving east from Ohio. While this worked, it was a pain -
the timers were of horrible construction, tended to drift in time, and
sported buttons that weren't debounced.
Now that I'm back into DXing, I unpacked the timers and started to set
them up. After the usual nightmare of programming, I put the internet
to work and found a nifty little alternative:
Intermatic DT17 Appliance Timer
It is carried by Home Depot, Bed Bath & Beyond, and is available over
the web for about $25.
The DT17 has 14 on/off pairs, and you can set it to the second (when
you release the program button, the seconds start counting at 1). It
has battery backup and appears to keep good time. I've got one
programmed to record across the top of every hour from dusk to dawn, and
I'm just about to buy another to program for sunrise/sunset recordings
at 15-minute intervals.
Three complaints, none serious: First, it plugs into the wall like a
fat transformer, making it hard to adjust. This was cured with a short
extension cord between the timer and the wall. Second, the buttons and
display are very small, so large hands and bad eyes will struggle a bit.
Third, you can't clear a single on/off program - you can only clear the
entire set of programs. So to eliminate a program time, you have to
change the on/off to match an existing program.
All in all, a fine little tool that has helped me pick up all the
easier x-banders and has added spice to my commute.
I have to mention and thank the author of an article in the first WRTH
I bought back in 1977 or 1978. It was written by a fellow who did a lot
of taping and suggested using a stereo tape recorder to record from two
receivers at once (which I do). I think his name was something like
Gerd Klawitter.
